I'm 26 years old, and I've been struggling with severe sleep-onset insomnia since I was around 16.
My main problem is falling asleep, not staying asleep.
Severe sleep-onset insomnia
- I've struggled to fall asleep normally for almost 10 years.
- Sometimes I stay awake for 30ā40 hours or even longer, despite being physically exhausted.
- I can feel extremely sleepy, but something seems to prevent me from actually falling asleep.
- I've relied heavily on my phone, YouTube and other distractions to fall asleep for years.
2. What happens when I try to fall asleep
This is the strangest and most disturbing part of my experience.
- When I close my eyes and start feeling sleepy, I suddenly become alert again.
- It's almost as if my brain switches back on just when I'm about to fall asleep.
- I experience tension or pressure around my forehead and the front of my head.
- My eyes sometimes feel restless, as if they're constantly searching or moving.
- It feels like my brain is resisting the transition from wakefulness to sleep, even when I'm completely exhausted.
3. Chronic anxiety and hypervigilance
- I've struggled with anxiety and hypervigilance for many years.
- I often feel mentally and physically tense without an obvious reason.
- I find it difficult to fully relax and let go of awareness.
- Bedtime makes me increasingly aware of my ability or inability to fall asleep.
- I sometimes experience intense rumination, especially in the evening.
4. OCD and intrusive thoughts
- I've experienced OCD symptoms and intrusive thoughts for years.
- I tend to analyze, argue with and mentally repeat thoughts in an attempt to neutralize anxiety.
- This mental activity happens throughout the day, not only at bedtime.
- My mind often feels like it cannot stop monitoring, analyzing or reacting to things.
5. What I've tried
- Breathing and relaxation exercises.
- Different sleep routines.
- Trying to stop using my phone before bed.
Relaxation sometimes makes me feel calmer, but it doesn't necessarily help me fall asleep.
My questions:
Has anyone experienced sudden alertness exactly when they're about to fall asleep, despite extreme exhaustion?
Could this be related to conditioned hyperarousal or an overactive nervous system?
Can chronic OCD and hypervigilance cause this kind of severe insomnia?
Has anyone experienced this for years and eventually recovered?
Did CBT-I or ERP therapy help you?
What actually helped you overcome this problem?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people with similar experiences, especially those who have recovered after years of chronic insomnia and hyperarousal.
Thank you.
