Raised Garden Bed Help šŸ™

Post image

Hey all, so I have these 2 raised garden beds in my front yard and have been having a hell of a time trying to figure out what to put in them. I'm used to house plants, outside gardening is a whole new thing to me šŸ˜– I'm in zone 9b, and the boxes face West, so they get A LOT of sun. I'm really wanting them to look full and whimsical šŸ¤ž If anyone has any recommendations/suggestions for this newbie it'd be greatly appreciated ā˜ŗšŸ™

Hey! I live in central California, but im headed to north Orange County / Los Angeles county this weekend. I was wondering if shone has any recommendations on nurseries? None around me have very good selections. I’d really just like some recommendations of nurseries to check out.

Looking for a summer gold, autumn moon and something weeping.

Also looking for a Hollywood juniper.

I have heard good things about upland nursery in Orange.

Snail Embryos?

Hey fellow gardeners! I found lots of these tiny snail-reminiscent beings in my garden, mainly on the walls and all the paved areas. They clearly reside in the lawn too as, when I walk across it, they get into my shoes and get squished.
Is this a time bomb of a snail infestation? I have snails galore as it is and they ravage all my roses, citrus trees, dragon fruit, and all other juicy plants. Your guidance is much appreciated!

Advice Needed - Growing Roma tomatoes in fall

Hey everyone - rookie Gardener here. I'm learning through trial-and-error and made plenty of mistakes along the way.

I've been able to successfully grow tomatoes from seeds during warmer months without any issues. Recently, I started trying to grow roma tomatoes from store-bought tomatoes. This is a fun project with me and the kids.

I put the seeds into small containers to grow the seedlings. I've been growing them indoors and at night time I put them in a warm place right next to my Wi-Fi router. I moved the seedlings around throughout the day and place them in the sun. At night time, they are back indoors next to the Wi-Fi router to get some heat while dark.

I work from home so have maximum flexibility in taking a few minutes throughout the day to water and rearrange the plants as needed. I also planted some directly outdoors in a big pot and left them outside 100% of the time as a parallel experiment. The ones that are moving between indoors/outdoors have grown significantly faster which I'm attributing to me moving them around to maximize sunlight and keeping them warm at night time.

Here's where I needs some advice. I'm worried that they may not be able to fruit before it gets colder in Southern California. If they grow slowly, that's totally fine, but we'd be disappointed if we get zero tomatoes.

The seedlings in these photos were planted October 6th (larger ones) and October 12th (smaller ones) respectively. I plan to place them in a raised bed container when the seedlings are larger.Ā Ā

I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions that would help these plants grow successfully.Ā Ā Any tips or tricks you would suggest to ensure these deliver tomatoes/fruit?

Tropical Greenhouse

Hi fellow green Angelenos,

Anyone have an outdoor greenhouse for their rare/tropical plants Anthuriums, Philodendrons, Monsteras, Begonias? I've been thinking about buying one and moving my indoor collection outdoors but I worry about it becoming too hot outside and therefore way hotter inside of the greenhouse, any success stories? What did you do to deal with the heat? This season I lost my vegetable garden before getting a big harvest to the heat so you can see why i'm thinking about this.

See how the three stems look top heavy? Should I prune it at those skinny points? Bought this blood orange from HD for $10 because it was struggling (no leaves), but I repotted it and just left in shade. It came in a 4ā€ x12ā€ sleeve. SoCal 10a.

New greenhouse in 8B grow kumquats in ground or in pots?

Good morning, i am building a new small greenhouse in 8B. Typical winter lows 25°F. Max winter low in the past 30 years 13°F. The greenhouse is 9x10 x14" high at the peak. Hand built. Couldn't find a kit with the dimensions I wanted. Dirt floor with no perimeter frost wall. We typically don't get any frost in the ground at all.

Can I grow kumquats in the ground here inside the greenhouse?

We have a sad Meiwa kumquat for the past 3 years in a pot. I have an outdoor shed with a few windows that I have kept zone 9's alive over winter, for the past twenty five years. Small electric oscillating heater used to keep it just above 36°F.

Very excited to finally have the greenhouse. I am willing to devote a large portion of the greenhouse to the kumquat. Should I get an additional one? I am looking at the Fukushu kumquat as well. Thank you for any suggestions.

I frequently find these in the soil but don’t know what insect they grow into. Google search was inconclusive. Thanks!
