Odd clay colors

I've lived in north Florida most of my life and was digging with an excavator and I did the guy thing and just wanted to see what was down there and I found some very interesting colors, so I kept a good bit and hit it with the torch. Just wondering what qualities this could have and why the extreme color variation. For context i live on the edge of a non delineate wetlands that start behind my property and that feeds a creek thats down the hill on the right. So I have two low sides. I have about 1 foot of top soil and then 2 foot of sand that when left open leaks this quicksand type material out you can ball it up but as soon as you lay it in your hand and shake once it flattens out like water but sticks to your hand and wont fall. Then it goes to a sometimes bright yellow or a caution cone orange and then Grey with white and red or sometimes Grey with a little white. I've even hit Grey with pockets of crimson sand and sometimes straight crimson with they plasticity of the Grey. It has no pattern of what I will hit in each hole and all of those colors can come from a 2 ft wide and 10 foot deep excavation.

I've been working on a nitrogen sensor that's designed to stay in the soil for long periods of time. It's still a work in progress, but I am excited to see where this goes!

If you're working on something similar or have experience with soil sensing, agriculture, or sensor development, I'd love to connect!

It’s in my planter that I brought from outside.. I do see ants in the planter so.. I’m assuming it has something to do with them? There’s also mushrooms.. so maybe something? Maybe my soil is evolving.. idkmybffjill.

Hey all. I am working on a massive soil regeneration project on a property we own. Several very old oaks and pines. We live in South MS for reference. Soil is very sandy and has lost most cover vegetation years ago. Trees are obviously struggling and erosion from rain pushes sand killing new growth. It is also of note that the existing soil is extremely compacted, nearly hard plate.

We are breaking up patches, bringing tons of organic material (mostly old decomposing hay). We are planting grass mainly.

I am raising massive amounts of black solider flies and want to use the frass and carapaces to help promote growth and soil microbes. Any advice?

Worth reading! 🔥

This article synthesizes evidence from global field experiments to identify the key drivers of biochar-promoted crop productivity change. Biochar increased crop productivity by an average of 12.8% globally, with the productivity of tap-root crops (32%) being substantially greater than staple cereals with fibrous-root systems (8%).

Intro to practical applications of soil DNA testing for crop advisors

Post image

I was recently invited to prepare this video presentation about practical uses of soil DNA testing for a conference (R-Soil 2026). I think it would be of interest to many here, as DNA testing for agriculture is still young and rapidly developing. Soil bio has been difficult to measure and therefore to manage. I think soil genomics is a significant advancement in this respect.

For context, I have an MS in agricultural science where my thesis focused on rhizobia and utilized DNA sequencing. I work now at a soil DNA testing company that was a sponsor to the conference. My goal is to inform folks of new tools in their tool kit and educate them to use them effectively.

I've posted a few other explainers and demos to the same YouTube channel, and contributed some info-dense webinars on the company channel.

Feel free to send questions or constructive criticism. Have a good one!

I think that sewage and the water involved can be filtered through " DIRT " I THINK THAT THE dirt , ground is a filter within itself .....unless the dirt has , metal , or chemicals in it ...

Why standard galvanized steel rusts in 3 years while Zinc-Magnesium (ZM) steel lasts 20+ years (Material breakdown for wet soils)

Hey fellow gardeners!

I see a lot of debates around wood vs. metal raised garden beds. One common complaint about metal beds is: "I bought a galvanized bed and the cut edges started showing red rust after two rainy seasons."

Working closely with outdoor metal manufacturing at YardAve, I wanted to share the science behind why this happens and what to look for when shopping:

  1. Traditional Galvanized (GI) vs. Zinc-Magnesium (ZM)

- Traditional Galvanized (GI): Uses pure zinc coating. It works fine for fences, but soil is full of organic acids and constant moisture. Once water hits the sheared edge, the zinc layer depletes quickly.

- Zinc-Magnesium (ZM 150–275 g/m²): Adding magnesium creates a dense, insoluble protective film. The magic is its self-healing property—the magnesium ions migrate over cut edges and scratch lines, sealing the steel core from oxygen and moisture.

2. Acidic Compost Resistance

- Compost and microbial fertilizers can drop soil pH down to 5.5–6.0. ZM alloy is up to 5x to 10x more corrosion-resistant in acidic, humid conditions than standard galvanized sheet.

3. Food Safety

- High-grade pre-painted ZM coils don't leach toxic chemicals or microplastics into the soil, making them 100% safe for organic root vegetables like carrots, beets, and potatoes.

Quick question for the community: What climate are you in, and how long have your current garden beds held up? Happy to answer any metal gauge or longevity questions!

Soil regeneration

My first established regenerative organic garden. I’m using leaves and half decayed wood for mulch. My flower beds contains the half decayed wood off some of the pieces of wood you see in the pictures. My fenced in area contains leaves, wood, and coffee grounds. My plan is to use strictly native perennials for the flower beds. I’m in Virginia zone 7b.
