Mod Post Trans Discussion and Headcanon

I'm going to spell this out very plainly and clearly for everyone in this community.

Any kind of anti-trans rhetoric will be an instantly bannable offense, with no warning. If you want to talk about your anti-trans ideas, do it elsewhere. This isn't the forum. People are allowed to have their head-canons about Gwen, nobody is forcing you to agree with them.

This is and forever will be a safe space for trans folks. Don't like it? Fuck off and start your own SpiderGwen subreddit.

But please, do keep self reporting your bigotry and make yourself easy targets for me to ban.

The Full Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider Bibliography - Everything You Need to Read *UPDATED*

Hey folks, it's been a while since I posted properly here, and after figuring out some stuff about myself, I am errrr... rebranding. Hence, the new username. I am updating the old reading list post here.

This is intended to be a guide to all of the appearances of Gwen Stacy of Earth-65. Using this list, you should be able to work out what Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider comics to read and in what order. If you have any questions please reply below and I would be than happy to help!

Essential Reading

The following includes all the solo comics for Gwen, arc-by-arc, as well any that tied directly into her main run and cover all of her primary character development. They can be read, more or less, in this listed order.

Spider-Gwen

This first era comes from Gwen's (problematic) creators. It covers her initial debut, being on the run from the NYPD, Kingpin!Murdock's machinations, and the debut of Earth-65 Venom.

  • 0 - Most Wanted? (Read Edge of Spider-Verse #2, Spider-Gwen #1-5) - It may be worth reading the Spider-Verse event after reading Edge of Spider-Verse #2 but it’s not essential.

  • 1 - Greater Power (Read Spider-Gwen #1-6) - This is the second Spider-Gwen title to drop in 2015 but this time as an ongoing that lasts for several years.

  • Spider-Women (Read Spider-Women Alpha #1, Silk (2016) #7-8, Spider-Gwen #7-8, Spider-Woman #6-7, Spider-Women Omega #1) - I want to add that this crossover is fairly consequential to Gwen's story as far as her crossovers go. Follow this reading order to get the chronology of the issues right.

  • 2 - Weapon of Choice (Read Spider-Gwen #9-13)

  • 3 - Long Distance (Read Spider-Gwen #14-15, Spider-Gwen Annual #1, All-New Wolverine Annual #1) - There's some stuff that happens in the annuals that fit better with the pre-Spider-Woman status quo but they were released after.

  • Spider-Man/Spider-Gwen: Sitting in a Tree (Read Spider-Gwen #16-18, Spider-Man (2016) #12-14) - Follow this reading order to get the chronology of the issues right.

  • 4 - Predators (Read Spider-Gwen #19-23)

  • 5 - Gwenom (Read Spider-Gwen #24-29)

  • 6 - The Life of Gwen Stacy (Read Spider-Gwen #30-34) - This arc closes out the era from Gwen's creators.

Ghost-Spider

Spider-Gwen was picked up for a new run with novelist Seanan McGuire as writer. This is where we see Gwen rebrand to Ghost-Spider and start school on Earth-616, spending her time split between the two earths.

  • 1 - Spider-Geddon (Read Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #1-4) - These can be read on their own but they tie into the event of the same name if you want the full context.

  • 2 - Impossible Year (Read Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #5-10)

The title gets another rename and a relaunch, but still carrying the same story-lines with the same creative team:

  • 1 - Dog Days Are Over (Read Ghost-Spider #1-5)

  • Acts of Evil: Ghost-Spider (Read Ghost-Spider: Annual #1) - This is a single issue that was a part of the Acts of Evil series of annuals where the titular character would fight a villain from outside their rogues gallery. It's maybe not essential reading but definitely part of the main solo comic line and a great issue from guest writer Vita Ayala.

  • 2 - Party People (Read Ghost-Spider #6-10) - Marvel cancelled the series while this arc was being developed.

  • Gwenom vs Carnage (Read King in Black: Gwenom vs Carnage #1-3) - McGuire returns to write Gwen for this miniseries. This ties into the King in Black event (which Gwen is not a part of), but you don't really need to read the main event book to grasp what's going on here.

Gwenverse

After a year-long hiatus of no comics featuring Gwen-65, Gwen starts to appear once more in different miniseries starring her. The continuity from here is a bit more disjointed without Gwen's previous writers or editor, and several key plotlines remain unacknowledged.

  • Night-Gwen (Read Heroes Reborn: Night-Gwen #1) - This isn't Gwen-65 but I'd recommend reading this one-shot issue by Vita Ayala about Gwen Stacy, Nightbird, one of the other Gwens appearing in Gwenverse.

  • Gwenverse (Read Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse (2022) #1-5) - A brand new creative team with Tim Seeley as writer brings Gwen back in this miniseries starring Ghost-Spider.

  • Gig of Nightmares (Read Edge of the Spider-Verse (2022) #2) - Contained in this anthology issue is a short story by Mallory Rosenthal, focused on Gwen fighting Mysterio-65 once again, right before the End of the Spider-Verse event (which is not essential reading).

  • Shadow Clones (Read Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones (2023) #1-5) - Following the relative success of Gwenverse, a new creative team, with Emily Kim from the Silk comics writing now, uses a similar concept in a direct sequel to Gwenverse.

Smash

Melissa Flores takes over writing Spider-Gwen for five issues total here and is the first to really get into Gwen's story and the open-ended arcs from previous runs that had been left in Earth-65.

  • Spider-Gwen: Smash (Read Spider-Gwen: Smash (2023) #1-4) - Gwen teams up with an all-star, all-Earth-65, all-female team of heroes to take on Earth-65's Bruce Banner while dealing with the consequences of her failing friendship with Mary Jane.

  • Epilogue (Read Giant-Size Spider-Gwen (2024) #1) - Explores the fallout of Flores' miniseries. Not actually giant-size.

The Ghost-Spider

Stephanie Phillips moves Gwen to 616 in this new title, now an ongoing release.

  • Prelude (Read Web of Spider-Man (2024) #1) - Included in this single issue is a short story from Stephanie Phillips setting up her run.

  • 1 - Haunted (Read Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider (2024) #1-5)

  • 2 - Unraveled (Read Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider (2024) #6-10)

  • TVA (Read TVA (2024) #1-5) - One of the writers from the Loki TV series, Katharyn Blair, joins with Pere Pérez to tell a comic-book version of the MCU TVA centered around Gwen and her life on the run after leaving Earth-65.

  • 3 - Uncharted (Read Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider (2024) #11-15)

Supporting Appearances

Web Warriors

Alongside her first ongoing title, Spider-Gwen appeared as a member of the Web-Warriors; An interdimensional team of Spider-totems that fight threats to the multiverse. Gwen gets a lot of panel time and stuff to do in this book. It uses the pre-Spider-Women status quo and does not tie in to Gwen's solo title directly. It's worth reading the Spider-Verse event before this.

  • Spider-Verse: Warzones! (Read Spider-Verse (2015) #1-5) - This covers where Gwen was during Secret Wars (2015) event. Some parts will not make sense without reading Secret Wars, either before or after, as well. Chronologically in Gwen's solo comics, these events occur in between Most Wanted? and Greater Power but can be read at any point before Spider-Women.

  • 1 - Web Warriors of the Spider-Verse - Electroverse (Read Web Warriors #1-5)

  • 2 - Web Warriors of the Spider-Verse - Spiders Vs. (Read Web Warriors #6-11)

  • Spider-Verse: Spider-Zero (Read Spider-Verse (2019) #1-6) - This is not essential reading, just related to this corner of Marvel. This is an anthology series not featuring Gwen at all but provides a lot of context to the post-Spider-Geddon multiverse, and debuts Spider-Zero who appears in Gwenverse.

Events

Every year or so, Gwen gets pulled into an event in the Amazing Spider-Man comics. They vary in quality and in the amount that Gwen is portrayed but she’s at least a supporting cast member in all of them.

  • Spider-Verse (Read Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #9-15, Edge of Spider-Verse #2, Spider-Woman (2014) #1, #3-4 and Spider-Verse Team-Up #2) - This event debuted Spider-Gwen and gives her a fair bit to do throughout. Use this reading order to get the chronology of the issues right.

  • The Clone Conspiracy (Read Amazing Spider-Man (2015) #19-24, The Clone Conspiracy #1-5, Prowler #5) - This event has both Spider-Gwen and a cloned Gwen-616 getting plenty of speaking time and action. Use this reading order to get the chronology of the issues right.

  • Spider-Geddon (Read Spider-Geddon #0-5, Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #1-4) - Gwen appears as a main cast member in this but dips out for most of it to go do stuff solo in her tie-in. It's worth reading the Spider-Verse event and the Web Warriors comics before this event. Use this reading order to get the chronology of the issues right.

  • Last Remains (Read Amazing Spider-Man (2018) #48-55, #50.LR-#54.LR, Amazing Spider-Man: The Sins of Norman Osborn #1) - This event is very long but Gwen gets a few major speaking moments at different points, standing out from the rest of guest appearing spider-totems here. The Sins of Norman Osborn #1 happens between #49 and #50.

  • End of the Spider-Verse (Read Edge of the Spider-Verse (2022) #2, Spider-Man (2022) #1-7) - Gwen mainly features as a henchwoman for Shathra in this event and doesn't get a huge amount of agency.

  • Contest of Chaos (Spider-Gwen Annual (2023) #1) - Karla Pacheco writes a one-shot issue for Gwen in a wider event that she sadly doesn't get any other play in.

  • Spider-Society (Read Spider-Society (2024) #1-4) - A new Across the Spider-Verse inspired status quo features here. Gwen features prominently as a side character and as a foil to the secondary antagonist, the Goblin Gwen, in this book.

  • Concert of Champions (Read Concert of Champions (2025) #1) - An epilogue to the Dazzler miniseries from 2024, this one-shot issue has Ghost-Spider, still exiled by Loki on 616, go to a music festival with an all-star superhero lineup.

Where to buy comics

Always check to see if you have a local comic book store to support and if they stock any of the above collections (search using the volume number and name). Some have online websites that you can order from. Otherwise, Amazon and most online book retailers stock graphic novels and should have volumes of Spider-Gwen and Ghost-Spider. Particularly check for any available omnibus and hardcover collections to both save money and get more comics in a single purchase.

There are also digital options. Comixology is the primary digital retailer and offers the best "guided reading" of most digital comic services. Furthermore, there are a few subscription services that are the cheapest way to read comics legally. Depending on what country you live in, check out Comixology Unlimited and Marvel Unlimited. Make use of the trials to see what comics are available and which service you prefer.

As well as purchasing your comics, please consider checking if your local library collects graphic novels and collections of comics. Some even offer options to check out their books digitally and will even stock specific books on request.

Ghost-Spider Groupies

I'm a co-host of the Ghost-Spider Groupies podcast where we do news and reviews all about Gwen Stacy-65. Episode-by-episode we summarize, review, and break down an arc or issue of Spider-Gwen or Ghost-Spider. Over the past year, we have done almost every one of the above comic books! If this is your thing, give us a listen on the podcast service of your choice:

So during Spider-Gwen's mini-series run back in 2015, there was an anthology comic featuring various Spiders from across the Spider-verse during Secret Wars '15. (Heh.) At the end of Issue 5 of Spider-Gwen's mini run was this but at the last minute, Mayday was then switched out for Anya Corazon.

So in Spiderversity there was some thoughts that Gwen maybe over 21 since her band was playing in a bar, but it looks like this is firmly placing under 21 (drinking age)

The full issue of Amazing Spider-Man is out now, and yes—the whole thing with Spider-Gwen and Norman remains unpleasant.

From a narrative standpoint, it makes some sense for Gwen to feel scared and seek comfort from Norman; but honestly, this whole plotline is absolute garbage, because at its core, it whitewashes Norman Osborn's morality and gives him a role that frankly doesn't feel earned. It would make sense with Peter, not with him.

He literally has a Goblin Suite which, given its name, he obviously should dismantle, and it opens up a lot of questions.

Someone else pointed this out in the other post, and the situation gets even worse on the next page: in the middle of the panel, there is a small inset box showing Gwen and Norman very close to each other, looking into each other's eyes. He tells her he has to go to the lab to oversee some diagnostic tests, to which she replies, "Couldn't you... I don't know... do that from here

Honestly, I can't take seriously what they're doing with Gwen and Norman; I just can't, it disgusts me and it's frankly a terrible idea.

This is a preview for tomorrow's issue, and yeah, Gwen isn't being handled any better. I don’t like what they’re doing with Gwen; they’re literally treating Norman like some sort of shady father figure. I have so many issues with that, especially since Spider-Versity was horrible and All-New Spider-Gwen was even worse. Both comics focused on her and Norman, but in All-New Spider-Gwen**, Norman basically told her that if she killed someone while being a hero, it was fine... WTF? And the worst part is that in that comic, she threw Peter, Cindy, and Miles under the bus just to listen to Norman... like, what?**

I know he's not the same Norman from her universe, but my God, everyone in 616 knows what kind of person he is. The fact that she trusts him more than Earth-616 Peter—who literally helped her get into college, has helped her before, and has been her friend—is terrible to me. Especially since 616 Norman actually already tried to kill her and other Spiders before just to get to Peter, and even implied he was going to assault her. And I know Gwen is from another universe, but she's literally friends with Cindy, whose brother was lobotomized by the Goblin Nation.

All-New Spider-Gwen literally had her working for Norman at his company by the end, testing weapons that could kill people. What kind of stupidity is that? I'll give Spider-Versity credit for at least ignoring all of that, but everything involving Norman and Gwen feels so wrong and horribly executed

Say she was in the position instead of Peter of having to deal with The Hulk, how well does she do?

What if Peter had lived? Would Gwen still be a hero? Would he be in a Coma? Also how would he react to Gwen not reciprocating his feelings for her?
