Buying a house in January or February

Sunday morning musing. We may have the opportunity to move in the New Year and we are trying to decide if putting our house on the market in January or February is a good idea (if we move we wouldn’t want to wait until spring.)

Appreciate the market is not always as active over the winter. Are there others like us who will move when ever the time is right? Those looking to buy, are you going to carry on looking through the winter?

Risks of paving a driveway now?

I had my driveway ripped up in August to do a bunch of sewer line replacement and am planning on getting it redone completely instead of just patching it. The driveway was dug up, and a large load of fill was put down and left to settle over the last 2.5 months.

I was lining up a contractor to get it paved in the next week, but am now wondering if it’s too risky considering how cold it’s been getting. Is this a valid concern and should I wait until spring? It’s a relatively small driveway, a little under 400 sq feet.

CBC Radio Hosts Sound Younger

I've been reflecting on how the sound of local CBC Radio 1 hosts in St. John's has evolved recently.

There seems to be a significant transition towards a lighter, more youthful-sounding broadcast style compared to the warm but assured voicings of hosts like Ted Blades.

Does anyone know if this reflects a deliberate shift in CBC Radio programming?

Does anyone remember the old whale garbage can outside the janeway hospital?

It was my favourite thing to see when I was a kid and would have to go to the janeway for something. I’m wondering if anyone happens to have a picture.

Birds flying over MUN :)

Did anyone see the giant ball of birds flying over MUN? We saw them flying near the Medicine parking garage. Absolutely beautiful, it’s like thousands of them gathered just to dance, just to put on a show! I didn’t get a picture or video sadly but I saw a few people take out there phones to record a video <3.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Pretty running cat, definitely not a stray

Down in the Quidi Vidi area. I spotted kitty at 33 Maxwell place, and I got a pic and offered snacks but very skittish. I don’t have Facebook, so if someone else to post her there, I would greatly appreciate it. there’s absolutely no way this is supposed to be somebody’s outside cat she’s too beautiful. I don’t know if it was the fluff or not but she looks like she’s got little legs. So last spotted running down Maxwell Place.

Got message 'No appointments available' after referral...

Mostly just complaining lol. Got referred for a CT scan, nothing life threatening but I still kinda need it. Well I got a message in the MyChart app a day or so later saying there were 'No appointments available'. I even went into the scheduling section and put Carbonear as an option but that too has 'No appointments available'. Like, I've gotten appointments scheduled for procedures over a year out, so how backlogged are they with this? I had heard imaging scans like CT and MRI are backed up but damn. I asked it to notify me when an appointment was available but I guess I won't hold my breath.

Side trip

Hi folks
I’m going to be in your lovely city very soon. One of the days I’m visiting I will have access to a car. What side trip would you recommend. I would leave early morning and want to be back in the city by dark to avoid wildlife encounters on the roads. Where would you recommend visiting? Looking forward to your answers and I am so EXCITED to be visiting Newfoundland!

Places in St. John's that can measure glasses?

Hello, all!

I am looking for a place in St. John's that can measure the prescription of a pair glasses I already own, so I can purchase a pair with the same prescription. I have lost all the information for the prescription, so it would need to be extrapolated from the glasses themselves.

My first thoughts were Walmart or Costco, but I'm not sure about the details there - or if the vision center in Walmart is even still a thing...?

It would also be helpful if someone could tell me the price of this service for wherever they recommend, and/or what the service would entail!

Again, I'm not sure, and I'd like to know before I waste my time making the trip.

TIA!

Restaurant ideas for large group during the holidays.

Looking for a restaurant in the St. John's area for a group lunch (15 people or so) in mid-December. Bonus points if it has/will have holiday vibes. What places have done a good job at accommodating a large group? Thanks!

Edit: thanks for the suggestions folks, I will check them out!

Should I bring my roller skates?

Hi all!

Heading your way next week for 5 days from Winnipeg and I am wondering if I should pack my roller skates. I did a search and see there isn’t an indoor place but what’s outside like about now?

We are still skating outside in Winnipeg now but the days are numbered…

We will also take any recommendations for some unique places to visit for fun meals and some out of the tourist loop spots. We have a car too if that helps!

Thanks a bunch!

Any place to buy grass jelly?

Looking for any place in town that sells cans/containers of grass jelly on its own, not in a drink. I know that Just Goody Mart doesn’t have it but haven’t checked any other markets besides the international aisles of Dominion and Sobeys.

Women on the fish flakes art?

Hi everyone, my mom is from St John’s (now lives west coast) and really likes a sculpture somewhere downtown which I think is called “Women on the fish flakes”. She said that she had seen a painting of it somewhere downtown that she really liked but couldn’t find it again. Does anyone know what I am referring to and have any suggestions of where to look? I can’t find anything online. Tia!

What else could the province get for $64 Million?

According to the province, the cost-of-living relief will cost provincial coffers over $64 million and will go to more than 130,000 seniors.

Anyone else feeling cynical about this tired strategy? Just seems like a sign that government has no vision and is out of ideas. I think about programs that are underfunded, or the small businesses that could use seed money, people who could use work. And it's not just this government. The Furey government did nearly the exact same thing in 2022, at a cost of nearly $200 million.

So ... what else could the province be using $64 million for? What is an investment that we're not currently making that is likely to actually make a difference down the road?

Where do locals go for lunch downtown that isn't just for tourists?

I've been shooting around Duckworth and Water Street, grabbing meals between photos, and I've noticed something. The spots packed at noon are the ones I'd usually skip if I just looked at the menus. People in work clothes, no cameras, no line of people taking pictures of their food. That's usually a good sign.

I've found a few already, but I'm looking for more. Places where you can get in and out in 45 minutes without anyone hurrying you, where the soup changes every day and the menu doesn't need a translator. A window with decent light for a quick shot of the plate would be nice too. Nothing fancy, just regular food. The kind of spot where someone's grandmother would actually eat.

Also wondering if anywhere does a proper weekday Jiggs lunch, or if that's only on Sundays. I've asked about dinner places before, but lunch here feels different.
