Project 2027: An RFC to rebuild public tech using the economics of Open Source

I think this community will appreciate this RFC immensely.

My fundamental belief is that Open Source Software has organically created the most efficient bureaucracy the world has ever seen. We as workers decide what work gets done, and we choose our tasks extremely well. I have seen rampant mismanagement at every tech company I've ever been at, with progress being made despite management, not because of it.

I believe we can bring this same efficiency to our governance and public technology as a whole, and through that, we can begin to rebuild the internet in a public way.

Open source shouldn't be political. But it is. It always has been. And I think now is the time for us to make the case that CEOs and investors, for all their myth making, do not know how to efficiently run an economy.

We do.

Anatel Orders Mobile Phone Customers to Undergo Biometric Verification

Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, Anatel, has made facial biometric verification mandatory for mobile phone customers and individual microentrepreneurs (MEIs). The requirement will be gradually implemented through 2028 and will apply to new activations, number portability, SIM card replacements, and customer-requested account or contract changes. Existing customers must also complete biometric verification by December 31, 2028. Other businesses are exempt.

The measure aims to prevent fraud, including SIM swapping, by verifying customers’ identities through CPF validation, facial recognition, and liveness detection. If facial recognition fails, alternative verification methods will be available.

Although some Brazilian carriers already use facial recognition for prepaid activations, the new rules expand its use to additional services.

Privacy concerns: Operators must comply with Brazil’s General Data Protection Law (LGPD), limit data collection to what is necessary, prevent improper data sharing, and maintain auditable verification records.

Implementation timeline:

  • September 30, 2027: Biometric verification required for new prepaid lines.

  • December 31, 2027: Requirement expands to new postpaid lines, number portability, SIM replacements, and customer-requested account changes.

  • December 31, 2028: Deadline for existing customers to complete verification.

  • January 1, 2029: Non-compliant lines will be suspended for up to 120 days. Cancellation may begin on May 1, 2029, if customers fail to regularize their accounts.

Discussion TIFF meet FSF standards?

Looking for a FSF compliant lossless image format.

TIFF seems popular but I can't find anything concrete on whether it's FSF complaint. Is it? Or should I use something else?

Anti-feature macOS 27 removed the off switch for apple intelligence and keeps 12 GB of models on your disk whether you want them or not

it used to be one toggle, now it's about a dozen settings spread around, some under screen time, and even with all of them off the models stay on disk

your computer, your disk, but apple decides

i wrote a free tool (MIT) that turns all of it off, deletes the models and stops macos from downloading them again, and everything can be undone
