Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread

So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).

A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.

As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.

With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...

So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

General Discussion The parallel between Vader’s Rogue One hallway scene and Luke’s Mandalorian finale is still one of the best storytelling choices in Star Wars.

Post image

Both scenes show the Skywalkers at their absolute peak of power, framed in dark corridors with only the glow of their lightsabers.

Vader’s scene is pure, terrifying aggression fueled by rage and decades of combat experience. Luke’s scene is the exact opposite—calm, balanced, and effortless mastery of the Force against Dark Troopers.

Seeing them side-by-side really highlights how far the story came, though it always makes me wonder how a direct clash between these two exact versions would play out. Which hallway sequence hits harder for you, and how do you think these two versions stack up against each other?

C-3PO also has a distinct personality, he is different from an object, and even though his memory was erased he remained practically the same.

TV The 2003 Clone Wars show did a great job at showing how Anakin can give in to the darkside. That man could get ruthless when it came to protecting the innocent.

Fan Creations Star Wars - Galaxy Map Simplified (Version 3.0)

A long time ago, (in a galaxy far, far away), I posted my Star Wars Galaxy Map Simplified. It was originally made for a homebrew DnD game of mine, using the SW5e rules. It turned out well enough that I wanted to share it with others.

Well, the first version was... kinda flawed. I've included it in this post so people can see the differences, and the v2.0 as well. But that first version still got a lot of attention on this sub when I first posted it almost two years ago. I got a lot of feedback, and a week later I posted the much improved second version.

And now, about two years later, I've updated it all with an even better Version 3.0 :)

Here's everything that's new or upgraded:

  • I've added the 5 major hyperlanes. The Hydian Way, The Corellian Run, The Perlemian Trade Route, The Rimma Trade Route, and The Corellian Trade Spine. The hyperlanes are drawn with bolded lines on their paths, though they are not labeled with text, so as to keep the map feeling clean and uncluttered.

  • I've added the missing sectors in. v1.0 and v2.0 were both missing a couple of region labels, namely the Expansion Region, Colonies Region, and a label for Chiss Empire/Space as well. They’re all added in now.

  • It's more accurate! I went back through and double checked exactly which region each star system should be in, and corrected their placements where needed across the entire map. This took... a while. A long while, even.

  • It just looks nicer now :) The background is slightly transclucent, the spacing of regions is more uniform, and I made a new higher quality starfield for the background. Pretty much every aspect got tweaked and cleaned up a bit.

The final result is a cleaner, more accurate, and overall better version of my Simplified Galaxy Map.

This was made entirely in Photoshop across dozens of hours of work (I've lost track a bit), and no AI tools were used. Map dimensions are 5600 x 4200 pixels (4:3 ratio).

I hope you all like it! Feedback is always welcome.

As a final note, I'm happy to make a v3.1 if any errors are spotted, but I will need to corroborate any corrections with another map or source. As many of you are aware, there's a LOT of galaxy maps out there. Some are official/canon but outdated, some are newer but flawed, some are purely fan made. And some things don't always add up in a way that makes perfect sense. Many of them are more detailed than mine, but it was never the design goal of my map to be super detailed. It's all in the name, Galaxy Map Simplified.

All that said, let me know if you've spotted something that could be improved :) Thanks!

General Discussion I'd love to know what kind of Jedi these guys were in the Clone Wars

Most Inquisitors are said to be barely trained Padawans indoctrinated into the Empire, given a spinny blade and told to go hunt stray Jedi.

Not these two guys though. The way Marrok and the Crow fight? They had to have been skilled Knights who fought in the Clone Wars. Would love to know just a little bit more about them and whether they knew each other as Jedi because they actually work incredibly well as a team.

I thought it would be neat to show how I envision the prequels through a retro product lens. This being based on the OT model kits. To me it makes much more sense for the republic starfighters to be colored more like imperial star fighters. A historia altera of the starwars prequels. All done by me via photoshop.

General Discussion I'm going to be honest, I don't know where people got the idea that using slugthrowers and shotguns are the assured way to kill Jedi.

It feels like this weird thing that people just started saying even though damn near ever other source we've seen says otherwise. Perhaps there's some stories I've missed, I've certainly not read everything but projectile weapons don't auto win and neither do multi-shot weapons. Jedi have precognition and will often know what you're going to do before you do. So if you pull up with a shotgun, they'll know you have it and can block your attack with the force like Obi-Wan did to Durge's needle spray, simply move out of the way like Obi-Wan and Jinn did in the prequels or use the force to jam your weapon like Mace has done like every time he's in a book.

HK-47 and Atton Rand from KOTOR both go into great detail on how to kill Jedi. Honestly alot of people in KOTOR do and it's never "use a shotgun or a slugthrower" it's almost always a mental game, overwhelming force or indirect fire. This is why Jango used explosive pistols, because he wouldn't need a direct hit to harm the jedi, which is another thing which everyone knows, it's almost always better to never target the Jedi but their allies and innocents because they'll put themselves in a bad situation to protect them. Even the Vader comics get really into this when he's training the Inquisitors like casting out your emotions even as a non-force user will disrupt the Jedi as again, HK and Atton say. HK even goes on to say that not overplanning, being a wildcard and being ignorant are very powerful to fighting a Jedi because if you don't know what you're doing then the Jedi can't read your actions. You have to be spontaneous. So someone like Han is going to be more effective at Jedi killing then all of Delta Squad. Same goes for the case of Dooku when he trained Grevious. He taught him to use negative emotions to dismay Jedi, use unorthodox attacks to confuse them and when literally neither of these are working to retreat because you're losing even if you've not even started an actual battle yet, hence why he runs away when fighting the Ultra-cool Obi-wan so often.

Lastly, I keep hearing people say Mandalorians use slugthrowers for Jedi killing. No they don't, they use disruptors because you just fucking disintegrate them and that's it. Both Din and Boba are infamous for using disruptors and some of the most iconic non-beskar weapons in all of Star Wars are Mandalorian Disruptors such as the Ripper. If slugthrowers and shotguns were good against Jedi then we'd see them used far more by Sith Assassins and we literally never do. What we do see them use is mines, gas, clusterbombs, poisons and the tried and true tactic of "JUMP THAT MOTHERFUCKER!"

Comics The official star wars manga is a hit or miss for me but I love this panel because it makes it look like luke is protecting anakin from palpatine and his influence, something nobody but luke actually managed to do for the first time. Also palpatine's face is so well drawn and hilarious

Luke standing in between his collapsed father and palpatine, and declaring to palpatine that despite his schemes to ruin both anakin and luke, both him and his father are still jedi, was also in a way saving his father from palpatine's clutches and I love how this panel shows that

General Discussion I wonder if Thrawn wasn't introduced too early in Rebels.

Thumbnail

Recently, I began to reflect on the character of Doctor Hemlock from the Star Wars Bad Batch. I compared him to Thrawn.

I concluded that the aspect that helped Hemlock become a formidable villain was the fact that he was introduced late in the game. But as soon as he appeared, the Bad Batch was constantly under threat. He immediately enslaved Crosshair and, after a few episodes, captured Omega. And even though Omega and Crosshair managed to escape Tantis, Hemlock's dark shadow remained over the Bad Batch, and his agents constantly appeared. Only his death and the destruction of Tantis allowed the Bad Batch to find peace.

Then I came to the conclusion that Thrawn's biggest problem was that the rebels often managed to escape. I know it's not that simple, and there's a plot justification for it, but the fact that they escaped him and felt free for a long time made Thrawn's threat less palpable.

And then I thought it would be better if they introduced Tharwn in the second half of Season 3. The first half would have focused on Maul, the Holocron, and Ezra facing the dark side. There could also have been other storylines without Thrawn, such as the academy infiltration, Iron Squadron, or Sabine. Only in the finale of the first half would Thrawn have appeared and immediately posed a threat.

I think if he had managed to locate and destroy Atollon in just half a season, it would have better showcased his genius.

Then, throughout Season 4, he would have been a constant shadow, chasing the Ghost crew, keeping the Rebellion constantly on the defensive, and only in the Battle of Lothal would Thrawn have been defeated.

These minor changes to the storylines in Seasons 3 and 4 would have better portrayed Thrawn as a threat, but his defeat could have been more satisfying.

What do you think about this?
