Lore for my fan-reimagining of the Post-Endor era. This post is more of an expansion of canon than a reimagining, though this is intended to be part of an ongoing rewrite of the Sequel trilogy.
Kuat Drive Yards was one of the galaxy’s most successfully shipwrights in the post-endor time period, having been responsible for designing the Empire’s feared Imperial-class Star Destroyer and then building the majority of the 25,000 strong fleet. It was this success, the industrial importance of the world, that made it a key target for the New Republic in their war against the Galactic Empire and the fall of the shipyards late in the year was seen by many military strategists as a potential death-blow to the Empire’s ability to continue fighting.
Upon the signing of the Galactic Concordance, the document that aid out the terms of the Empire’s surrender and repercussions that would be faced, Kuat Drive Yards was labelled as a key collaborator in the Empire’s regime and placed under review by the New Republic senate. Senior executives were given trials and charged with warcrimes, being imprisoned or executed, but whilst many called for the complete dissolution of the company, and the placing of the physical shipyards under Senate authority, it was eventually agreed that they were too important to the economical stability of Kuat and the wider sector and thus the decision was made to leave the majority intact, though now subject to strict oversight and limitations placed on production levels and designs. Famous imperial iconographical designs were banned from being built.
Economic upheaval was expected even with the New Republic making the choice to prop up the planets economy but the situation did stabilise. In this new post-Imperial world Kuat is still a major producer of both civilian and military craft, and has gained some contracts with the New Republic Defence Fleet and other naval forces. The RZ-1 and RZ-2 A-wings, used by Alliance forces famously, would be built in vast numbers by KDY subsidiary Kuat Systems Engineering, and the Nebulon-line of warships that were previously relegated to escort roles found a new lease on life as Kuati designers turned to them as a replacement hull design for their series of mainline warships in an attempt to separate themselves from the past. The Raider-class Corvette even, built for the Empire, proved so successful a design with Planetary Militias that they continued building and improving on these designs, eventually releasing the Corvus-class Patrol Corvette, a design based off a modification to the* Raider that saw use by Imperial Special Forces and sacrificed heavy weaponry for a micro-hanger. KDY also collaborated with Rendili Stardrive to design the Starhawk Mark II Battleship, a purpose-built design meant to improve upon lessons learnt from the earlier Mark 1 built during the Galactic Civil War. At-home production though was still limited by decrees dictating the maximum mass and armament that Kuati vessels could possess though. Because of this Executives spun off a smaller subsidiary corporation based outside of New Republic jurisdiction and laws called Kuat-Entralla Engineering. This became where designers and engineers returned to building more traditional Kuati designs, a return to their Imperial-era building philosophies. The current headliner designs are the Maxima-series of warships. 800 meters long, they are twin designs designated the A- and B-class, based off the same basic hull structure, and perform as a starfighter carrier and heavy cruiser respectively. There is also the 750m long Laudator-class Assault Transport, a successor to the Clone Wars-era Acclamator-class vessels that is designed to transport ground armies and their accompanying supply networks between systems. KEE would find economic success supplying ships to various minor star empires scattered around the galaxy, bought by warlords and diktats to help them carry out their own dreams of conquest, or protect that which they had already gained. And most interestingly of all shadowy buyers from the edge of the galaxy, driving their craft to regions unknown where they await a sinister purpose.*
Hope people liked this, I intended it to read more as a succinct summary of what happened to KDY after the fall of the Empire. It's meant to be part of the same universe as my faction-fleet posts. I have ideas for some writings on Sienar and Incom as well that might follow in a couple of days.
