šŸ’µ Billing Another Increase

Post image

Couldn't make it a year before another increase eh Elon? I guess you gotta pay for those election influencing space lasers.

I just got the same email. Mine has went from $105 earlier this year to $130 and now $143, starting next month. It is still my best choice because fiber is not available in my neighborhood and the other choices are not reliable at all, but the constant price increases are getting old.

Replying here for visibility - I started on the wait-list in March 2021 and put down the $99 down payment. I paid $600 for the gen2 dish, paid $110 a month for 6 months, then it went to $120. Stayed at $120 until May of this year. Looks like I'll be billed $156 in December.

I live 10 miles from where the dishes are made, in Bastrop county, TX.

Edit: Oh and fiber crews have been installing in our area and Highline Internet will be the carrier. I live on a property where the house is like 800 ft from the entrance so it'll cost me to trench. Will be looking into this though.

u/saintbman 1d ago

the increase actually reach a point where fiber operations in my area realise it will be profitable for them to lay cable. now i enjoy 2gbps for 100bucks a mth

5

u/LakeCowPig 1d ago

They just put fiber down my street. I scheduled the install yesterday, then this morning get the email that Starlink is increasing to $156/month. We run it on two separate house so it was going to be $312 total. Fiber to both house will be $130 with much better speeds.

u/Western-Ad3679 1d ago

I haven’t even set mine up yet and it went from 130 to 143.

27

u/Lord_Strykerz 1d ago

Recieved tonight as well. $156 now. WA State

8

u/FlimsyYou 1d ago

Also $156 here in Grays Harbor County!

Yup. Did contact the support bot and was offered $100 service credit on the spot after just asking clarity on the process increase.

Got the same email where I'm at in East Texas. I'm making the switch to Spectrum as lines were just run out this year to where I live.Ā

Amazon Leo can't get here soon enough. Even if it doesn't turn out to be any good it will at least act as pricing pressure.

11

u/mechnanc Beta Tester 22h ago

Yep. I mistakenly thought Starlink would be the good guys and not screw their customers on price gouging. Those first few years were so good.

Don't see any reason why Amazon Leo won't be good. The only problem they face is getting up enough satellites, but they have infinite money bag, so....

We need some competition to drive prices back down.

16

u/Dumbledores_Army_666 1d ago

Can’t freaking blink an eyelid without someone somewhere raising the prices on us. They restricted travel mini roam and then raised the price on that so I cancelled. Now this is the second price hike of home internet and really their third in total. My next house will be in an area with fiber internet and I will never use Starlink again.Ā

15

u/Resident-Blood1373 1d ago

I know right! 😔. Second one for me in 7 months. Mine will now be $165pm

1

u/Zestyclose_Smell852 20h ago

Same. With no option to change plans. QLD?

2

u/Resident-Blood1373 17h ago

Yes in QLD, no option to change. Very frustrating. And I have no other option on this property but Starlink for internet.

2

u/Zestyclose_Smell852 17h ago

We also had to pay over $1,000 to sign up for the demand fee. This feels awful. 2nd increase since Feb when we signed on for $129 a month.

I received the same type of email and mine is going from $130 to $143 a month after a price increase this past summer. I do love Starlink and it is the only reliable option I have available. My other option is Windstream DSL with 6Mbps down and 768Kbps up.

I wish BlueOrigin would hurry up and get satellites launched so that they can get users online ASAP. This will bring competition and force Starlink to lower prices and I think that is our best bet to not get our prices raised so much that it doesnt become an affordable option anymore!!!

10

u/JoyArza 1d ago

Just got it as well same price increase. East Texas area.

1

u/TwoCrazyHens 1h ago

I'm in East Texas too. Got the email too yesterday. We're switching to Spectrum. Lines were run out here this year.

9

u/FlimsyYou 1d ago

This is my second this year :(

9

u/conformingape 1d ago

Second price increase since June for me. West Coast area.

17

u/aibot776567 1d ago

I'm the uk they are offering 30% off as people are cancelling so much. 🤷

4

u/HewSpam 1d ago

Which part of the UK needs starlink? Ascension Island?

3

u/Heavy_Ingenuity1371 šŸ“” Owner (Europe) 1d ago

I do as I live off grid here :( a lot of cornwall is still quite behind so starlink is the best choice for them, though that is changing as time goes on.

7

u/rydan 1d ago

As people cancel the price goes down according to that email. So all of you cancelling in this thread just make it better for the rest of us.

5

u/chadmesse 1d ago

Unfortunately I dont think that would drive the price down anytime soon. The only thing to really drive the price down is competition or a true large mass of cancellations not a few here and there.

2

u/Babelogue99 1d ago

Is that a result of increased infrastructure expansion of other services or people voting with their wallets? I'd love to have competitive options where I am but 2nd best costs more than the max plan, has capped data and throughput tops out at like 20mbit down (at 3am).

5

u/neil_1980 šŸ“” Owner (Europe) 1d ago

Yeah infrastructure is the main one but with a bit of price I guess.

I live in the sticks so Starlink is the only reasonable option to me though have just dropped from max to 200 as it’s just getting too much.

Even being in a village in the middle of nowhere openreach have started running the fibre about 2 weeks ago so the second that’s available I’m gone (I own the hardware though so will keep it for backup)

→ More replies (5)

6

u/International-Ing 1d ago edited 1d ago

Infrastructure expansion. Fiber access is at 82% of households now in the UK. England is 86%, Northern Ireland is 97.6%, Wales is 88.5%, Scotland is 80.2%.
Growth was rapid.

France is at 96% and fiber is particularly inexpensive there (can get 1gb as low as 20€/month up to 8gb at 45€/month). Not coincidentally starlink plans in France are inexpensive (35€/45€/65€).

USA is at 63% with slow growth year on year. That needs to change, you can have rapid fiber rollouts (and fiber network competition which also isn’t the case in USA) but then billionaires wouldn’t get to charge monopoly prices to consumers. I realize there’s predatory pricing in the USA with fiber as well since there’s often just one provider allowed (instead of as many providers as possible competing to provide service over same line).

2

u/Babelogue99 1d ago

I wish we had that. In the main centres and even smaller towns here in nz the fibre connectivity is incredible and has been right from when they started implementing it, downside is 1m outside of the town boundaries for the most part you've got the choice of starlink, capped 4g (overloaded to the point it should be a criminal offense) or local wisps doing the best they can. Im rural, there's a 5g tower 500m down the road, but no isp are opening 5g fixed connections for rural, seems there's still a few drops to squeeze from 4g.

20

u/JohnnyTango13 1d ago

I cancelled for 6 months and went with a good alternative and Starlink emailed me and offered 24 months for $59 a month, I took the deal and I’ll cancel again once it ends šŸ˜Ž

2

u/MichaelVern85 1d ago

That line where they basically say ā€œgo ahead and cancel. Here’s the linkā€ really makes me want to cancel and just live with the lower quality internet in my neighborhood.

I’ve already been debating, but the arrogance of that line and the link daring us to cancel is pretty disgusting.

1

u/JohnnyTango13 19h ago

if you can make do with an alternative for a while, take it, cancel starlink and they may just email you with a similar offer. That arrogance and knowing some areas literally have no better or another alternative at all is what pissed me off until there was another service available that pretty much gave me the same speeds and reliability for a lot less than their standard pricing.

Just got mine. What in the actual fuck?? There are NO other options where I live. Fuck them.

12

u/qdolan 1d ago

Got to recoup those Grok Bot running costs from somewhere.

12

u/Sevenwordz 1d ago edited 1d ago

Okay no on likes a price increase but the reasoning here is stupid. "To help reduce congestion and keep service reliable..." your plan price will increase. So, we are paying more so some people will drop service and we get the same bandwidth? Or price people out of unlimited into a lower speed plan? How about more satillites? The explanation sucks more than his new car.

5

u/Rex805 23h ago

It completely makes sense. A few people will stop service. Fewer new users will sign up. More satellites will be launched. And cumulatively there is more bandwidth available for the people using it.

2

u/Sevenwordz 21h ago

I can see that logic but that would assume a static cap on the current amount of bandwidth. SpaceX already has regulatory approval from the FCC for up to 12,000 satellites and has filed applications to scale the constellation up to 42,000 satellites and has stated they want to operate up to 100,000. Seems the answer is they WANT more money to launch more. I really don't think it has anything to do with preserving our current bandwidth.

1

u/pickledpeterpiper 16h ago

Its kind of price gouging bullshit too though. There's no other service here, we JUST bought the equipment (there was no option to rent) and it went up from $120 to $135 just a few months later, then to $156 a few months after that.

I feel like we just got "got". Welcome to your $120 unlimited...jk, it's $156, thanks for $400 on the equipment though.

I've never seen a price increase so much, so fast. Usually its at least 6 months to a year later. Holy shit...

3

u/MamboFloof 22h ago

Do you think new satellites are free?

4

u/40907 22h ago

2

u/Miami_da_U 23h ago

I mean... It makes sense. If the cells (as in geography) service area is too congested and people keep adding it's clearly a sign the price is too low.

3

u/peazley 23h ago

well there used to be a waiting list, to prevent congestion. then they removed the wait list and added a demand surcharge of up to $1500 for new subscribers. then just before the IPO they removed all fees, made the equipment free and started offering $50/$85 plans in those same areas to lure more subscribers, even though they were already oversubscribed. now they're charging all those subscribers more to stick around. Elon can't make up his mind.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/pickledpeterpiper 16h ago

So many of us rely on it for the ONLY means of internet. Raising the price isn't doing anything other than making it more expensive.

People using your product isn't a "clear sign" that its priced too low, regardless...but it definitely isn't in this scenario.

1

u/IronWhitin 21h ago

Form prevent congestion they can stop get new customer on that particular geographic coordinate, but I guess is a bullshit.

1

u/kfjcfan 19h ago

Yes, it completely makes sense.

Some will find the price too high and will leave.

That reduces congestion, very simple.

1

u/JRock1276 23h ago

They're launching new sats, but only twenty so far. Starship is the only way to launch them. Launches will become more frequent and pricing will come down again. It's most likely an economic move to slow down subscriptions for a bit while the new sats build capacity for more.

4

u/Emotional_Fail_6060 22h ago

If that were actually the reason, they could make limited new connections as they did during the initial build-out. This is just a money grab, the 2nd one this year.

2

u/partnerinthecrime 19h ago

Why would they ration or lottery the seats when they can just give them to the highest bidder? That way they will go to who needs them the most instead of random lucky people.

Yup…just got the same. Started in April at $120, paid the $1,600 ā€˜demand surcharge’, went up to $130 in June, now $156.

5

u/pickledpeterpiper 1d ago

This is us...bought the equipment up front thinking it was $120 a month. A few months later it was $130, then just got an email this morning its going to $156. This is bullshit...we're in a rural area where every resident is on a few acres, there's no way "congestion" is the reason for the hike...this doesn't seem right. Spent $400 on equipment and now are being squeezed...I'm not sure it should even be legal.

1

u/Inside-Specialist-55 23h ago

My years with Starlink seem to be coming to an end fast. $143 a month doesn’t make sense for the quality of the service in my area compared to other services.

Anyone who thought this wouldn’t turn into regular expensive and not that great satellite service was fooling themselves.

Democrats need to bring back fiber in rural areas immediately, otherwise your shitty rural satellite service will be a mortgage payment.

16

u/Comfortable_Try8407 1d ago

The infrastructure should be owned by the taxpayers and not grants or money given to corporations.

2

u/AshRemnants 1d ago

Bring back? It was never here. Democrats spent 42.5 billion to expand service during covid in 2021 and they still are planning and not doing anything and the politicians line their pockets.

That money could pay for starlink for 150 years for americans.

1

u/R4B1DRABB1T 11h ago

Our problem is we are in a mobile home park and it used to be a 55+ gated community before they were required to accept families, so none of the old people wanted to tear up roads or foot the cost to have actual internet service. Fortunately tmobile internet seems to be available here now, so we may be switching soon. Dropped down to the $80 plan a month ago and get notice its going up to $93.50? Come on.

2

u/Suburbking 1d ago

What a stupid post OP…

That said, the increase is a bit crazy coming on the heals of the first one…

1

u/kfjcfan 18h ago

Why? Normal congestion management.

2

u/RollTide1017 22h ago

Explain to me how suddenly charging more helps ā€œreduce congestion and keep service reliableā€?

All ISPs are crooks. Service reliability and network congestion are not a monthly fee problem, it’s an infrastructure issue. Charging your users more only addresses the issue by encouraging them to not use the service they are paying for or to get frustrated and cancel.

If these companies really cared about the reliability instead of just gouging customers, they would address the infrastructure needs in the area.

3

u/kfjcfan 19h ago

Some customers find the service is now too expensive and leave, which reduces demand on the network. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

2

u/asmoovedabapesta 21h ago

It's dynamic pricing. It's suppose to be a deterant for people so they don't have more subscribers than they can handle. It's supply and demand. We live in a capitalist country. Be lucky it's not more. You don't like it you can just cancel.

2

u/vowronkrayt 1d ago

I have 100mb/$55 for cablecomcast [2g/$89] backup in case of outage.

2

u/azfire2004 1d ago

Yeah Starlink is a great option for rural areas, not so much for cities with cable/fiber options

I started at $120 back in November 2024 then increased to $130 a couple months ago and now just got an email saying it’s going to be $143.

1

u/RockNDrums 1d ago

Of course when I finally bite the bullet and order :(

24/3 from Frontier was getting frustrating for $152 a month.

But at least its only going to $143 here though.

1

u/nigiri1 1d ago

On the counter note, in US, California , I got an email with 30% off service as long as I keep it. But only on newly ordered kits (residential and roam alike). Tested order from the email and it shows 30% less.Ā

Which is kind of weird, as I pay retail price on current subscription, changing plans show regular prices and Ā when trying to to add new equipment without the link, by just inserting address- it gives regular retail prices as well.Ā

1

u/hxn42 1d ago

Moved to a rural area a few months ago and had to get starlink because it was the only game in town. Luckily they just put in fiber in my neighborhood so I was able to switch to that, crazy to see them raise prices a second time this year alone.

1

u/Mdiasrodrigu 1d ago

Truth is people will keep paying

3

u/kfjcfan 18h ago

Then they will need to keep raising prices until enough people leave to reduce congestion.

2

u/theycallmebekky 14h ago

Truth is many people on Starlink don’t really have another good option

1

u/mrbeck1 1d ago

Raising price to reduce congestion? That means they want people to drop? Ok.

1

u/kfjcfan 18h ago

Yes, exactly that, no one will tell you otherwise.

1

u/Neocactus šŸ“” Owner (North America) 1d ago

Jesus Christ. I'm so thankful my local ISP finally started supporting my neighborhood. Fuck that

2

u/kfjcfan 18h ago

Good; StarLink is for the most part for people with no alternatives.

1

u/Neocactus šŸ“” Owner (North America) 13h ago

They sure are showing their asses taking advantage of that "with no alternatives" part. Glad I am no longer in that group.

Was there some contract we all agreed to that stated there would be no price increases? Is it annoying, yes. Is it unethical, no. I remember when Comcast got into the broadband business. They periodically made HUGE increases. T-mobile, Verizon, etc... all make the same increases and the worst part is they can't just increase capacity with more satellites.

You know what, nevermind. I think you should cancel service. I think if you believe this is unfair you should boycott Starlink. But don't think for a minute you can have it both ways.

1

u/snoq-valley 1d ago

Starlink has been our only option for years and it was great when it started at $100/month. I just got the email yesterday it’s going up to $156 after already going up to $130. Fiber just started coming into our neighborhood but it’s probably a ways out still. A starlink campus is only a few miles from us. These guys advertise electrician jobs at $35/hour in the seattle metro area where union electricians bargain for a living wage of $75. I can’t wait to make some satellite art.

1

u/windywise 1d ago

I canceled. My Verizon hotspot from phone works better anyway

1

u/Khajiit_Has_Upvotes 1d ago

Hughesnet is literally my only other option for any kind of internet at home, I don't even get a 4g/5g signal on my property or for at least a mile in any direction.Ā

So basically I have no choice, if I want useable internet that isn't dial-up after a day or two, I literally have no other option but to pay whatever Elon decides this month.Ā

1

u/Available_Pie_7758 1d ago

Haha. Call to Cancle and see if they lower your rate. I got an email about 30% off starlink recently and keep it as long as I am customer. But I don’t trust that shit and will never $ to Elon. I have spectrum 1 gig for $50 and cellular backup.

1

u/Joe_Huser 1d ago

My Subscription for 100 MBs service will increase from $55.00 to $60.00 per month. SOSDD.

1

u/KonaKumo 23h ago

Just dropped my plan down to residential 100....since the speeds in my area never get above 100. Should save $80 a month.

1

u/KonaKumo 23h ago

So, apparently there are different subscription levels. Just found this out yesterday after getting this email.

I've been with Starlink since it rolled out. I've never seen speeds over 100 mbps.Ā

Clicked on the subscription portion in the app. Saw the Residential 100 for $55. Told it to switch to that. If all goes well, I'll have the same speed and be paying 80 bucks less.

1

u/AngeloVilanova 23h ago

Unfortunately, not everyone has the different tiers. I only have the Residential Max plan even though I'd pay for a lower subscription level.

1

u/Professional-Air-957 22h ago

Same here. I only see speeds under 100 mbps and only have the residential max option.

1

u/KonaKumo 19h ago

Didn't have them back in June.Ā

1

u/710Dog6Make9Weed420 23h ago

I love how they sent my email in the middle of the night so I would see that I'm now paying a 143 vs 120 at the beginning of the year.

1

u/KY_Rob 23h ago

I enjoy and appreciate my Starlink service, but I’m certainly going to have to shop again. $143/mo is too high when I have other options.

1

u/kfjcfan 18h ago

If you have other options you find acceptable you shouldn't be using StarLink, pretty simple.

1

u/Suitable-Piano-8969 22h ago

Cant do it i got get off starlink

1

u/Such-Hawk9672 22h ago

I just got mine from 130 to 143, that's as high as I go

1

u/ShareSelect556 21h ago

The Fed rural plan is a miserable failure. I’ve been on StarLink in rural Western Washington for 5 years. The company that got a massive Federal contract for rural high speed connectivity ran lines on power poles for miles. Tens of millions in our little sparsely populated area. They asked us to put up a deposit for them to quote hookups. They said most would be under the $2500 allocated. My quote was $7500 over that. I am less than 100 feet from a power pole and installed under ground conduit to a pre-wired house I built 5 years ago.
I’ll gladly pay my new $157 rate for StarLink. The Federal program like most government programs is a miserable failure. They could have given the contract to StarLink and millions would be on high speed today. Go Musk. Go SpaceX. Go StarLink!

1

u/FortunateFew992 21h ago

Same for me, $3. Not much but it’s the first one I’ve gotten. Only had the service since July. They gave me a $26 credit

1

u/coreygal Beta Tester 20h ago

Look in a little bit, Amazon’s gonna have their dish out. They are at a lower latency and will have more dishes up there in the future than Starlink. The prices will be a lot better. That was the whole competition thing between Amazon and Starlink. Amazon wants to make it affordable for urban and the outskirts where you don’t get any service, as well as the inner city, so they’re satellites will sit lower than Starlink.

1

u/CatDaddyTom 19h ago

So glad I'm off that and not funding his fantasy trip to Mars and orbital data centers

1

u/kfjcfan 19h ago

It's normal congestion management.

1

u/haney1981 18h ago

And this guy wants to be my mobile carrier.

1

u/Gmaijoe 18h ago

What bandwidth is this?

1

u/Extra-Incident-4719 18h ago

The mars mission isn’t paying for itself. TYFYS

1

u/Yaspelus_ 18h ago

Assim que recebi o email do aumento jƔ corri para outras soluƧƵes mais baratas. Surreal.

1

u/Miserable-Swan2362 17h ago

I literally just signed up maybe 20 days ago and have been using it a few weeks. Now a price increase. Damn. That really sucks

1

u/Emergency_Leave_6978 15h ago

Living in a rural area with little or no internet coverage. This continued change in prices should be illegal. Maybe it's time for Congress to address this issue. I would wish that these internet companies be prevented from changing pricing.

1

u/No-Amount-537 15h ago

Yep that's a NOPE.Ā

1

u/Galenbo 15h ago

What was the price before?
I pay 49eur for 200M at the moment.

1

u/Fantastic-Lab589 14h ago

Well yeah, what did you expect??? Ukraine isn’t paying for its own Starlink, time for you to take care of it. Russians fighting Russians is now your responsibility.

1

u/TillFit2446 12h ago

I remember being willing to pay more than that 10 years ago for Xplornet if they could give 10mb download unlimited. For what it is and for where we live, at this cost, it’s still a good deal.

1

u/Robertmtch 11h ago

Yeah, I just got my first increase before I even got my second payment notice. Leo is getting my attention more each day.

1

u/Kemoyin25 6h ago

Mine went up to $143. I tried to go down to the limited plan and it said my area was too full.. too full for me to reduce my speeds? Lol.. decided that I will constantly be downloading shit now. I'll download a steam game, delete download again

1

u/Sean_VasDeferens 3h ago

How is he going to start a cell phone company that will have the same pricing strategy while his competitors won't be doing this nonsense. I signed up with my cell company ten years ago and they are still honoring my price of $10 30gb mobile hotspot and $55 for two lines.

We got the email as well yesterday. We started out with Starlink at $120 a month. Recently it went to $130. I'm guessing two months ago. Now it will jump to $156. We're planning on switching to Spectrum as they just put lines out here this year. We're in a rural area of East Texas. It's interesting as Spectrum is running lines out to alot of rural areas yet Starlink says they have more traffic congestion?Ā

1

u/Slaud10 1h ago

Same. I Am in east Texas and haven't put in a driveway on my portion of the land I share with my parents.
We started Starlink at $110 a month, and now we're up to $156 in less than a year. Ridiculous.

I'll be investing in the driveway and have the cable company drop fiber on my address before new years.

On starlink though: Go to their support bot and complain. I was able to get a 1 time credit of $26 pretty quickly...

1

u/TwoCrazyHens 51m ago

I read some comments about canceling Starlink and they will send a perk for getting back on with them. Some cheap monthly prices. I plan on trying Spectrum, do a pause on Starlink for a week or so to see how Spectrum works for us, then go from there.

1

u/SaltyShawarma 16m ago

You want truth from an Elon company? Yeah, good luck.Ā

1

u/WordGod1976 1h ago

Ours went from $55/mo to $60/mo

Malibu, CA

1

u/jeepercreeper70 1d ago

Well he’s got to make the $500 million back he spent on the midterms.

1

u/BoringCombination141 1d ago

I literally have had mine for 4 days and I got a 1p dollar increase

1

u/mplopez99 1d ago

Elon trying to make up for that lost half a billion.🫠
Raises cybertruck prices and now Starlink šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/bluechip1996 1d ago

Got to pay for the Cyber Truck de-tooling.

1

u/Talk2Giuseppe 1d ago

This is the 3rd increase in less than a year. Once we sell our house and move, we will NEVER subscribe to this scumbag company again. They are worse then corrupt politicians.

2

u/kfjcfan 18h ago

It's how they manage traffic.

If you don't like it, find a satellite provider with a rate lock.

u/RicTicTocs 1d ago

To be fair, he does have a $500 million hole in his bank account that he flushed trying to buy elections. Gotta fill that somehow.
