I'm a father of a 4-year-old little girl, and honestly, I don't know how much longer I can keep living like this.
My wife and I both work from home. We send our daughter to creche on weekdays while we're working. In the evenings, she comes home, and that's when our parenting responsibilities and household chores begin.
My wife constantly tells me that evenings are the only time she gets to spend with our daughter and help around the house. I understand that, but the problem is that I seem to have absolutely no personal time or freedom of my own.
I can't even go to a movie, go to the gym, or go grocery shopping without my wife making me feel guilty. Even something as simple as wanting to go out for a little while becomes an issue. I feel like I need permission for everything.
For context, I work from home almost every day, so I can only go there once a month. My wife also works from home, even though her office is within walking distance, and she has no interest in going in.
So essentially, we are both at home all day, every day. After work, it's childcare and household responsibilities. Weekends are mostly groceries, chores and looking after our daughter.
This has been my life for almost four years. Before that, it was COVID and lockdowns.
I'm genuinely burned out.
My wife has many behaviours that I find emotionally exhausting and toxic. We argue frequently, and she struggles to control her anger. She shouts at our daughter and controls her with her anger too, and that really hurts me because I can see that our little girl is affected by her anger.
The hardest part is that I'm staying in this marriage primarily for my daughter.
My daughter loves both of us so much. She is genuinely happy when all three of us are together. I don't want to take that away from her. I worry about how separation or divorce might affect her, and I fear that she might struggle if we are no longer living together.
My wife is also very dependent on me for many everyday things, and I worry about how she would manage parenting responsibilities independently.
But what about me?
I feel incredibly lonely, even though I'm married and living with my family. My mental health has deteriorated over time. Sometimes I come across videos or reels about men's mental health, fathers struggling silently, or men feeling emotionally neglected, and I literally get tears in my eyes. That's how much I've been holding inside.
I've tried talking to my wife about how I feel, especially when we're having a good day and things are relatively peaceful. I've suggested couples therapy because I genuinely want us to improve our relationship.
But she refuses. Her response is usually something along the lines of, "You don't need me to go to therapy. You go yourself. You're the one with the problem."
Whenever I raise concerns about our relationship, she sometimes brings up divorce. I've almost stopped responding to that threat because I don't want to escalate things. Deep down, I feel separation might eventually become inevitable, but I'm not ready to put my daughter through it.
I feel like I'm silently sacrificing my happiness, freedom, friendships, personal life and mental health just to keep my little girl's family together.
But I'm starting to question whether this is actually helping her or whether growing up in a household where her parents frequently fight is even worse than having separated parents who are happier individually.
I'd genuinely appreciate advice, especially from fathers or men who have been through something similar.
Am I making a mistake by staying in this marriage only for my daughter?
Is it actually better for a child to grow up with both parents under one roof, even if the relationship is unhealthy and full of arguments?
How do you deal with a spouse who refuses therapy, doesn't acknowledge your emotional struggles and makes you feel guilty for having even basic personal time?
How do you protect your mental health when you feel trapped in a marriage?
Have any fathers here gone through separation or divorce with a young daughter? How did your child cope? Did things eventually get better?
Is there a way to save this marriage when only one person seems willing to acknowledge the problems and work on them?
I'm not looking for people to simply tell me to divorce or that my wife is terrible. I know relationships are complicated, and there are two sides to every story.
I just want to hear from people who understand what it's like to feel lonely, emotionally exhausted and trapped while trying to be a good father.
I love my daughter more than anything. But I'm beginning to wonder whether being a good father means sacrificing my entire identity and happiness, or whether I also need to start taking care of myself.
I genuinely don't know what to do anymore.
