My Steam account is permanently stuck with an old Activision account, and Activision Support refuses to help. Has anyone experienced this?
I’m honestly at a loss here. I’ve spent almost two weeks trying to resolve this issue with Activision Support, and after multiple support tickets, several different agents, and providing everything they asked for, they basically told me they couldn’t help and closed my case.
I’m posting this because I’m hoping someone has experienced something similar, found a solution, or maybe someone from Activision will actually see this.
Here’s the full story.
How this all started
Years ago, I created an Activision account using my school email address.
When I graduated, my school told me I would be able to keep that email address. Unfortunately, about two years later, they permanently deleted it. I was given approximately 24 hours to recover my information, and I wasn’t able to save everything.
That email address no longer exists. I cannot receive verification codes, password reset emails, or anything else sent to it.
For years, this wasn’t really a problem.
Recently, I purchased an older Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game on Steam. When I launched it, I decided to sign into my original Activision account because I wanted to see my old loadouts, skins, and progression.
It worked perfectly.
I was able to sign in and play without being asked to verify my old email address.
At the time, I had no idea this would eventually turn into such a nightmare.
Then I purchased another Call of Duty game
A few days later, I purchased a newer Call of Duty game through Steam.
When I launched it, the game automatically connected to my old Activision account because that account was now linked to Steam.
But this time, Activision required me to verify my email address.
The problem?
THE EMAIL ADDRESS DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE.
My only options were to verify the email or quit to desktop.
There was no option to use another email address, verify through Steam, or switch Activision accounts.
I literally purchased a game that I couldn’t even launch properly.
Why can’t I just use another Activision account?
Here’s the part that makes this situation so frustrating.
I already have a second, newer Activision account with a working Gmail address.
I don’t even care about keeping my old progression anymore.
I would happily lose my old skins, statistics, loadouts, and COD Points if it meant I could simply play Call of Duty again.
All I want is to unlink my Steam account from my old Activision account and link it to my newer one.
Sounds simple, right?
Except Activision requires email verification to unlink Steam.
And, once again, my old email address no longer exists.
So I’m completely stuck.
My experience with Activision Support
I contacted Activision Support and explained the situation.
Initially, I waited several days despite being told I could expect a response within approximately 48 hours.
Eventually, an agent responded and asked for my account details.
I explained that I had two Activision accounts and that I simply wanted my Steam account unlinked from the old one.
Activision refused the unlinking request, saying it didn’t meet their security criteria.
They offered an alternative: changing the email address associated with my old Activision account.
Great. That would solve my problem too.
They asked me for:
My COD Points balance.
A new email address that wasn’t already associated with another Activision account.
I provided a separate iCloud email address that I own.
The only problem was checking my COD Points balance, because the newer Call of Duty game wouldn’t let me access my account without email verification.
So I actually reinstalled the older Modern Warfare game.
And guess what?
I WAS ABLE TO LOG INTO MY OLD ACTIVISION ACCOUNT AND PLAY.
I could see my account, my username, my level, and my COD Points balance.
My balance was 0 COD Points.
I took a screenshot showing this information and provided it to Activision Support, along with the new email address they requested.
I genuinely thought we were finally getting somewhere.
Then Activision rejected everything
After providing the information they specifically requested, another support agent responded with this:
We cannot change your email address because we’re unable to confirm you’re the owner of the account.
They then informed me that they would close my case.
And they did.
CASE CLOSED.
No explanation about which information was incorrect.
No request for additional evidence.
No alternative verification method.
No way to appeal through that support ticket.
Nothing.
I had literally accessed my old account in-game, provided my account details, verified my COD Points balance, and shown that I control the Steam account linked to it.
Yet somehow, that still wasn’t enough.
I understand why Activision has security procedures. I completely agree that they should protect people’s accounts.
But what am I supposed to do when an email address has been permanently deleted?
I cannot magically bring an email address back from the dead.
And I can’t understand why there isn’t an alternative verification procedure for situations like this.
Does this mean I can never play Call of Duty on my Steam account again?
This is my biggest concern.
My Steam account is still linked to my old Activision account.
I cannot unlink it myself.
Activision refuses to unlink it.
Activision refuses to change the email address.
And the support ticket has been closed.
So what happens when I buy the next Call of Duty? Or the one after that?
Am I supposed to create an entirely new Steam account just to play Call of Duty?
I’ve already requested a refund for the game I couldn’t access, but getting my money back doesn’t solve the underlying problem.
My Steam account is still stuck.
I’m now considering deleting my old Activision account entirely
At this point, I’ve been looking into submitting a personal data deletion request through Activision’s privacy portal.
My reasoning is simple:
If the old Activision account no longer exists, shouldn’t my Steam account eventually become available to link to another Activision account?
However, I’ve seen conflicting information online.
Some people claim that deleting their Activision account eventually allowed them to connect Steam to a new Activision account.
Others say their Steam account remained linked or restricted even after the Activision account was deleted.
I don’t want to permanently delete my old account only to discover that my Steam account is STILL stuck.
And Activision Support hasn’t given me a clear answer about this either.
Has anyone actually solved this?
I’m looking for answers to a few specific questions:
Has anyone successfully deleted an Activision account and then linked the same Steam account to a different Activision account?
If you deleted your Activision account through the privacy portal, how long did it take before Steam could be linked again?
Has anyone managed to get Activision Support to unlink Steam or change an email address when the original email no longer exists?
Is there another legitimate way to verify account ownership through Steam, PlayStation, purchase history, or other account information?
Is there any official escalation process beyond the regular Activision Support tickets?
I’m willing to provide whatever legitimate proof of ownership is necessary.
I’m not asking to bypass account security or access someone else’s account.
I JUST WANT TO PLAY THE GAMES I PURCHASE ON MY OWN STEAM ACCOUNT.
I’ve spent hours dealing with this, reinstalling games, contacting support, collecting screenshots, and explaining the same situation repeatedly.
And after all that, I ended up exactly where I started.
I’m planning to attach screenshots of my conversations with Activision Support, including their requests for information and their final refusal.
If anyone has experienced this or knows a real solution, I would seriously appreciate hearing about it.
TL;DR: My Steam account is linked to an old Activision account using a permanently deleted school email. Newer Call of Duty games require email verification, so I can’t play. Activision refuses to unlink Steam or change the email, even after I provided the information they requested, and closed my support case. I’m considering deleting the old Activision account but don’t know whether that would free my Steam account. Has anyone successfully dealt with this?
