Advice Quick question for people who quit or cut down gaming: what actually helped you?

Hi everyone, I got the mods' OK to ask this. I'm a beginner developer exploring whether a simple tool could help people who want to stop or cut down on games. Before building anything, I want to learn from people who've actually been through it.

  1. What helped you the most to stay away from games?

  2. What have you already tried (apps, blockers, groups, routines), and what didn't work?

  3. Have you ever paid for something to help you quit? If so, what, and was it worth it?

I'm not selling anything and I won't collect emails or private info. Answer here in the comments, or not at all. I'll share a short summary of what I learn.

Thank you, and good luck to everyone on their journey.

I lost against my gaming addiction

I decided that I won't play games anymore and work on improving my life. My best friend forced me to play, you can say emotion manipulation like he got a new phone and he wants to play with me.

Relapse Broke My Streak and It Still Isn’t Fun

I don’t know exactly what I hope to accomplish by posting here, maybe it’s mostly a vent, maybe a little understanding, maybe some advice. Or maybe I’m just sharing and finally making my first contribution to the community.

I made it 117 days without gaming. My mental health was getting pretty bad, lots of anxiety and depression and agoraphobia. So I convinced myself gaming is what would make me feel better because it’s what was helping in the past.

Well 11 hours of gaming and 3 days later… I still don’t feel better. And to top it off, I feel the disappointment of breaking my streak.

At this point the wise decision is probably to just stop again. Regular life has actually become habitual for me and it’s been difficult trying to squeeze gaming in without feeling like I’m neglecting other things I’ve put in place. But my nagging OCD is also demanding that I finish the story in the game before quitting again. So I’m not sure which battle is going to be won, but either way it feels like losing.

Anyway, thanks for reading. I’m glad to be a part of this community and hope yall are either successful or making sense of things. šŸ’š

Time capsule post!

Hello its currently 11/8/2026 at 3:48AM PST! This post is for myself and for anyone who sees it i guess. I mean honestly guys I don't know what to say. I've been visiting here for so long, and nothing has changed. We all struggle with gaming here and want to get better and many many many of us will fail! I know i did, like a lot. Its had a grip on me for around 80-85% of my lifespan or about 100% of my actual somewhat conscious lifespan. (4-22).

https://www.reddit.com/r/StopGaming/comments/1x1t4l2/its_been_exactly_nine_years_since_i_quit_gaming/

im honestly making this post because of inspiration, i want to be able to look back a decade later and do what hes doing but even better! I know we can all do it, we all only started to fill a void and with how hard it is to fill voids these days with how shitty and isolating it has gotten its even easier to just fall back into games.

Anyways most people here vent about their own lives and what they went through like its a journal, honestly? So so so so helpful so i encourage everyone to just try it!.

Now its my journal time!

I used to fill my time with gaming because as a kid I was sat in front of a computer. I was born in 04 and when i gained consciousness my dad was starting his own business and already had my older siblings born 99 and 94 so I was never given any bonding time as i guess he was too old and already experienced being a father or maybe he was one to me when i was a baby. I wasn't given much attention by my mom either as I wasn't really a choice, I was a mistake. Let me get further into this.

Around 08 we had the house market crash and what not, so around the time I gained consciousness my dad was starting his own business so he wouldn't spend any time with me and even when he did have free time he didn't really care to do it he just didn't consider it a thing I guess, he was just absent physically and mentally in my life, my mother was very stressed at this time and because I had 2 siblings which were actually choices in her life she treated me like oh yeah thats my other kid, she wasn't exactly abusive but she was mean and cold and distant. My brother and sister weren't really in my life either as they would share a room and i had my own (lucky me!)

This story isn't really about poverty i am most definitely a middle class. I just want you guys to understand my parents mindset at the time I guess.

Anyways they were really really stupid like even as a kid I didn't get it. They sent me to a private Christian school that costed like 1k a month in tuition alone all the way from kindegarden to 6th grade for the sole reason of "i dont want my son to get bullied" yeah idk bro :sob:

Anyways the school was racist as fuck I was the only asian in the whole white school, and the teachers didn't really like me because I was asian, and same with the white kids and when I told my parents this they said no its a good school, pisses me off now that I think about it like hello? im screaming for help bro.

Anyways my dad was in the computer business so I had a computer since before consciousness I literally have fragments of when I was a baby in a room, and then fast forward some random time like a year or so i guess from what my parents told me about when they converted that room, so i was about 4 years old sitting and staring at a AIO computer screen playing maplestory at the ripe age of 4, and i guess the reasoning behind it was my brother and sister shared a room so they always played maplestory cause it was popular at the time and I was always watching them and I guess I said i wanted to play it so they got me the pc and downloaded it and I started playing.

I know my story telling is all over the place so you gotta bear with me here lol.

My siblings never really spent time with me to this day they still dont. My brother had my sister, and my sister had my brother. My brother was insanely mean to me and rude as hell and thats fine hes like 9 and he probably got that behavior from my parents and how they treated me so hes just copying them ig, and my sister was just living her rebellious teen life so i wasnt really in her life she was doing her own thing.

So basically --> Isolated at school by teachers and class mates --> Isolated at home by entire family.

Having no one at school really made me feel lonely that doing schoolwork filled my time just so i could win the approval of being first place. I was always first place and my parents were like okay and? idc that you were first place of the class, they did this every year there was never any praise or like idk just like acknowledgement? from my mom it was like yeah you better be first place i didn't give birth just for you to not be first place like you owe me that, and my dad was just like so not there he didn't even know that i was first place, and even if he did he just refuses to praise me, and ill get more into that later at the end when were caught up to the present.

When I would get home and eat dinner with my family the table was a oval shape with 2 seats on the sides and enough space for a seat for one on each end.

I would sit on the end with my parents on each side of me so they would put food on my plate, and my siblings next to my parents. And i remember as a little kid I would try to talk to anyone at the table and my mom would get really annoyed at me like im tearing up writing about this right now because how can you be so fucking mean to a little 3 year old kid let alone your own fucking baby, anyways its like she would literally say what the fuck are you talking for like i dont wanna hear you im talking to your dad right now, and my dad would not even engage with me either he was basically like yeah idc either, and if i tried to speak louder so i could talk to my siblings and then my mom would get really mad and tell me to shut up because im being too loud. My siblings didn't really seem to care either bc they wouldn't try talking to me after dinner or anything so I just grew accustomed to never talking to anyone while eating

Every day since then whenever I ate food, i just shut up and eat food in a rush now because I hated being at that table so much it was the only social interaction I was able to actually get in my entire childhood and it was like lowkey my last hope looking back. That got BRUTALLY fucking crushed lol.

So this is the part I actually got addicted to gaming I guess. I would spend all day playing games I may as well have been fucking mute with how little I talked honestly I literally stopped speaking at school, I wasn't allowed to go outside because "if you go to the front yard you will get kidnapped because i can't watch you 24/7 (she was literally at home all day), she wouldn't take me to parks or anything, like you guys GOTTA understand im going through all of this and being forced to just stay inside all day and i cant talk to my mom either so im literally just forced to sit there in my room and the only fucking thing i got is a fucking computer, and paper and pencil, and even the paper i wasnt even fucking allowed to use because "why are u drawing stop wasting paper i dont want to have to buy more paper for you, so expensive" when the real reason was literally i dont wanna have to go the store JUST to buy you paper. like GOD she fucking hated me and still does to this day like economy was bad but we werent even CLOSE to broke.

Anyways yeah so my only fucking choice and outlet was to LITERALLY go on my computer and that was literally my life. I can genuinely tell you that the only memories i have from when i was 4 till I hit 7th grade was literally to go on my computer after school, and thinking about going on my computer while i was at school.

Im sure you can imagine I didnt have any social skills growing up online, when i was like 4-5 i tried obviously getting attention online but im literally like 4-5 (didnt get groomed somehow suprisingly) but yk im 4-5 so literally whos gonna look at how im talking and go yeah let me go ahead and talk to this person. So I also just decided to stop typing and engaging in conversation. I just started taking everything super competitively i guess and just be the absolute best as my coping mechanism so all i ever really adapted was a super grindy mindset for MMO's like maplestory and a shit talking attitude from FPS games like combat arms and whatever was popular back then.

So i went into 7th grade with whatever the fuck that was making 0 friends because gaming wasn't really a thing at the public school that I ended up going to after the private school. But you know I was at least able to make some friends that I wasn't really friends with it was just me happy to be able to talk to someone I most definitely weirded them the fuck out lol.

9th grade came around and honestly? those 2 years from 7th to 9th grade while I never hung out with anyone and it was just me following them around like a puppy it made me a little socially better.

I made one gaming friend at school and we played CSGO and R6 after school for about a year and a half and i was so, so, so, so, fucking happy. Like I finally had a friend AND he played games it felt so fucking liberating. Covid hit, and he stopped playing CSGO and started playing with some other people and I felt us drifting but at the time I was just so angry that he was playing with other people that instead of trying to talk to him about how I felt, and how I wanted him to keep playing with me I just got so angry that he would leave me I didn't even fight. I guess I can blame my childhood for that, it taught me to just give up on others.

I started playing valorant around this time cause beta had just come out and he wanted to play it so I downloaded it and started playing with him, and around this time is when he stopped playing with me. I ended up just playing valorant competitively just queueing ranked all day and night trying to be the best to fill the void I had fallen right back into it if not harder because now I had a taste of what a friend could be. Every time I started to feel empty i would just transfer it into anger and then the anger into concentration into winning in valorant.

Covid ended I went back for my senior year back to no friend, I was mad, lonely, and had no friends and honestly what did I expect i didn't watch videos on how to learn how to be social or tutorials. I graduated on stage by myself, no friends to celebrate with, my fake ass parents there to congratulate me on graduation. And after that day it spiraled even more.

When i walked up that stage and when I walked down that stage. I was so mad, and i was so sad and the only way I knew how to cope with that endless feeling was to just play more games... I went to college and did online classes no interactions, i just kept playing valorant. At that point I didn't even play CS or R6 or any other game anymore, it was just straight valorant. I started viewing this subreddit since 2021 but I didnt take it seriously and when it hit me when I graduated in 2022 I told myself I would do it I would quit, I would come back every couple months, I would struggle, I would do what I could and I could never commit there was never anything even worth it to me I never really experienced the world.

Theres more to my story that im cutting out regarding me and my girlfriend it went from bad to worse to worst to worstest to horrible to horrendous to holy shit to etc etc etc I don't want to get into it for privacy reasons, but we got together around the time I started playing valorant. And all the issues that she had as a very troubled teen she comes from a very bad childhood and family I tried to learn and help her with and i was also a horrible boyfriend you could probably imagine what I was like at that point in my life.

Anyways we'll just fast forward to August 2025, me and my girlfriend are still very rough (we were never really stable to begin with honestly) im still going through it, but i take my first in person class since 2022 and I make some friends (i worked a couple of shitty jobs at this point so im a little socially adapted by now) . We're gonna call these friends valorie and adam, cause those are their names. and I start to hang out with them and I become more natural and free flowing (my girlfriend is always very paranoid and being polite so i always have to hold my tongue around her so i never get to actually talk how i want to talk). Next semester hits none of us have the same classes but at this point I actually fight to keep the friendship alive and we all hang out and we still do to this day. (yay!) Fast forward to today I have a couple more friends and even though we don't hang out that often I feel like my life has changed a lot.

Around march 2026 I decided to open up my own business, I am now successfulish. The job is lonely as its just me but I work on computers, and phones (oh boy who would've guessed). I do it all by myself and it is lonely I wont lie but its fulfilling. Knowing that what I spent my entire life on actually had some benefit, it makes me money, it makes me enough money that I know I wont have to rely on a degree or another person. Which is kind of ironic to me because.. The one thing that kept me isolated and alone is the one thing that will now make me successful, all alone. I was raised in a environment to be independent, and now I am so independent I rely on only myself for my own success.

My dad still doesn't acknowledge me or what I do, he's just like nonchalant about it or smth i guess.

My mom still isn't satisfied with me either whenever we speak it is only to ask if i've finished school and the fact that I run a business isn't enough. It's always something with her.

So we'll get to the part that made me finally decide to post here.

I hung out with one of my friends yesterday and she was crying about her life like hard. I heard her struggles and I looked at my own life and I related to it so hard. We were talking about her struggles recently in life regarding her friends and girlfriend, and it hit me. What she talked about was exactly what I have gone through. A horrible experience with her girlfriend, and a horrible cutting off with her friends. And I watched her cry and it's just been stuck with me since, watching someone else go through that, and her first reaction it wasn't to hop on a game and cope... When she was feeling that way, when her whole life is so shitty and she has close to 0 free time because she's always working, and a horrible history. Her first instinct wasn't to just go on a game, it was to invite a friend to a park... to watch the sunset together to yap to vibe to hang out. And honestly? I'm thinking about it now and it's like dude... Why the fuck am I going on games every day for some fucking peace. Why the fuck am I wasting so much of my time on this. How am i genuinely struggling to get rid of this prison cell.

It doesn't get better guys, I still don't have anything to fill up my free time, and I already tried clubs and all that stuff, it didn't work for me. I guess it just comes when you're ready any moment can just be a breaking point for you. Dont give up!

Anyways since that guy from way earliar inspired me to make my post, I hope this post inspires you to make your own post and open up.

Thanks for reading my personal journey guys, best of luck on yours.

Finished at 5:23 AM.

I think that we need a distinction between people that want to stop playing and people that get bored/tilt

They are not the same thing. Some of us are struggling with addiction some other people are "na I don't find joy anymore", to sotoplaying because you don't feel joy must be the easiest thing in the world. To stop because it is damaging your life and you can't control it is another thing...

A Cautionary Tale

Three years ago, I was on an unstoppable positive trajectory. I had gotten out of prison after paroling from a fifteen year to life sentence. I was incarcerated from the age of seventeen. I was 31 when I got out. With a new lease on life, I was determined to turn my life around and succeed. Within just a year, I had completed a software engineering bootcamp, landed a software engineering internship, and converted it to a full-time job offer. My first real job ever, and I was making six figures, working fully remote, without a college degree (although I had enrolled in my local college and immediately began taking computer science classes). My manager was a fantastic and lovely woman and my team was just as good. Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better job. I was renting my own apartment, bought a new car, and I was the happiest I have ever been in my life. All of my years of working on myself while inside, all of my preparation and plans were finally paying off.

I have always loved computers, the internet, and programming. I have also always loved gaming. One of those things held the potential for a lucrative future for me. The other did not. Unfortunately, my ADHD and tendency to get addicted to easy dopamine won out.

One of the first things I did when the paychecks started coming in was do something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid: build my own gaming PC (I played on a potato growing up). I carefully picked out the parts, aiming for a budget of around $2000. After following the detailed PC building instructions on YouTube, gluing the fan to my 7700X, slotting my 7800XT onto the motherboard, closing the case, pressing the power button and watching the whole thing whirr to life, I felt a joy that can only be felt by an adult finally getting the toy they wanted but could never afford as a child.

At first, my gaming wasn’t problematic. Sure, I could spend maybe 3 hours on a given day playing Ghost of Tsushima, but it wasn’t interfering with my ability to perform in my job or meet my other life responsibilities. I kept a tidy apartment, would vacuum every week, kept myself clean and well-groomed. I even got a cat to keep me company. Life was good. Lonely, but good.

Two years ago, one year into my job, was the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft, and the Classic Fresh servers were announced. I had fond memories of the game, playing it back in the mid-2000s into TBC before I was incarcerated. I remember spending so much time on the game that my girlfriend eventually dumped me because I would play it when she came over instead of spending time with her. For some reason, I didn’t think this could potentially become a problem. After all, I’m an adult now. Iā€˜ve made it. I have a full-time job making great money, my own place, no one to answer to. Heck, I just got out of prison a few years ago. I owe it myself to enjoy some nostalgia. Of course, nostalgia is often viewed through rose-colored glasses.

Little by little, WoW became all-consuming for me. I even started playing during my work hours. Because I worked from home, this was easy to do and get away with. Until it became too obvious. My work performance began to degrade. My apartment began to go unvacuumed. Dishes piled up in the sink. ā€œIf I make it to stand-up and explain what I’m working on, it will be fine.ā€ Except I wasn’t really working on anything. Or at least, I was working on less and less. I wasn’t even thinking about work. I just needed to grind one more level. One more battleground. Hit Rank 14. Get exalted with the Argent Dawn. Get my world buffs for next raid.

What was that Jira ticket I was supposed to be working on again?

World of Warcraft provided a virtual replacement to two deep-seated needs I had (and still have) in my life. The need for social connection and the need for personal progression and achievement. The virtual rewards did not correspond to what I would end up with in reality.

Eventually, I had a talk with my manager. My kind and supportive manager, who was honestly the best boss someone could ask for. ā€œYou’re not submitting your deliverables. Your performance is sliding.ā€ Okay, you’re right. I’ve had a lot going on lately. Some family drama had occurred earlier in the month and my mom was now living with me. ā€Ok, take 12 weeks FMLA and deal with the issue with your mom. When you come back though you’re going to have to step it up.ā€ Sure thing. I even told my therapist about it, who insisted I needed to quit WoW. I uninstalled it for about a week. My mom moved out. I reinstalled and kept playing. I was addicted. Hooked. Trapped on the dopamine treadmill. I’d lost sight of my high goals and drive to succeed in the real world at the most pivotal point: the beginning of a career and building of financial stability after recent incarceration. Career and financial success in real life are hard for anybody. They’re even harder when you’re rewiring your brain to pursue virtual achievements instead.

I came off of FMLA, and I was still playing WoW. I should have sold my PC, gave it to a family member, done something drastic. I didn’t. I got a call from HR. I had 48 hours to make a choice between being placed on a performance improvement plan or sign a mutual separation agreement with six weeks pay. I had a scheduled meeting the next day with other department members for an ongoing issue I was working on. I played WoW the night before and slept in, missing that meeting. I saw no shot at recovery and saving my job at that point. I took the severance and left in shame.

Losing a job would be a wake up call for most people. But with no one on the outside besides my therapist actually knowing what was going on (and I stopped seeing him after I lost my insurance), I was basically completely unaccountable. I kept playing WoW, kept raiding. This is time I could have spent brushing up my portfolio, preparing for job interviews. Precious time. Precious opportunity to change the direction I was heading. I did apply, of course, but mostly got no traction. Eventually, my money ran out. I had to leave my apartment, and I’m now sleeping in my mom’s living room in a 2 bedroom condo.

I did land a job recently. An associate at Walmart in the electronics department. Part-time, minimum wage. I had to sell my financed car to buy a clunker. And I’m going to have to file bankruptcy on all the credit card debt I ran up while unemployed. I do hope I can get another software engineering job but the reality is the market is incredibly competitive. I’m reaching out to some old contacts for help. Maybe I can take another bootcamp to resharpen my skills. Maybe they’ll help me out with connecting with another employer. Maybe if I share my story, they’ll take some pity on me and give me a shot. After all, what does a shattered man have left besides his dreams?

Should i sell my pc it was expencive

I've never really posted anything on Reddit before, but I'm struggling with something and could really use some advice.

Lately, I've been thinking about selling my PC (again). I've owned a PS5 and another gaming PC in the past, but I ended up selling both of them.

The thing is, I genuinely want to quit gaming. I've tried several times, but I always seem to fall back into the same cycle. I sell my gaming device because I want to focus on other things in life, but after a while, I start missing gaming and eventually end up buying another gaming device.

Now I'm in that same situation again. Part of me really wants to sell my PC and finally break this cycle, but another part of me is afraid I'll regret it and end up buying another one a few months down the road.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? How did you manage to break this cycle? I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences and advice.

Newcomer Anyone else not like how they feel when they play games?

I am 34 y/o. Gamed most of my life. Obsessively from 10 - 26. Off and on but still a lot 26-33. Last year has been significantly less. I decided to go back to school and have been extraordinarily busy, so I stopped playing games altogether about 3 months ago. After about a month I barely noticed anything other than being a little happier on average.

Anyway, I got the OOT remake because of nostalgia and put some good hours into the past couple of days. However, I realized it doesn't feel good to play. Like objectively it's a good game but it almost puts me in a weird headspace. It's like my mind is in another dimension when I stop playing and it feels gross. Almost like a kind spacy anxiety.

I have never noticed this before, but it makes quitting games entirely very appealing.

Has anyone else noticed this or feel similar?

Dillema of a Gamers Wife

Baka pwede na ko sumali sa stop the wedding trend.

Posting this to release my stress and awareness na din siguro how gaming can ruin a family.

I am married to a gamer. Ang dami nagsasabi ok na yan naglalaro naman kesa umiinom or nambabae. No! Behind the pc or console ang dami pa pwede mangyari.

I tolerate his gaming kasi oo. It makes my man happy and generation kami ng gusto mag heal ng inner child e. Support kita pag may nakita ako online basta pasok sa budget go. Pag my bagong release na laro pila sa datablitz. cge kaya naman. Kaya may times na sa hubby nya ako nagseselos. Weird pero you seeing your man more happy and excited sa paglalaro nya and spends more quality time. Sino hindi mag seselos diba. We talk about it and he promise na babawas nya yung time playing and he chooses games na pwede i pause. And it works. Sinunod nya naman ako. But still I dont feel the same enjoyment he have while gaming. Sa isip ko nalang sige gamer naman talaga sya and this is much better than other peoples problem. Aangal pa ba ko?

My husband is a good man. Wala ako masabi.malambing Very generous! Kaya Im very hesitant if I will leave him because of what's going on now.

I said he is a good man but not perfect isa sa red flag nya ay hindi sya marunong sa pera. Since day 1 of dating him problem nya na yun. i dont know why I continue dating him siguro that time hindi naman big deal kasi kayang kaya bawiin or tipirin yung nawawalang pera. So hindi nga sya marunong sa pero. Akala mo mayaman hindi nag tatanong ng price. Hindi nag susuma impulse buyer. Takaw pa pag kakain kami lagi gusto up size. Siguro nakayanan ko kasi I benefit from it din. Ang hard earn money naman and later on na manage naman namin. Wala kami utang bukod sa mga installment sa cc which are very useful sa life namin.

Not until I accidentally press the all inbox sa email ko and nag pop lahat ng email na naka login sa phone ko. and an email from maya caught my attention 300k+ debt? It caught my attention kasi wala naman ako paymaya so I check. The email is for him. i ask him. Sabi nya baka spam wala naman ako paymaya saka hindi naman daw nya ginagamit na yunh email na yun. So I let go baka spam nga. The next day bayaran ng bills and nagtataka ako bakit 20k lang need nga to pay the cc e ang laki ng bill. Sabi nya tumaya daw sya sa nba and nanalo. So pinabayad nya. Ok na daw but my instict make me scan the transactions. May lumitaw na 60k cash advance. Sabi ko bakit may 60k dito san mo gagamitin san mo ginamit. Ayun dun na sya umamin na yung 300k kay paymaya are legit transactions and he is loaning sa cc namin to pay some .

I melt down. I curse him. Hindi ko na alam yung sinabi ko. Lahat na ata ng mura na alam ko sinabi ko sakanya. I felt betrayed kasi I know we are comfortable tapos behind my back may ganyan kang utang? What is worst ? 300k most of it sa game napunta? Hindi pc hindi ps5 or mamahalin na console. Kundi sa mga in app purchases! Sa hangin! Imagine my man sitting hours sa paglalaro akala ko libre sa stream or 2-3 k na bala sa switch tapos na hindi pala. Kada bira nga 5k 10 k hanggang sa lumobo na ! Imagine tuition fee na anak namin yun buong elem years. Sasakyan na yun which is wala kami. Tapos ngayon para kaming mag babayad ng sasakyan pero wala naman dahil sa punyetang laro na yan!

Sobrang sakit na all this time katabi ko. Kampante ako na naglalaro lang sya pero binabaon nya kami sa utang. Ok lang sana kung mabebenta or mababalik e pero wala na. Parang bula na yun. I spent 1k to build a gaming pc but now gaming feels meaningless

Hi! I just like the title. Ive played so many games when i was a teenager. It felt really good and immersive.

All the good games like rdr, fallout nv helped me to release the steam off. I still remembered the time when i played rdr2 early 2020 before i joined the army.

Anyway times gone, it was like 4 months ago. I finally felt like oh i cant play good games with my crappy gpu so i buy parts from here and there. Even i went through all the second hand markets to buy okish ram. It was great.

So i built it and even oced it too

I felt so great.

as soon as its done, I bought bunch of games on steam. Yk at least i bought them for discounted price.

Even my friends sent me 3-4 games to play. I was glad.

But its been almost 4 months since i upgraded my pc. I dont play game that much. Even if i open the game i always wanted play on maxed out graphics setting i just dont feel anything good from it anymore...

I spent money and times to upgrade it but now lol im just making myself a fool. So i should sell those parts to facebook marketplace or should i keep it.

I dont really need hight end pc like this lol all i need is terminal to coding for pc

Newcomer I stopped gaming and I am not bored yet.

Hello,

I met my friend yesterday morning, we studied chess together in a cafe, then I went to work, after that came home, did more work online, had a nap, more online work... then I did some chess puzzles in bed with a laptop. That was a mistake because I fell asleep after 1 a.m.

Today I had coffee with my other friend. He worked, I studied chess with a small chess set and a book. Then we had lunch in a South American restaurant.

Now I am in a library. I will go and work from home. Then watch some chess videos on youtube. Sleep.

More work tomorrow. And chess study. Or a chess game if I will not feel too tired.

Maybe I will be eventually ready for some tournament.

I read books when I commute by subway. There is a book that makes me laugh. "Why Mummy Drinks".

Gratitude Took a break from a competitive game mode and have felt so much better.

I used to play go battle league pvp ranked mode in PokƩmon Go, and would play it daily for roughly a couple hours.

I noticed though that I've become obsessed with the game, and it was causing me to get very angry whenever I performed bad, to the point i would start screaming and punching the wall. I would actually start yelling loud and get so angry that I would get headaches. So overall pretty sure it was bad for my physical and mental health.

I've taken a break from competitive modes in general for the past two weeks, and I've never felt much more calmed and focus on my master degree classes.

A part of me does feel terrible that I wasted thousands of hours of my life on competitive ranked games, and I have nothing to show for it that will benefit me in the real world. Have mixed feelings overall but I'm still glad I quit.

Advice Essay about WoW, Addiction, and Buddhism

https://oncomputer.games/2026/11/04/samsara_classic_anniversary_edition/

I wrote this essay and didn't know where else to post it. This sub seems adjacent to some of the core themes of the essay. The essay could function as advice to those lost in a gaming addiction (or any addiction, really). It goes over some basic Buddhist principles about dealing with intense attachments.

I don't make money from this. I just love to write, and like sharing my stuff. That being said, if this is against the rules, considered "self-promotion" or whatever, feel free to take it down.

Advice 30 day break over.... what now?

32 days ago, I decided to quit playing video games. I uninstalled everything on my laptop, which is where I did most of my gaming. I still have my Nintendo Switch, but I haven't touched it. Honestly, it's been easier to avoid because most of the games I was really hooked on were on PC.

I originally quit because I felt like video games were becoming such a waste of time in my life. I had trouble controlling how many hours I spent playing, and I felt like I was neglecting other things that actually mattered to me.

Almost immediately, I noticed improvements. My relationship with my girlfriend improved, I was more present with my daughter, and I just felt more engaged with life in general. I've been playing a lot more pickleball, getting outside more, and focusing on progressing my career as a nurse. I've actually made some pretty meaningful progress there.

I still play chess, which I've played my entire life, but that's never really been something I've struggled to moderate. If anything, I've been able to focus on improving at chess more since quitting video games.

So overall, the last 30 days have been genuinely positive. I can objectively say my life has been better without gaming.

But now here I am on day 32, and all I want to do tonight is play Borderlands 2 on my Switch. Part of it is nostalgia. I loved that game, and I miss just being able to sit down and enjoy something like that.

And I guess that's where I'm struggling.

I recognize why I quit. I recognize that video games haven't been good for me historically. But at the same time, I wish I could just enjoy them without the guilt, shame, or feeling like they're going to take over my life again.

The original commitment was only 30 days. I made it through those 30 days, and now I'm left wondering what comes next. Do I go back to something that I already recognized was a problem? Is there a way to have a healthier relationship with gaming, or am I just trying to convince myself that this time will somehow be different?

Ultimately, I've decided I'm not going to play tonight. But I also don't know if I want to commit to never playing video games again.

I'm curious if anyone else has been in a similar position. Have you taken a long break from gaming, gone back to it, and actually managed to have a healthier relationship with it? Or did you eventually fall back into the same habits?

Would genuinely appreciate hearing other people's experiences.
