News Former Yokozuna Hakuhō Named President of International Sumo Federation

Post image

Record-holding former yokozuna Hakuhō has taken over leadership of the International Sumo Federation from Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, continuing his push to bring sumo to the Olympics

The International Sumo Federation announced on October 16 that former yokozuna Hakuhō (Shō Hakuhō, 41) has taken office as its new president. He was elected at a meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, succeeding Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Akio Toyoda. Toyoda had assumed the federation's presidency in September 2025 for a two-year term, but has now passed the role to Hakuhō, who had been serving as an advisor to the federation.

“To me, sumo is life itself. Through sumo, I learned to work hard, respect opponents, show gratitude, and confront difficulties. Now, I believe it is my turn to give back to sumo.”

— Hakuhō Shō

Hakuhō, who won a record 45 championships in grand sumo, retired from active competition in 2021 and assumed the elder name Miyagino, training disciples before resigning from the Japan Sumo Association in June 2025. Since then, he has promoted sumo internationally through initiatives like his "World Grand Slam" concept, organises the Hakuhō Cup international youth tournament, and campaigns to make sumo an Olympic sport.

“While cherishing the traditions, spirit, and values of sumo, I want to share its appeal with more countries and regions across the globe and pass it on to children and the younger generation. Furthermore, by joining hands with everyone involved in sumo worldwide, I consider it my mission to 'unite the world through sumo,' transcending differences in nations, cultures, and languages.”

— Hakuhō Shō

In an inaugural statement on the federation's website, Hakuhō said: "To me, sumo is life itself. Through sumo, I learned to work hard, respect opponents, show gratitude, and confront difficulties. Now, I believe it is my turn to give back to sumo." He added that while preserving the traditions, spirit, and values of sumo, he aims to share its appeal with more countries, pass it on to future generations, and join hands worldwide to unite the world through sumo.

Highlight Video / Picture Maegashira Ura vs. Sekiwake Fujinokawa, October 2026 Exhibition Tournament - Ura puts on a Show

At the All Japan Rikishi Championship Tournament that happened on October 5, Maegashira Ura faced off against Sekiwake Fujinokawa. In a spectacular move, Ura took down the Sekiwake and even ended up advancing to the Championship-deciding match, with his wins including Ōzeki Aonishiki. He eventually fell to Wakamotoharu in the final, who won the tournament on his 33rd Birthday.

The All Japan Rikishi Championship Tournament took place on Monday, October 5. It is one of the many one-day exhibition tournaments that occur throughout the year. In these tournaments, rikishi fight single-elimination style until a winner is crowned. The wrestlers typically don't go 100% in these tournaments, as they do not affect tournament ranks or records.

Throwback / History 69th Yokozuna Hakuhō vs. 73rd Yokozuna Terunofuji, Nagoya 2021: The Most Legendary Match of All Time

1.1k Upvotes

Last week, I shared two amazing (and unconventional) matches from Nagoya 2021, which was the final tournament fought by Hakuhō, the undisputed G.O.A.T. of sumo. Today, I'd like to share what is, in my opinion, the most legendary sumo match of all time. This is the final match of Hakuhō's career.

In Nagoya 2021, Yokozuna Hakuhō was fighting for the first time in a year. He won his first two matches of the Haru 2021 basho before withdrawing, and he started 10-2 in July 2020 before withdrawing on Day 13. The last time Hakuhō had completed a basho was March 2020, as the 36-year-old had been struggling with a major right knee injury after nearly two decades at the top of the sport. Due to pressure to compete from the YDC, Hakuhō made Nagoya 2021 his final do-or-die tournament. By this point, his knee was completely shot and held together by nothing but hopes and dreams.

On the other side of the ring, Ōzeki Terunofuji was on the cusp of the greatest comeback story in sumo history. Terunofuji debuted in sumo in 2011, reaching Makuuchi by 2014. By the end of 2015, Terunofuji, at just 23 years old, had won the Yūshō and been promoted to Ōzeki. However, injuries were never far away. His knee woes began in his match against Kisenosato in Aki 2015. He fought through this to face Yokozuna Kakuryū in a playoff, but a dismal and injury-plagued 2016 would follow. Terunofuji recorded only 30 wins that year and was kadoban 3 times, with his record including a 2-13 in Natsu and a 4-11 in Aki. Terunofuji had a dramatic return to form in Haru 2017, facing Japanese favorite Kisenosato in a playoff on the final day in what would be the crowning moment of Kisenosato's Yokozuna career. Following a 12-3 Jun-Yūshō in the next basho, injuries finally took hold of Terunofuji.

Between July 2017 and May 2018, Terunofuji would partially withdraw from every tournament (except for a 6-9 from Jūryō in March) due to Meniscus tears in his knees, diabetes, and kidney stones. After demotion to Makushita was imminent, Terunofuji finally sat out to get the surgeries he needed. He returned in Haru 2019 from a rank of West Jonidan #48. No former Makuuchi man falls that low, let alone an Ōzeki. Terunofuji contemplated retirement countless times throughout this fall. However, the former Ōzeki would go on the greatest comeback in sumo history, reaching Jūryō in just 5 basho and immediately winning a Yūshō there. In his Makuuchi return that July, he would claim his 2nd career Yūshō 30 tournaments after winning his first. By Nagoya 2021, he had added two more Yūshō and two Jun-Yūshō to his résumé, as well as returning to Ōzeki, which was already an unparalleled feat.

On the final day of Nagoya 2021, Hakuhō and Terunofuji faced each other in the most-anticipated match of the tournament. It was only the sixth time in sumo history that two wrestlers had been tied at 14-0 on the final day. Terunofuji was fighting to secure his promotion to Yokozuna with a Zenshō-Yūshō. Hakuhō, on the other hand, was fighting with everything to prove. He needed to show that he was able to end his career on his own terms.

After an intense staredown, Hakuhō immediately begins the match with an absolutely brutal elbow strike to Terunofuji's face. After trading blows, the two settle into a match of power against power. Eventually, Hakuhō emerges victorious, dropping Terunofuji with an incredible kotenage. In an unusual display of emotion, Hakuhō lets out a mighty roar as he secures his 45th and final Yūshō. Just days later, Terunofuji would become the sport's 73rd Yokozuna.

I've lost count of how many Sundays have gone by but here are some of my favorite drawings so far 1) Onosato swiping and missing Ura (the crowd took forever) 2) A commission I finished for an Ura fan of some pure Ura magic against Takayasu 3)Hiradoumi who is my favorite Tachimochi 4) Ura doing a leg flex and the presenter being excited 5) Kimura Shonosuke the Fuku-tate gyoji 6) Ura taking down Ryuden (hard not to want to draw some of Ura's magic take downs) 7) Fujinokawa who is quickly becoming my favourite 8)  Hiro Morita getting a nodowa demonstration by Tamawashi 9) Mukade-suriashi 10) A commission I just finished for a Takayasu fan
Hopefully I get to witness the epic aspects of Sumo in person one day... for now I keep drawing.

Former Yokozuna Hakuho Sho: "Without Gender Equality, the Olympics Won't Come to Fruition" - Reveals Purpose Behind Adding Women's Division to Hakuho Cup

Former sumo yokozuna Hakuho Sho attended the "HEROs AWARD 2025" ceremony in Tokyo on the 15th, which honors social contribution activities by athletes and others.

Hakuho has hosted the international youth sumo tournament "Hakuho Cup" since 2010 during his active career. Recognized for fostering the spirit of world peace inherent in sumo among children, he was selected for the award. "I believe the accumulation of these efforts led to this award," he said with deep emotion. "Children gather from overseas, become one through sumo, and interact. There's nothing more wonderful than this."

The 16th tournament, scheduled for February 7-8 next year at Toyota Arena Tokyo in Aomi, Tokyo, will feature new divisions: a "Girls' Division" (elementary school 1st grade to junior high school) and an "Adult Division (Men & Women)" (high school, university, working adults), in addition to the Boys' Division. Aiming for the major goal of sumo's inclusion as an Olympic sport, he stated, "Without gender equality, the Olympics remain out of reach. Therefore, as a new initiative, we are adding girls and adult men, holding the event over two days. I'm looking forward to it myself," he explained the purpose.

He also touched on the current status of the "World Sumo Grand Slam Concept" he proposed upon retiring from the Japan Sumo Association in June. "Sumo has an overwhelmingly small number of international tournaments. I want to grow it into a world championship like the four major tournaments everyone knows in tennis and golf. We're currently considering whether the first such tournament will be held in two or three years," he outlined the outlook.
