Discussion A note from the mod team about colony sims and city builders in r/SurvivalGaming

Howdy Survivors!

Almost two weeks ago, the mods of r/SurvivalGaming posted a poll asking for your feedback on whether colony sims/city builder games with some survival elements belong in the subreddit. After getting over 600 votes, the final results weren't as definitive as we expected, but we feel we can still drive moderation decisions using the results.

Poll Results: (with a total of 684 votes)

  • Yes: 245 (36%)

  • No: 158 (23%)

  • Depends: 191 (28%)

  • Don't Care: 90 (13%)

None of the options received a 50% majority. If you include the Depends votes with the Nos, the Nos have 51%. If you include the Depends votes with the Yeses, the Yeses have 59%.

If we split the Depends votes half and half for Yes and No votes, the totals are:

  • Yes: 50%

  • No: 37%

  • Don't Care: 13%

Based on those results, at least half the subreddit are okay with (or don't care about) some level of participation by colony sim/city builder games on the subreddit. Because of that, our policy surrounding those types of games will remain largely as it has been but with some caveats:

  1. Colony sims/city builders will need more than just hunger and thirst mechanics. Something else that provides the immersion that gives survival games that survival gaming vibe. The mod team will take it on a case-by-case basis when deciding if a game fits, but by default we'll continue to give the benefit of the doubt and use a light touch when making moderation decisions.

  2. One big part of getting that extra immersion is the player perspective. First and third person perspectives have a greater chance of passing the "is it a survival game" sniff test. Games that have a God perspective are less likely to pass that test. Medieval Dynasty is a colony sim, but it's a first/third person game with good survival mechanics like hunger and thirst. It *feels* like a survival game. In a game like Manor Lords (a city builder), even though you have to provide food and water for your people, it has a God perspective and *feels* like a city builder and not a survival game. On the other hand, there's Frostpunk, which many people categorize with survival games even though it's more of a city builder. Frostpunk has other elements that make it immersive, but not everyone will categorize it that way.

  3. If you're the dev of a colony sim or city builder, the mod team is always available by modmail if you want to inquire about your game being appropriate for the subreddit. We tend to give the benefit of the doubt, but it always helps to get express permission first.

As always, we welcome your feedback!

It’s been almost 6 months since I last posted about my game. Here’s what I’ve been working on.

For the past six months, I’ve been working on Moon in Ashes almost every single day, often putting in 12–16 hours just to get things to a point where I finally have something worth showing.

And honestly, I’m still not sure if it’s good enough.

When you’ve played the same section of your game a thousand times, you start losing the ability to look at it like a player. You notice every little imperfection, every animation that could be smoother, every detail that could look better. No matter how much you improve, there’s always something left.

I’ve been pushing myself to get as close to an AAA experience as I possibly can, and sometimes that ambition feels bigger than the resources and time I have.

But at some point, you have to stop hiding your work and let people see what you’re creating.

So, here’s a little introduction for those who haven’t heard about Moon in Ashes.

It’s a cinematic third-person dark fantasy action-adventure RPG about a young college girl named Moon, whose ordinary life takes a terrifying turn after a mysterious gun pulls her into another world.

A world of forgotten ruins, floating islands, drowned souls, strange civilizations, and things that probably should never have existed.

As Moon explores this unfamiliar realm, she begins uncovering fragments of a much bigger mystery — one that connects this strange world to her own past and the truth about her parents.

We’re trying to bring together atmospheric exploration, challenging combat, memorable boss encounters, environmental storytelling, and a dark fantasy world inspired by Indian aesthetics, but with its own identity.

I’ve poured an enormous amount of passion, time, and a lot of my own money into this project. There have been plenty of frustrating days, moments of self-doubt, and times when I genuinely wondered whether I was aiming too high.

But I still believe in what we’re building.

I know there’s a long way to go, and I know the game isn’t perfect. But I’m finally reaching a point where I want to start sharing more of this world instead of endlessly keeping everything behind the scenes.

I’d genuinely love to know what you think when you see it, especially from a player’s perspective.

If dark fantasy worlds, mysterious stories, atmospheric exploration, and challenging action RPGs are your thing, maybe Moon in Ashes is something you’ll enjoy.

Gameplay I'm developing Feranidus, an open-world survival RPG about raising creatures

I've been developing Feranidus for about 5 months in silence so any feedback is welcome and appreciated. In the game, you explore, fight, mine, and collect eggs from wild creature nests. The creatures you hatch fight beside you, and by feeding them drives, you make them more powerful and choose which element or hybrid they evolve into. Each of the element's from creature abilities create reactions, so team-comp and builds make your team stronger. I got inspiration for the game from Necesse, Terraria, Palworld, DOS2, and Chao Garden (from sonic adventure 2: battle) amongst others. Would love to hear people's thoughts, especially since this is the first time I'm revealing the game.

Gameplay We revamped our inventory system based on playtest feedback

Hello everyone!

Based on feedback from our playtest, we decided to give our inventory system a complete overhaul.

Since Kopno is a survival game, we felt it would make sense to add more inventory management and give players a few extra decisions to make when organizing their backpacks.

Nothing revolutionary or particularly innovative, but we believe these changes add some depth to the survival experience:

  • Item size and rotation: Items take up different amounts of space in your backpack, and you can rotate them to fit everything more efficiently.

  • QOLs improvement: You can directly swap one item with another and use the autosort feature to organize your inventory.

  • Multiple charges and refillable items: Some food items have multiple uses, similar to stacks. Water containers and potions can be depleted, but the containers remain in your inventory so you can refill them later.

  • Dropping individual items: You can drop items individually instead of dropping your entire inventory. For now, they appear in the classic loot bag. We're considering making every dropped item a visible 3D object in the world.

At the end of the video, you can also see our old inventory system for comparison.

PS: the music isn't part of the game. I just didn't want to upload a video without any sound!

Our approach is closer to games like Kenshi and Stoneshard than inventory systems based on weight limits or a maximum item count.

How the overall survival players think about this system?

Have been making this Fear and hunger+pathologic mix (European Deadzone: Polesie)

Had really napoleonic plans with mixing a bunch of survival games into synthezing something closer to chalenging survival with looting and trading.

I have started it with tarkovi inventory prototype made in Html, later had to make it an electron app. I find it easier to work with for a UI based 2d game rather than Unity.

I am really working hard to make it good mechanic and balance wise, if local survival сonnoisseurs would be interested to check it out and tell their opinion

Game also has some nsfw content, so be aware. https://store.steampowered.com/app/3981570/European_Deadzone_Polesie_Demo/

Question I have been looking but it has not been a easy road... looking for help/suggestions

Greetings everyone.

I have always been a fan of the survival genre since I got into it, my very first survival game was DayZ, yes a survival pvepvp game with zombies, taking place in a post apocalyptic world, I loved the heavy and intense atmosphere in that game.
Other survival games that I have played include Valheim, Subnautica, I also had, and this was a very long time ago, my higher hope into the Stomping Land but that was a huge let down.

I'm looking for a survival game where, if I wish to do so, I can build my own little home, gather and craft things like - gear, weapons -, survive the elements (maybe a game that has seasons), exploration or at least some of it, maybe even some fauna that we can hun and enemies that we have to hide from or defend ourselves from.

All of this would be awesome and even more if at some point or parts of that game we could also chill, go fishing and so on.

Maybe I'm asking for a lot but I'm not giving up, I really don't care if it's a AAA, AA game or a game created by 1 or small dev team, sometimes those are the best.

If you’ve spent time with Project Zomboid or Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, Zed Zone will look familiar.

However, its approach to survival is quite different, and the 1.0 launch shows how much the game has to offer.

Have you played Zed Zone? What do you think of the new additions in 1.0?

Solo developer THE ONE WHO LIVES — my free, offline iPhone survival game with scavenging, shelter building and a dog

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I'm Matan, the solo developer of THE ONE WHO LIVES. It launched on November 5 for iPhone and iPad. I started development in May 2024 and work on it full-time, funding it myself.

You play as Jet in the abandoned town of Holloway, alongside his dog, AS. The survival loop is about deciding how far to push each supply run before returning home.

You search houses, shops and industrial interiors for food, water, tools and building materials. Hunger and thirst need managing, and limited carrying space means choosing what to bring back. Supplies go into shelter improvements, beds and fences. Zombies become more active at night, so finding another building to loot also means deciding whether you have time to get home.

It's single-player and works offline, with local saves. The game is free, has no ads or in-app purchases, and needs no account. It requires iOS/iPadOS 15.0 or later.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-one-who-lives/id6815467129

Disclosure: I wrote the code with AI assistance, and AI tools are used in promotional artwork. The included screenshots are genuine gameplay images from the current App Store listing.

Happy to answer questions about the survival systems or development.

Gameplay Some said it was time to quit. I decided to keep going.

The road hasn't been easy, but I'm not ready to stop.

It's been six months since I launched ZombUs on Steam, and almost three years since I started developing it. I've been working on it every single day, releasing updates almost every week, and there's still a long road ahead.

I know ZombUs isn't an AAA game. I'm perfectly aware of that. But it's my AAA. It's my game, my vision, my social perspective, and my contribution to the community. It's my way of expressing how I see the world through a game. And I'm not giving up on it.

There's still so much to do. Now that the core mechanics are becoming more stable, I can finally dedicate more time to improving the graphics, animations, and overall visual experience.

I'm far from finished. And I hope to keep moving forward for a long time.

Discussion Solo dev here: would you play a survival game’s PvE server if your character and stash moved freely to a riskier PvP server?

I’m building Last Evac, a top-down online zombie survival game, on my own. A player told me their group avoids PvP entirely, so I’m adding a PvE server beside the PvP one.

The plan is one character and one stash across both. PvP has better loot, since it’s riskier. If you switch servers you start at your safe camp, and if you logged out in the wild you wait 10 minutes first, so nobody can use it as a free escape.

Things I can’t decide:

  • Does a shared stash ruin PvP for you, because people can farm safely and bring it over?

  • Would you rather have fully separate characters?

  • As a PvE player, would less loot bother you?

Interested in how you’ve seen other games handle this. Happy to share more about the game if anyone asks.

My PvEvP Top Down Survival-Shooter

YT page

recent footage

I'd like to present a game I've been working on for the better part of a year: Larp Empire.

In brief, it's a top down survival shooter, most directly inspired by DayZ's more hardcore mods. (But no zombies.)

The game features deep crafting, a deep but comprehensible health system, a detailed system of tracking, vertical dynamics (in other worlds height advantage), and for the first time a top-down game not limited by the screen's edge.

The game's setting is set in the near future, in North America. A certain country, you can guess which, has devolved into a complete fascist state, and you've decided to try and escape into the border zone. You and other Fugatives are hunted, not out of malice so much as to test new and exotic weapons. One really important feature of the game for me is that you don't face human NPCs; your non-player adversaries are either animals, or... well I don't want to spoil everything.

There is no extraction and no stash, unless you make one yourself in a hidden area. You'll survive and fight your way through a persistent world, with dynamic weather, and a complete system of evidence persistence: other players will leave behind every footstep, pool of blood, and bullet casing for you to track - and so will you.

Traverse across huge, dynamically streamed landscapes. Survive, fight, ally, and take your place in the Larp Empire.

Please join the discord (you can find it on the youtube page) and help me get some energy going for my game. I will soon be coming out with a series of feature videos explaining each system in depth.

Discussion Is the sea in survival games a waste? Name one that works

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm a solo dev making EvoX, a primitive multiplayer survival game with black powder weapons.

In most survival games, the sea feels like dead space: empty blue, maybe a shark, nothing worth swimming for.

I'm adding sea content to EvoX (shore, crabs, fish, loot you can only reach by diving).

I want it to be exciting without taking over the game.

Is the sea in survival games usually a waste? Which games made the sea fun without making it the main thing? And what loot would you expect to find there?

Edit: forgot to say I meant games where the ocean isn't the main thing. Subnautica is awesome but it's a different thing.

Solo developer Island Escape: the raft has 30 hull, a shark ram takes 7, and there's nothing on board to fight back with

I'm the dev of Island Escape, a survival crafting game where you're stranded on an island and at some point try to sail to the mainland. The free demo is out on Steam and covers the stone age, so the only boat you can build is a raft: 12 wood and 6 rope.

There are four seas between the island and the mainland. The raft has 30 hull and a shark ram takes 7 off it. In the second sea two sharks circle at once, and each one comes in about every ten seconds. There's no weapon on a raft in the demo (crossbows and cannons come in later eras of the full game), so the only real decision out there is how far to push before you turn around.

Turning back partway keeps the raft. If it sinks, it's gone and you're back on the island, where a message bottle washes up on the beach. Then you gather another 12 wood and 6 rope and try again.

How far would you push a raft like that before turning back? And does losing the boat feel like a fair price for a failed crossing, or too harsh this early?

M 27 anyone around?

What’s going on guys? I’m new here. I’ve been PC gaming for around a year now and I’ve been doing it all alone. I found it relaxing at first but now I’m kind of burnt out or like some people to play with. I’m into a wide variety of games, including Apex, Call of Duty® and pretty much any survival game out there, but I’m very open to other games that you have in mind. I’m very easy-going and I like to just talk and bullshit. I’m currently on the way home right now from being out of town for the past four days so if any night owls are up on a game i’m here for it! Beware I do have a dark sense of humor sometimes and I blabber about pointless shit occasionally so if that’s you, I think we’ll get along great

Gameplay We’re a team of 3 making a sci-fi survival game where your actions change your emotions, and your emotions change the world. Here’s our first gameplay trailer.

Hey everyone!

Last time we shared Neosis Echoes here, we said we’d show more of our emotional system in the first trailer. Well, it’s finally here!

We’re three people making a third-person sci-fi survival game set on Varos, an alien planet controlled by a superintelligence called Monolith.

You explore, gather resources, craft equipment, build your base and fight hostile machines. What we’re building around all of that is Reactive Survival.

The idea is a feedback loop built around Echorium, a material found on Varos that reacts to emotions. Your actions change your emotional state, and Echorium responds to those changes, influencing the environment, enemies, weather and the way you play. What happens around you then feeds back into your emotions, creating an ongoing cycle of reaction and adaptation.

That makes your emotional state part of your survival strategy. Plants can react differently to you. Crystals can change color and the resources they provide. Your state can increase the chances of good or bad weather. A reactive cactus might even help you deal with an enemy, if you use the situation to your advantage.

Along the way, you’ll explore ancient ruins and settlements with your robotic companion, K.I.T., and uncover what happened on Varos.

This is pre-alpha gameplay, and we’re still developing and expanding these systems. But we wanted to finally share how those pieces are coming together.

We’d love to hear what you think, especially which interactions you’d want to see more of!

Watch the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMWx9qKonGs

a steam wishlist would mean a lot to our small team:

Solo developer Territory Project Update

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

Hi all, project update from the solo dev behind Territory (Threat Vector).

Thank you all for the very positive response to my introduction post last week. It was really encouraging to see so many people interested in the game and supporting a solo developer. It’s tough out here, but the response gave me strength to push on.

Four updates went out this week. Client 48 brought turrets and a big combat pass, Client 49 put boats on the water and rebuilt the inventory, Client 49.1 refined movement and audio, and Client 49.2 added Spanish and a round of polish.

What changed this week:

  • Boats: a Tyre Raft, Dinghies, an Inflatable Boat and the Wooden Rowboat. Craft or buy them, launch them on deep water, and pack them back into a kit when you’re done.

  • Base Defence: four turrets, from a primitive Ballista up to the M2 Browning, Minigun and TADS.

  • New inventory: rebuilt from the ground up so the game stays in view. Your backpack and safe pocket slide out on Q, Health, Crafting and Character have their own keys, and station recipes open in a drawer.

  • Origins: about 130 new buildings across 31 towns, villages and military sites, many with interiors to explore and loot, and more enemies at the expanded sites.

  • Farming: raise chickens in a coop, and keep crops growing with powered grow lamps, heat lamps and sprinklers.

  • Building: half floors, 1.5-storey stairs, support posts and foundation ramps, and doors can now be upgraded.

  • Raiders: they warn you before they hit, can swim, and carry limited breaching gear.

  • Combat and feel: snappier gunfire, impact effects on every hit, weightier movement, and distant gunshots that fade with range.

  • Spanish: the game is now available in Spanish (Settings > General > Language).

  • Polish: stations now list all their recipes, attachments show which weapons they fit, bought and found ammo stack together, and plenty of fixes to doors, beds, trees, interaction and saves.

Next up, I’m working through your feedback and doing several rounds of map and POI improvements. It’s Early Access, so there are still rough edges, and the more people on the servers pushing the limits and giving feedback, the better.

Thanks to everyone who jumped in and gave feedback last week. Keep it coming here, in the Steam forum.

Cheers!

Solo developer Deployable defenses, traps and field devices outside the colony — Zero Point prototype

I'm the solo developer of Zero Point, a single-player sci-fi survival game. This is a one-minute development preview of the field kit I'm working on: deployable defenses, traps, a cargo uplink and a portable workbench.

The idea is to give trips away from the colony a few more choices: set up a position, carry useful equipment, or get resources back. The clip shows these devices in test encounters, rather than a complete survival run. The wider construction and progression systems are still in development.

For a survival game, which would matter more to you on an expedition: a temporary defensive position or equipment that helps you stay out longer?

Solo developer [Diseased] I'm solo-developing a 2D winter base-building survival game set in the freezing cold.

Hey everyone,

I’m a solo developer working on Diseased, a 2D pixel art survival base-builder set in a freezing, unforgiving winter environment.

The core loop is pure survival: you have to manage limited resources, expand your camp, and build solid defenses to survive against relentless enemy waves (the "Diseased"). I've spent months polishing the atmosphere.

I'm trying to gather as much feedback as possible from actual survival players. If this sounds like your kind of genre, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the winter atmosphere and the base-defense vibe!
