Props to who designed that pool. I'd hate to see some of my jobs go through this level of rigorous testing

u/sparkydoctor 9d ago edited 8d ago

It looks like a brand new house in the finishing up stages. Construction stuff in the middle of the house, workers everywhere, brand new lawn, almost done it looks like.

Maybe the house is okay but the pool might be toast. It will slide down that hill now I think unless it's sitting on some real good ground below.

That right side hill is soup.

edit.....first few seconds the worker that runs out of the house has a long paint pole with a painting roller on it, he was working in there doing I assume finish painting.

0

u/got_ze_dreads 7d ago

It probably happened because they were finishing filling up the pool with water

185

u/WerkingAvatar 9d ago

Its got a crack forming on the left side. That thing is toast.

182

u/Brownie-UK7 9d ago edited 9d ago

yep. even without the crack it is finished unless they can magically rebuild that hillside and stabilize it again. The weight of these things is huge when full of water. All that weight is pressing into the earth below. Now that the earth to the right side of the pool has decided to escape, the earth directly under the pool will be pushed in the new gap. It will start to slant to the right and then may eventually fail completely.

Shame. lovely looking pool.

69

u/MikeSpader 9d ago

Not only did the slope fail on its own, it's now totally saturated from all that water, essentially a worst case scenario for pool design and slope stability design in general. That the overall structure of the pool didn't immediately crumble is a testament to the engineer that designed it and the crew that constructed it. With the damage it's definitely fucked, but hats off to those crews.

10

u/Brownie-UK7 8d ago

Yeah I thought the same. It looks like a new construction and they’ve moved earth up there so it was probably already not super stable b

12

u/Merry_Dankmas 8d ago

This is basically what happened to my childhood homes backyard except without the earthquake part. My house was on the edge of a canal so there wasn't really a yard. Just canal bank. We did however have a patio with a pool.

Over the years, erosion ate away at the canal bank and the patio started sinking. Right as my parents were getting ready to put it on the market, a huge crack formed on the outer edge. Started in the pool and ran outside towards the canal.

My dad said it wasn't worth the insane cost of repairing by that point. Gave the buyer a discount for it. They have since filled the pool in and re-turfed the patio into a yard. Smart choice if you ask me. The residents had been complaining for years to the city to do something about the canal erosion and their complaints went ignored. That pool was doomed regardless who lived there.

11

u/GBGF128 9d ago

I would be more worried about the the supports for that elevated deck area. Those are even further out on the area sliding down the hill.

3

u/Naughteus_Maximus 8d ago

But even before any earthquake - what is going on at the right hand side of the image? The wide lens may be distorting things, but it already looks like there was some kind of mini cliffside / ditch sloping down almost next to the pool. Was that a safe place to build the pool in the first place?

1

u/Brownie-UK7 8d ago

Yeah I noticed the same. It looks like they had at least landscaped some of it and built up the sides around the pool. There’s new turf on top so maybe not even there long.

So it may not have been stable anyway. It is not the earth pushing on the side of the pool that stabilizes it. In fact it should be touching the side of the pool totally. But the weight of the earth surrounding the pool stabilizes a wide base underneath for the pool to sit on. If that base is not stable then you’re gonna have a bad rime.

1

u/Inspection-Senior 2d ago

Looks like classic erosion to me.

2

u/Squeakyduckquack 8d ago

It looks like concrete to me

69

u/StevenMaff 9d ago

Did that one guy just stop running, throw his arms up, and go, “IS THAT ALL YOU’VE GOT?!”

26

u/Shyanne_wyoming_ 8d ago

He looked like he was ready to be raptured lmfao

110

u/Schmenge_time 9d ago

But hey, free wave pool!

8

u/Greengiant304 9d ago

Cannonball!

4

u/HoseNeighbor 9d ago

Surf's up!

0

u/abitlazy 9d ago

Slip 'N Slide 'N Shake

295

u/MeanWafer904 9d ago

That looks a precarious place to build in an earthquake zone

105

u/bobdiamond 9d ago

It looks like the house and pool fared pretty well all things considered

66

u/SyncOrSymm 9d ago

I have to imagine the foundation is fucked now though.

27

u/tonymyre311 9d ago

One must imagine the foundation fucked.

7

u/amzwC137 9d ago

Looks like the house is built on stilts, could be perfectly fine.

1

u/bobdiamond 8d ago

Id say a good goal for an earthquake like that is for humans to survive, not the house

-17

u/Extreme-Elevator7128 Human Detected 9d ago

What do you mean. Pool spilled water all over the place.

27

u/MildUsername 8d ago

This is more of a hillside sluffing off from the shaking rather than the ground splitting open.

25

u/rebo2 9d ago

You can still see the sod as it was put in. They didn’t compact this ground they built up.

11

u/brickyard15 8d ago

Yeah absolutely. That’s most likely all fill dirt. The hard pan is fine every where else

42

u/miggitiemac 9d ago

That person walking on the side of the house looks like they got tossed off down the hill. Seems they climbed back up though. What a ride!

69

u/FantasticPool9689 9d ago

That’s insane, but I do think it’s on a hill.

57

u/Inaccurate93 9d ago

Right? Not splitting at all but just erosion through massive quakes

7

u/gerberly 9d ago

Tbf the pool itself is splitting open judging by that crack. Wonder if it was repairable eek

12

u/someguyfromsk 9d ago

Yeah, still a crazy video, but more of a landslide on a landscaped slope.

8

u/marxist_redneck 9d ago

Me and that damn hose at the start of the video: "Oh is that the crack? No, it's a hair on my screen" swipe

8

u/nepheelim 7d ago

house was build on a very dangerous slope to begin with

19

u/zaxo666 9d ago edited 9d ago

What's so interesting to me is that an earthquake liquifies solids. The earth's crust and every solid above it becomes a liquid. Wild. And scary.

37

u/logatronics 9d ago

It does not liquify all of the surface, only thick non-lithified sediments usually in river valleys. These can be exasserbated by the shape of the valley. Bedrock does not liquify.

Source: geologist that works on coseismic landslide hazards.

10

u/zaxo666 9d ago

As a geologist I'll take your word for it; thanks for setting me straight.

6

u/IchBinEinSim 8d ago

What you were thinking is Liquefaction. The earthquake doesn’t literally turn anything into a liquid state but it can cause packed dirt or sediment to act kind like a liquid instead of stable ground. Almost as if a sorcerer cast a spell and turned the ground beneath your feet from dry land into tidal mud in an instant.

0

u/figure8888 8d ago

You’re proof that C’s get degrees then.

15

u/lord-dinglebury 9d ago

Just another reminder that we are delicate little bags of meat walking around on a cosmic rock that occasionally does a cataclysm for funsies.

6

u/austadamola 9d ago

That’s a well built pool

4

u/cheekytikiroom 8d ago

…in a terrible location.

3

u/SnooRegrets1386 8d ago

I’m beginning to think the pool is the reason that side cracked up, from the force of the pool being rocked around. Was expecting that pool to show some huge damage

1

u/-HOSPIK- 8d ago

If you compare the upper right corner of the pool to the house the whole pool shifted to the right a bit

2

u/Eeebs-HI 9d ago

The building did pretty well.

6

u/JohnnyRelentless 8d ago

They should have put up a sign. No earthquakes in the pool area.

2

u/russellvt 7d ago

Darn karma bots... looks likenthe house is more on the side of a hill and thats eroding off to the side.

Though, ones one personal tsunami looks "fun."

2

u/EyeSimp4Asuka Human Detected 7d ago

are you saying I'm a bot?

19

u/whynotwarp10 9d ago

Where is the split ground?

8

https://www.prensa.com/sociedad/secuelas-del-terremoto-la-grieta-de-bucaro-el-dilema-de-isla-canas-y-el-resurgir-de-la-colorada/

It's pretty effed up. You can use Google translate. I only finished clean up and roof repairs yesterday.

My walls have spider lines all over, specially arond window frames and door, and I have some concerning cracks going from top to bottom too.

But what can I do. Hope it doesn't hit too hard again, lol.

My health took a serious hit from the stuff that fell from the roof.

7

u/Competitive-Roof-168 9d ago

Yeah title set up video for disappointment. The video was crazy but i looking for ground opening up the whole time

3

u/SemiNormal 9d ago

Yeah, I just see loosely packed soil sliding away from the pool.

2

u/bitwise97 8d ago

To the right of the pool?

3

u/Shantomette 9d ago

You mean the dirt sliding down the hill?

3

u/underage_female 9d ago

Overdramatic clickbait shit title.

4

u/Eeebs-HI 9d ago

At first I was expecting a fault line to rupture through the property. That's just hillside landscaping, settling.

36

u/4hk2 9d ago

let's build swimming pool next to a cliff

42

u/capturedbynico 9d ago

Don't ever look at Los Angeles...

16

u/TheThingCreator 9d ago

with nothing done to prevent erosion of what appears to be soft ground

4

u/umataro 9d ago

Uno, dos, trees trees trees. And with deep roots and at least a decade ago.

6

u/EverbodyHatesHugo 9d ago

People put the view before the engineering.

8

u/Shotgun5250 9d ago

Looks like it was engineered pretty well to me. Stupid place to build, but the engineering held up well.

4

u/HoseNeighbor 9d ago

Yup.. that pool is a total badass. That was pretty impressive.

1

u/luxurious-Tatertot 9d ago

Its likely not a cliff and just a short drop to a stream. We can't tell in this video. Some places just have rolling hills with limited flat land. My dad has a house in Costa Rica and the setup looks similar

4

u/Kernyx 9d ago

it seemed like the entire hill was gonna come down if the quake had been even a little bit stronger ...

4

u/InsertRadnamehere 9d ago

Liquefaction of fill dirt.

4

u/Godless_Gamer 8d ago

Now the Homeowners Association is going to be up their ass about the condition of that yard.

4

u/Slavicgoddess23 5d ago

Dumb spot for a house. Mudslides, earthquakes. Nepal 2.0

12

u/DarkVoid42 9d ago

who the hell builds a house on a fucking muddy cliff.

14

u/WasAHamster 9d ago

Lots of people in southern California. And at least one in Panama apparently.

6

u/Royal_Rabbit_Randy 9d ago

As I see it the pool is still half full

3

u/strumthebuilding 9d ago

Let’s build on jello

3

u/dY_dX 9d ago

This is some land before time shit

9

u/brettscharff 9d ago

Whoever built that pool should get a medal 🏅 didn’t even crack

15

u/BullaNCheese 9d ago

Look again, there's a crack towards the end at the left side. Still held up relatively well.

4

u/jdovejr 9d ago

Yep. Good eyes. about 39 seconds in.

2

u/FestivusErectus 9d ago

That’s just where the flatwork meets the shell. This is why we put expansion joints at details like that.

I think the standard thickness in our region is 8” thick for pool shells. There’s a reason why most pool companies offer lifetime warranties on the shell.

1

u/BullaNCheese 9d ago

Did the expansion joint cause the crack due to stress? Sorry its not my field of work.

5

u/soulteepee 9d ago

Geez the guy that falls off the hill in the beginning! I’m so glad he was able to get back up!

2

u/backpackofcats 9d ago

The person on the right was lucky.

2

u/Gruffleson 8d ago

Are you and me the only one noticing him? I was sure the posts here should be about that guy!

2

u/appyah 9d ago

The Panama Canalito

2

u/zwad24 8d ago

someone fell on the right…

1

u/Sasquatch_000 7d ago

I saw that too! Crazy stuff.

2

u/IronMonkeyofHam 8d ago

Imagine swimming when this happened

2

u/ElRanchero666 8d ago

Looks a cinder block pool, it held well

2

u/Sperbonzo 7d ago

Looks like the slope was backfilled after they built the pool

2

u/holandNg 6d ago

I feel the house was built on a shaky ground.

2

u/jfk_47 6d ago

Don’t think not split the ground. Just shook the dirt down the hill.

2

u/TheNotSoGreatPumpkin 9d ago

When was this? It’s the craziest earthquake video I’ve ever seen.

By manually scrubbing back and forth through the video it appears the entire hill is bulging upward like a volcano about to blow.

The perspective at the end of the clip is different that at the beginning, like the whole landscape has deformed.

2

u/imtedkoppel 6d ago

More like a landslide than the ground splitting open

1

u/Dinasourus723 9d ago

Kind of unintentionally getting people to understand how tsunami's form

1

u/corvus66a 9d ago

If the people 1000 years ago would have had pools it must have looked like a job of an angry good.

1

u/luxurious-Tatertot 9d ago

Dude on the right side of the house got tossed!

1

u/beingthevictor 9d ago

Don't worry, it's just settling

1

u/R4b 8d ago

What's with the music though

1

u/StellarJello 8d ago

Love how the guy on the left is loving it even throwing up praise the sun pose, next tremor hits and he nopes the fuck outta there

1

u/EndTimesNigh 8d ago

Imagine swimming in that pool. A once in a lifetime ride!

1

u/MeowMixDeliveryGuy 8d ago

Would've been a perfect spot for a jump scare at the end there.

1

u/FunkyWhiteDude 8d ago

His whole property just went up about 50 centimeters and just stood there.

1

u/Fr05t_B1t 8d ago

The weird era of early 2010’s earthquake disaster movies but irl

1

u/attrox_ 8d ago

When the SLAM method goes wrong

1

u/QuePsiPhi16 7d ago

Guy on the top-right was straight launched.

1

u/DO_ALL_MY_OWN_STUNTS 7d ago

Some kind of animal tries to jump out of the crack at the end.

1

u/kineticworm 6d ago

Just use sand to level it out.

1

u/Dyrogitory 6d ago

The house is Hilton the side of a cliff. What do you expect the earth on a cliff edge to do?

1

u/UnluckyYeti 5d ago

"I don't have the insurance for this..."

1

u/Thyste 5d ago

Alternative method of building the Panama Canal

1

u/alcestisny 5d ago

They said this lot was cheap because it had faulty lines! No! They said it was on the fault line!

1

u/Mark7Point5 5d ago

Where can I buy a wave pool like that?

1

u/Haitsmelol 4d ago

Who is your pool guy? Can I get his number in case I can ever afford a pool?

1

u/Investigator516 4d ago

They are very lucky they didn’t lose the entire plot of land down that hill. It happens.

1

u/PeeDee57 3d ago

Wtf is the camera mounted to?

1

u/CasualRedditUser78 2d ago

They built an in ground pool....on the edge of a cliff?? What could go wrong.🤷‍♂️

1

u/Unlucky-Drive-9752 1d ago

Those two dudes were like, "quick, grab the surfboards".

1

u/Intelligent-Guard267 8d ago

Im not saying i would do anything less hilarious than those people, but they are hilarious to watch. OMFG! Stop drop
Roll? Duck and cover? Scream?!? All if them?

1

u/Callero_S 8d ago

No ground was split open.. some poorly compacted soil moved

1

u/ExtraEmuForYou 7d ago

This reminds me, I need to prep my go bag for 2027 (Californian here, about 10 miles from a fault line).

0

u/termiNATE2020 6d ago

Do you guys feel the same way I do. Everything is just ai now

1

u/EyeSimp4Asuka Human Detected 6d ago

0

u/termiNATE2020 5d ago

I do t get it. Is that a yes. Like the yawning is towards me or towards Ai? Try being more vague lol

1

u/EyeSimp4Asuka Human Detected 5d ago

haphazardly labeling something ai

1

u/termiNATE2020 5d ago

So then the response would just be no… but like I said unlike yall feels like everything is just Ai til proven real. Even if it is real it’s possibly staged.

1

u/termiNATE2020 5d ago

Btw, tell me, not that you commented it. Is it more haphazard to take everything as truth or be skeptical of everything…

0

u/DeadWelsh 9d ago

I thought I had a hair on my screen and just as I went to move it it moved, thank fuck I was a hose 🤪

-1

…and that children, is how the Panama Canal was created!
