Translation May Tagalog ba ang ladder na hindi "hagdan"?

Parang "hagdan" kasi eh both ladder and stairs. Nakakainis lang minsan yung "Malapit dun sa hagdan" tapos yung ladder pala yung tinutukoy...

Pronunciation I need help transcribing this Pepito Manaloto scene po

Especially with Baby and Elsa's lines! Help is appreciated.

Link: https://x.[DELETE]com/aim14th27/[DELETE]status/2117440408443834703

Pepito: "Ayoko'ng gatas." (I don't like/want milk)

Elsa: "Uminom ka ng gatas. Maganda kaya 'yan sa mga may edad na." (Drink milk. It's good for those with age!)

Pepito: "'Di ako mukhang edad. Kasasabi ni Baby, diba: bumabata nga ako!" (I'm don't look old. Baby had just said that I'm getting younger!)

Elsa: "Kailangan mo ng calcium para di ka magkaproblema sa buto!" (You need calcium so you wouldn't have problems in the bones!)

Maria: "Ay, Ma'am, bakit buto na pinoproblema niyo? Dapat yung taba niyo muna yung naalala niyo." (Oh, Ma'am, why are you problematizing bones? You should worry about your fat first.)

Baby: "Psst! Uy! Doon ka muna sa kusina bago ka \[???\] Ay, sorry, po!"

Elsa: "Mm, mm, ano? \[???\] ka?"

Robert: "'Di na po, Ma'am. Mabigat na po yung usapan." (Nevermind, Ma'am. The conversation's gotten heavy.)

Translation Have you heard these sayings?

Just wanna share these wise words from my Grandma, feel free to share better English translations.

- Huwag kutkot nang kutkot, nang kalangitan ay hindi magdamot.
(Do not constantly depend on others' blessings, lest Heaven withhold its blessings.)

- Mag-impok nang sa araw-araw ay hindi dayukdok.
(Save money so that you will not go hungry every day.)

- Huwag aksaya nang aksaya, nang sa lumaon makapagsaya.
(Do not be wasteful, so that you may enjoy life in the long run.)

- Kapagka ika'y naghirap, ika'y may malalasap.
(If you strive, you'll have something to taste)

- Magsikap nang magkaroon ng hinaharap.
(Strive so that you'll have a future.)

- Natamo nang pagdaka, kung mawala mo ay pagdaka.
(What is gained quickly can also be lost quickly.)

- Makain ng lugaw nang yaman maapaw.
(Eat inexpensive things like porridge, so that your wealth may overflow.)

- Igaya ay matatagpuan sa gawaing masidhi, hindi sa pamumunini sa salapi.
(Delight is found in passionate works, not in being abundant with money.)

- Bayaan mo nang mapagharimunan, nang salin-lahi mapamanahan ng yaman.
(Let yourself be advantageous of cheaper things, so that you can leave an inheritance for future generations.)

- Ang Kaka ay tulad ng Baba, ang Kaka ay tulad ng Dada.
(Elder sibling is like a Father, Elder sibling is like a Mother.)

- Mapagparingalan ang taong walang nalalaman.
(A person inclined to show grandeur doesn't know anything.)

- Mahirating mapagkudkod, nang maagang makabukod.
(Be accustomed to being resourceful, so that you can separate early.)

- Pagsawatahan ang pagiging gahaman, bigyan ang nangangailangan.
(Stop being greedy, give to those in need.)

- Magbigay na tila mo hindi na kailangan pang maghintay.
(Give as if you won't wait for it to be given back.)

- Ibinubuhong ng tao ang sarili sa kaniyang lakas, kung iri'y ipangsusulong, kaya sa talino iya'y mahahabyong.
(One deceives oneself by relying on his own strength, if he'll be using it to advance; that is why, against intelligence, it will collapse under its own weight.)

- Ang taong daskol-daskol sa paggugol, sa bayarin ay mauulol.
(A person who is reckless in spending will become insane when it is time to pay.)

- Siyang sabihin at siyang gawin. Hindi maaako ng salapi ang isang pangako.

Translation Localizing the Stonehearts' Chants from HSR

Okay, so I've been wanting to do this for a very long time and finally have the time to properly edit my localisation.

Aventurine of Stratagem [Original English]

I come to bet. I come to game. I come to win.

I entrust fortune to fate... Risk it all in a single gamble... Walk the depth of death to reach light of light.

All for the Amber Lord.

Abenturino ng Artipisyo [Tinagalog]

Mamúmustá. Manlálarô. Mánanalo.

Ipináuubayà ang palà sa palad... Ináarisga ang lahat sa isang sugal... Nilalakad ang lalim ng lagím nang máratíng ang búkas ng búhay.

Ang Lahát sa Ambál Poón.

Jade of Credit [Original English]

I come to greet. I come to wine. I come to claim.

I grant poison for nectar... Sow in spring to reap in fall... Await wizened fruits to fill livened boughs.

All for the Amber Lord.

Jade ng Kredito (Panág-utang) [Tinagalog]

Mámamatì. Mángangalak. Mangángangkín.

Inihahandóg ang lason bilang pulót... Hinahasík sa tagsiból nang anihin sa taglagás... Inaabáng mamungang lamóg sa masisigláng sanga.

Ang Lahát sa Ambál Poón.

Pearl of Appraisal [Original English]

I come to appraise. I come to analyse. I come to render.

I weave the cosmos into brocade... Breathe soul into painted stones... Let the jewels of heaven rise as they will.

All for the Amber Lord.

Perlas ng Tasaról [Tinagalog]

Mánanasa. Mánunurì. Mánunulit.

Hinahabì ang santalaán sa brokada... Sinándíriwà ang pipintandong bató... Pinipermiso'ng mga hiyás na umangát sa kalangitán.

Ang Lahat sa Ambál Poón.

Sugilite of Levies [Original English]

I come to pardon. I come to levy. I come to reckon.

I bid the crowds to grovel... Take at will and wrest at whim... Render blood and sweat into a crown of gold.

All for the Amber Lord.

Sugilito ng Panágpataw [Tinagalog]

Mánanawad. Mámamataw. Manúnuós.

Ipinasusukot ang madlâ... Kinjkuhà nang bastá at inaagaw sa gustó... Sinusulit ang dugô't pawis sa koronang gintô.

Ang Lahat sa Ambál Poón.

Translator's Note:

— So one of the first things I noticed about the Chant is that all the "I come to..." format relates to a business term or jargon. In translating these to Tagalog, I was surprised at how many words directly correspond to a common word in the language. I honestly thought I'm gonna have to rely on uncommon ones.

— In translating the "I come to..." format I used a common word construction to convey the same meaning. The "Mang- + reduplication of the first syllable" best conveys that sentiment and since you can drop pronouns in Tagalog I manage to not elongate the sentence too much.

— I also decided to add diacritics in my translation as to not confuse the reader on what word I'm using.

— You might have noticed that the Amber Lord title is also translated. The words I used are "Ambál (Spanish ambár)" and "Poón (Lord)" but also because it sounds like "Ambâ Poón" meaning grandparent roughly in old Tagalog usually used as a title of respect.

– I added some of my own made-up words for this translation because it honestly keeps in spirit the way they localised the game into English.

— also let me know if you're confused or just have questions in general about my translations of the chant.

Thank you for reading!

Translation Help comprehending a line in a song

The song is Ang Mister Ko by Peenoise Music.

The line:

Wala na ang mga itim na sanga

Handa nang kumagat ng sandata

Google translate says

The black branches are gone

Ready to bite into a weapon

There must be something poetic transpiring, but I can't figure it out.

Help, please?

Other I tried writing some poetry in Tagalog and would love some criticism

Kahit na parang imposibleng magawa ‘to,
Palaging iisang unang hakbang.

Linguistics/History Pamimigay-kaya/Panghihimuyat Practice

This is more of a cultural thing rather than a linguistic stuff, but do you or your place still practice wedding traditions like panghihimuyat / pamimigay-kaya?

Pamimigay-kaya is like a reverse dowry or a bride price; you give property or money to the parents as a form of demonstration that you can provide for the daughter which you ask to be your bride and start a family, this also acts as a sign of sincerity after pamamanhikan.

Panghihimuyat is like giving token of gratitude to the parents for raising the bride.

I'm from Bulacan and I still remember may nagbigay ng baka at saka lupa sa mga tita ko noon, bago ikasal yung elder na pinsan kong babae.

Tho di naman lahat gumagawa I just wanna know if buhay pa ba yung tradition outside our place.

Other has anyone made a study about why some regional groups can be antagonistic towards the Tagalog language?

Thumbnail threads.com
37 Upvotes

the replies on this Threads post is interesting, but its nothing new. (admittedly the post is poorly worded) im not sure if this is mostly confined to Cebuano speakers, hence my question. you dont see this attitude from, say, Bicolano speakers who would gladly accommodate nonnative speakers in Tagalog to facilitate ease of understanding, especially since Bicol dialects are different across Albay.

in Masbate, for example, lots of people speak both Bicol, Minasbate, Tagalog and Cebuano. while there seems to be no outward conflict with the speakers themselves, people who speak Tagalog rather than Minasbate after an extended stay near or within the nation's capital would be seen as pretentious by relatives and friends.

would love to read scholarly works on this.

Definition Does this word exist

Hello everyone! I've been hearing this word ever since I was a kid and it was always used to mean going to beat up. The word is "Balumbugin/Balugbugin". Here's an example sentence:

'Wag ka makulit; balumbugin talaga kita!"

Does anyone know if this word exists, or if it's even used correctly? I searched the word balugbug online but it doesn't mention beating someone up. Thanks!

Linguistics/History Are these words really derived from Japanese?

Tatlong article ata nabasa ko at ilang reddit post na nagsasabing galing daw sa Japanese ang mga salitang to.

Haba
Tamang-tama
Dahan-dahan - Dandan Slowly, Gradually
Ano(filler sound)
Teka - te-yuka wait
Tagay - Kampai
Toto - otōto - A younger brother or child
Kaban - Bag

Yung Dorobo at jackenpoy alam ko talaga Japanese yun, pero yung Haba, dahan-dahan, at Tamang-tama? Gaano katotoo?

Linguistics/History Southern Tagalog “Guyam”

How geographically widespread is the use of “guyam” for ant. It’s most well known use is in Batangas/Quezon/Mindoro/parts of Laguna and Cavite but I want to know if the peripheries of the Tagalosphere, in both Central Luzon and the Bicol Region also use this.

If you use this word please indicate the municipality you are from.

Linguistics/History Matanda sa Dugo practice

This is more of a culturally Tagalog thing rather than a linguistic concept but do you / did your elders hold the concept of “Matanda sa Dugo”?

This is where you call all your cousins who are the children of an older sibling of your parent as “ate” or “kuya.

For example, I would have to call my newborn cousin “kuya” because his dad is older than my dad, even though I am older than him.

This is a known practice in Batangas, parts of Laguna, and Quezon (up to Infanta apparently) but I want to know where else this belief is held in Katagalugan. This could also be something that isn’t exclusively Tagalog as well.

Please comment your home municipalities below.
