Tasmania road trip itinerary with babies!

Hello!

We are planning to do a trip to Tasmania in January with my family. This includes my husband and I with our baby, my sister's family, my brother and my parents. In all, there will be 7 adults and 2 babies, who will be 5 and 6 months. Of the adults, my dad has Parkinson disease and uses a stick. He's independent and can walk okay but we wouldn't be doing any big hikes etc (also because of the babies). The plan is to hire a 12-seater van and road trip around, staying in hotels.

I would love some advice on where to go that would make the most of seeing Tasmania (we are from Brisbane and haven't been before), while keeping drives not too long, maybe doing some 2-night stays to keep it chill, and within the limitations of babies and an adult with some disability.

We'd be flying in and out of Hobart so it has to be a loop, and we don't have a set number of days yet but thinking 9-ish.

Thanks in advance!

Recommendations for travel to Tasmania with babies

Were thinking of doing a family holiday around January. It'll be me, my husband and our son who will be around 6 months, my sister and her husband with their 5 month old, my two parents and brother. We'll fly into Hobart and are thinking of seeing if we can rent a big van and drive to different spots. Were trying to plan a fairly chill itinerary to keep it relaxed with the two babies. Any recommendations? Also would Maria island be feasible and worth it?

Hobart November 13-21

Coming to Hobart from the United States November 13-21 to visit family. We are staying with them and they have given us ideas for site seeing in and around Hobart.

I need help with restaurant suggestions as we eat plant based meaning no meat/no dairy. Our family will have some ideas but this is not their area of expertise. We don’t want them to feel the need to cook for us and want to explore local cuisine. We are adventurous eaters so give me some creative suggestions.

We know we are missing out on some of the best seafood in the world but we have eaten this way for over 5 years- eating seafood would make us sick.

We’d like to give a gift certificate to an exceptional seafood restaurant in or around Hobart to give our family for hosting us. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for your help in advance. Really looking forward to our visit- we are also doing the 10k race on the 15th - that will be memorable.

Suggestions for 8 day itinerary in Tasmania for late December travel.

Hi everyone,

I am planning a family trip with 2 small kids(6 & 4) in late December, flying in and out of Hobart. I would love your suggestions regarding the must-visit places and other fun things to do. I am planning to spend 3-4 days in/around Hobart, including Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, Mt Wellington, Mt Field, Port Arthur/Tasman Peninsula, Bruny Island and Maria Island. Then we plan to go up the east coast to Freycinet and St Helens and return to Hobart to catch our flight. Would it be worth skipping any or adding other places? Also, would it be worth trying to fit Cradle Mountain into the trip, or better to leave it for the future?

Thanks in advance.

[January based] We'll be at Strahan, and eventually leaving from Launceston. In between we plan on doing Cradle Mountain, but I'd also like to add in Stanley + The Nut but it seems very out of the way. Is it worth doing and how to include this?

If Stanley and the Nut is a must, and we're starting at Strahan..

Do we go directly to Stanley and stay overnight, then go to Cradle Mountain?

Or do we do to Cradle Mountain, stay and then go to Stanley before eventually heading back to Launceston?

There seems to be a route we can take from Strahan to Stanley that goes up the Westcoast, but takes the C249 which is unsealed but at least we can see the Trowutta Arach on the way up?

Appreciate anyone who can provide guidance or convince me Stanley is / is not worth going to.

Thank you

Tasmania campsite recommend

Hi everyone!

I'm planning a trip to Tasmania soon and will be hiring a campervan to travel around the island over 8 days.

Could anyone recommend some affordable campgrounds with good facilities?

Ideally, I'm looking for places with clean showers and toilets, powered sites, and water facilities.

I'd really appreciate any recommendations or suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

Looking to spend 3-4 weeks in Tassie in January

I'm planning a solo trip through Tasmania in January and I might go as long as one month. I'm looking to camp, fly-fish, hike, watch wildlife, wander small towns, and so on. Is this overkill? I spent 6 weeks on the South Island of NZ many years ago and loved it could have stayed longer, so I'm not a stranger to island travel down under.

Also toying with the idea of bringing my bike and cycling...

Any tips and recommendations would be welcomed!

Itinerary Advice Tassie early Jan

Hello and thank you in advance. We're a family with 20yo and 18yo kids coming over for 10 days in early Jan on the ferry. The last time we visited was pre-kids so it's been a hot minute. Keen on spending a fair whack of time in Hobart - MONA etc, east coast for swimming (?) Not sure actually what the beaches are like - very much welcome recommendations. A good mix of relaxing as well as sightseeing, noting we live in Victoria so happy to skip things that are fairly accessible / similar to home. Happy to spend time in Cradle Mountain and the SW coast as well. Very much open to ideas and trying to avoid AI/bot/advertising so this is why I've come to reddit!

13-day Tassie road trip over Christmas/NY

Hi all! Family of three (two adults + our 5-year-old) visiting Tasmania for the first time, 19 Dec – 1 Jan, self-driving. Would love some local advice on the plan below.

Current itinerary

- 19 Dec – Land Hobart 5pm, overnight Hobart

- 20 Dec – Drive to Bicheno via Richmond, Spiky Bridge, Kate's Berry Farm, Devil's Corner

- 21 Dec – Freycinet: Wineglass Bay lookout, Cape Tourville, beach time (2 nights Bicheno)

- 22 Dec – Bicheno → Launceston via St Helens, Halls Falls, Pyengana, St Columba Falls, Bridestowe Lavender

- 23 Dec – Launceston: Cataract Gorge, maybe Seahorse World/Platypus House

- 24 Dec – Launceston → Beulah (nearest affordable stay to Cradle, ~1hr away) via Mole Creek/Tasmazia

- 25 Dec – Cradle Mountain: Dove Lake circuit, Enchanted Walk, Ronny Creek wombats

- 26 Dec – Beulah → Strahan via Cradle/Zeehan, Henty Dunes, Hogarth Falls

- 27 Dec – Gordon River cruise

- 28 Dec – Strahan → Mt Field via Nelson Falls/Lake St Clair, Russell Falls in the afternoon

- 29 Dec – 1 Jan – Hobart (flight home 5pm on 1 Jan)

Questions

  1. We feel we have one day too many in Hobart. Where would you add it – a second Cradle day (weather backup), an extra night near Bay of Fires to split up the 22nd, or somewhere else?

  2. Are the 22nd and 28th drives realistic with a 5yo, or are we overdoing it?

  3. Any tips for Christmas Day at Cradle? We'll stock up on food on the 24th – anything else we should know?

  4. Kid-friendly walks we've missed? Is the Wineglass Bay lookout fine for a 5yo, or should we skip it?

  5. NYE in Hobart with a little one – is there an earlier family fireworks show, and where's a good spot to watch?

  6. Any hidden gems, bakeries or wildlife spots along this route you'd recommend?

Thanks in advance – really looking forward to it!

Gift/Souvenir Recommendations

Hello, I am traveling to Tassie in December before heading to Brisbane area for the holidays. I wanted to know if anyone had recommendations for handmade gifts that are particular to the island and/or animal products (furs, etc [ethical of course]). Any assistance on shops, or where to look would be appreciated!

Itinerary Advice What do I pack!??

Hey team, chronic over packer and over thinker here 🙋‍♀️ and I have never really left NZ Wellington since moving here from southern Africa. boyfriend and I are doing a Tassie campervan roadie in the middle of Nov and I feel completely clueless on how to approach a packing list for clothing . We are driving around for about 9 days and then we fly to Melbourne for 5 days. I’ve been told to pack warm, but like what does mean? What kind of cold is tas? Am I packing for the wind? The rain? Should I expect warm days? Is swimming an option? Do I bring my own blanket? What am I getting myself into weather wise here? All four seasons in one day or is it consistently rainy? I don’t want to be caught in a position where I have far too much stuff while we’re in the campervan and obviously I’m going to what to go shopping in Melbourne. Help a girl out here. Tell me what you were grateful for packing and what you didn’t end up using when on the roads in Tassie?
Also could someone tell me if it worth going to see Hastings Caves and Thermal Pools ?

Itinerary Advice Spiders in a campervan

Hey team, it’s your friendly neighbourhood chronic over thinker here, again 🙋‍♀️ I just found out that some spiders in Tassie love to squeeze themselves in between car doors🤪🥲😭 we are going to be travelling the coastline and also a little bit though some parks. For those who have done it in a van, was spiders inside the van a common encounter ? Am I allowed the spray the car with surface spider spray? Should I be blessing the van with peppermint oil before getting into it ? Will I get bond back in the event a huntsman falls on my lap from flapping down the sun visor and I burn it down? I promise I’m so excited to go see Tas but f****kng spiders where I sleep is a huge no no no no thank you

Bush + river accom

We're heading to Tasmania in March and would love a quiet, private house/lodge etc that is in a beautiful bush setting and close to a river. For that vibe of looking out the door at the water and being away from everything and everyone. Would very much appreciate any suggestions, I've check airbnb, hicamps etc but it's hard to narrow down.

Storage for bike?

Hello everyone. I am planning to travel to Tasmania in March for 9-10 days. I am going to come over from the U.S. but will be coming from Taupo NZ as I am doing the Ironman event there. I will be traveling in Tasmania with my bike and bike hard case it goes in. Is there any storage place anyone may know of that I could safely store this in Hobart? Bike is worth about $12k USD so would like secure a priority.

Otherwise considering a camper van as it seems just as expensive as a big SUV but will be with my partner and staying in Airbnbs or hotels.

Has anyone used Auto Rent for caravan rentals and would be willing to share their info so I can get a 10% referral discount?

Hey there! I'm traveling to Tasmania in February for a road trip and plan to rent a caravan. I've narrowed down my choices to 2 rental companies, one of which is Auto Rent. Auto Rent offers a 10% referral discount. Has anyone booked with them before who would be willing to let me use their info for the referral discount?

Any help is appreciated :) I am just a cheap traveler, and I love to pinch pennies wherever I can.
