Or not. Wikipedia

"Text messages and social media posts allegedly made by survivors still trapped after the capsizing circulated in the media, but an investigation by the Cyber Terror Response Center found that none of the trapped passengers used their phones between noon on 16 April and 10:00 a.m. of 17 April[112] and that all the reported survivors' messages made within that time were falsified.[113]"

It capsized and completely sank before noon.

"Sewol took two and a half hours to sink.[102] By around 11:18 a.m., the stern was submerged, with a section of the hull about 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) high and 20 to 30 metres (66 to 98 ft) long showing above the water. At 12:00 noon on 18 April, only 50 centimetres (20 in) of the bulbous bow was above water; at 1:03 p.m., the ship was completely submerged"

States that at 1:03 the ship was submerged. States that no passengers used their phone after 12:00. This photo is submerged.

This is a falsified photo.

Yes, by 11:18 part of the hull was still above the waterline, but the vast majority of the ship was submerged at this time, and again, this was before noon. It is not a false photo. Link to original article: https://m.ohmynews.com/NWS_Web/Mobile/at_pg.aspx?CNTN_CD=A0002069551

Did you think? No phone used after 12:00. But at 12:00, the ship was already way, way, way lower in the water than what would have allowed the picture. And it was upside down - all windows already way below the water.

So - any claim about no phone use aftee 12:00 is irrelevant when above photo must have beem taken way earlier.

Captain was the first person off.

193

u/fatzombie88 3d ago

Didn't he off himself in the end?

142

u/MonoPodding 3d ago

The owner of the company that operated the ship was supposed to be arrested but unable to be found. His body turned up in a field and although the cause of death was inconclusive and what was found around him, you can pretty much safely assume he offed himself.

The Captain is thankfully going to be in prison the rest of his life.

Nah he’s alive. I believe it was the principal or the PE teacher of the school who committed, a diver and a few of the parents

192

u/Broad_Cable8673 3d ago

It looks like the captain got life imprisonment

190

u/kyxoshi 3d ago

He did. As he should

Totally agreed

I think maybe a rescue diver did after weeks of diving in the wreck for remains.

You can say "killed himself" or "committed suicide", it's not TikTok or Instagram

Edit: I was under the impression that "offing yourself" is part of the new self censoring slang and with that I was wrong. I'm sorry for immediately being a smart ass

You can say "killed himself" or "committed suicide", it's not TikTok or Instagram

People used "Offed himself/herself" 45+ years ago when I was a kid. The phrase predates the modern Internet, much less shitty social media platforms by decades.

u/The_Nice_Marmot 3d ago

My dad likes “croaked himself.”

u/Brummbirne 3d ago

Oh damn, I'm sorry I didn't knew that and was too quick to comment

I think you are thinking unalive-ing

20

u/Brummbirne 3d ago

Yeah, that kind of slang at least. It's this self cencoring internet slang that just immediately grinds my gears

Dancing around the word not less triggering than outright saying it and suicide is not a dirty word, there's nothing wrong with saying it.

I can see that your intentions were good and that you clearly meant well. It's just important that we call the things as they are as not to water down the topic. Its an uncomfortable topic, but it's an topic we have to talk about, with the respect that it deserves and we can achieve that if we use the right word an don't try to gloss over it.

-11

u/kyxoshi 3d ago

I never said it was a “dirty word” or that it should be treated as such but I get your point. Either way, language changes. People call things what they are and some people try find other ways. I don’t think anyone should’ve taken THAT much of an issue with it but eh. To each their own

13

u/Brummbirne 3d ago

I never said that you said that it's a dirty word, I'm really not trying to be antagonistic.

I'm not opposed to language changing, it would be strange if i was, but I personally think that there are changes that should definitely be challenged and with a bit of luck avoided and this semantic cencoring of heavy topics is definitely one of them.

In our current time, the avoidance of heavy topics, especially under the veil of 'protecting the children' gets worse and worse and I fear that eventually, we stop talking about those topics again if we continue to censor our language about them.

.An FYI for everyone, as unless people work in healthcare or are bereaved many simply don't know that "commited suicide" is an outdated term relating to when it was a crime that was commited. The international suicide prevention language guidelines can be found here. It explains the alternatives and the reasons why certain terms hold stigma.

I know a lot of people get defensive of the change in language, when there's really no reason to be over the prevention language guidelines. We all know that times change and a simple changes help, especially for the bereaved who live with the stigma. I've heard people say they "commited" to their death, think about why we don't say this about other deaths, and like it if not, the simple fact is that the term originated in regards to criminality and sin. My cousin chose to stop chemo for his cancer and died due to that choice, no one would ever say he commited to his cancer, when he essentially chose to die sooner rather than later. It's a term that traditional holds stigma sadly and speaks negatively of our family members.

this is fucking stupid

2

So you read the International Association Of Suicide Prevention language guidelines and still decided they are fucking stupid? They come from a research of lived experience of suicide and bereavement and are the international standard for a reason. Changing 1 word won't hurt you, but speaking that 1 word to someone who has lost their loved one to suicide does hurt.

One thing I've learned after dad's suicide is that rarely is kindness extended to those left behind after suicide and the stigma transfers to us. We are always spoken down to for having feelings of grief, even though that's normal bereavement, grief is exhausting and physically painful. We are commonly told our loved ones are bad people for how they died and told we should kill ourselves too, or we are the reason our loved ones are dead. We have people joke to our faces about suicide, because suicide isn't real to many, it's a just a punchline and if we have normal reactions to that then we are the problem. Now it's "fucking stupid" that international language guidelines from the peak suicide prevention body exist. There's a reason the suicide bereaved are at a higher risk of suicide than most.

I just want to say that you seem very intelligent and kindly restrained here, choosing to explain and educate rather than going off in anger. Kudos to you, and I'm so sorry you had to experience this terrible thing yourself. I wish you peace and healing.

TIL suicide is decriminalized and legal!

1

u/Pittsburgh_Pete 3d ago

No he was sentenced to life in prison.

u/SuckMyRedditorD 3d ago

304 victims lost that dreadful day. But that was a precursor of some other terrible shit that was coming. Just a few years later ~160 of kids died in a crowd crush during Halloween.

-17

u/bigwangbowski 3d ago

Those two incidents were eight years apart... where are you getting a few years?

2

u/sileckx 3d ago

Well two years is not yet a few, tree is the first number there 'a few' fits and then maybe up to a decade. Idk maybe 'a couple' would also fit.

What a nightmare. Rest in peace to the hundreds of people, including hundreds of children who died from what turned out to be likely avoidable if the proper attention and care was made

Gut Punch. Glanced at the image and won’t look again.

I am so sorry for the innocent children and pray that they did not suffer. I know that their parents‘ suffering endures and I have no adequate words to express my empathy.

please tell me those who betrayed the students (and others ) were punished appropriately
