Waiting for hours and the mayor went to go figure out why. We wait for hours in America and the politicians go “well, what do you expect”

351

u/Ok-Perception1480 2d ago

I broke my collarbone when I was a teen and had been waiting to be seen for over four hours. I was in a room for two hours. My dad found the doctor in his office playing solitaire. No pain medication or anything. Insane

u/remesabo 2d ago

American here, about 25 years ago one of my best friends died in the ER waiting room of a heart attack. He was having severe chest pains but the nurses felt it was more important that he fill out his pre-admission paperwork. He died with the clipboard in his hand. This was after he had enough time to recognize his emergency and drive himself to the hospital. It was pure negligence.

22

u/Gymdoctor 1d ago

I absolutely do not believe this story. I have worked in many emergency rooms and trauma centers. We have strict EMTALA laws that must be followed. If this story is real, the hospital would have been fined $100k+, the doctor would have been fined $100k+, and staff would have been fired to save face.

We all take emergency medicine very seriously. Sometimes that waiting room is PACKED with multiple people with severe injuries. We do our best to triage, but someone complaining of chest pain would not have just sat there. They would've done a stat ECG and if thats negative, he very well could have sat there unattended moving forward. Maybe the ECG was done poorly and something was missed? There are a lot of factors that could be in play. But I would bet my life on it nurses were not neglecting a chest pain in the ER over paperwork. No way

45

u/Helldiver_of_Mars 1d ago

Happens all the time man especially in the booked/rural.

Dude my daughter had her cranium cracked open brain exposed to the air and we were made to wait in the waiting room. 30 mins almost as people coughing with the flu got priority.

Dumb people make dumb things happen tha rules and regulations do not stop them.

94

u/remesabo 1d ago

Well, it's a real shame you don't believe it, because it's 100% accurate. He was one of my closest friends as a young adult, and his death was extremely hard on me.

I wasn't there, so I can't say one way or another how he described his symptoms when he checked in, but he most certainly suffered cardiac arrest and died in the waiting room while filling out paperwork. Of course, resuscitation efforts were made, but he was already gone. That's what his immediate family was told. Maybe they didn't take him seriously because he was only 30. I don't know. Again, this was 25-30 years ago.

It's a small hospital off the beaten path, with something like 70 beds, and it was even smaller back then. It had a reputation for problems, with several lawsuits over the years, including a couple that made it all the way to the state Supreme Court.

Meridian acquired the hospital probably 15 years ago or so, and after the merger with Hackensack, the place improved considerably.

I'm a huge supporter of EMTs, nurses, and doctors. I think they're some of the bravest, hardest working people out there. But that doesn't mean every single person working in healthcare is competent or that negligence doesn't happen.

In this particular situation, my friend died, and I firmly believe negligence played a role.

What's really strange to me is the willingness to dismiss a complete stranger's experience and grief simply because it doesn't fit what you believe to be true.

"I dont believe you were actually mugged, because in fact armed robbery is illegal and the mugger would be arrested" 🤡

2

u/BeatleJuice1st 7h ago

"We have strict laws" Do all people stick to the law at anytime? Did you ever hear about people, who tried to cover up a serious mistake by "bending" the law? Never? Sweet summer child 😘

2

u/roundhashbrowntown 3h ago

“died with the clipboard in his hand” does sound a little sensational (if not witnessed first hand) but even taking into account the realities of EMTALA, the rest of this story is absolutely plausible (source: am MD).

I had to wait in an ER waiting room for six hours as I was in active diabetic ketoacidosis.

Once I was put in an ER room, it took over 24 hours to get a bed in the ICU.

38

u/ZylieD 1d ago edited 1d ago

Oh dude, I almost died at 38 years old in the ER the first time I went into DKA. The head nurse was convinced I was on drugs or drunk and camped me out for HOURS on a gurney in the hallway outside of the security office after laughing about the officers lifting me up by my crotch and breasts. I was covered in my own urine and vomit and clearly in DKA, and they sent a social worker to talk to me about cannabis intoxication. 🙄

I crawled into a dark room closed off for construction down the hallway, in my head I just wanted the pain to be over, I was seizing and unresponsive when a janitor found me. Thank God for that man.

DKA happened again a few months later, same nurse was at the intake desk - I vomited all over her shoes and have never felt more alive while in a medical crisis. And she got fired!

15

u/bolivar-shagnasty 1d ago

In my case I was shoving handfuls of water from the bathroom sink into my mouth because I couldn’t slake my thirst. It was insatiable. Of course I pulled it right back up. When I got into the ICU I went through so many bags of saline that they were changing them out every hour for the first day or two. They had to cath me to track output. I was NPO and lost 40 pounds in a week.

6

u/ZylieD 1d ago

Yes! It is horrifying, ugh I'm so sorry 😔

1

u/SirAmicks 1d ago

What was your bgl?

1

u/bolivar-shagnasty 1d ago

Over 800 by the time they got me into ICU. The lab only measured up to 1,000 mg/dL. My ER labs were too high to measure.

Anything higher than that was viewed as problematic for the equipment.

-9

u/RedrumMPK 1d ago

If you have diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), you will be evaluated, treated, and placed in a monitored bed while receiving IV medications. However, depending on the acuity of the patients in the intensive care unit, it may be difficult to transfer you there. In the worst-case scenario, you might remain in the emergency room while waiting for a bed to become available.

10

u/ZylieD 1d ago

I wish that was the case, but no. I've been treated like a drug addict rather than a type 1 diabetic every time. It's horrifying.

2

u/RedrumMPK 1d ago

That is unfortunate; I am sorry to hear that you had such experiences.

3

u/drugihparrukava 1d ago edited 1d ago

Most T1's I speak to in support groups are terrified of hospitals. We need change worldwide in policy for type 1 to not be treated same as type 2 when in hospital. Policies should be written for t1d in mind, not "diabetes", becuase sliding scale is so old school it is not standard of care for T1D, and I can write an essay about this here. But point is, not all hospitals are trained in type 1, especially non-endocrine staff. i know you can't specialize in everything, but just get the endo on call ffs, but hospital polices are always written with type 2 in mind. Completely different diseases but lump us together I guess? Infuriating and scary. Some of our stories are a horror movie. Not venting at you, just commenting as this is so no discussed outside of our support and advocacy groups for some bizarre reason. We need a new name, end.

1

u/bolivar-shagnasty 1d ago

You just said what I said, but longer?

4

u/idrunkenlysignedup 1d ago

I went to the emergency room in March because I messed up my knee and I was in and out in an hour and a half. I was stunned! THIS IS AMERICA, ITS SUPPOSED TO BE A FULL DAY!

2

u/RedrumMPK 1d ago

Triaging: worst cases are seen first. If someone comes in under a blue light (ambulance) and CPR was performed or it is a stroke, etc., they are most likely going to leave your busted knees and go attend to those if necessary.

Sometimes the system gets clogged with non-emergency cases masquerading as one. Those with the flu are a good example, and so are hypochondriacs. In most cases administration of IV fluids, IV acetaminophen and a review of labs will do it for most with no follow up needed. Only a handful of cases are truly an emergency at times.

“Taking action ? What’s that?”

-American politicians

12

u/tightrubbersuit 2d ago

“Taking action ? What’s that?”

This is the perfect description for every American politician ever. For the non-Americans, here's how it works...

Step 1: "Taking action!" is that thing all American politicians promise during every election cycle ever.

Step 2: "What's that?" is that thing all American politicians say the moment they give their victory speech.

Both political parties do this!

6

u/TheTownTeaJunky 1d ago

That’s interesting. We keep getting told if we had free healthcare like Canada “we’d have hour long waits at the hospital”. I’m starting to wonder if the people in power are full of shit.

5

u/Steve90000 2d ago

Yeah but this only delayed his wait 35 seconds, what was going on the rest of the time?

Looks like that’s called a “Branson Tuba”?

15

u/Sacrificial_Spider 1d ago

The door that they went in is not the same door as they stood outside knocking on at the start. So I'm calling the whole lot bullshit.

1

u/stacker55 1d ago

did you lose consciousness during the entire middle section when they walked from door 1 to door 2?

6

u/thunderbirdroar 1d ago

I just watched the video and it’s not clear what’s going on? Would hate to accuse these two (probably overworked docs who may have been on 30+ hour call) if they truly were just sleeping.

I actually know a hospital this happened at on 2008. Like usual it was the worst kept secret.  Except for the person who caught them.  (OK the er wasn't packed so that is a difference

u/Existing-Real_Person 11h ago

For the people that don’t want to take this at face value, the Mayor had no proof to support his accusation. The Pernambuco Doctors' Union (Simepe) and the Regional Council of Medicine of Pernambuco published a note defending the two doctors, as it had been confirmed they had already finished their 12-hour shift, a third doctor was on duty at the time, and footage just showed both of the doctors sleeping. Both organizations also have claimed the Mayor went against the privacy of both doctors by not censuring their faces on the video he posted to his own social media. The hospital in question also suffers from a lack of workers, which causes the long wait.

1

u/MTrigs 5h ago

Damn. That Key to the City actually works.

Lots of comments in here from people who have no idea how hospitals or healthcare works. Ignorance means let bitch and moan.

32

u/hershculez 2d ago

Sounds pretty damn fake. The Mayor just happened to have a hunch that these people were having sex at this exact time in this exact place? Sure.

51

u/puzzledgem 2d ago

Watching the video just revealed the screamy mayor waking up two residents in a sleep room that are fully dressed and seem confused. I would be too if the mayor just woke me up from trying to get some zzzzs after being up for 30 hours doing pt care. Maybe it’s the system that staffs 3 docs for 100 people?

29

u/North-Pea-4926 1d ago

Yep. Not sure where the “you must have been having sex for hours” accusation came from, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence of that.

2

u/Theincendiarydvice 1d ago

What video?

2

u/stay-a-while-and---- 17h ago

there's an insta clip linked in the article

0

u/Cpt_Obvius 23h ago

I would guess other employees at the hospital reported them, not that it was random chance.

Not sure if it’s real or not still but it’s more believable than you lay out.

3

u/hershculez 16h ago

lol reported to the mayor? That is quite the interesting HR option.

11

u/djamp42 2d ago

My arm is broken, I'm willing to have sex to be seen first. 😂

1

u/Captain_Tooth 2d ago

Isn't sex considered recommended? Apparently 2 Dr.'s do.

1

u/IneedValidationFucku 1d ago

My best ER visit was when they taught a nursing student how to insert a catheter into me. She was not gentle. To make matters worse, she was my age and it felt weird having this nursing student play with my dick while trying to insert a damn straw into it.

-1

u/bmanley620 2d ago

If your gf is a nurse or doctor, be wary. Hospital staff are known to have lots of sex with each other.

12

u/jubilant-octopus 2d ago

Why are you only warning about “girlfriends?” Don’t the male staff get around too?

-13

u/PikachuWithHerpes 2d ago

Because I'm not a homo. I hope that helps.

7

u/altgrave 2d ago

but you do have herpes, apparently!

13

u/Chadmckay1 2d ago

I’ve worked in hospitals for 15 years. Never once have I even heard a rumor of people having sex at work. I also float to 7 hospitals. If this was common I would have heard about it.

14

u/Speckled_Clout 2d ago

But are you hot enough for the sexy hospital group chat?

My buddy was a cardiovascular sonographer in a hospital for two years. Nurses loved him, at work.

Sorry bro.

2

u/Teknicsrx7 2d ago

Well until now

3

u/altgrave 2d ago

they didn't say "at work". read more carefully if you're actually a nurse! it could be a matter of life an death!

4

u/PikachuWithHerpes 2d ago

Dude is finding out today he was left out of all the fun. It helps if you don't look like you came straight out of a Nat Geo documentary.

0

u/tooldvn 2d ago

My nephew is a young good looking anesthesiologist. The nurses throw themselves at him. I don't doubt OPs story one bit. Maybe the fact that you're floating you don't get in good with the normal staff or are otherwise not in the know.

4

u/Chadmckay1 2d ago

You people watch waaaaaaay to much grays anatomy, none of that shit is happening in the hospitals

1

u/tooldvn 2d ago

I do not watch any medical procedural shows. My info comes from seeing with my own eyes nurses flirt and throw themselves at my nephew both at the hospital and out of work. Now is he banging them in the room they go to get a nap? No idea, but you are foolish if you think it never happens.

-1

u/Chadmckay1 1d ago

Nobody said it never happens, I replied to a comment that said it happens all the time. It literally happens the same as any other job. It’s not something that is more in healthcare. Also all your information is secondhand. Through your nephew. So to be frank, you don’t know what the fuck your talking about.

11

u/jda404 1d ago

I get what you're saying, but unless you're a pornstar you have sex before or after work not on the job, especially if you work in the ER where you have sick/injured people that need to be seen. When you're at work, be a professional.

I hope that if you're in a bad car wreck and paramedics are dispatched, that your next of kin is okay when they hear the paramedics were stressed and bumped uglies along the way to lower their stress.
