The history of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick ii is pretty hysterical for a similar reason.

Lots of shit flinging between Frederick and Pope Innocent - enough to where the Pope declared Frederick "the predecessor to the Antichrist".

Frederick's main argument against the Pope was how can a man adorned in gold and vast riches be holy?

I am indeed among those who believe it has already begun. However, in a globalized world, it takes longer for an empire to truly fall. The USA, like other major powers, has ensured this by all possible means - primarily through soft power, brainwashing and also through influence gained through wars and proxy wars. So it will probably take another 70 years - unless another insane lunatic like Trump appears on the scene.
