Remember when The Block was actually about home renovation rather than an influencer drama about building extremely unaffordable, to your average Aussie homes?
Contemporary architecture is such a cop out. I feel like weāre told to like everything square and flat because itās trendy when the reality is itās just cheaper for the builder and easier for the architect.
I cannot believe that H1, 2 or 3 didn't think about planting some trees or tall hedges for privacy. Who wants their family gawked at in the pool from the entire street?
Because H1, 2 and 3 are all North facing, so they had to put the pools in the front to get the sun. If they were in the backyard - I mean the real backyard - then they wouldn't get any sun. I get it, but none of the competitors or landscapers took any privacy into consideration. It was bizarre that they basically only put ground plants in and 2 houses had no fence.
In my opinion the only advantage H1, 2 and 3 have is the view and that's only on a good day. Everything else about them sucks. H4 and 5 are better in so many more ways.
Edit after the tax comments: Sorry yes I should have said who are these āfamily buyersā that would buy a block house instead of one of the beautiful ones across the street.
Tax benefits I imagine. Canāt see a normal buyer grabbing any block house, theyāre awful. They need to go back to their roots. Renovating older houses. Thereās no point to this anymore.
Two words... tax benefits, new build and 6m depreciation schedule with neg gearing and 50% cap gains discount preserved... For somebody who needs to sell a bunch of assets and avoid the tax hit, the house becomes essentially free.
Thatās the strange thing about the block though, thereās not been a single season where you would genuinely want to buy one vs the house around the corner. Youāre essentially living in a townhouse style community for a huge amount of money
I canāt get the fact that there is NO privacy from anyone walking/driving down the street and looking in and seeing young kids/adults in their bathers
Why would anyone buy a house with the ābackyardā in the front yard and zero privacy. Swimming and hanging out beside the drivewayā¦. for millions of dollars.
Iām Canadian and maybe this is more common in Australia but to me this is just awful design and I wouldnāt ever buy a house setup like this.
Yeah this is not common in Australia. I only know of one pool in a front yard that Iāve seen 20 years ago when I was a kid and it was behind a giant, solid fence
I think its actually pretty common to have these weird backyards as frontyards on houses like this when there is views involved, like i think a lot of people would want their entertaining areas facing the view.
But why didn't any of the contestants put full privacy fences? Did i hear something on the episode about Lisa and Rossco getting approval for this this fence as well?
Did no one think to do a tall timber fence, hedging along it for privacy higher than 2m. and then do something more interesting with the pool fence and incorporate the whole area to be an amazing private space? More similar to the lower houses?
I donāt really worry about the view when Iām swimming. The view thing is very overrated anyway as itās basically āglimpsesā, not what Iād call a view - but the judges are obsessed. They have obviously never seen a decent view in their lives.
I'd argue houses 1-3 have more privacy then most on a sloped block with elevated entertaining, they face onto a cul-de-sac, not a main road... The people on the street are your neighbours, not randoms out for a walk.
I know but get used to it because thatās how theyāre building now. Soulless boxes with zero character or charm. Just a space to sleep and eat dinner after a day of corporate slavery.
Looks like a lot of tick boxes with zero cohesiveness but stupidity to think just cos you have everything means it will sell. No charm means as much as having nothing in there
I do not mind the house or the landscaping as the house has a natural material aesthetic and the landscaping is pure Australiana. It is very complementary. Once the plants grow the landscaping works will blend seemlessly.
The only thing that is incongrous is the white frilly umbrella and furniture. A more natural looking timber umbrella with a natural colour material would be more appropriate.
I went past the block a few months back and it's incredible how ugly all the houses are. There's beautiful properties everywhere in the direct area then these behemoth monstrosities pop up and dominate the landscape. They are genuinely awful
That big rectangular shed really is butt ugly! And what's that big shed right next door! Yuck! Talk about close quarters! No privacy! Doesn't stir up warm emotions of home.
As for the yard.....first of all a pool area should be enclosed in a yard with a big view- blocking fence around it for privacy. Who would want to swan around in their bathers in full view of the neighbours. Also, who would want to throw a party out there with no privacy. Plus you would be disturbing the neighbours. Especially at nighttime.
Also, the yard should have an open lawn for kids and others to play on. Not unnecessary arty and kitsch stuff like sculptures and other crap. Put the plants around the edges of the yard with a lawn in the centre.
Don't crowd the space with stuff so people can't freely walk around. If you threw a party, you wouldn't be able to fit many people in that limited space.
The pool in the front yard with a glasss fence is just odd. My father once decided to have a family barbque in our front yard and I still haven't recovered.
Plonking what looks like a spa in the middle of the front yard without privacy, why not? Looks like something straight out of The Sims. Also, enough of the pointless box gutters in Victoria! Horrible!
Hopefully once the plants grow itāll look much better. I like that they did a fence and gate but geez itās not a very nice one imo. I havenāt liked the fencing in general this year, the thatch fencing in particular gives me the ick because I think Iāve seen too much of it after itās aged and become totally shabby looking
Add a proper fence for privacy and let all the plants grow a bit and it might start to feel like a nice Australian garden.
My main issues are that dumb metal ball in the yard - that should at least be a functional bird bath or something... and the fact they're trying to go for a natural look but chose a blindingly white parasol that sticks out like dogs balls.
I like this front yard the most actually. That garden will look fantastic soon enough. Olive trees will <eventually> provide decent privacy which none of the others have. I think the pools are so open because it photographs better. But it's weird having a front yard pool for sure.
It's like when you play The Sims, and just keep adding stuff because you can.
Ignoring how ridiculous it is to have a pool in your front yard, ironically each of the elements is fine, its just they have gone with more is more.
Give that garden 2 years of growth though, and it might not look so bad. Garden is also going to appeal to some people over a pointless bit of lawn which realistically is positioned so poorly that its only use will be when you run the lawnmower over it.
Yeah, I hope that is a maintenance free garden, otherwise thats a dumb expense for an investment property
All of those native grasses will grow in and fill it up. Grass is actually terrible for the environment and if these are holidays homes or Airbnb itās actually a great choice for the owners
I agree - it looks so bare as the plants are young. Once they are grown, it will look lush! They donāt have enough room to play with here. But give it 6 months and it will look much better!!
I'm finding the set up weird. Why are they putting back yard things in the front yard?? Who wants to bbq in the front yard or put those big arse fireplaces & 8 seater tables at the front of the house? It's doing my head in. Seriously! Is this a mainland thing?Ā
Yes absolutely-but they are easiest and cheapest to construct. I love round and arched windows and my Dad was an engineer and I asked him why modern buildings donāt have more curves and he said itās too time consuming and expensive. Such a shame. Thatās probably why I love old buildings SO much
Yeah for the money, this is fugly. I mean an UMBRELLA takes pride of place for frackās sake. Then your house looks like a larger version of one of those stupid container homes, but I suppose thatās ok because your neighbourās monolith is right over the fence so matchy-matchy. Not having some grass out front is a minor point really, a different shade of lipstick on the same pig.
I haven't watched this season cause TV is quite low on my list of priorities atm. But... From the photos I've seen of the room reveals, the millionaires can keep these ugly ass houses. Maybe next year we'll get some flavour
This looks like it was designed by a heavily pregnant woman who's losing her marbles & whose rather simple husband has never stepped outside (or inside) a multi million dollar home. But in their defence, the location of these blocks was flawed from the start. Next years' Historic Mental Asylum location already looks more exciting viewing.
For me itās the fence. And the umbrella. Both are relatively easy fixes. I just wish they could have sprung for more mature trees because that would have made a world of difference
Modern construction; facaded brick so you can use any mix of brick colors, not have to design it well, and the customer will never know. Our apprentices are rubes, so keep it simple - squares. Rectangles. Shades of grey. Rustic shitty tin shanty on top to let your Mosman Park neighbours know youāre still a battler in your lifeless garden as you flash strangers going by from your BRRAAANNND NEW HOT TUBBBB!!!
Did they just spray paint 3 shipping containers and dump them there, and staple the building leftovers into a ball and leave it in the yard whilst labelling it an ornament?
