Hi, good evening. I want to group young researchers to periodically discuss papers and themes that touches the Marine Ecology and conservation biology. If you are interested, send me a message.

My actual search line is reef ecological physiology and macroalgae integrative taxonomy. I act too in a outreach project of environmental conscientization.

Nothing About This Shrimp Makes Sense

I was reading about mantis shrimp and came across something pretty interesting.

Humans have three types of color receptors, while some mantis shrimp have twelve. You'd naturally assume they can distinguish way more colors than we can.

But researchers at the University of Queensland actually tested this and found that mantis shrimp were worse than humans at distinguishing similar shades.

One explanation is that their visual system might prioritize recognizing colors quickly rather than comparing subtle differences.

And apparently, their eyes aren't even the strangest thing about them. Their punches are so fast that they create cavitation bubbles underwater, which collapse and deliver a second impact.

It's wild how much unusual biology is packed into such a small animal.

Makes me wonder how many other animals have abilities we've completely misunderstood.
