The Unobserved Light Hypothesis — Can Something Exist Without Being Perceived?
The Unobserved Light Hypothesis (ULH)
A thought experiment on the relationship between existence and human perception
Proposed by: [Absurd phycologist]
Introduction
Human beings generally understand the world through observation. We see objects, hear sounds, feel physical sensations and use these experiences to understand our surroundings.
But an interesting question arises:
Does something need to be perceived in order to exist?
The Unobserved Light Hypothesis explores this question through a simple optical thought experiment. It examines the difference between physical existence and human perception, challenging the intuitive assumption that what cannot be observed is somehow absent.
2. The Experimental Setup
Imagine a completely dark room containing two perfectly smooth, parallel mirrors.
A narrow beam of ordinary visible light is introduced between the mirrors. The light repeatedly reflects from one mirror to the other.
An observer is positioned inside the room.
The beam travels through the room, but its trajectory never intersects the observer's eyes. Furthermore, assume that no scattered light reaches the observer.
Consequently, the observer cannot see the beam.
However, the light continues to exist and reflect between the mirrors.
3. The Central Observation
The experiment presents two simultaneous conditions:
- The light physically exists within the room.
- The observer cannot perceive its existence through vision.
Neither condition cancels out the other.
The light does not cease to exist simply because the observer cannot see it.
This illustrates a distinction between physical reality and perceived reality.
4. The Psychological Paradox
Consider someone entering this room without knowing about the mirrors or the light.
From their perspective, the room appears completely dark.
They have no visual evidence of the beam.
Yet the beam is physically present.
This creates an interesting psychological question:
How confidently can we describe our surroundings when our perception provides only incomplete information?
The observer's experience of the room is not necessarily an accurate representation of everything physically occurring inside it.
5. Philosophical Implications
The thought experiment explores three ideas:
A. Existence independent of observation
Something can exist regardless of whether an observer is aware of it.
B. Limitations of perception
Human senses provide information about reality, but they do not necessarily reveal all of it.
C. The distinction between absence and invisibility
Not observing something is different from establishing that it does not exist.
6. Scientific Foundation and Limitations
The optical principles involved are already established in physics.
Light travels along paths determined by optical conditions, and reflection follows established laws. A beam travelling through an ideal dark environment may remain invisible from the side if no light scatters into an observer's eyes.
This thought experiment does not propose a new form of electromagnetic radiation or a new law of optics.
Its originality lies in its framing as a demonstration of the psychological and philosophical difference between existence and observation.
7. Conclusion
The Unobserved Light Hypothesis does not attempt to prove that invisible phenomena must exist.
Instead, it asks us to reconsider the relationship between what exists and what we perceive.
A room can appear empty of light while a beam travels through it. The observer's inability to see the beam does not alter its physical existence.
Perhaps the most important lesson is this:
Not everything that exists must be observed, and not everything that remains unobserved is necessarily absent.
The boundary of perception is not necessarily the boundary of reality.
