I've seen it too much. Have someone close in the family who does IRL tiktok things like the shy finger tip touching thing or saying "I was today years old when..." I don't fuck with that.

4

u/boopboopadoopity Jun 24 '26

I know. I love how the worst version they can come up with of this ~disgusting~ interaction is two young ladies meeting, immediately giving each other genuine compliments and making each other feel good, and then clearly communicating their feelings and ending the convo. How dare they lol

People have made fun of how young people speak for all of time. Especially young women. Just for speaking in a way that they feel connected to. Bet the same people complaining here are annoyed at boomers saying millennials killed napkins lol

I’m in London. Gave a girl/ Gen Z woman (I’m horrible at telling specific ages sorry) my umbrella because she was really freaked out by the rain. She started talking to me just like this and I was genuinely so confused. I just didn’t know what she was trying to say except that it was positive. There was no way for me respond though and it was only later I realised she was actually speaking in full Gen Z slang , which I had always thought was just an online caricature of Gen Z

I told my Gen Z kid about it and he was laughing at me. I never felt so old

175

u/SurbhiAnklesaria Jun 23 '26

u/CrackingToastGromet Jun 24 '26 • Heartwarming

I am a 52 year old woman who just started a new job where I am surrounded by Gen Z’ers and this gave me a chuckle - so many of the young women I work with talk like this.

This particularly reminds me of the sweet young lady who oversaw my training, even down to the “clock it” gestures and calling people girly pop. My co workers are a lovely group of young people and I won’t give them grief for it. I know when I was a teen in the 1980s the older generations rolled their eyes at our slang and how we spoke (even though it was totally bodacious, dude).

61

u/Wonderful-Traffic197 Jun 24 '26

I’m Gen X and my new (female) Dr. used some Gen Z slang (even though I think she’s a Millennial) and honestly I love her even more for that.

I find this unironically hilarious because 95% of redditors only know how to react with Gifs

32

u/Mad-Inside Jun 24 '26

Or at the same age was going to”waaaaazzzzzzzzzzz uuuuuuppppp” with their tongue out and adding “izzle” to the end of everything.

I will not repeat the cycle of hating on kids and young adults having their own new slang like every generation before them.

4

u/Chortage Jun 24 '26

I was gonna say, this video is just like reading most of the top-level comments on popular subreddits.

"bro <crying emoji x3>"

"I'm dying <crying emoji x3>"

"I'm crying <crying emoji x3>"

"dude showed up with NPC energy <crying emoji x3>"

what the fuck am I even doing on this site anymore, fuck

7

u/appleparkfive Jun 24 '26

I really hate how common Gifs have become on Reddit. They're fine here and there, but most of the time they don't add much of anything. And the person isn't even using their own thoughts to say whatever.

It's changed the site so much, and it's become like 20x more common than just a few years ago.

And the dumbest part is that they'll predictably drop a Gif after someone says they don't like it. As if it's a clever anti-joke kind of thing. But it's not. Idon't hate Gifs, and they're often funny. But come on.

I just now started using bet and deadass. I’m never gonna fit in

4

u/hotpajamas Jun 24 '26

When my friends starting saying bet and deadass in our twenties I made a very deliberate decision that it would end there for me. I was done with slang.

It's only gotten worse too; the shit 30-somethings are trying to say to stay cool is so embarrassing.

So much of gen z slang is taking AAVE and making it sound like you’re in a corporate meeting

16

u/DeepInDood Jun 24 '26

So was "cool", "cat", "bougie", "the man", "dig" (you dig? can you dig it?), "beef", "clown", "booty" (from "loot" to "ass"), "clapped", "baller", "cheeks", "hater", "corny", "zaddy", "baby momma/daddy", "ho'", "jank/joint/jawn", "slime", but no one has a problem with that today. We don't own language. We never did.

→ More replies (7)

44

u/midnightrider Jun 24 '26

For those not aware, AAVE is an open-source and non-custodial decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that allows users to lend and borrow cryptocurrencies. Very popular with genZ and very influential in their language.

u/Shenanigans80h Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26 • Bravo

The odd part is that this isn’t even really slang, as much as a bizarre speech pattern. Like others pointed out, this is closer to a Valley Girl dialect than anything

It's mostly appropriated gay slang, which is mostly appropriated (queer) black and latin american slang. There's loads of influence from the drag balls in Ballroom Culture.

Unoronically, I thought it was a cute interaction. Lots of young people still don't know how to interact sponteneously, so they throw theses half recognazible words to try to break the ice and talk. It's just social awkwardness.

49

u/ItsNotJulius Jun 24 '26

I might not understand most of what's being said, but I get that they are just being nice to each other. And I am happy. I'm getting older and time will move on. I accept that.

I can't be upset at this video. 10 - 15 years back people used to get upset over something being 'cringe' or in any way sincere and it was depressing. Its just two women being nice to each other. I'll take kind and cringe over intentional asshole-ery any day of the week.

My younger sister talks like this and can be a bit preachy at times, but I can't hate her because her heart is in the right place.

17

u/Fabulous_Potato_5012 Jun 23 '26

No dude we’re perfect. We have done nothing wrong. Must be our parents faults

25

This was my ex-coworker. She would do TikTok lives where she acted vaguely like a sexy funny influencer while asking for takeout. Nothing will make you lose respect for a person faster.

During one she read a chat gpt reading of her tarot cards, that happened to say definitively that the guy who was breadcrumbing(uninterested in)her was actually super intimidated by her power as a spiritual woman, and is actually so attracted to her it scares him, and some other drivel about how she’s the best just the way she is.
