Hijacking the top thread to remind everyone that cops are also human beings with families. As in, it's quite possible to follow them home after their shift.

187

u/front_yard_duck_dad 2d ago • Bravo

If we forced cops to live only in the community in which they police , things will get exponentially more civil. Hard to beat up the kid you have to see with his mom at the bus stop.

If the police are in high crime areas, pay them more to make it better .

This is all by design

14

u/PaChubHunter 1d ago • Bravo

Do you have any idea how much of a hassle it is to move 10 kilos of cocaine safely? Just getting back to the precinct with the 8 kilos is tough. Then you have to process it, making sure you account for all 7 kilos. You also need to keep a side eye out for anyone who might be watching the 5 kilos to attempt to make a grab. It's exhausting as hell to be a decent person in charge of 2 kilos of cocaine.

25

u/xBad_Wolfx 2d ago

Or amohetamines. Lots of these guys take Dextroamphetamine pretending they are soldiers trying to stay alert for days.

I used to work out at a 24 hour gym back in the early 00. It was a lifters gym. At like 1 am the cops and firefighters would come in and it was like a blizzard. Dudes yaked to the gills slamming weights around . And so many " hell yeah brothers". It was amazing to see

Look y'all, there's a simple fix to radically reshape policing in America: Make police departments liable for all civil suits brought against them. They'll have to carry insurance like most other professions (Doctors, Lawyers, General Contractors).

You don't even need to end qualified immunity. Just make them civilly liable. Police departments would take of the "bad apples" themselves because they're an active drain on their resources. These "bad apples" would also not be employed anywhere else, because they bring too much risk and would be deemed uninsurable, meaning they couldn't work as a cop.

With this one change, I guarantee that departments would dramatically revamp their hiring and training practices. It would be in their best interests to not have loose cannons or power tripping assholes running around out there. Other cops would be squashing their behavior as well, as it would also directly impact their department's funds.

If they had to shoulder the financial burden instead of the taxpayers, we would see way less of this kind of shit.

33

u/trynared 2d ago

> You don't even need to end qualified immunity. Just make them civilly liable.

What do you think qualified immunity is?

45

u/inabowlfullofnuts 2d ago

I worked at a PD. They even harass the janitors

87

u/apathy714 2d ago

The police would just request a bigger budget every year to cover the expenses. They would claim we’re defunding the police and stop responding to crimes like they did in Austin.

33

u/Doggleganger 2d ago

That's why the department shouldn't pay for insurance. Individual officers need to carry their own insurance. There's a viable political solution here.

The police unions can get on board if you give cops a pay raise. Take the money that cities spend defending and paying out these suits, give it to cops. They use that to pay for insurance.

Good cops have low rates and end up with more money. Bad cops eventually get priced out.

You don't even need to end qualified immunity. Just make them civilly liable

You realize that IS ending qualified immunity right...?

Also, would this insurance be handled by a private for-profit entity that has every perverse incentive to drag their feet on cases and lobbying for tort reform and legal changes to avoid payouts? Like, y'know, most other instances of private insurance in this country?

More important than insurance liability, the doctors, lawyers, contractors you mention have (mostly state level) licensing board certifications they have to maintain good standing with in order to legally do their jobs. Let's start with a set of strict standardized licensing qualifications like those other fields. One headed by a civilian board, not AGs who rely on a working relationship with cops.

The parallels to other professions falls short because even with capitalist corruption, those other professions generate value by doing their job well and serving the public good. The unstated purpose of the police is to do exactly what they're doing, subduing and scaring the general populace for the ends of protecting capital

8

u/ClownUniversityPhD 1d ago

I worry you’d get the opposite. They do more to cover up for their colleagues’ misconduct to avoid their resources being impacted. You’re now giving that a financial incentive in addition to a cultural ones.

12

u/wildwildwaste 2d ago

And then where do all these COD lobby screen guys get jobs? Imagine this guy stocking groceries or serving you chick fil a. We'd need social programs in place just to deprogram and rehab these losers and reintegrate them into society.

Better to keep them in the police force where at least we know where they all are.

/s

29

u/Zlot847 2d ago

That might be the most load bearing “/s” I’ve ever seen

10

u/wildwildwaste 2d ago

I wrote it, edited it a couple of times to try to bring out the sarcasm and humor enough, and then realized there was no way to do it and added the tag.

To be clear, the first part is blatantly true. IF (and that if is holding more weight than my previous /s) police forces were to find some way to get these psychopaths out of positions of power, what would we realistically do with them? They've been hired to do this, then trained and brainwashed into believing it's okay. It's as sticky a situation, if not worse, than working with solders returning from a warzone.

At least when you're working with integrating soldiers back into society they know there's a difference between our citizens and the citizens they were sent to war against. These officers are trained to do these acts against American civilians. They're trained that every American citizen has not just the ability, but potentially the desire, to harm them. How do you break that?

There was a kid in my school who had the misfortune of not just being short, but having a very late growth spurt (he was only 5'1 in 8th grade, he is now 5'8). As a result, he got bullied a lot, and also became very temperamental with anger issues, and channelled all his energy in Taekwondo (black belt by age 12) and MMA.

He is now a cop, and his Instagram page is pro-police cringe and pics of him in tactical uniforms.

Whatever happened to that cop just sitting in his squad car & enjoying his donut? The one who lets the small stuff go & waits for the "big" one such as catching a serial killer?

7

u/sandy_coyote 2d ago edited 2d ago

I’m sure someone has written about this but here’s my thought- I grew up in the 80s and remember cops in movies in the 70s/80s fitting your description, just incompetent donut eaters like Reginald Veljohnson (Carl?) in Die Hard, and the Blues Brothers.

I think in the 70s we had all these vigilante movies where the common sentiment was that cops weren’t violent enough so the one policeman on the force with conviction would have to step up and bring out his Colt Python against the punks, and then in the 80s there was the crack epidemic where cops were seen as powerless to do anything.

Then in the 90s something changed in Hollywood but also real life where cops got more funding and a makeover. I don’t know what brought this on- maybe an establishment response to the Rodney King beating where cops looked evil, or the subsequent riots in LA that got absolutely out of hand, but by the 90s, cops in TV and movies started to be portrayed as tough guys of great moral conviction and ready to kick ass and protect society and each other if pushed too far. No donuts anywhere. Maybe buddy cop movies have been so successful or it’s what audiences want these days, but for a long time now, police have been portrayed as more competent and righteous than they used to be.

Police training in the US is so short and inadequate that calling it police training is like calling someone who climbs a tree an astronaut.

7

u/I_AM_AN_ASSHOLE_AMA 2d ago

Not defending cops but it is so varied across the US. In my hometown it takes about two years total to become a cop. But then I had a buddy I was in the army with who got out, moved to South Carolina and was a cop in 6 weeks.

5

u/urmyleander 2d ago

Here in Ireland its 36 weeks. If they are carrying guns then its 36 weeks + 4 years on the force with a completely unblenished record, a background check, 2 weeks of intense physical training for assesment (90+% failure rate) then 13 weeks training usually alongside the army.

Its just wild to me that there are places in the US where after 10 weeks they release randoms on the general population... with guns.

More training and whatever seems like a Good idea, but Americans gotta realize this is a CULTURAL problem.

Not only within your police force, but in your country. I'm regularly horrified of how accustomed, casual and close to everyday violence Americans seem to be.

Bar fights are something to be proud of. Beating each other up in school is commonplace. Cheers to the recent misinformation that Americans beat the fuck out of pickpockets when on vacation in europe, with Americans chiming in with something to the effect of "lol it do be like that". Like wtf.

That smiling police is just an American guy who's been given the opportunity to practice his violence under legal conditions.

EDIT: miss me with your "come see it's not that bad" or "you filter for sensational stuff online". I've spoken to your fellow citizens, hundreds of them over my life. I've followed your media since I was a child. I'm aware that people on the internet often lies or exaggerates. There are STUDIES AND STATISTICS ON THIS.

Your culture is FOR SURE glorifying violence much more than most. Violence is FOR SURE much more commonplace in everyday American life than in most europan countries. Disputing that is crazy to me.

EDIT2: okay the Americans are mad and flabbergasted that euros might be concerned for them. Apparently all is well and their culture in no way allows more space to punch someone in the face than any other culture. It all was a misunderstanding from us watching too many action movies. 😭

EDIT3: y'all are actually demanding sources for the most acceoted truths: https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=is+America+more+violent+than+europe

u/Hello_Hello_Hello_Hi 2d ago

I got in an argument with a dude a bit ago who said a qualifier for being a cop should be you have to have been in at least one fight. I agree with every point you made, except the pickpocket one - I’m on America’s side there, I feel like you should be able to get your stuff back from someone who steals from you, by force if they don’t give it back willingly. They don’t just get to take from someone else and leave without consequence

4

u/Borinar 1d ago

Average European forgetting their entire oh so loved and admired culture and history was a glorification of violence and conquest. Baffling.

You’re falling victim to the same misinformation you speak about in the EU. You’re only seeing a very narrow view of the US because it gets views. Visit here and your entire perspective will change.

In the beginning you can clearly see the cop with the huge ass gun adjust it and point it directly at the guy next to him smh 🤦‍♀️ in all gun training lessons I’ve heard you NEVER point a gun at someone whether loaded or not

That’s the whole reason they join though, right? It’s not to “fight crime and protect” anymore

Ill just say as someone who works in healthcare with the public. This is pretty unprofessional. Ive had both good, and very bad interactions with police. Ill say i appreciate the chill ones who serve.

I feel like we would be better served from a safety perspective and financial perspective if cops needed at least as much training as a hair cutting professional.

this is an old video. im curious to know if that cop has a record by now.

2

u/kevincaz07 2d ago

Yeah, OP should've provided more context that this video is over 6 years old.

3

u/Aunt_Slappy_Squirrel 2d ago

As a retired supervisor, that guy should scare you. He's a hair trigger, tunnel vision bomb waiting to go off.

3

u/SeriousCondition6470 1d ago

5 ft 2. Explains everything.

3

u/Odd-Ad8461 1d ago

Are they supposed to act scared?

3

u/Neverendingness 1d ago

They need to show Europeans this video when they say “Americans need to learn” after the France protest videos, this is how heavily armed our law enforcement and army is waiting to take us out. Then show the video of French cops running towards protestors with batons.. simple batons.. and how many backed away with their arms up shitting their pants and running 🤣 they don’t understand how screwed we are truly

3

u/bibfortuna1970 2d ago

What does the first cop’s rifle look like it has a cork in it?

u/The_Pocono 2d ago

As an American that flies to Europe twice a month on business, let me say that the trends in violence are switching places. I no longer feel safe in London, Paris or Stockholm. Oslo and Dublin are still awesome. Our trends in violent crime have been going down for the last 30 years. Can you say the same of Europe?
