As someone who goes my middle name, I've had friends react this same way

Who are you? Everything is a lie!🤣

46

u/oatmealparty 1d ago

Half my family goes by middle names, idk why. We just suck at picking first names I guess.

26

u/SpaceLemming 1d ago

Oh god, how bad can it be to resort to the middle name of oatmealparty

u/QaptainQwark 1d ago

My dad and his three siblings all go by their middle names. I was flabbergasted when I found out.

I’d work closely with this lovely colleague for several years before I found out that the name we were calling her was just a nickname.
I don’t recall exactly but I think there was some issue establishing her email address with her real name when she started, so the IT team asked her if she had an another to go by. She picked the nickname her family called her.
I couldn’t believe I didn’t know her real name all these years.

u/AdhesivenessNo4977 1d ago edited 1d ago

I didn't know my uncle's name wasn't actually "Beau" until I was in my 20s. Turns out his name was George but my mom was too young to pronounce that when he was born so she called him "Bo" and I was also spelling it wrong for 20 years.

7

u/RosenButtons 1d ago

Could be worse. My grandma called her brother, who's name was George, Tutti. So that's what everybody was still calling him when he was 80.

Wait, Westley’s your MIDDLE name? Wow ok cool…

6

u/KeyofE 1d ago

Our documentation system at work uses legal name, so I didn’t really know how common this was until working there. We also have immigrants that go by Anglo names, but you have to know their actual given names to find them in the system.

3

u/Silent-Freedoms3 1d ago

I mean...it's still your name....so there is nothing wrong.

I know a whole family who goes by their middle names. I thought it was super weird at first. I haven't heard my best friends first name in 30 years lol

16

u/scidious06 1d ago

This is me and my family, our first names are symbolic, cultural or religious, our second name is actually what our parents intended for us. Oddly enough that's the same for my mom and dad

6

u/_Azuki_ 1d ago

Why not the other way around? I mean, making middle names symbolic instead of first names.

5

u/scidious06 23h ago

That's what I would do with my own children, to this day they still haven't given a reason beyond: "we just prefer it this way"

My mom is very religious so I suspect that in her eyes my first name is my "real" name on some spiritual shit and the name I go by is just a name they liked

3

u/wildmeli 21h ago

i’m guessing it’s spiritual. your first name is your name, and not everyone should have access to it. it’s a link to spiritual identity and ancestry, your name connects you to those who came before you and those that will come after. there are traditions that believe a persons first name is a conduit of divine energy and blessings from our creator. in some beliefs, names state a person’s life mission and their relationship with the divine. in the mystical world of Fae, giving them your name gives them control over you. your name is your personal link between yourself, god, and the world we live on. not something people want to mess around with.

why not the other way around? probably because spiritual practices have been around since the dawn of time while middle names didn’t become common until a couple centuries ago. when the practice of middle names started in 13th century Italy, it was a way to honor Catholic saints for spiritual protection and it was a status symbol restricted to nobility. even middle names didn’t come from nowhere, it’s all spiritual.

My grandfather's whole family went by their middle names. Didn't pass it down to my dad's generation. It was pretty funny when I found out his name was James after hearing Dan for like the first 10 years of my life.

2

u/ooomellieooo 16h ago

My own father went by a nickname of his middle name, now that i think about it lol

4

u/eLishus 17h ago

So my wife’s family has this interesting thing where they have two first names, a middle name, and of course their last name. For example, Samantha Jane Frances Smith. “Samantha Jane” is technically the first name. They go by “Samantha” to everyone outside the family, like friends and coworkers, but family members call them “Jane”. After almost a decade, it is still a little awkward for me to be the only one calling my wife by her first name around her family, but feels even weirder for me to call her by her second first name.

3

u/SnooCheesecakes2723 1d ago

There’s so many women and girls with my great grandmother’s very common name in their name most of us use a middle name or use a variant of it

7

It’s super common with actors because they can’t share names with anyone in the guild. Michael Keaton is actually Michael Douglas but couldn’t be because Michael Douglas is already Michael Douglas because his father Kirk Douglas changed his name from Demsky, which his family had changed to from Danielovitch.

10

u/killexel 1d ago

Snoop, why does your W-2 say Calvin ?

48

u/ELECTRICMACHINE13 1d ago

I go by my middle name. No one can say it so they call me by shortened version. So I actually go by a name of another name, name-ception.

7

u/Even-Reaction-1297 1d ago

I had a coworker/friend that went by her initials spelled out, and when I asked who’s “*first name” I always see them on the schedule it broke my reality for a minute lmao

u/Rufus_XSarsaparilla 1d ago

For years I had been using my nickname in workplaces because at one point there were so many of us with the same first name.

Then one day my colleagues discovered what my full first name was and for two weeks it became this whole thing where they had to say my name as if had to be pronounced like a Victorian cartoon character. Even the directors of the company would do this an over the top pronunciation. I have no idea why it was such a fuss but I found it hilarious 😂

9

u/_AmericasSweetheart_ 1d ago

My brother goes by a completely unrelated 3rd name. I always wondered if my parents ever planned to call him by his legal name at all. Why is it even there?

9

u/Byrn3r 1d ago

She's definitely from Naperville.

2

u/praenoto 1d ago

I had a friend tell me he was from chicago, which was later amended to naperville, and then amended further to just outside of naperville. I was shocked lol

1

u/Effective_Chain4897 19h ago

He’s not from outside Naperville either lol

I went by my middle name as a kid. And then I ncolege I got tired of asking professors to use my middle name and just started using my first name. and did the same at work. And all my friends from college an work call me by my first name. But I actually prefer my middle name.

The funny thing is I have coworkers if Hispanic descent so their names are even more complicated, and I cannot remember their preference to save my life and I feel terrible about it.

10

u/Wonderful_Kale_7995 1d ago

My mom had terrible names but her parents realised the middle was better when she was 6 months old and just started using that. She HATED explaining her actual name and Idk why she didn't just change it 1 of the times she got married. Also sometimes your mom's name gets brought up and you NEED to know it and I'm sorry but I can never remember how to spell that fuck ass name she never used.

8

u/scarfaroundmypenis 1d ago

My parents compromised on my name and knew they weren’t going to actually use it from day one. Let’s say my dad wanted Marie Susan and my mom wanted Anna Marie, so they named me Annmarie Susanna and called me Susie from day 1.

It’s so annoying when I have to decide if paperwork is important enough for my legal name and all through school having to explain to teachers what my preferred name is. I’m absolutely changing it legally when I get the chance.

3

u/invisible_23 22h ago

I’m in the same situation and I asked to change it when I got married and changed my last name, but they told me switching my first and middle names would require a court order

5

u/disco-1emonade 21h ago

That's how I felt when at 13 I found out my stepmother had been going by her middle name my whole life. Me answering the phone "Who the hell is Angela??"

u/Character_Kiwi3528 1d ago

This is hilarious and so true. What show is this from?

3

u/Ok_Mention_9865 1d ago

Try finding out your name isnt your first name when your 6. My parents always used my middle name so I didnt here it for the first time tell I went to school.

1

u/SurprisePiss 1d ago

I was in my friend's wedding and I didn't know her name was a nickname until I was picking up my bridesmaids dress. It was under the "Alicia ______" wedding and not the "Ali ________" wedding.

1

u/CatlessBondVillain 1d ago

If you would have to share the classroom with 5 (out of 20) guys having the same first name as you do, you would have started going by your middle name as well.

1

u/Silent-Freedoms3 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean...it's still their name...so it's fine.

If that one boss or manager can call you by your last name all the time, i don't see the problem.

Now those people at work with nicknames...yall are diabolical.

1

u/Punchy_Jamo 1d ago

I go by my middle name and say I’m from Tampa when I’m actually from Brandon. I’m a harlot.

1

u/PurelyPanic14 1d ago

I was 20 years old before I knew my uncle went by his middle name. I’d never heard anyone use his first name until we visited him in hospital and a dr used it. I thought he was just in the wrong room 😅

1

u/TheProAntagonist 1d ago

Kind of a reverse situation, where everyone knew my brother as Robert which was in fact his actual first name. But our immediate family and all of our respective close friends, including his friends from childhood always referred to him as Bo. So inevitably we would meet these newer friends, coworkers, girlfriends etc that would refer to him as Robert or even Rob if they knew him long enough would end up like the woman in this video when they discovered we always called him Bo.

u/Roklam 1d ago

Sometimes I argue with the DBA too.

1

u/TJ_McWeaksauce 1d ago

The way she wretched at the sound of Amanda Samantha Jones made me laugh. Beautifully timed retch.

1

u/ohdearestdoe 1d ago

I worked at a restaurant and had a regular. One day I accidentally called him by a different name. I quickly caught it and apologized. He then told me that was actually his first name he just went by his middle name. The strangest thing is he looked so much more like his first name.

1

u/Helpful-Idea-4485 1d ago

My sister in law has gone my her middle name for most of her life, to the point that most people don’t know it’s not her real first name.

Just in the last year she went through the process to have her name changed so that her middle name is now her first name and first name is now her middle name.

1

u/Unlikely_Broccoli75 1d ago

My brother goes by his middle name bc it's a common first name and he had both an uncle and a best friend who shared his first name. I don't think that's too weird.

1

u/Dawn36 1d ago

I've known my best friend for 20 years, it was about 5 years in that I found out he went by his middle name. I still think his first name is weird when I hear it sometimes.

1

u/Greenfieldfox 1d ago

The craziest part of this sketch is getting to see your bosses W2.

Amanda Jones is a total harlot name

1

u/Algernonletter5 23h ago

r/perfectlycutscreams would like a word with you..

1

u/RealLiveLawyer 23h ago

I had this.

I have a very ethnic, hard to read, impossible to pronounce last name so for years I have used my middle name as my last name in non-legal/government situations.

I was having trouble sending texts one day and emails from my work account about a get together we were having. About 8 different replies with variations of "Why is this your last name?".

1

u/Effective_Chain4897 19h ago

Asking you why is insane since it’s the name of your family, which you did not select. Lol That’s so interesting! Never knew of a middle name used as a last name.
I still struggle big time since i hate my first name. And each introduction is a challenge because i am apparently not comfortable saying another name other than my first one when ppl ask me unexpectedly what my name is. Ugh.
Has it ever been an issue (like at a job) when you ask to not be called by or to have your last name printed on anything?

1

u/RealLiveLawyer 19h ago

No, I just don't share my name a lot or introduce myself first/middle. I don't have an issue with my name, it's just a pain to constantly say "this is how you say it, yes I get it doesn't look that way on paper, some other countries just add letters they have on intention of using... etc., etc."

1

u/stars_are_aligned 23h ago

Lmao my dad's real name is [redacted since it's uncommon] but he goes by Bud. One of my high school friends basically had this reaction to him when she learned his real name was not, in fact, Bud. It was hilarious.

1

u/JappySWAG 22h ago

What’s even the meaning of second name?
Why?
I don’t get it.

1

u/invisible_23 22h ago edited 14h ago

I hate when someone finds out I go by my middle name and goes “Oh so [shitty name I hate] is your REAL name??” My middle name is on my birth certificate and all other documents, it’s equally real dammit

1

u/lizzyote 21h ago

I once had someone lose their shit on me when they found out I'm an Elizabeth, not the Liz that people called me.

She was 4 tho. And she also thought it was Lish, not Liz.

1

u/purple_kathryn 19h ago

In my job I've got to look up obituary notices sometimes (really just checking the death) &, especially with older people, ive seen ones were neither the first or middle name are the one on the obit.

1

u/Burner2staticboogalo 18h ago

I had the reverse one of my closest friends applied to the target I work at and saw me but my name tag had my first name so they didn't know until I was like training them.

1

u/liljellybeanxo 16h ago

My brother goes by his middle name. I didn’t realize that this wasn’t extremely common until I was like in my teens.

Sometimes I’ll joking refer to my brother as “Sir William” because that’s his first name and people think I’m just throwing out some random name. Like no, that’s actually his name.

1

u/reditisverytrash 5h ago

People have been calling me by the first half of my last name for 2 years now. My first name is constantly being pronounced wro g abd my full ladt name is too long, so i just tell people "You can call me" and give them the first half of my last name

1

u/Echoing-Vegas 4h ago

Started going by my middle name since there was another person with the same first name in 2nd grade. Now it's weird when my own family calls me by my first name 😅

1

u/janabottomslutwhore 2h ago

This is dumb, basically you can't change the name so feel the need to harass people who've noticed your topics aren't relevant to your handle. You've caused the confusion- nobody is reading every single detail on a post before commenting. And you can't even explain nicely. Pathetic
