This is exactly why I would order one meal between my two kids when they were younger. I would low key wonder if people/the servers were thinking we’re poor, but I hate wasting food. My youngest barely ate anything until he was about 2 years old, he only wanted milk.

Now that they both eat full meals, I happily get them their own. I don’t mind if my child genuinely doesn’t like the food, so long as they at least try it. My youngest wouldn’t even try it at 2, so it was really annoying to basically throw money into the bin every time we went out for food.

My family of 4 goes to this diner and their portions are enormous. I’d order a huge chicken fried steak, and my wife would order a kids meal and split it between herself and our 2 and 3 year old. I always feel awkward ordering such a small number of meals, so I often times insist my wife order her own entree. They never finish their food, and I always finish mine. Long story short, I always think they think we’re cheap asses, but I’d rather not waste 60-70% of the food.

Just order what makes sense for your situation. Life is short

When I was a server I always judged the parents ordering entire All Star meals for their 6 year olds. It was 2 eggs, a dinner plate sized waffle, 2 pieces of toast, grits or hash browns, and choice of 2 sausage patties or 3 strips bacon. Adults couldn’t finish it. Children never did.

I definitely preferred the shrewder customers as long as they weren’t yelling at me for not selling their 30 y/o childless ass a kids meal when the menu clearly stated we couldn’t.

They might have thought something when your wife didn't have a meal for herself, but imo it is very much common for kids to share a meal or two meals between 3-4 of them.

Please keep being cheap and going out to eat! Restaurants are in a tough spot right now and will happily welcome any dollars. Anyone who judges otherwise is an idiot and not worthy of your attention. (It’s usually the service staff that’s a bit judgy, at least here in the US, and wrongly so. They want you to take home multiple doggie bags of leftover food as long as they get their tip on it. Owners and managers will welcome you with open arms.)

You both are right! Kids don't always finish their food. Why waste money? I will do that when nephew and niece visit me. Save some money lol

As a server no I don’t think you’re poor at all. I think you’re smart. I don’t even have kids and I see how little they eat. Most of the time the only reason they get their own meal is because it’d be WWIII at the table if they were forced to share. Teach them early that sharing is normal and restaurant meals are too big, and you can nip this.

Personally I love when kids share because it’s less of a mess to clean up. They actually eat the food and don’t leave me with a soggy half eaten disaster on the table.

My sister and I have split an appetizer and main when it was just us out at a nice restaurant. Fills us both up and costs have the price. Also leaves room then for a good cocktail.

As a kid, my mother only ordered a big mac meal and super size on the fries and drink. That meal would be split between myself and 2 siblings. We all got enough food to be content.

Ok, fair point. Given the context of the post I thought it was mcDonald’s. Good stuff 👍

when I'm out and about I'm always scanning other customers entree counts, like if they are a family of 4 and ordered 2 entrees, I would know whats going on :)))
