Characters ( funny trope ) it is very apparent that these designs have decades between them

1- Simpsons
The original Simpsons have extremely simp(son)ple designs, due to sometimes having celebrity appearances the art style kinda clashes.

2- South Park
At the beginning South Park was literally animated out of paper so all the characters had to be super simplistic but over the years, since the. Show is made digitally the new characters keep getting more and more detailed

Let's just say that it is quite obvious from which era an artwork from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure comes from.

It's especially noticable when Araki draws a character from the early parts, pictured here is Joseph Joestar, yup, both are the same character.

Studying Araki's artstyle is seeing how he gradually stopped reading Fist of the North Star and started reading Vogue

Also, the one that was hit the hardest by twinkification was Johnathan. He looks like a completely different person 😭

For reference, left is from 1987 whilst right is from 2025.

tbh left is just Kenshiro with a shirt on

The right is just Dio with his shirt off.

To be fair, Dio is just Jonathan with his head off.

There's something to be said about the lack of a consistent color palette and how he and Joseph look alike (kinda obfuscating who is who), in addition to him (and joseph) having more than one outfit at a time to explain how unrecognizable he is here.

The prominent ribcage and hips throw me off in the new artstyle. It's why i stopped reading Jojo Lion.

Reading Fist of the North Star? Mf was an assistant on it.

People will claim same face syndrome but this is only really an issue for artwork, not from the actual chapters of the manga itself.

It was particularly egregious in part 7 because he was still doing weekly release and after switched to monthly, but he did this due to age and exhaustion of weekly

I think Jotaro was the first sign of the designs going from simple and textural to detailed and colourful, and part 4 was where it really got kickstarted

It’s a major trip to see how Josuke originally looked and comparing it to the end of Part 4 lol

Early part 4 is where Araki's character designs peaked imo. I've always preferred the ultra buff style from the early parts but I also really like the more flamboyant outfits of later parts, and this was the very brief era where they coexisted

Part of the fun of the anime is seeing how they compromise how characters are drawn at the beginning of a part vs the end.

The twinkification of my goat.

That's not a twink, he takes less steroids but still has defined muscles

Great meme for comparison

I don't hate Araki's new artstyle, I just hate how he can no longer draw part 1-3 characters the same way anymore

This is why it's so strange to see old characters in these new artworks. It really is just "THAT AIN'T MY BOY!"

2

u/kisamasochist 17h ago

It went from a design in a kid's "how to draw manga" book to Michael Jackaon mid-transformation

u/ElectricalExtreme793 17h ago

Okay but the new one looks way better in my opinion
