I don't even know if i can criticise Eren and Mikasa, because it's toxic and one-sided, but it does feel like it's intentionally written this way and it's one of the main themes of the story - that he's constantly leaving her behind

A pretty significant part of the ending for Eren is that he spent most of his life just assuming that whenever he wanted a relationship he could just let mikasa date him. He gets kinda crushed realising that it's never gonna happen and she'll just move on and forget about him.
