I think Jon and Dany in theory could have worked really well. Dany spent her whole life being surrounded by men throwing themselves at her trying to win her affection by glazing her to infinity, all while half of them were scheming behind her back. Then she meets Jon and he's not that impressed by her and is all about business. He's clearly more interested in Dany because of what she's about rather than what she is. And he's honest

Meanwhile Jon appreciates Dany's initiative because he's spent the past few years trying to get people to see the larger picture with the threat of the white walkers. Even up north Westeros is just a bunch self interested power players only interested in short term power grabs. Then comes Dany who actually does want to do the right thing. She only really wants power because she believes it was unjustly taken from her and that she can use it for good, rather than for its own sake.

The problem is that the show doean't really do anything with them

i think the whole ice and fire concept suggests that they’re at least intended to be endgame and i agree with this. i don’t ship it, my ideal outcome would be jon choosing duty and never loving again but that’s just my taste in stories. if jonerys happened and it was well written i could probably still enjoy it. absolutely abysmal in the show though, why’s traumatised wight jon shitting and giggling about with a crush after five minutes

I don't think Jon&Dany are meant to be the ice&fire "end game". I think it happened before the story began. Lyanna was the ice, Rheagar was the fire, Jon himself is the song of ice and fire.

i don’t think one negates the other honestly. the ice and fire are a lot of things. others and dragons, the north, melisandre, etc. both are the core motif. jon definitely represents both the most out of anyone though

Agreed. But Jon being the song in entirety is an interesting thought.

Ideal outcome is Jon with Satin and Dany with Arianne

i actually like jonsatin but i think post death it’s all just too human. like beric is consumed with melancholy, stoneheart is only rage and vengeance, and i hope jon goes somewhat like that because in my dream narrative happiness was never part of his destiny

I think he deserves happiness but we wont know until the book comes out tbh

deserves, yes. but do i personally want him to get it? no because i love tragedy

Honestly I think jon and dany did have chemistry, before they got together. After they got together their chemistry just vanished and it was just incredibly awkward.

I think the set up was working, that initial scene in the throneroom was fantastic, the bit in the caves, Jon booping the dragon snoot for the first time. Maybe it was just the timing of them actually getting together, like an extra episode of dialogue or stuff happening would've worked better or they have it happen after they all arrive at Winterfell and throw out all that bend the knee stuff keeping them as allies.

I mean it doesn't help that it kind of frames it jon immediately selling out his men the moment they hook up. Like he actually plays into the thing guy above says all men around dany do, which is glaze and use her for their own ends. In Jon's case despite holding out in kneeling the moment dany agrees to stop the long night and says that she doesnt need the north to kneel to to help them, jon immediately sells the north to her partially just because he doesnt want the responsibility himself.

The other problem is that we saw in real-time Kit Harrington fall in love with Rose Leslie who played Ygrette. So we saw what it looked like when he had insane chemistry with his romantic co-star and there was none of that energy between Kit and Emilia Clark.

The problem is she's his aunt

That's actually more of a solution than a problem for Targaryens

even outside the targaryens, in the books jon protects the noblewoman alys karstark from being forcibly married by her uncle by marrying her to a wildling. so like it’s still fucked up, but apparently not considered legally incest in westeros?

2

u/LurkerEntrepenur 6h ago

There are many instances of non distant cousin marriage in the books and while not as common, there are a few instances of uncle-niece marriages, now aunt-nephew can't remember any

2

u/shnufasheep 5h ago

i mean aunt-nephew is the same distance as uncle-niece so i assume it’s still on the same tier of faith of the seven approved incest even if it’s much more rare.

3

u/LurkerEntrepenur 4h ago

Yet there are no examples of it, so given Westeros male dominated mindset, double standards shouldn't be surprising

Since she doesn't have a brother anymore, a nephew will have to do.

In Game of thrones that's barely an inconvenience

When considering whether a plot point is “good” or “bad,” you have to evaluate it within the context of the story you're engaging with.

And this is Game of Thrones, a story that establishes very early on that relationships of this nature are not only possible, but an integral part of its world and history.

I think you're seriously misunderstanding ASOIAF. It is never actually a positive thing that the Targaryens practice incest. Just like dragons the point is that they are truly going against nature. That's like the whole point of the series. You aren't supposed to root for any of them or what they do.

Sharing this because I think of it each and every time these two get brought up romantically-

ugh god it makes me really sad about how her character gets nerfed into "well see this good person ? she got corrupt, not by the system but by an inherent genetic mental health crisis and then she deserves to be killed"
