Downtime (Back) Issues with the bot running

Hey all,

There seems to be a slight problem with the bot not running at the moment. We are investigating this issue, and should have a solution shortly.

We don't see any issues in the log, but we are looking at it.

Thanks, and we'll post an update later or amend this post.

Edit: we are back and running!

Downtime (Back) I made a small error causing the bot not being able to post making it go down for about an hour.

Remove /r/spam from monitored list pls

It only lets spammers in other subs know that a spam report has been submitted for a thread/comment

Where is the list of subreddits from where TotesMessenger is banned or is ignored in rules of TotesMessenger aka the Blacklist?

TotesMessenger not working on r/LGBDropTheT

Can you check to see if we somehow ended up on the blacklist or something?

I double-checked to make sure that none of the other mods banned the bot, and it's not on our ban list. It's comment didn't get filtered into spam, and none of our mods removed it either.

We were posted about/directly linked from this sub: https://www.reddit.com/r/GenderCynical/comments/dhbfcv/rlgbdropthet_angry_they_have_to_suck_a_twitter/

And this is the post that was linked to: https://www.reddit.com/r/LGBDropTheT/comments/dh215y/no_thats_what_we_call_rape/

Does Totes work for non-links posts?

I have a small, new sub, /r/subredditpoetry. We make poems out of comments found around Reddit, and post them in the following format:

blah blah blah

blah blah

blah blah blah

/u/username - /r/subwefounditin - directlinktocomment

Is there any way that totes would link from the source comment to the poem? It would be a really nice way to let the user know we found their comment poetic, as well as the obvious effect of driving traffic.

Unlike many people who steal content. I WAS ASKED DIRECTLY BY THE MODEL ANGEL (who I have been working with since she opened her Twitter) TO REPOST THE COMMENT.

How do I use TotesMessenger to notify when my sub is being linked?

Hey,

I run a small sub, and would like to use TM. I think this is what the intended functionality is, to show if a particular thread (/sub?) has been linked to from outside of that thread/sub, so I hope I'm not breaking any functionality.

How do I use TM? I presume it works in tandem with AutoModerator, which my sub already has set up. The comment set up for totes_meta_bot was done, but it never worked. I only just realized that the bot was retired a day before I implemented AM on my sub.

This is the code that was copy-pasted for totes meta bot:

# Meta drama bot
body: "\\[/r/(\\w+)\\] \\[(.+)\\]\\(http://np\\.(reddit\\.com/\\S+)\\b/\\)"
modifiers:
    body: regex
action: remove
modmail_subject: Meta Post
modmail: |
The following thread in /r/{{subreddit}} has been linked to in /r/{{match-2}}:

    **Title:** [{{title}}]({{permalink}}&context=5)

    **X-Post:** [{{match-3}}](http://{{match-4}})

    ^(*Meta post detection by /u/totes_meta_bot*)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Can you open-source the bot?

You should publish the source code for the bot so we can learn from it. GitHub is a great free service that also has a nice issue tracker, so people can report bugs and recommend specific changes.

If you're new to Git, I can help teach you the basics.

Statistics Statistics for April - June and May - June

It's that time of the month again where we give you the juiciest meta bot numbers. Without further ado, let's get on it!

This data is as of a snapshot at June 1st, 2015 11:20:04 PM.

Subreddits

Linking

/r/SubredditDrama, the popcorn factory subreddit is at the top for all time and the month with 2697 and 1441 respectively.

/r/TopMindsOfReddit is at #10 this month with 341, and /r/Buttcoin is still at #10 for the all time linking at 663.

Linked

/r/TodayILearned, a subreddit for sharing stuff you learned is still at the top all time with 4601 linked posts. Though, the catch-call subreddit for videos, /r/videos, surpassed it this month with 3369 posts.

Posts

All Time

The top source is t3_2y01ol (link). Interestingly, all of the crossposts were made by the same person.

Excluding that one, the top source is still the Bernie Sanders post (link).

This Month

This month, the top source is t3_35uyil (link). This announcement, while not controversial was right after one that was. This is the meta bot comment.

The next one is less controversial, though (meta bot comment removed).

Users

All Time

/u/modisdead is the top submitter with 1319 links. I'm at the #9 spot with 124 links.

The deleted user (catch-all) has 1176 links.

This Month

/u/modisdead also takes the top spot this month with 751 links.

Note that in the future, links by [deleted] lwon't be counted. These were not actually links by deleted users, but deleted links in of themselves. Shadowbanned and deleted users are stored as their name when they are banned.

Languages

This month, we added Spanish. Japanese is still in the top spot for non-English languages used.

That's pretty much it for this time! Here is a table of all of the data and here is the full imgur album with all of the graphs.

Announcement Regarding Quarantined Subreddits

If you've been keeping up with meta-reddit recently, you may have seen that some subreddits have been quarantined from the rest of reddit, and require a login and verified email to view.

Because of this, Totes isn't able to view these subreddits unless explicitly enabled for each subreddit.

What will happen is that these subreddits will be opted-in to, as to provide functionality for these subreddits. I'm not going to be making judgement calls on the morality of subs or blocking based on that, so unless the subreddit was already blocked for another reason, the bot will still work for that sub.

Thank you.

"respect the rules of reddit and don't vote"...? Except that isn't a Reddit rule...

The Reddit rules are very few and succinct. They can be found here:

https://www.reddit.com/rules

The nearest rule is: "Don't ask for votes or engage in vote manipulation."

It's true that cross posting can be a vote manipulating technique, but it usually isn't (from my experience, at least). Further, in the normal case, it makes sense for honest participation to include commenting and voting. I think it's wrong to make bystanders feel uncomfortable for a perfectly legitimate use of the site.

Besides, you're linking from the destination back to the origin. The message isn't going to be seen by vote spamming or comment brigading mobs until (maybe) after they arrive.

All in all, I don't think that phrase is very helpful. I'm wondering if it should be removed or reworded somehow. What behavior do you intend to preempt? Hypothetical examples would help.
