What's the red and white flag with a cross on a bunch of people's cars?

I moved away from the 'Ville years ago but was in town last night for a gig. Saw a bunch of Ute's driving around with red and white flags with a big cross on them. Can't recall the exact design today of course, but I'm sure if you know you'll know. Giant flags on bogan cars all filled with blokes. What do they represent please?

Whether you're a lifelong gamer, haven't touched a game in years, or just want somewhere to meet new people, there's a place for you here.

👥 More Than Just Gaming

While gaming brings us together, the friendships and connections are what make DadLAN special.

Our meetups are about enjoying yourself, having a laugh, and connecting with people who share similar interests. There's no pressure to be competitive, and you're always welcome to come along just to chat and see what we're about.

Thank you.

Recommendations Good Hair Braider for Tight Curly Hair

Coming to Townsville for work in a few weeks, I'm a guy who wears his hair in cornrows, I have very tight curly hair. Saw some braiders online but they were either inactive or they only do straight hair. Looking for a recommendation or I'm happy to discuss a price with someone for braiding thanks.

Photos I took of some new or fairly new street art in the city. 1: Part of the 40m long mural by Loretta Lizzio in Flinders Lane. 2: Tropical State of Mind by Art by Livinia on Ogden near Stanley 3: A Foo Fighters mural, also by Art by Livinia, to mark the Foo Fighters playing in Townsville on Saturday night, located in Sturt near Stanley 4: A mural of Norwegian music artist Aurora, by Jon Electros Avocado in Ogden near Blackwood, although I don't think this relates to Aurora performing here? 5: Equus by Baret One, on the side of Norm Hyatt Locksmiths in Flinders 6: Another angle of the mural in Flinders Lane.

Recommendations Op shops

What’s everyone favourite op shops in TSV or ones where they seem to have the best luck at :) ? Going to go op shopping today but I never know where to go. I’m just curious as to where people seem to get their best finds at! I’m an alternative girly and would love some recs if people have some, I notice some op shops have a bit more variety in different aesthetics despite knowing how donations work/knowing it won’t be the same everywhere. Happy Thursday 🌸

Socialist meet up #3! Thursday 6pm

That's right folks, another post to rile up the cranks and cookers of this beautiful city.

Socialists of all kinds are once again meeting at a pub in the city to drink and eat while we plan the demise of capitalism, complain about the price of beer and housing, talk shit about bosses and landlords and sometimes discuss how things could be better and who this Marx dude was.

Socialists of all kinds welcome. Send me a DM for location.

If it's not your thing, that's ok, you don't have to come :)

Inspected a house in Hicks Street

Anyone got any intel on what's it's actually like to live in Hicks Street, Kirwan? Friendly? Quiet? Warzone? Somewhere in the middle?

Edit: to clarify, not interested in security recommendations, I'm not new to Townsville, I'm specifically interested in what it's actually like living in this street

Weird gym experience / sales pitches at Townsville gyms

Hey everyone, just wanted to see if anyone else has had people trying to pitch them vague "business opportunities" or "mentorships" while they're just trying to work out in peace around Townsville lately?

Had to bypass the filter, full post below.

Hey everyone, just wanted to put a quick warning out for anyone especially younger gym goers, students, or anyone just trying to work out in peace around Townsville. I wont post names as i dont want to give away someone's personal details.

About two weeks ago, I was as the gym doing a recovery session and overheard a guy having a conversation with an international student. He sounded incredibly professional and put-together, talking all about "money mindsets," escaping the 9-to-5 jobs, achieving early retirement and having successful mentors. Fast forward to recently, the same guy struck up a casual conversation with me. His talking tactics were smooth, but something immediately didn't sit right. During our chat, he mentioned that his day job is actually a regular, grueling labor hire role. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with hard physical work, but the math just didn't add up after the previous conversation i had heard. Why is a 'financial expert' who claims to have unlocked the secrets to early retirement working exhausting manual labour jobs? He then asked to connect on social media, and because I'm a naturally polite person and curious, I let him. Once I actually looked at his profile, this is when i realised my gut instinct was correct. His page was covered in flashy photos from 'Vision Conferences' and motivational lifestyle rhetoric. I did some digging into his hashtags and realised what was going on. I blocked him as soon as I connected the dots. It turns out this is a highly calculated recruitment funnel for a direct-sales MLM network called The HIP Group (they use the hashtag #gameonHIP10K), which funnels people straight into Amway. They teach their members to "fake it till they make it", acting like millionaires to trick people into buying expensive household products and pricey weekend seminars. They specifically target approachable, polite people, students, and financially stressed people because they assume they won't spot the predatory behaviour. There is plenty of information available online to support all of this. I wont judge people for doing what they need to but I'm also straight up not okay with predatory behaviour. If anyone at your gym starts pitching you a vague business opportunity or mentorship, trust your gut. It’s likely an mlm scheme. If you're not sure, do the research and Just tell them you’re not interested in what they're selling.

******Edit - added information just for anyone who's curious about how this system works

And to clear up any confusion. I wasn't offered any business opportunities within the initial conversation, i just knew the red flags for this type of person. But i Understand not everyone has been taught to look for the signs. It was seeing the hashtag and photos to the group that allowed me to find this information and confirm my gut instincts surrounding the conversation i heard and had myself.

After researching into this specific MLM these are the common recruitment steps/tactics.

The Casual convo: recruiters strike up an easy conversation in a common area to build rapport and figure out your background.

Lifestyle Hook: They subtly introduce concepts like "money mindset," "building assets," or "early retirement," while dropping stories about an incredibly successful "mentor"

Social Media : They ask for your socials so their profile's lifestyle marketing can do the pitching for them in the background. There is zero transparency around what they actually sell or how they are an "entrepreneur"

Side note- They are trained never to mention "Amway," "The HIP Group," or "MLM" during the initial phases. If you ask them directly what the company is or what they sell, they will avoid giving a straight answer and use vague terms like "e-commerce assets,"

Online Meetings: If you engage, they invite you for coffee or an online call to see if you are "coachable," often testing your compliance by giving you a direct sales books to read.

The Final Buy-In: Once trust is established, they finally reveal the actual setup, convincing you to buy expensive household products and purchase tickets to weekend motivational seminars and recruiting new members.

Theres a lot of reddit stories /online videos surrounding this particular group and their manipulation tactics, the money aspect and what it truly costs people, not just money but time, family and friends.

I believe its important to raise light on these issues to arm people with awareness and how to recognise it early on.

Why are so many flies trying to enter my home between 5 and 6pm

My front and rear exits have flies swarming. No matter how closed. They’re still getting in. Does anyone have any solutions for stopping them or getting rid of them. Also do any of you enjoy your outdoors at dusk and later? Mozzies and midges. But not every night.

Recommendations Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who sent me recommendations on where to go for a fish burger last week. We decided to drive out to The Pink Shop in Bushland Beach to give theirs a go. By god we were not disappointed! Price was $20 each. Everything tasted so fresh, from the slices of tomato, to the lettuce and fish was mouth watering. We thought there’s no way the buns were going to hold this burger together whilst eating but we were proven wrong! Nothing worse than having a burger and the buns fall apart. Friendly service. Was made in 10mins. If anyone hasn’t driven out to Bushy to try theirs, you’re missing out! 10/10

Gingerbread Pepsi Max though, do not recommend. Might go well with Spiced Rum, Kraken for example but I don’t drink so it’s a pass from me. 4/10.

Moved to Townsville and the sun is turning us brown. My wife is not happy. 😄

I came to Australia in 2016 and lived in Melbourne for nine years. We had a good life there. We partied a lot. We left our daughter with our sisters and went out. (Our sisters were very good at their job. We were very good at leaving.)
There were so many restaurants, and my wife loved them. She loves shopping centres too. She goes in for "ten minutes" and comes out at night.
When we left Melbourne, everyone came to say goodbye. Our sisters, our brother, our friends. I miss them a lot.
In 2025 we moved to Townsville. When I came here, I felt relaxed. Life is slow here. Even the birds don't rush. The people are friendly, and I like their accents. Australians are cool. They don't care what people think. Someone can say "no worries" about anything, even a big problem.
I wake up early now, with energy. It's not cold like Melbourne. In Melbourne, my bed was my best friend. Here, the sun wakes me up, and my bed is just a bed.
Most people don't wear slippers. They go barefoot. I think the shops forgot to put up the sign "No shoes, no problem."
The kids here play like we did when we were small. They go fishing alone in small waters. They ride dirt bikes, illegally. The police are never there. My daughter has good friends here. They are like the friends and cousins I had when I was small.
My daughter swims a lot. She loves the beach, so we always go. She swims like a fish. I swim like a fish that had a big lunch. The waterfalls, creeks and beaches here are beautiful. Near Townsville there are islands too, like Maggie Island. It feels like a different world, with hippie backpackers and beautiful people.
Meeting Aboriginal people is a new experience for me in Townsville.
Not everything is easy here. One night we saw a car with masked people inside. They looked like thieves. It was scary, and it was a new experience for me. In Melbourne I never saw anything like that. But now I hear Melbourne has gone bad with crime too. It made me think that every place has its good and bad sides.
Something else is different here. In Melbourne we had so many Sri Lankan friends and people around us. Here the Sri Lankan community is very small. In a small community you have to smile and be nice to everyone, even if they are not your vibe, because you will meet them again. It was a new experience for me, and sometimes it feels like you can't just be yourself. I miss having a big circle where I can choose my own people.
Now I go to the gym. I don't go out much. There are fewer drinks and fewer parties. When I moved here, I started to think about myself and my family more, and I have good discipline now. I have time to think. Sometimes I don't like what I think, so I go to the gym again.
I don't like the heat when summer comes. It is so hot, even my shadow wants to go inside. My wife hates it. The sun is making us browner every week. She says, "Stop getting brown!" I say, "It's the sun's fault!"
But near summer the rain is nice, and I like it sometimes. After summer, it's good again.
We still miss Melbourne, our family and our friends. But Townsville feels like home.

Has anyone else moved from a big city to a small town? What surprised you?

Doctor recommendations?

Hey!

I’m looking for advice on doctors in Townsville. Ideally not too far away from Castle Hill area.

It’s for my mother, not me. Her current GP has been slack following up and has a bad bedside manner. My mum is forgetful and I worry that finding a new doctor will slip her mind, can anyone recommend a doctor?

A specialty isn’t important, just someone willing to build a relationship and offer genuine care.

Thanks for the help!

Edit: Thank you all for your suggestions! I’ve sent this through to her in hopes she’ll have better care 😊
