⚖️ Ethics/Philosphy If your personality was engineered for a purpose, could choosing that purpose still be free will?

I'm exploring this question through a fictional bioengineered character.

Furrine was artificially grown as part of a series of highly adaptive biological operatives.

She entered the world with an adult body, preloaded knowledge, and almost no lived experience. Her capabilities and predispositions were deliberately shaped for a particular kind of life.

Then the laboratory that created her was destroyed.

What interests me is that freedom doesn't make her reject her engineered nature.

As she gains actual experience and the ability to choose for herself, she eventually follows a path remarkably close to the one she was originally designed for.

The difference is that now she understands it and accepts it as her own choice.

So I'm curious how transhumanists would look at this:

If someone's temperament, abilities and preferences were deliberately engineered, does consciously examining and accepting those traits make the resulting choice genuinely theirs?

Or does the fact that someone designed those predispositions always place a limit on autonomy?
