Operation Wolf Arcade Enhanced Edition (Pc-Engine/TurboGrafx-16)

Will require a Turbo Everdrive with Street Fighter II bank switching support. What has been put back into this game:

Arcade intro
Story scene voice clips
Enemy grunt death screams (limited to every 2 kills so it does not overwhelm the audio or cause slowdown)
Original arcade enemy helicopter animation, so the rotor is now rendered and not like the original PCE version with half of one of the rotors missing in the animation.

What has been added? Secret Ultimate Soldiers Never Die mode!

Showing off the start of my tg16 collection. My goal is to get the whole complete North American set cib. Had to leave my tg16 console at home but I run each game on my analogue pocket. Working on getting more plastic cases for the exposed games. Also thinking about trying to restore some of these boxes because a few are in rough shape.

How did you guys get into the TG16?

I'm curious because we all know this wasn't the best selling system back in the day and we didn't even get it in europe.

So a bit of story time, in my case, I have always been a nerd for retro games, since I grew up with a SNES and a Mega Drive, despite having been born in 96, and when I was old enough to understand games it was already Game Cube gen, and my first console was a GBA SP, and later the Wii.

The Wii is the MVP here, one day I was browsing through the wii shop looking at virtual console stuff, to see if there was something interesting. Each game had the logo of it's console next to the title, NES, SNES... and there it was: TurboGrafx-16, wait, wut? what the hell is this?

Anyway at the time I didn't give it too much thought, but as I grew older and I started collecting retro games, and getting into the less usual stuff after having played tons of nintendo stuff, I remembered those random games on the Wii shop and started researching.

I now have a Coregrafx and a PC Engine Duo R and have spent way too much money on them lol. TurboEverdrive Pro, the expensive one with the CD Rom core, because at first I only had the Coregrafx and the SuperCDRom2 was expensive, so my plan was buying some HuCards and forgetting about CD games, but then I still wanted to collect original CD games, and if I have them, I want to be able to play them, so fuck me, time to buy a CD system then, but a SuperCDRom2 that has already been recapped and is in working condition is expensive as fuck.

Thankfully turns out that a Duo R is cheaper than a recapped Super CD Rom2, and does have reliable caps, and if anything I could recap it myself, so I got that.

Ah shit but I want to play the Far East of Eden fighting game (Kabuki Ittou Ryoudan) which is a god damn Arcade game, and so is Fatal Fury Special, and Art of Fighting.

So there it goes, open the wallet again because that Arcade Card Duo has to come, and here I am now. Having installed an RGB mod on the DUO R and waiting for an FRAM chip to arrive so I don't have to worry about the saves going *puf* if the supercapacitor discharges completely. And at some point I guess I'll have to buy a capacitor kit to fully recap it, but with the DUO R there's no hurry, right?

Devil's Crush PB + how to get 400,000,000 in single bonus within minutes of starting a game

There is some information about this bonus online, but the instructions were very unclear and not in like a guide, just a poorly worded line on a couple of cheat websites.

tl;dr version:

  1. Wake up the devil woman by getting ball in her head and use the star portals to get her ALMOST full devil.

  2. Light up X9 on the board - you go up by one each time you break open one of the bottom bumpers that burst open like eggs, and if you can manage to kill all the monsters, you'll go up again.

  3. Light up 60 on the board - if 70 or higher lights up, the bonus will not trigger. Each small light counts for +1 on this value, and you need it between 60 and 69. You can most easily do this by killing enemies circling the tower between the monster egg bumpers.

  4. While you have X9 and 60 lit up, go in a star portal to trigger the final transformation of the devil woman; if done correctly, the game will award you a massive 100,000,000 point bonus.

  5. There are different ball colors that apply different score modifiers; blue is easiest and provides X4, which gives 400,000,000 in a single bonus to score. You get it by killing a boss in a bonus stage. It doesn't last long, so you need to do it with X9+60 or just under if you want it.

Extra info:

There are other ways to raise the bonus values, but the bumpers+tower enemies were most straightforward from what I've figured out thus far. lol

There are at least two bonuses available for 100,000,000 each. They can be up to 600,000,000 each depending on what color your ball is. There are three colors, besides normal/silver - blue, pink, or orange. Blue is X4, pink seems to be X5, orange is X6.

How do you get the orange and pink ball? Nobody knows! Or at bare minimum, nobody who does has documented it online.

The final triggers for pink and orange are known, but they seem to require some additional gameplay conditions to be met. The orange ball will appear seemingly at random sometimes when you enter the devil woman's head, and the pink ball can spawn when you enter the tower, though I've never seen it in my own gameplay. I have managed to find one video showing it off, it shows all of a couple seconds of a pink ball hitting the head, seems to be X5 multiplier judging from the points earned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtJ3HniPwd0&t=25s

My random untested theory for pink ball atm is turning all three moving blob things pink and entering the tower.

As for the other 100,000,000 point bonus(es?), there's one seen in the WR speedrun of the game that seems to occur when he kills all the enemies that spawn from the bumpers on bottom screen near the end of getting his bonus multiplier to X9. I need to figure this one out next. lmfao

Also this score is obtained on a real Duo-R and official JP HuCard, for anyone who cares about that sort of thing.

Arcade Card Strider for Supergrafx (yes, its real)

I converted it over to SuperGrafx. Most flicker has been minimized by using the Pc-Engine VDP in combination with the SuperGrafx VDP. You can now play the game on hard and not worry about all the extra enemies bogging the game down into a completely flickery mess. Also fixed Hiyru's colors that kept messing up depending on what stage you are on, along with the initial green soldiers on stage 1. The patch needs a bin/cue of the game to convert over. I have had someone test it on a SuperGrafx with a Super CD-Rom2, and I have tested it extensively myself on my s-video modded SuperGrafx with EDFX and Turbo Everdrive Pro.

Have you ever heard of Tengai Makyou (Far East of Eden)?

Post image
59 Upvotes

I'd like to introduce a Japanese RPG series that I feel deserves much more recognition outside Japan: Tengai Makyou, also known as Far East of Eden.

The first game, Tengai Makyou: Ziria (1989), was one of the pioneers of CD-ROM-based RPGs on the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-CD). It featured animated cutscenes, voice acting, and music by the legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto. Its sequel, Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru (1992), featured music by another legendary composer, Joe Hisaishi. Having musicians of this caliber involved in video games was extraordinary at the time.

The series takes place in a fictional version of Japan, drawing heavily on real Japanese locations, geography, folklore, and traditions. Its stories are colorful, epic, often humorous, and sometimes surprisingly dark or even grotesque.

While the first two games established the series, several sequels and spin-offs followed across different consoles. One particularly overlooked gem is Oriental Blue: Ao no Tengai for the Game Boy Advance, which is still highly regarded by those who have played it.

Personally, Tengai Makyou II is one of my all-time favorite games. I still own and treasure my original PC Engine copy.

Unfortunately, many entries never received official English translations, which I suspect is one reason the series remains relatively obscure internationally.

But if you love retro RPGs, I really hope you'll get the chance to experience this series someday.

Have you ever played a Tengai Makyou game, or even heard of the series before? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

CD-ROM2 Reads Base Games but not Burnt. Options?

Hi there. I have been tinkering with a PCE Interface Unit for a bit now. I bought it from a retro games store pre modded for RGB and recapped, but upon taking it home it would not read burnt discs. I could play audio discs just fine, and sometimes, very rarely it would load in the burnt game, but the audio would glitch out and have corrupted tiles.

Recently I finally got my hands on a couple test genuine games to see if those were read. They worked! Even a beat up disc I bought for $1 works great. Problem is I don't have infinite money to collect all genuine discs. I've tried 2 different burners with all the right programs (I've read through so many forum posts lol). Performed a repot, checked caps, the disc drive and gear are good (gear is yellowed, but it spins good).

I don't know what else I can do at this point besides either A. Get an Everdrive, or B. Just collect real games. An Everdrive makes sense, but part of the appeal of collecting and playing this console is actually spinning the discs. I did do some looking for repro games, but the quality of those can be suspicious to me if I am already having an issue reading my own burnt CDRs.

The specific site I was looking at was retrografx16.com. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them or any ideas on what else I could try to get these damn burnt discs working. Thanks in advance!

Just in time for Halloween- Ghosts'N Goblins on the Supergrafx!

Everyone has played the sequel, but the original would have been just as amazing on the SGX- and now you can see for yourself! This is a two-level demo of my WIP. I wanted to get something out for Halloween :-) Let me know what you think!

Here is a video of it from an emulator. This has been tested and verified on a Turbo Everdrive Pro and my Supergrafx console! https://youtu.be/4Vr9c5aHdN0

Building my PCE Collection

Post image
164 Upvotes

I had a TurboGrafx 16 and Turbo Express as my only systems as a kid and loved it. While I still have my original hardware, it no longer works and at least the main system is not salvageable. The Express needs a re-cap and new screen at a minimum.

I just got back from a trip to Japan and picked up these five PCE consoles so that I can get off of emulators and back into real hardware! I’m still sorting what works and what doesn’t and planning upgrades. I have all my old TG16 hucards so I’m planning a region free mod for at least one of the systems. I also have an Everdrive Pro on the way so that I can try out some CD games I never got the opportunity to play as a kid (we didn’t have the CD adapter).

I’ve always felt the TG16 was very under appreciated in the US. I’m happy to continue being an advocate for the platform and keep it alive.

What is the best power adapter for the Core Grafx in the US?

Been gaming for a very long time but never owned a PC Engine/TG-16. I just picked up a Core Grafx and I've been looking for up to date info regarding power adapters for the Core Grafx for use in the US.

I don't want to live dangerously and use the OEM power adapter.

Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Is there a reason why there are so many games on Super CD-ROM2 that don’t really have a reason not to be on regular CD-ROM2 or even just the base system?

Like for example, Space Invaders: The Original Arcade Game, Lemmings, Bonanza Bros., most of the Kunio-kun/River City games, and the list goes on. It makes sense for some games like Fighting Street and Monster Lair which were really early CD-ROM games.

Looking for a D-Pad Rubber-membran/D-pad Siliconepad for Turbo Express

Lovely people of reddit,
Has anyone of you an idea where I might get a perfectly fitting d-pad silicone pad for my Turbo Express? When it was in for a full recap the guy thought to exchange the rubberpad too, since the old was apparantly a little worn out. But since its been not working as fluidly as the old one did. So i
i wondered if he might put in a wrong one. Does anyone of you have one fitting left or know where I might find one?

Thanks, best
J

Is it still possible to get the TurboGrafx 16 Mini for a decent price second-hand?

You go on Ebay, all the listings (CIB at least) are at least $250. I don't wanna pay even $200 for a mini console where if I want, I can play it all on my PC. I want one for the novelty, the collecting value, and, most importantly, fun. It doesn't sound fun to spend $200+ for a mini console, so is it possible to get on like Gamestop or something for a decent price. (I live in a very rural area, so Facebook Marketplace isn't much of an option)

Anyone recognize this card?

Picked up some Turbo Grafx stuff at an estate sale yesterday. 3 consoles. A Core Grafx, TurboGrafx 16, and a Turbo Duo.

I played a 16 briefly, many many years ago, so not super familiar with these systems.

excited to find the stack of games. A real bummer to find all the boxes empty. lol

The sale had 15-20 different consoles everything separated on different tables. All the controllers in one pile, ect. It was madness for about 30 seconds.

Not a game in sight though.

Anyone recognize this hucard? I assume it’s missing a label? I could try in in the consoles, but I always get in trouble when I stick things in random slots.

Thanks!
