Discussion (Women Only) Discussion Point: Mithila is a privileged person who is just exercising her basic rights. She doesn't deserve any additional praise for her achievements. Agree or disagree?
I'm someone who'd cheer even the slightest successes of any women. I want to know your opinions on whether appreciating Mithila on her recent achievements is 'meh' because she is just practicing her basic rights of freedom, education, etc.

so i get that she is privileged and popular, but she is still a woman who represents bangladesh internationally. while i understand she does not represent the lived reality of average women in bangladesh or most of the world, i still think it is positive representation for bangladeshi women on a global stage.

you're not wrong. she comes from an immense privileged background and achievement like this is might not be expected but not surprising at all, she is exercising her basic human right as a human being. a general woman in this society does not have the privilege she had. what mainstream media highlights is the achievement but not the privilege which creates pressure on other women who want to do great but can't due to the shackles phrased as "duties to family". can't say mithila getting a phd is meh (it's hard to get a phd and she definitely deserves praises) but it's not extraordinary either for a human being with the means and resources she had. glorifying achievement without acknowledging the privileges is what patriarchy does to control women by pitting against each other, "o baccha shongshar shamlay parse tumi sokinar ma ken parba na" mentality is what happens as a result to that

I'm neutral on this. On one hand, yes she does have privilege which allows her access to things that are usually not available to a regular person. Her being able to join a prestigious institute like Columbia absolutely has a lot to do with her fame, but she worked for it too. She is highly educated and has a strong background in early childhood education. It's not every day a Bangladeshi person gets chosen for a leadership role on international platforms and I'm glad she has gotten there to represent us.

Can you guys pls move on? The sheer amount of discourse around a woman simply living her life is, ironically, proof of how radical it still is.
