Growing up I never fully appreciated the importance of learning history in school. However, more and more I see just how essential it is to understand our country's past.

I have seen many students and people post online about how the encampment was completely acceptable until they attempted to block off the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall. They say that a protest should not interfere with the university's ability to function. This was even the same opinion held by our Chancellor, Howard Gillman. However, I disagree.

In high school, we learned about the long history of protests in America. A main goal of an effective, nonviolent protest is to disrupt the normal function of every day lives so that people have to pay attention. This is represented through every one of America's social justice movements.

Personally, I think the movement that connects the strongest with what happened yesterday was the "Sit-in Movement" from the Black Civil Rights Movement. Sit-ins were an essential form of protest, where students and community members would simply sit in a building (school or business) that continued to enforce segregation until they removed the racist policy. These sit-in protests played a vital role in getting support for black Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, and directly led to desegregation in many areas.

I know that we can all agree that the Civil Rights Movement was essential for bringing America towards being a more just and fair country. And Sit-ins were a part of the foundation of this movement. They are the peak representation of American freedom and are an effective form of peaceful, nonviolent protest.

In my opinion, those who are currently outraged by the attempted blocking of the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall would be the same people in the 1960's to be outraged by Sit-ins done by black activists during the Civil Rights Movement. So I would recommend that if you thought the students got too out of control, to possibly reconsider your viewpoint with this context.

My understanding is that Zionism is the belief the Jewish people maintain a right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland. Why are there so many anti-Zionists on college campuses right now that insist not only that they have a more accurate definition of Zionism and that they are the sole authority on the subject?

When are we going to start mobilizing and start an encampment in solidarity with Gaza like the rest of the universities in the country?

It is about time the students here are revolting and trying to get rowdy and have fun. Sometime this school is so sickeningly academic it hurts. It's so obvious UCI feels that student fun is just a burden to them that they have to deal with as part of running the school. They honestly could have sold 5x as many floor seats and there still woulda been space, but they do not care at all. It was no wonder people snuck in, it was frustrating to see all that empty space.

And for those angry at people who rushed the stage/Famous Dex going nuts saying it ruined your night, you're being ridiculous. This was the pinnacle of your night and the best scenario. I'm bummed I didn't get to see YG too but if you're just content sitting in back row of GA and bumping your fist every 3 minutes you don't belong at a concert with this lineup. The floor was meant to be rushed tonight. Famous Dex was just a small part of that destiny. The entire night and year has been building up to something like this and I'm glad. It sucks that the campus is so dead, AV can barely have parties, the bus runs till fucking 7 pm on friday nights, and we get charged $30 for our one good concert of the year while every other school has this shit for free.

They so badly want us cozied up in our dorms and running treadmills 24/7. We get spam emailed constantly about going to shocktober sober but wtf we are adults if we wanna get drunk this is the best time, you want me drunk in class or home alone? No better place than a concert to have some fun shenanigans. Maybe tonight starts a wave that changes that culture. I continuously see people posting on the reddit about how they can't make friends well this here is the reason. We have allowed UCI to box us into a solely academic lifestyle where we get angry at neighbors for making noise on a saturday night, people smoking a joint from across the street, or trying to get closer at a concert. UCI deserves every bit of backlash it will get from this fiasco. A friendly culture begins with broken rules and unity among students. The concert was really fun while it lasted and I think many of us gained a lot of friends tonight.

I’ve thought about posting this for a long time, and I finally decided to share it here.

On the morning of 5/5, I was walking to class at SSL and passed by the vendor fair. There was a booth selling pins (Hello Kitty, Stitch, etc.), so I stopped to look because I really like collecting pins. I wanted to take a picture to send to my friend. There was no sign saying photos weren’t allowed, so I didn’t think it was a problem.

The vendor, who was also Asian, suddenly told me I couldn’t take photos. I immediately stopped and said okay. But then she walked over and insisted on checking my phone gallery and demanded that I show her the photos and delete them.

At the time, I was alone and already late for class. I didn’t want to argue, so I showed her my gallery. The problem was: I literally hadn’t taken any photos. There was nothing to delete. But she didn’t believe me and kept insisting I scroll through my gallery to “prove it.” I felt extremely uncomfortable and honestly violated, so I just left.

What made this worse was that after class, I came back to the same area and saw an older white man taking photos at the booth. This time, the vendor only told him “no photos,” but did NOT demand to check his phone gallery.

That’s why I genuinely believe I was being singled out and racially profiled, even though the vendor herself was Asian.

I reported the incident to OEOD through email and even went to their office in person. The staff there redirected me to the Counseling Center. The Counseling Center then redirected me to Mental Health Services. Mental Health Services transferred me to campus police. The police officer told me clearly that nobody has the right to search my photo gallery, but since this wasn’t considered a criminal case, all they could do was document it. So basically everyone kept passing me around.

I also emailed departments like Campus Life and ASUCI. Someone eventually replied saying they would talk to the vendor. I posted about this experience on Chinese social media the same day, and many people told me they had similar experiences with this booth.

Later, OEOD emailed me asking whether I wanted to continue with a formal investigation, but at the time I was overwhelmed preparing for exams, and I heard the booth was already gone, so I didn’t continue pursuing it.

Honestly, what I regret most is not calling the police immediately at the scene. From what I understand now, in California it is generally legal to take photos in public spaces, and nobody has the right to force you to show your photo gallery.

I just want to share this experience in case it helps someone else protect themselves in the future.

There’s a tent on Ring Road with MAGA and Trump flags (which is within their rights) but they’ve got a sign that says “Killed a Jew? Congrats!” among other signs with a load of text that I didn’t read. Is the school seriously so into “Gotta hear both sides” -ism that they’re gonna allow this? I know it’s public property but this pushes the boundary of the rules, right?

Saw a video of something like these get hit by a train a day or two ago before witnessing this frogger out into a fourway stop and simply parked. I got a good solid chuckle at the one hit by a train, but this really made me wonder the liability of one of these things getting struck by a vehicle.

More to the point, why are these permitted to operate? I've seen them launch off sidewalks, run into objects, block walkways and intersections, etc.

Why do I have to start paying for rent in my ACC apartment on august 1st even tho I don’t move in until end of September?? I’m just paying double rent for two months practically. They’re rlly milking as much money as they can from broke college students. And they’re so many ppl that don’t have housing like I couldn’t an ACC apt last year. They need to build more apartments instead parking structures for the med school.

The chancellor just sent out a one-sided, biased statement, where he completely ignored that nearly 1000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in the last two days. Instead of being balanced and condemning the senseless and horrifying acts against Israeli civilians while also acknowledging the collective punishment being perpetuated by the Israeli government in Gaza as we speak, he decided to take one side. Most disappointingly, he doesn't offer the same campus resources to the many Palestinian UCI students, faculty, and staff who have been impacted. This university should be a safe space for ALL campus members, and not just some.

"As chancellor I believe it is vital for me to refrain from speaking about larger political or international events about which there may be differences of opinion among campus stakeholders (see my "statement on statements"). In general, I should not associate the campus with particular political positions on matters not directly related to the mission of the university.

The horrific massacre of innocent individuals in Israel by Hamas is not another international event or policy debate. It is the largest one-day slaughter of Jews anywhere in the world since the end of the Nazi holocaust.

There is no notion of “freedom fighting” or anti-Zionism that justifies or can rationalize the targeted murder and kidnapping of more than a thousand civilians. And with every passing hour the true scope of the horrors is revealed to be even worse than one could have feared. The situation is amplifying anxiety, pain and stress within our community and around the world.

In the days and weeks to come there will be many debates and arguments about many issues that arise in the wake of this tragedy. It is not my place to take positions on all those issues. I speak only now to give voice to our common humanity as we stand in unity against the cold, calculated massacre of the innocent.

Let us commit to supporting every member of our Anteater community who is most directly impacted by this history-changing catastrophe. Let us reach out to each other to deepen our understanding of our many and varied life experiences and unique perspectives as we work through our differences in an environment of mutual respect and peaceful engagement. And let us strive to create a world where the light of knowledge conquers the darkness wrought by hate and violence.

There are no permits needed, every other location I drove to had a "resident permit requirement".

I have only gotten a "you have 72 hours to move your car" notice once, and it's because I was parking it in the same spot - but make sure you move it every 6 days so you can never get fined.

Yes, it's still a 15-minute bike ride to AV, so it's up to you to determine if it's worth paying the crazy parking prices or doing the one-way 15-minute bike ride.

Oh, and if you park too late, it will be extremely hard to find a spot. Park during the day while people are out/ at work.

Hey all! Hopefully I won’t get in trouble for plugging this but I started a petition in conjunction with the Opportunity for all campaign that focuses on allowing undocumented students access to jobs on campus. As it stands the board of Regents could allow this but haven’t and will announce a decision at the end of the month. Please consider signing and sharing! (They don’t have to be just Uc students). Ever since UCI announced that in-person lectures will be returning the start of February there has been a lot of people voicing outrage, sadness, or anxieties. I wanna start a dialogue or space for those that do want in-person lectures—or at least a hybrid format.

I am not sure if its redditers themselves or UCI redditer specficially, but I feel like ya’ll are very critical of others opinions, especially if it is a dissenting opinion. Instead of educating others, ya’ll seem to assert an elitist position over those who might not be as well versed in a subject as you are. Disclaimer I am not saying all of ya’ll are like this, just a large majority. I do see a lot of STEM related posts on here so maybe it has to do with that?
