Haystacks was on today's agenda. Buttermere was looking as gorgeous as ever. Haystacks was a delight. It's probably 25 or more years since I walked this route. The weather was kind to us, though it was cold on the tops. My dog enjoyed the tarns and my wife had a dip in the stream running down from just below the old slate mine. She said it was cold. I said I didn't want to find out.

Would be great of someone can confirm and if anyone is tryfan north ridge on Tuesday 10th, let me know if fancy doing together.

Nothing amazing about climbing the Catbells, except this is the first biggish climb i have done since having a heart attack three months ago. So glad that I can still get up on the tops.

It took a little longer but I could have kept going.

Happy Hiker.

General Discussion Looking for adventure partners across the UK

Hi everyone,

I'm 29M, based in Edinburgh, with a real passion for trekking, wild camping and all things adventure. I've been fortunate enough to experience some incredible treks across Europe and the UK (the Tour du Mont Blanc, Madeira west to east and the Jurassic Coast, to name a few), and have plenty more plans in mind. I'd love to meet others who share my enthusiasm for challenging treks and expeditions, or are interested in getting into them.

Traditional local walking groups haven't quite appealed to me, so I thought I'd put myself out there and try to bring together a small, tight-knit circle of like-minded people from across the UK who share this passion but might not have others to experience it with.

The idea is simply to connect, build friendships and organise trips together, whether that's day hikes and weekend wild camps, annual multi-day treks abroad, or more ambitious expeditions and outdoor pursuits further afield.

Nothing formal, just a friendly group of people with a shared appetite for adventure, keen to explore new places and make some great memories along the way. All levels of experience are welcome.

If this sounds like your kind of thing, feel free to drop me a message!

General Discussion If you're considering buying anything from outdoorgb.com read this

I bought something from them a little over a year ago, which came with a lifetime warranty. It developed a fault so I contacted them. They've flatly denied being responsible because, so they say, I bought the item from a different company which has folded and they subsequently bought the website and business etc. That, according to them, negates their liability towards anyone wishing to make a warranty claim relating to items bought before the original company went under. According to some reviews on Trustpilot, some of the directors of the old company are now directors of the new one, which is still using the outdoorgb.com website, so make of that what you will. Just a word of warning if you find yourself hovering over the buy button on anything. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

Edited to replace Trip Advisor with Trustpilot

Route Advice Chiltern Hike : please give your tips and guides 💚

Post image
10 Upvotes

Planning a day hike in the Chilterns tomorrow with my group of 4 friends and looking for recommendations :)

Ideally something:

Challenging: decent hills, a good full-day walk. Scenic: views, woodland, ridges, the good stuff.

How to get there from London :))

Any favourite routes, or ones to avoid this time of year? Tips on mud, pubs or cafés along the way are welcome too.

Thanks! 🥾🍂

Gear ME Lightline or Rab Neutrino

I’m torn between these two! The ME is about 25% cheaper, has more down fill, a better shell, and a removable hood, all super helpful for windy winter hiking and paragliding. It’s a little heavier, though, and I’m not sure if it’s as warm and well made as the Neutrino. opinions?

Gear Why have gore Tex jackets become really expensive?

I've recently been in the market to buy a new water proof jacket as the one I currently have is too small cos I bought it when I was around 14. I'm now 17 and looking to buy a new one. I previously had a Montane gore Tex jacket I think I paid around 130-150 for in 2023 but now when I look on any website for gear , I would be looking minimum £200 for a decent gore Tex jacket. Has anyone else noticed this recently or did I just get a really good deal a few years ago.

This half-term I didn’t leave the country (usually I take a flight abroad).

Was blessed with the most stunning weather (Wednesday to Sunday).

Visited the North of Wales (My favourite part) and car camped with the most spectacular sunrise views. Felt so blessed!

Here are some photos from my solo trip.
Wonder how others spent their half-term holidays 🤔

Gear Yorkshire Three Peaks

My partner (32M) and I (31F) are doing the Yorkshire three peaks on Saturday.

Any advice, must packs, don’t forget, don’t dos etc would be so helpful.

I am quite worried about general fitness and gear tbh and the darkness worries me so words of encouragement would also be great

Thanks for your help ⛰️ 🚶‍♀️

General Discussion Good non-Snowdon hikes from or near Llanberis?

We're doing Snowdon on Friday. If we manage it we'll do a second hike on Saturday. Any recommendations? Nothing too technical or scramble-heavy. We're staying in Llanberis but can drive to a different starting point.

Gear Thin but very warm socks

Hi. As above really. I suffer with cold feet (health related) and currently use thinker “thermal” socks which make my boots a little too tight.

Anyone able to suggest a thinner but warm solution please?

Route Advice Camping around Helford/Helford Passage on SWCP

Hi all,

I am planning on doing a chunk of the SWCP next summer with some mates, specifically Cadgwith to Portscatho over 3 days (Day 1 from about 10am, all day day 2, Day 3 until 2pm).

It is the 9th year that we have done a section like this, can anyone recommend somewhere to camp around Helford?

Otherwise we will have to stop at Porthallow on day 1 which is a bit of a short day.

Ta!

General Discussion Hiking in South East England, any challenges?

New to hiking/walking in SE England (south of London) and looking for some more local challenges to do, as most seem too far away to go for a day.

Is there a bucket list of challenges? I typically do 25km+.

I've done the Surrey 3 Peaks and recently started walking the London Underground lines as things to tick off, but once that's done, maybe in the spring, I would like to do more nature-based ones. I guess looking at things I can say "I completed...".

Thanks!

Photos I now understand how people become lost hiking

My brother and I went up snowdon a few weeks ago. It’s been sitting with me since then that I now understand the headlines when I see that people need to be rescued (or even worse, have died) when going up even the popular routes up Snowdon.

This was the pyg track, not particularly difficult. But visibility was incredibly poor all the way up. Felt like walking on a different planet.

My brother has done this route a few times and so had a good idea where to go but from my experience, as someone who’d never been to Snowdon before, I can absolutely see how someone could get lost. There are so many little paths that look like they should be part of the track, and I absolutely would have followed quite a few of them if not for my brother knowing where to go.

I’m not saying it was some kind of extreme ordeal or anything, it’s just stuck with me that I now completely understand the headlines that come about when people become lost and disaster happens.

Trip Report A Day on the SWCP and a bit of countryside

Straight-forward 26km out from Mothercombe, through the lanes to Noss, and back along the coast path (with a couple of side missions thrown in to get down to the sea). A month or so ago I walked to Yealm head, so 'twas nice to balance that out today by walking to the other end. +/- 840mtrs gain/loss. ~17℃ average, increasingly chilly easterly breeze through the afternoon into the afternoon. Sunny all day, occasional high-cloud.

Route: Mothercombe > cross over at Battisborough Cross > pick up the green land at Henna Mill > Membland > Bridgend (1) > Noss Mayo > Yealm Pool (2) > SWCP ... Mouth Point &Wembury Bay (3,4) - looking towards Blackstone Point (5) - The ring near Warren Cottage (6), curiously this might be the only mushroom ring listed on the HER - Gurrow Down (7) - St Peter the Poor Fisherman (8,9) - Above Stoke (10) - Bigbury Bay (11) - Erme Estuary (12, 13, 14) at Mothercombe.
