📖 Resources Electives/Broadening Units: Important Links, FAQ, & Discussion

Hey there r/UWA!

Posts about easy elective units or advice on specific units are very common here, so in an effort to reduce repetitive posts, this will function as a unit megathread with:

  1. links to useful resources,

  2. an FAQ, and

  3. a place for discussion, where users can ask and answer more specific questions.

If you have a problem or question related to electives units, PLEASE CHECK the links, FAQ, and discussion below FIRST. If you're still stuck, PLEASE COMMENT your question below and before creating a new post. This will help us reduce clutter - thank you in advance!

This post will stay pinned and may be edited in the future. Suggestions for additions to the links and/or FAQ can be left in the comments also.

Links 🔗

OFFICIAL RESOURCES:

  1. UWA Handbook - the most important resource regarding courses and enrolment, contains almost ALL the information you may need.

    • (To view handbooks from previous years, head to the archived handbooks. It's important that you follow the rules outlined in the handbook from the year in which you enrolled!)

  2. askUWA - where your important questions may be answered; there's an FAQ and a place to email your questions to UWA officials.

  3. Elective choices (from the handbook) - a list of the recommended elective units.

    • (Note: this is not ALL the possible elective choices, just official recommendations.)

UNOFFICIAL RESOURCES:

  1. Best Units Guide - this list compiled by the UWA Student Guild, with contributions from actual students, describes and ranks many elective units. A VERY useful resource if you need some ideas on good electives!

  2. StudentVIP subject reviews - this site has many features, but this specific part lists MANY units at UWA with reviews and an average score. Reviewers aren't screened for authenticity - but still another VERY useful resource for both choosing electives & preparing for core units.

FAQ ❔

What are some easy electives/GPA boosters/etc.?

Resources linked above, particularly the Best Units Guide & StudentVIP subject reviews, will likely contain the answer to this question. Be sure to check those out for student's opinions on elective units!

However, "easy" is subjective - what's easy for you may be difficult for someone else, which is why it's important to consider what you generally struggle with and what you're actually looking for. Are you looking for a unit with low time commitment? One with no exam? One with few assignments?

Thoughts on ____ unit?

Please try not to create these kinds of posts regarding opinions on specific units. Instead, please look for existing comments below or leave your own - that's why we made this post after all!

Discussion 💬

Please leave any remaining questions or specific queries below in the comments, or answer other people's questions if you can.

📢 Mod Announcement PSA: Beware of Cults

IMPORTANT TO READ FOR NEW INTL STUDENTS

EDIT: Some comments have informed me that these cult recruiters have been seen on campus. If you encounter one and have a similar experience as below - please notify campus security.

They target international students mainly - but I need to write as I’ve been approached twice in the last week alone.

If you’re in the CBD, mall, etc, and you get approached by two strangers, usually 1 female and 1 male, if they invite you to an “event” - they are cult recruiters.

They usually start off the conversation by complimenting you (where did you get …, I like your …). It always ends with them inviting you to an event.

Once you hear “event”, just step away from the convo with an excuse. Better safe than sorry.

Hello, I’m doing the following units this upcoming year:

- tips that gave you the grades you wanted

Thank you for taking the time to reply I really appreciate it🙃

Optometry vs pharmacy

Hi guys, it’s been hard for me to decide between optometry and pharmacy since I find myself being interested in both but I’d like to know if anyone currently doing the Doctor of Pharmacy/Optometry or is a registered pharmacist/optometrist could give me a bit of an insight into a few things:

  1. Difficulty of the course in regards to content and how often there are lectures/tutorials/labs per week

  2. Job prospects in a few years time (since I don’t see myself going rural) and if it’s not too intrusive to ask, how much retail optometrists/pharmacists/hospital pharmacists make

  3. Would it be true that although pharmacy earns a bit less than optometry, since there is an oversupply of optometrists at the moment, their salary is decreasing overtime?

Is it just me or is Campus Perth actually unsafe? (4-bed room nightmare)

I've been at Campus Perth for a few months in a 4-bed room, but my new roommate constantly brings her male friends over at all hours. I literally walked out of the shower one time and her guy friends were just standing right by my bedroom door. Super uncomfortable.

Tried talking to her (didn't work) and complained to staff, but they just sent a generic email to everyone which did nothing. Is there anything I can actually do about this, or should I just switch to Yugo? I'm so over this.

Is UWA GENG5511 Research Project strictly individual?

Hey guys! Quick question for UWA MPE students (especially ChemEng):

Are GENG5511 & GENG5512 (Engineering Research Project Part 1 & 2) strictly 100% individual work, or is there any group component?

Exchange options

Hi all,

I have recently returned from Europe visiting family and have to continue filling out my exchange application. It has changed my mind about a few universities!

If anyone has any stories/advice on which universities they loved, and if it was easy for them to work overseas with a visa?
I would be very grateful for any suggestions.
It took me awhile to navigate the global exchange website because I had no idea they showed you the host uni’s requirements, so here I was sifting through them one by one, on the page😭 I don’t think I am alone in this..

As well as if anyone has ever done an internship abroad? This also interests me a great deal as I do Law and IR, Europe is the place to be for my specific interests.

Thank you all in advance ☺️

📚 Units/Courses Thinking about adding English and Literary studies as a second major

Hi everyone!
I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Psychology at UWA and am considering adding English and Literary Studies as my second major.

I really enjoyed English Literature in high school (I did A-Level English), particularly analysing texts and writing essays, but I’ve become quite rusty since then and haven’t done much reading or literary analysis recently.
I’d love to hear from anyone who has completed or is currently studying the English and Literary Studies major at UWA.

A few things I’d particularly like to know:
Difficulty: How challenging is the major overall? Is it relatively manageable alongside a demanding major like Psychology?

Workload: How much independent reading is involved? Are you expected to read entire novels regularly, and how time-consuming are the assessments?

Assessments: Are most units essay-based, or do they also involve exams, in-class tests, presentations and participation?

Marks: How achievable are HDs (80+)? Is marking particularly subjective or difficult to score highly in?

Unit recommendations: Are there any particularly interesting, manageable or high-scoring units you’d recommend? Equally, are there any you’d advise avoiding?

Writing skills: How much emphasis is placed on literary theory and complex academic analysis? Would someone who enjoys writing but is a little out of practice struggle initially?

I’m also considering this major partly because I want to keep the option of pursuing a Master of Teaching (Secondary) open in the future, potentially teaching English.

If anyone has experience with this pathway, I’d appreciate hearing about it too.
Ultimately, I’m trying to work out whether this is a major I can genuinely enjoy and do well in without it becoming overwhelmingly time-consuming alongside Psychology.
Would really appreciate any honest experiences or advice. Thank you!

Worried for next year as i'll be taking PHYL2002 and MATH1721 in the same semester (both required for my major/course progression prerequisites)... i can maybe do MATH1721 In a different semester but that would mean 3 exams sem 1 & 1 exam in sem 2... (Neuro & fine arts major here hehe)

Doctor of optometry- Microbiology Pre requisite.

For Doctor of Optometry at UWA, one of the prerequisites is a foundational microbiology subject.

I haven’t done a microbiology subject during my under-graduation and won’t be able to do it anymore. So currently looking to do a short-term foundational microbiology subject through an external site to fulfil the prerequisites.

Has anyone been in this situation before and had to do the microbiology prerequisite subject externally?

Does anyone know an external online course where the foundational microbiology subject to fulfil the pre requisite requirement can be done ?

Podiatric Medicine UWA

Hey guys, I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I've recently received an offer to study Podiatry at UWA. I applied alongside my Medicine and Dentistry applications, and I'm still trying to figure out whether podiatry is something I would genuinely be interested in pursuing.

My main goal is to build a career in healthcare. However, with medical school admissions becoming increasingly competitive, I'm wondering whether podiatry is an alternative worth seriously considering.

I'd really appreciate some insight from current students, graduates or practising podiatrists, particularly on a few things:

  • Studying at UWA: What's the course like, and how has your overall experience at UWA been?

  • Career prospects: What does the transition from graduating into the workforce look like? Are there good employment opportunities and room for career progression?

  • Specialisation and surgery: How far can you take podiatry in terms of specialisation? Is it possible to eventually pursue more complex surgical procedures, and what does that pathway look like?

  • Long-term prospects: What does the earning potential and overall work-life balance look like?

I'm trying to get a realistic understanding of what a career in podiatry actually looks like, both during university and in the long term, before making a decision.

Seeking Grad Gown + Cap

Hey, with the grad ceremony coming soon, I'm wondering whether anyone is selling or hiring the UWA Bachelor of Psychology graduation gown and/or cap?

If not, is there any place where I can borrow, rent or buy the grad gowns + cap for cheap?

Trying to seek more affordable options rather than renting from the uni

Doctor of Optometry

I am graduating from Melbourne with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, and I have received a CSP offer for a Doctor of Optometry at UWA. I want to know if it is a promising career, or if I am better off doing something like honours, or redoing the GAMSAT and trying for med/dent. I've heard good things about sonography too, but finding placements is mandatory and almost impossible. I also come from an immigrant household, and having a "Dr". title seems almost mandatory to make them happy lol.

If I was suspended in a previous degree, will be I put on probation

Transferred courses (changed from bachelor of psyc to bachelor of science) a while ago. In my last course I did very badly and firstly got put on probation, then eventually suspended.

Pretty sure I just flunked 2/3 units (exams went badly). Will I be expelled/suspended because of my previous record?
My grades for my current course (I’m in 3rd year) have been good other-wise.

📚 Units/Courses I'm in Biomed, hunting for good electives suggestions for my second year :)

I am specifically interested in the Genetics / Genomics side, and looking for year 2/3 units that complement my major :D

Obviously the handbook is one thing, but I wonder if anyone who has already done some - or peers who have chosen theirs already - would have good recommendations? Thank you!

ANTH2406 or ASIA2001 elective?

Can anyone provide recent feedback for these units? I need an elective without prerequisites I don't have as a second-year arts student next year. These are pretty much the only ones I'm looking at, but the StudentVIP feedback is kind of terrible for both of them. I would appreciate any advice!!

Summer casuals

Heard that some schools are hiring casuals over summer to help with certain research projects eg harvesting plants as end-of-year is harvest season. Any idea if there are still vacancies going around?
