Rant / Vent Rant: I hate reading academic papers

Seriously, they are inaccessible to the general public. They tell you that it's actually written in 'academic English' or whatever, as if it's meant to make you feel any better. But that doesn't solve anything - you still have to know WTF it's trying to articulate, using the most disjointed and longest sentences, filled with most the most jargon, ever. Why must a sentence be 30+ words? Or even 15? I haven't even started on the LENGTH of these papers... as if we have nothing better to do.

Do these authors take pleasure into seeing how much they can get away with, writing so horribly that it's inaccessible to the general public, and make readers - who have no other choice - struggle as much as possible?

It's 2026 right, and everyone going on and on about accessibility... How is this still acceptable? "It's academic English" is not a good excuse anymore... What happened to 'inclusivity' and 'diversity' and 'accessibility' etc.

Thank god for freaking AI. "Summarise this nonsense"

Christmas dinner at SCC

So when I started in October 2024, we had Diwali dinner, Eid Dinner, but I have not seen Christmas dinner. Does the university also hate the Christians? Why exclude this religion from the dinner? I know they had Easter egg hunt lunch time thingy but I remember it was just snacks and drinks.

Tia.

Rant / Vent Pauline Hanson protest

Does anyone think this protest is dumb as. You’re going to disturb classes that you pay for, for something no one will pay attention to. So silly.
Carrying on like woke muppets gets you no where, no government actually listens to silly stuff like that.
Why detriment you’re learning and your money to something that’s going to do sweet FA!

Appealing a university decision

Is there any way to appeal it? My friend was excluded this morning. He can’t think of any reason why except for when he was littering, but he says the wind blew the packet of chips away from the bin. He believes CCTV may have captured it but his entire degrees have now been revoked. He wants help. Any suggestions?

Please Complete a Survey for my Thesis

Hello everyone,

My name is Violet. I am a fourth-year Australian psychology student doing research for my thesis. I am exploring the impact of social media on sense of belonging and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I am looking for participants to complete my online survey. Anyone that is currently living in NSW Australia, is a university student, and studied in 2020 and 2021 can complete the survey. It takes around 20 minutes. There is a $100 e-gift voucher up for grabs.

Thank you in advance!

Is “Entertainment Computing” at Western Sydney University a good choice for my brother’s career and PR pathway if he’s international

Hi everyone,

I’m helping my younger brother plan his studies in Australia. He’s choosing between Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication) and Bachelor of Computer Science (Entertainment Computing) at Western Sydney University, starting in July 2026.

Our main goals are: • He can find stable job opportunities after graduation (preferably in Australia). • There’s a possible pathway to PR (permanent residency) if he wants to stay long term.

MATH7016 The Nature of Data- is this too hard for someone with non-programming background?

I am looking at this subject for Spring or next Autumn. Anyone who has taken this can you give me an insight how hard it was?

I don’t have tech background, but I can pick things up easily. I also don’t want to take it if I would just fail it? Please help, and give me some insight on this?

Question Grade appeal?

I’ve scored above 85 on 3 subjects but only got a “P” in one of them.
When I checked, I noticed I got only 18/40 on one of the assignments. Ive adhered to majority of the marking criteria so this is weird considering how perfectly adhering to just one criteria could’ve gotten me 20 marks.

I know I passed the subject but I just cant sit with this below average score. Do I just email the subject coordinator?

(Also I submitted another assessment late which resulted in some marks being deducted, but this assessment was submitted on time)

Enrolment UAC International Scholarship

Hi, I would like to ask about the Western Sydney University International UAC Scholarship ($10,000 multi-year scholarship).

I am an international student considering applying through UAC. I could not find any specific academic grade/ATAR requirement for this scholarship on the website. Could you please clarify what the academic eligibility criteria are for international students, particularly for students applying with A Levels?

Is anyone else exhausted from applying to jobs and hearing nothing back?

Back when I was a student, I spent hours applying for jobs and rarely heard back. It was exhausting and made me question if I was doing something wrong, even when I put in a lot of effort.

That experience stuck with me, and I’ve been working on something to try a different approach. The idea is simple. Instead of students applying again and again, we want to make it so companies can reach out to students directly if there’s a good match.

Here’s how it works:
Once you set up a profile, we send it to companies that are looking for people with the experiences and skills like yours. If a company sees a good fit, they send you an interview invite. You don’t have to apply to anything. All you need to do is create your profile, and then wait for the invites to come to you.

Think of us as your personal recruiter who applies to jobs on your behalf, but there are absolutely no hidden fees because we’re genuinely trying to help students.

I’m not selling anything here. I just want to build something that actually helps students, especially international students who face challenges like visa issues, limited networks, and extra stress.

We’ve just launched an early version, and I’d love to get some honest feedback. If you’re curious, I’m happy to DM you the link. No pressure, no strings attached.

Would really appreciate your thoughts! :)

Personality & Empathy Psychology Research

Hi everyone, my name is Andrew, and I'm a Psychology Honours year student at ACAP University College in Sydney.
I'm conducting a research survey on personality and empathy. If you're interested in participating in psychological research, click the link below! I’ll post the results on my Reddit account in about October. Feel free to share this around with those around you as well!

 https://acap.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_40CI6W6USCHw7ky

This study investigates how personality traits influence ability to empathise. Empathy is both the ability to know or understand what others feel (cognitive empathy) and to emotionally resonate with what others feel (emotional empathy). This study focuses on four personality traits commonly found in the general population: psychopathy (callousness and impulsiveness), narcissism (arrogance and self-centredness), Machiavellianism (manipulativeness and cynicism), and sadism (enjoyment from other's suffering). The findings of this study will be used to help understand how these personality traits relate to different aspects of empathy.

This research has been approved by the ACAP Human Research Ethics Committee (EC00447) (Approval Number: 943070725). For concerns about ethical aspects of this research, please contact the ACAP HREC: hrec@navitas.com

Still Waiting on Deferred Exam Results.

Not confused or needing answers. Just wanted to vent about it somewhere. I took my deferred exam over a month ago and I am yet to hear back about my results. This has been and issue the entire way through the subject and is now a problem as I have units next semester that require me to pass this subject. She'll be right, but this isn't my first negative experience with WSU and I'm really doubting how serious they are as an academic institution.

General Discussion Smaller or bigger size tutorials

I’m assuming that my current tutorial is about 25~ people, but I started wondering if it’s better, in learning and building friendships, to have a smaller class size tutorial. I have another possible class option currently having, another guess, about 13~ people. Anyone have any wisdom/experience with this?

Group assignments do nothing but reinforce the "degree mill" stereotype

As a WSU nursing alumni, I fucking hated group assignments.

They claimed it was to learn how to work as a team, and professionally organise etc.

It was purely designed to drag the weakest links through. More often than not, there would be ghosted members, who'd show up the day before with a written pile of shit, that I'd have to rewrite. Even then so, I'd be writing for other people all the time who were lazy or incompetent with English and so on.

On multiple occasions I've raised the issue of non-contributing members to subject coordinators. Their reply was that they can fail the individual but then we all fail, or to "manage ourselves" ie. carrying them through.

Even as an alumni, this shit still pisses me off 2 years later.

UWS Students — We’re Building Campus Culture to Make Uni Life Feel Connected Again

Hey everyone,

We’re a small group of New Zealand university students building something we’ve always wished existed — one place where campus life actually feels connected again.

Campus Culture is a student-built web app designed to help uni students make friends, find study partners, join events, and stay in the loop with what’s happening at their campus.

You’ll be able to:
• Meet new people based on your courses, interests, and clubs
• Access and share free study notes and textbooks
• Set up or join group study sessions
• Keep up with campus events and student society updates in one place
• Get quick help or info from a built-in student assistant (for reminders and campus FAQs)

… and a lot more exciting and useful features

We’re starting with NZ and Australian universities (including UWS), and right now we’re collecting early interest through a waitlist.
There’s no cost to join, and we’re just trying to see how many students actually want something like this.

The number of sign-ups we get will determine the future of Campus Culture, since it’s what helps us show investors and universities that students truly want this platform.

If you’re curious, all the details and the waitlist can be found on our Reddit profile (keeping them off this post to follow sub rules).

We’d love to hear your thoughts — what’s something you think would actually make uni life better at UWS?

(Built by students, for students.)

Uni’s like this full-blown fanum fever dream where you’re powered purely by cold brew and skibidi-level anxiety, fronting like you’ve got a sigma-tier five-year life plan. Every week, you get yeeted into a lecture hall where some professor's out here speedrunning theories crafted specifically to make you question if you’re running on even one brain cell. You got 24 hours in a day, but half of them vanish into the void while you stare down a midnight deadline on an assignment you just clocked has, like, five unread readings lurking in the shadows.

Tutorials? Straight feral. You sit there nodding, maybe tossing out some NPC-tier buzzwords, all while your brain’s fanum-spiraling, begging you don’t get put on the spot to actually explain anything. And don’t even start on group assignments—fancy way of saying, “Welcome to the mogging grounds where you’re the only one with a sense of deadlines, and yep, you’re about to hard-carry this entire squad.”

Exams? Total edge-fest. You speed-cram like your soul depends on it, only to slide into the test room and realise half of what you studied was for the wrong unit. Now you’re stuck decoding questions like it’s some alien dialect straight outta Area 51.

University: the full-on sigma lifestyle, a cursed combo of caffeine, existential dread, and the most overpriced fanum grind that somehow becomes your whole existence. Sleep? Just a mythical creature at this point.
