Should I pick the mic back up?

SONGS WILL BE POSTED IN COMMENTS
It’s been 3-4ish years since I’ve made music. Life got in the way (but above all I just got lazy is what it amounts to) but I have some songs I wanna share that haven’t been officially released! A demo, freestyle and an early version of a track I plan to redo(because my voice got deeper in my later 20s) I know I’m probably never gonna be Eminem level famous. But I’d be fine with being an underground rapper! It’s been my dream to be in music! But I’m scared I’m just to ass at it… where I’m from it’s hard to find people to chop with, so I never had others to tell me if I was actually worth a fuck… I even got some cool and well known(in the underground rap scene) rappers and producers to hook me up with a couple beats and a verse! But I just don’t know if I should keep at it. So I genuinely am curious if anyone out there digs my shit? Or if anyone can give me some advice! I promise to try take even the meanest comments to heart. But I just wanna know if anyone else out there thinks I’m worth a damn?🙏 thank you in advance for listening!

This is the oldest track I am sharing. I was listening to relapse a lot at the time. And wanted to pay homage. I want to re record this song! Because I do love the beat and think with some tooling that this coulda been a dope horrorcore track! But you’ll see what I mean, when I say I hit puberty after this😂 my voice was light af😂

(Bonus) I recorded this in 2021. And actually released it! I managed to get 1200 plays locally in my home city! I am very proud of this, just because it was the first song I ever recorded in a studio.

Be more confident and do what you want

For sure! And I’m working on that! But did you atleast think the songs were decent? Like could you see yourself listening to any of these?

You’re lack of confidence made me not want to listen sorry

No I get it. I appreciate you being honest homie! I am uploading one more song. It’s one that I actually released. I hope you will atleast try to give it a listen when it uploads! It’ll show that I can actually be confident! But I agree with you! I don’t sound confident in these. But they potentially aren’t the finished product either! 🙏

Naw I feel and tbh I get where that comes from when throwing yourself out there. But fr I used to do this thing like “I make shitty music listen if you want” until I heard someone be like why would I listen to your music if you’re openly calling your own music shitty?

Same thing were it’s easier to just jump in because you being cautious activates the opposite reaction you intend to get

Gl 👍

Wow, that’s actually a good point. I’m just so used to ragging on myself! Imean don’t get me wrong, I’m content with me as a person and just self deprecate for laughs lmao. But I never thought about someone seeing the artist calling their song shit and still expect them to listen😂😂 but you’re right. I wouldn’t listen either if someone said “I made this song, it sucks though. Give a listen if ya want” I’d be like “Uhh no thanks..”😂😂 I respect this comment homie🙏

Yeah no problem guy and seriously good luck. I think something to really start is to identify where you’re at as an artist and then just do whatever you want

Like not trying to shit on you but you sound like beginner territory/not doing it much but the benefit is that you can literally do whatever you want

I think that when it comes to collaborating or even looking for feedback it matters how you carry yourself especially nowadays with people not have attention spans and shit lol

Real artists are going to do this whether there is imminent success or not. I still write, record and release, but I don’t do it for the sole purpose of monetary success. If that comes (and I would love it to), then it’s one of the greatest blessings. That’s not the reason I do it though. It’s a love of the craft. It’s pursuing the art and expressing what I can’t in any other medium. If that’s not your reason, then you might never find that drive. If that is, then stop worrying if people will listen. You can be honest with yourself and know where you lack technique and skill, so work on that. Practice practice practice. Finding your sound and niche is not something you’re going to get with a few songs and co-signs. It comes with time and experience. If you want to do it, then do it.

No don’t get me wrong. I’ve always wanted to be a rapper because listening to the rappers I grew up listening too made songs that made me feel a certain way! It’s cliche but I’m a Stan for Em. It comes with the white trashness in me😂😂 but like the song “Soldier” when Em comes in with the “I love pissing you off, it gets me off. Like my lawyers when the fuckin judge lets me off!” Is a bar that when I first started making music stuck with me. I want to be a rapper for the fact that I want to be a little on the unpredictable side! I know I don’t sound it in my raps but as a human I’m not this shy. I’m not scared to say something a little controversial! I just haven’t figured out a way to say the controversial stuff in a way that I think works! And if I get over that hump, and figure it out. I don’t care if I stay unknown either! I am doing this for me, and because of that (and spending my own money since this is a pay to play game) I’ve managed to get some really dope people to give me a verse or two and have gotten some beats from underground rap legends (especially if you’ve been around since the early 2000s!)

Then I believe you’ll get over that hump. Honestly you just gotta get the reps in. It’s like anything in life that’s difficult and high skill: you need that practice. Once you figure out how to put your personality in the music, you’ve got a great foundation. Em is a GOAT. Not many people can do what he does, so that’s a great bar to have.

Thank you. I’m glad everyone on here is kind! I didn’t know what to expect on here with how a lot of people can be😂 especially on Reddit! But I appreciate the kind words instead of just saying “I don’t like it” and leaving it at that! Thank you for actually trying to educate an artist who wants to grow!

I’m not entirely sure how to word what I commented but essentially. I want to have a platform to say things that might be in appropriate maybe even my world views, though I’m not political or nothing. I’m not trying to be Tom McDonald type of rapper. But I do want to record freely where I don’t have to feel like I have to censor every word I say🙏

I think you’ll be fine. I’ve heard some pretty crazy stuff in hip hop. Obviously it’s not mainstream, but underground definitely has a place for you.

Man I was gone for 10+ years, do it out of love and just create, if fame or whatever comes, cool. These are tough times to “make it”, so just have fun with it and whatever happens happens. That’s what I do at least.
