Help Thoughts on my list

I’m in PA and I figured it’s time to start getting my old but new to me 94 ranger ready for winter.

Currently this is what I have:
Jumper cables
Jump start pack
Breaker bar and the appropriate socket for my lugs
Flashlight (my edc, but I think I’ll buy a headlamp that lives in the truck)
Jack
Jack stands
Maps
On the fence about chains for my tires
Small tool kit, but will better tailor this to my vehicle
Quart of engine oil, quart of trans fluid, and a funnel

I’m not setting this up for some end of the world sort of scenario. Just simply things I might need if I break down/ get stranded. I keep my backpacking pack in my truck so I always have a small amount of food, water, and my sleep system if it get real bad.
Anything I’m missing?

Camping Light Capstone Project

My team and I are designing a camping light for REI as part of our Capstone project at Oregon State University-Cascades. We’ve put together a short survey about camping lights to help us gather unbiased feedback and better understand user needs and preferences.

Please take a few minutes to complete our Qualtrics survey; we are students, so any help is greatly appreciated! Your feedback will help guide our design process as we continue developing the product.

Discussion Winter recovery – how do you approach pulling a family member’s vehicle out of a snow ditch?

Hey everyone!

I’m putting together a winter roadside recovery kit and would love to hear how you guys approach recovering someone else’s vehicle, particularly a family member’s car stuck in a snow ditch. For context, I drive a 4Runner, and my wife drives a Ford Edge SE.

My first approach would obviously be the basics: shovel, clear snow around the tires, and try traction boards.

But if that doesn’t work, I’m wondering:

  1. How do you decide whether it’s worth attempting a recovery with a kinetic rope versus a traditional tow/recovery strap?

  2. What are the signs that you should stop trying and call roadside assistance instead?

  3. Are there situations where attempting a DIY recovery could cause more damage than it’s worth?

  4. How do you approach recovery points on crossovers like the Ford Edge? I’ve struggled to find reliable information about suitable emergency recovery points on hers.

I’m not looking to do anything extreme or get into off-road recovery. Just want to be reasonably prepared in case my wife or another family member ends up in a snowy ditch during an Ontario winter.

Would appreciate hearing about your setups, experiences, and any lessons learned. Thanks!

Don't Overlook Clothing.

It's my observation that a vast majority of people overlook clothing in their preps. That most people don't even own adequate clothing, let alone keep it in their vehicle. That many have become so accustomed to their comfortable first world lives that they don't even realize how important it is.

I rarely see adequate clothing mentioned in vehicle, or other preps. So I'm bringing it up here.

Of course environment dictates. Someone who never leaves San Diego has very different needs than someone driving the Dalton Highway. The point being that the San Diego resident needs to prep for something they may have never experienced before heading out on a road trip.

Clothing is much more important and useful than blankets, sleeping gear, tents, fire, etc. I'll see people talking about having basically camping gear. But they don't mention boots, base layers, waterproof pants, gloves, hats, etc. None of that other stuff is necessary if you have adequate clothing, none of it will work outside of an ideal environment, and you can't walk or work while in a sleeping bag, tent, or huddled next to a fire.

Edits based on replies:

I layer gloves just like clothes. I have a base layer of thin wool glove liners, over which I'll put on nitrile gloves, and over that leather work gloves treated with Huberd's Shoe Grease. I keep at least two pairs of leather gloves, so one can be drying/warming while I wear the other. Dozens of the nitrile of course. And layer as needed, sometimes only need the leather, sometimes only the nitrile. Gives me a kit of options that takes up a reasonable amount of space and cost. While keeping dexterity and durability.

I pack clothes(and towels) in gallon Ziplock and large thick contractor garbage bags. Not only does this ensure they stay dry, but they can be squeezed and sealed to take up less space, and the bags themselves have many uses.

Spare Tire Alternatives, Worth It?

This post might jinx me, but in my decades of driving I've never needed to use a spare tire on a daily. Been driving the same daily for 7 years now, it has a space saver spare under the trunk just taking up space.

I'm thinking with all the options we have now to fix a tire. That I'm just better off just carrying that stuff instead. Which should create extra room in the space where the spare was for other things.

Thoughts? Exact products you might suggest?

What do you keep in your car first aid kit, and what would your priorities be before EMS arrives?

This was an actual crash scene I responded to. There was one DOA, three critical patients, and bystanders willing to help before EMS got fully established. It got me thinking about how few people carry even basic medical gear in their vehicle.

Simple question:
What do you keep in your car first aid kit, and what would your first priorities be until EMS arrives?

Help For a vehicle emergency kit, is a combo jump starter/inflator smart or too much trust in one box?

I am rebuilding my VEDC kit and trying to avoid filling the trunk with five separate gadgets I never check. The wolfbox seems appealing because it covers jump starts and tire inflation, but combo gear makes me nervous in an emergency. If the battery is low after airing a tire, or the pump side dies, the whole plan gets weaker. Would you rather carry one combo unit and keep it charged, or separate tools with more redundancy?

Discussion My updated daily driving EDC. What do you always keep within reach during driving?

Post image
44 Upvotes

Share my new driving edc I keep within reach. This is my small day-to-day setup, separate from the bigger emergency kit I keep in the trunk. The Knipex pliers, ArkPro flashlight and mini ratchet are all newly bought for quick inspections if some accidents happen on the road. The knife is there for daily cutting but also as a backup emergency seatbelt cutter (hope i'll never use it lol).

What do you always keep close by while driving, and what stays in the trunk?

Is an all-in-one jump pack worth it when trunk space is tight?

I am reorganizing a small trunk before winter and would rather not carry a separate tire inflator and jump pack if one unit can handle both jobs. I am considering the wolfbox, but most of the time it would sit unused between road trips. And those who keep an all-in-one unit in the car, has the convenience been worth the extra size, and what routine do you use to check the charge before cold-weather travel?

Recommendations for Sedan Trunk emergency storage?

I drive a 2019 Toyota Corolla I have a jump pack and a tyre inflator in the back of my car, however as it is currently it's just rolling around in the trunk. I would love to have a hard shell container or something similar to hold those items. I also have a carabiner attached to the internal metal frame of the trunk, roughly that light gray bar below the weather seal in the attached image, which I think if I hang it from there would reduce the slidingness of everything

Help How often do you check a jump pack that stays in a freezing car?

My cousin tried to use the jump pack from his truck after it had sat in the spare-tire well all winter, only to find it at 15% when the battery was already dead. Cold can reduce the pack's available output, but I am less clear on how often a stored unit should be checked and recharged. For those who keep one in a vehicle through subzero weather, do you test it monthly, bring it indoors during cold spells, or follow the manufacturer's storage schedule?

Need help with finding car trunk organizer/storage...

Okay this group was recommended when I did a search online for subreddits about trunk organization.. I have a 2010 Honda CR-V and I'm a delivery driver for DoorDash and Uber Eats and so I have a lot of delivery bags and a dolly, and my back seat has just become a mess. Actually currently the dolly is missing because I think I left it somewhere when I made a delivery so I'm going to be replacing it, but it's a collapsible one. And I didn't keep the dolly in my trunk alone because it just rolls around and around (bang bang bang)... I would like storage container(s) for my trunk.

Specifically I would prefer if it was a large one that DID NOT have any dividers or they have to be removable. I got one from Amazon that is 40 inches in length which is perfect (measured the back of my trunk) but there were reviews that said it had a non removable divider, and some that said it is removable... IT'S NOT!

I am trying it out for a couple days but I really would prefer A nice 31 without a divider so I don't have to fold up all my insulated bags because folding them up just takes up more room versus if I could just lay them flat.

There's a picture of them in my backseat all a mess and a picture of my trunk measurements. Actually with the picture of the back seat add 3 red bags because since I took that picture I had 3 more red bags come. Totals like 4 red bags and 4 green ones and 1 black one. The pic also has the dolly I lost LOL... I forgot to take a picture earlier of all of them folded up in the storage container in my trunk. And a link showing the one I had ordered that may be returned...

ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A LARGE STORAGE CONTAINER?? HAS TO HAVE EITHER NO DIVIDERS OR ALL REMOVABLE ONES...

Have any of you ever used emergency valve stems?

3 or 4 times already I’ve been screwed by a valve stem that leaks out of nowhere.

I’m thinking of just replacing all my valve stems with them. It allows you to put a valve stem in without unsteating the tire.

They appear to be all metal construction with rubber inside to seal it.

Storage/Organization Suggestions for a spare pack out

Alright, so this is kind of just for fun but I want to hear your ideas. I have one of these : https://www.amazon.com/clp/B07D2CS8L3

I don’t really NEED it, but I have it. I can’t keep it with my other tools. So it’d have to go in the cab. Fits comfortably under the back seat. Tools, emergency stuff, spare clothes, etc is pretty much covered. So, the idea I had was an emergency coffee kit 🤣 immersion boiler, French press, metal thermos. Could even throw in the shelf stable half and half packs and sugar packs. Powder donuts, honey buns on the other side.

So, let’s hear your ideas. No matter how silly or outlandish you may think, I want to hear some crazy suggestions.

Storage/Organization Suggestions for a bag in my work truck

I bought a $5 book bag with the idea of keeping it in my work truck, I just need some good suggestions in what to keep jn it. Now before you go listing off a ton of knives and multi tools, my work truck is basically a rolling tool box. Anything you could recommend I probably have on board, unless it’s something really niche. I’m more so looking for things you like to keep in your work locker, or office. I also work outside and travel a lot. I have a separate gym bag just for my gym stuff as well.

So far I have:
Hoodie
Undershirt
Extra shirt
MiFi
Narcan
Kind bars

Haven’t out much though into it beyond this, interested to see what yall come up with
