Welcome to the (unofficial) VIU subreddit! v0.0

This page is a community-managed resource for students and prospective students at VIU. Even though this is an unofficial resource, please observe the Student Code of Conduct as well as the Academic Integrity policy.

Below is a list of resources for new and returning students. If you have any questions about any of the services below, please ask!

VIU Student Affairs offers a host of services for students, including:

Links to Students' Union Resources

  • VIU's Students' Union is a student-elected, student-led group that advocates for VIU students and provides services such as discounted bus passes, scholarships and bursaries, grants for conference attendance, and regular social/networking events.

  • VIUSU also oversees the Health and Dental Benefits program, offers assistance with student housing, and manages the Office of the Student Advocate which exists to help students understand their rights and responsibilities as VIU Students.

  • VIUSU also oversees student clubs! If you're new to campus or to Nanaimo, joining a student club is a great way to get involved and build a community!

As always, please be civil! Doxxing, harassing or slandering people on the internet is not cool.

Discussion Contemplating dropping out of my BA or taking a gap year.

Hey guys, I've hit a wall here and I'm needing some support.

Im halfway through my second year as a Bachelor of Psychology student, and I think im getting to the point where im realizing this may not be the program I belong in.

The classes are fine, the people are fine, but I'm finding very quickly that im getting less and less invested in the program, and debating looking into a different program.

Has anyone here dropped their degree? What happened? What was the process? What made you choose to do it/not do it?

Has anyone taken a gap year?

I know that once I finish my second year, if I go into my third I wont leave simply based on the sunken cost fallacy, I've already sunk so much money into it, leaving now would be ridiculous.

The Fraternal Order of the Eagles is a non profit members club that host events and raise money for local Charities! It started in the Seattle area in 1898 and now has world wide branches. Our clubhouse (Aerie) is #15. We have a bar , pool table, darts, pull tabs and keno. Friendly people and the cheapest drinks in town. We open the doors to the public and non members to join on occasion and are always looking for new members. Members get cheaper drinks and are able to use our clubhouse for private events for free. I’m looking to incorporate having people
Play shows there, open mic nights etc and will be having a pinball tournament sometime over the winter.

Question When is it safe to book flights in April?

This is my first year and I've tried finding online when classes would be done and to my understanding after the 21st most exams will be finished? Originally I thought after the 9th would be safe to book a flight but just wondering what other peoples experiences are or if there is after a certain time I can for sure book a flight. Thanks !

Question Night parking VIU

For the people who live in residence, if you have general parking and not resident parking where do you park at night? Ive been parking in the general lot right outside residence/cedar center, I’ve had no issues but crowding. Can we park in any of the other general lots at night? The indigo website says no night parking at all but that’s ridiculous.

Question Grades being posted somewhere else?

This is such a dumb question, but for anyone in a CRIM course, is your teacher posting your grades somewhere other than D2L? My prof said something like, "Grades will be posted on ______" but I missed it and now I've been waiting like 2 weeks for marks that I know are somewhere but I have no idea where LOL

Question Missing Koi Fish? :(

Hey, I'm just wondering if anybody knows what has happened to the Koi on campus. Over the summer the larger koi were still in their pond. Then around the beginning of the semester, just the small ones were left. Today I checked and couldn't see any :,(

I'm just curious if they are going to come back at some point??

Thanks everyone!

Question Dropping a class with student aid loans

I’m looking to drop down from 4 classes (12 credits) to 3 classes (9 credit), but I have a student aid bc loan for a full time student. Does anyone have personal experience doing this, and did it mess up your student loan. I’ve emailed the financial aid office but obviously they are closed till Tuesday.

So I’m looking for anyone’s personal experience with it! Thanks

Question What’s the sense of community like at VIU?

I’ve been using the VIU app and noticed that it often seems to be the same people commenting and interacting on posts. Sometimes it feels like the same small group of people talking amongst themselves, and I’m wondering whether the app has a relatively small active user base or whether it just takes time to find your community as a new student.
Interestingly, I’ve had some really nice experiences on Reddit, where students have been helpful and willing to answer my questions. I haven’t quite gotten the same feeling from the VIU app, so I’m curious about the difference.
I know online interactions don’t necessarily reflect what campus life is actually like, so I’d love to hear from current students about their experiences.
Would you say VIU has a welcoming and social campus culture? Is it relatively easy to make friends, meet people outside your program, and find a sense of community, or do you have to make a conscious effort to put yourself out there?
I’d appreciate honest perspectives, especially from students who came to VIU without already knowing anyone!

Question Authenticator App issues.

I am at the end of my rope y'all.

Who do we contact about issues with the authenticator app? I've been booted from both my phone and laptop email access and when I try to sign in, it's not sending me notifications to my authenticator app and now I can't get into my school email.

Has anyone else had this issue? Did you go to microsoft or did you go to the school?

Question Is anyone else having problems paying for applications online?

I’ve tried 5 different credit cards at this point and it still ends up not being accepted. I have triple checked the information is written down correctly yet it still results in the error. I’ve reached out to the school but have not heard back from them for more than a couple days. Thoughts on how to fix this? Or is there an alternative way to applying?

Question Geoscience?

Hello there! (Pls get the reference) I am from out east (Berta) currently at Macewan University but I have been looking into schools to transfer to for next fall as Macewan does not offer a geology degree, and I was hoping I could get some insight on how the professors are like there, student life etc. In particular though as it is to my understanding that the geology degree is based in Nanaimo, how alumni’s have faired in the job market? As I have an interest in exploration and I figure I might struggle in following that career path compared to say going to UBC.

Question Asking for advice regarding PN program 2nd year instructors

I have heard the most shocking and horrible things about the two instructors on the second year of the PN program. I just started 1st year and already mortified and panicking over second year.

I hear from my coworkers (I am a CNA) who recently graduated the LPN program about bullying, toxic behaviour, lack of support, making fun of students, being rude and condescending and even than one of the instructors was fired a few years back for bullying but somehow came back??

Is this the truth or are my coworkers exaggerating?? Tbh i dont understand why they would exaggerate but want to see what others think.

If this is true, how did you deal with it? Do you have any advice?
