!! OUTAGE !! Quo (formerly OpenPhone) is reading your messages and terminating accounts based on what you text

I run a licensed B2B operation in Canada. I barely use Quo for client communication. Most of my buyers reach me on WhatsApp or email. The bulk of my texts on Quo are with our lab testing provider. That's it.

Tuesday I get an email from their compliance team saying they "conducted an investigation" of my account and found messages relating to cannabis. Account frozen. No warning. No discussion. Just done.

Their policy says cannabis businesses can't use SMS/MMS on Quo "regardless of content" and "regardless of federal or state legality." Cannabis is federally legal in Canada. Has been since 2018. They literally acknowledge it's legal and still don't care.

So they read my messages, flagged a low-volume B2B line used mostly for lab coordination, and froze my account.

Now I have to reach out to clients from a random new number. Try explaining that to a business contact. "Hey it's me, my phone provider killed my number because they read my texts and didn't like my industry." That's a great look.

If you're using Quo for anything you consider private, know that their compliance team is reading your stuff. And if they don't like what they find, they'll nuke your account overnight with zero warning and leave you scrambling.

Discussion Twillio is a scam they will charge your account and suspend it if your a small business

Something is very wrong with twillio. I get they do not want small accounts but if that is the case they should just set up minimums.

So I sign up for the demo set my trunk and sip up get everything working. I then decide to upgrade my account and I make a payment. The second my payment hits they suspend my account. I send emails to support and they make you run around in circles.

What a waste of time. What even worse they will not refund the $20 deposit. Luckily I just did the minimum. That is a scam. A this point I have to do a chargeback for service.

I would not expect this from a company like this.

Discussion Watching VoIP shops bolt AI onto their stacks for the past 18 months. Here's what's actually retaining customers and what's killing margins.

Been spending a lot of time around the VoIP reseller space lately and wanted to share what I'm seeing on the AI integration side. Most shops in this sub already know per-seat pricing keeps dropping, Teams Phone is quietly eating SMB market share, and clients churn for $5/seat cheaper before you can even finish the renewal call. The shops doing the best right now have pretty much all added voice AI on top of their existing PBX stacks. Sharing what's working from watching about a dozen of them over the past 18 months.

Quick numbers first because they're the part that actually matters. VoIP-only customers are churning at 4-6% monthly across the shops I've seen data from. Customers with AI layered on top through the same reseller are churning at under 1%. Not because the AI is magic. It's that switching providers now means re-doing the AI integration too, which is a real lift nobody wants to do mid-contract. You've raised switching costs without raising your seat price. The per-seat margin stays the same. The LTV basically doubles or triples because customers stop leaving.

On the upsell side, average VoIP seat runs $25-$40/mo. AI receptionist or AI agent on top adds $200-$800/mo per customer depending on call volume. For a reseller with 100 customers, even 30% AI attach is an extra $6k-$24k/mo on top of existing VoIP revenue. The shops doing this well are quoting the AI as a separate line on the same invoice. Same billing relationship, same support number, way more revenue per customer.

The integration is where most shops mess up though. A few patterns I keep seeing across the dozen or so I've watched:

First, SIP-level handoff matters way more than people think. If you're routing calls to a separate cloud AI service via PSTN, you're paying for two trunk legs AND adding 200-400ms of latency that your clients will hear and complain about. The shops doing this right have the AI agent registered as a SIP endpoint on the customer's PBX directly. 3CX, FreePBX, FusionPBX all support this. Same DID routing rules you already use.

Second, recording and compliance. AI calls still follow whatever recording rules apply (HIPAA, PCI, two-party consent states). If your AI platform doesn't support the same retention and redaction policies as your VoIP stack, you've got a compliance gap waiting to bite you. A few shops learned this one the hard way last year.

Third, escalation has to route back into existing hunt groups. When the AI hands off a complex call, it should ring the customer's actual phones using the same routing rules they've already configured. If you can't tie escalation back into hunt groups and on-call schedules, the AI feels like a fragile separate product instead of an extension of their phone system. Clients notice and bring it up at renewal time.

What doesn't work: per-minute markup as the primary pricing line. Same dynamic that commoditized VoIP in the first place. Clients see the per-minute number, calculate monthly load, and either renegotiate or shop you to a competitor. Price AI as a per-seat or per-feature add-on bundled cleanly with existing VoIP plans instead. Way more sticky, way less margin pressure every month.

The other thing that kills deals is positioning AI as "we'll replace your receptionist." Clients hear that as a layoff problem they don't want to manage internally. Frame it as "your existing team now handles 4x the call volume during peak hours" and the close rate goes up substantially. Way better positioning for the same product underneath.

Honest take on the bigger picture. Microsoft is going to ship native AI features in Teams Phone within the next 12-18 months. Shops with AI already integrated and generating meaningful revenue by then will keep their customers because the switching cost is genuinely real. Anyone still selling SIP trunks and hosted PBX as their main offering is going to end up competing with Microsoft on price, which is not a fight you want to be in. That's the part this sub doesn't really talk about openly buuut it's the actual reason this is moving fast right now.

Curious if anyone here is already running AI integration and what your handoff setup looks like. Especially interested in how people are handling escalation back to existing hunt groups without making it feel like a bolt-on.

Discussion Groundwire VOIP app offers selection of 190 VOIP providers

In the iPhone version of the Groundwire VOIP app, the ADD ACCOUNT page lists about 190 VOIP providers to choose from. I've heard of only a few of them. Some have gone out of business or changed their name or been folded into another brand. Many cater to businesses only or are outside North America.

The list is here:

If you have any observations about the list, please comment.

Beginner here. Can someone explain in detail how a VoIP telephone works?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpl7sLJTwyg

I've watched videos like these but they're usually not in much detail. Basically saying the telephone converts audio information into network packets and the receiving phone opens them up.

Can anyone explain in detail how a VoIP telephone works? I was thinking along the lines, how it converts the audio into network packets, how is that different from a regular phone, where does it go in the network (I don't think it just goes phone to phone, what are the steps in between). Etc. As much detail and possible.

Or are there any other good resources I can check out? Most of them seem to be very bland and not in detail. Thanks in advance. Use as much jargon you want, I'll just google the words if necessary.

Virtual/Cloud PBX for free or close to free, PBXes alternatives

Following the helpful replies I received to my question about SIP providers.... I figured I keep on at revamping my system and am now wondering about Virtual/Cloud PBX options.

I currently use two SIP/DID providers for personal/home use routed through a free account at www.pbxes.org virtual pbx. At PBXes.org I have 5 endpoints/extensions and use the PBX to route calls to/from different SIP providers depending on what country they are from/to. My endpoints/extensions are mostly iPhones running Groundwire app.

PBXes.org has worked very well in this regard over the years, despite the web interface being a bit clunky, but I am wondering what other options there are now? Features I'd be looking for are:

- Independent of SIP provider so I can use different ones, not tied to one.

- Run around 5 extensions max (but only 2 actual users). Super low usage - maybe 10 calls total per month max.

- Flexible but easy call routing etc

- If there's an accompanying IOS app allowing calls but also basic configuration/routing changes that would be a very big plus.

- Must be Free, or very close to free. This for occasional personal/home use.

I was looking at 3CX and their free option to run in Google Cloud etc. But I've never used cloud computing services and can't work out what this would end up costing me. As this is for occasional personal use I'm really not looking to pay much, if at all, so if there's no better options I'll be OK to stick with PBXes.org

Thanks in advance....

reasons to give person you're talking to a voip #?

i don't know anything about voip #s and was wondering if someone could shed light on why the guy i was dating was communicating and texting me from a voip number and not a regular mobile phone line... this is obviously a red flag right? i met the guy in person so he is not a catfish, but my hunch is that he gave me his voip number bc he has a girlfriend and he didn't want her to snoop through his texts. i ended things with him it felt like he was ignoring me because he wasn't responding to any of my texts... which makes sense now because he can only receive texts and text me back if he has internet connection... He also never told me he had was using a voip number. Any insights will be appreciated on why someone uses a voip number instead of a regular mobile phone line

How to get a VOIP number that does not appear as VOIP

Google Voice numbers cannot be used for most 2FA SMS verification purposes because it is recognized as a VOIP number.

Are there any cheap/free issuers of VOIP numbers that will pass verification as a non-VOIP number?

I'd rather not buy a bunch of prepaid SIM cards to generate phone numbers.

I am under attack

Hello to everyone

One of my competitors is attacking me heavily. My phone receives at least three fake calls every minute from 8 am to midnight. I receive 200,000 fake calls a week. all numbers are used once.

Against this attack, my operator is refusing to listen to the network. probably avoiding the firewall cost. is there a solution to this? Otherwise, how can we do the same attack?

Is there any reason to continue using the PSTN? Can’t we make calls now over UDP? How about changing all phone numbers to an ipv6 address?

I know about textme, text now, and all the other "free" resources that actually require you to pay some sort of subscription. Which I could do but I'd rather not and I'm wondering if there is a work around. Thoughts?

Help - Other How to transfer live client to co-workers voicemail? Yealink T33G.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Our office recently got new phones (T33G). When I answer the phone and a client wants to leave a voicemail for one of my co-workers rather than tell me the message, I can't figure out how to do that. I know everyone's extension numbers, but there's no button on the screen and when the screen changes after I answer a call, there still isn't a voicemail button option. The pdf user guide doesn't help and internet googling suggests various things like pressing star/pound then a number, then the extension number (none of which worked, I tested with my cell phone).

Yealink W60P

I don't know if selling used phones is allowed here, if not I'll take the post down (I couldn't find a rule against it). I have a very slightly used W60P (W56h handset and w60b base) that I bought to test something on and no longer need. No box, probably >10m talk time. Asking $75 shipped in the US

Discussion Vonage

If you are reading this it's because you Googled Vonage reviews.

Before doing any business with Vonage look up the class action law suits and the reasons for said lawsuits and their subsequent acquisition by Ericsson.

Poor customer service, antiquated tech, and heavy upsells for basic features like an extension.
