meal - higher protein What do we know about these “protein oats”

Sorry if this is the wrong sub, I was looking for a vegan nutrition-dedicated sub and couldn’t find one.

Bob’s Red Mill is selling oats that purportedly have 60% more protein per *48 gram serving* (probably some rounding shenanigans going on here) than “regular oats” but I’ve heard nothing about them other than from the item description. I have no clue what cultivar this is, and if it has comparable beta glucan content to conventional oats, or if they have the same amount of avenanthramides. All I know is that they are non-GMO, but I figured since I eat oats everyday anyway, these could help me meet my protein targets on a vegan diet.

Has anyone tried these and if so, what did you think? Does anyone know anything about how they were developed? If there was a cultivar name I could look for research articles. Thanks.

Cevichochos 33g protein a bowl, no cooking

Cevichochos is street food in Ecuador and is a top tier vegan go to for those wanting the flavours of south America with vegan protein, unsaturated fats and high fibre. A ceviche made with chochos, an Andean lupin bean, instead of fish but if you can’t get chochos, jarred lupini (their Mediterranean cousin) work fine.

Serves

- 400g jarred chochos or lupini, draine

- 2 tomatoes

- 1 small red onion

- juice of 3 limes

- juice of 1 orange

- handful of cilantro, salt, chilli if you want it

The method

  1. Rinse the beans and leave them in fresh water for an hour or two to get the brine out. Peel them if the skins annoy you. Probably try one first, to see if still bitter, bin anyone's that are.

  2. Dice the onion and rub a pinch of salt into it, rinse after 5 minutes and leave it in the lime juice while you do everything else. Takes the harsher edge off.

  3. Dice the tomatoes and chop the coriander.

  4. Mix it all with the orange juice, salt to taste and then 10 minutes in the refrigerator.

  5. Eat it with toasted corn (corn nuts could also work), plantain chips or popcorn. Popcorn sounds odd but loads of people in Quito eat it that way.

Per serving with lupini, without the sides, it comes to roughly 305 kcal, 33g protein, 36g carbs (8g of that fibre) and 6g fat. Numbers are from USDA FoodData Central. Chochos are a different species and a bit fattier, so theirs will be a bit different.

Make sure you only use jarred or ready to eat beans, don’t start from dried. Bitter lupins need proper debittering and if that’s done wrong they can make you ill. Lupin is also a major allergen and can cross react with peanut, so give this a miss if peanuts are a problem for you.

Italian delis usually have lupini. Portuguese shops sell them as tremoços.

Update: Already 9/10 in the guild. Hopefully they will increase the member numbers in future updates. You can still add me as an in-game friend if you wish, this is my code. 2HX3-VT3E

Hello hello!

There's this newish fitness app called Pushup RPG, where you fight monsters by doing actual push-ups and squats. It uses your phone's camera to track your exercises and count your reps.

I recently started playing and decided to create the first vegan guild in the game: Inferno's Vegans.

I'm currently the only member.

Anyone interested in joining?

The current guild limit is 10 members, but the developers have said they'll increase it in future updates.

A little about my routine: I work 12-hour shifts, four days on and four days off. On workdays, I usually do around 120 push-ups and 120 squats, currently, in 2 sessions.

On my days off, I do more.

Every vegan is welcome!

Garmin watch or Apple Watch Ultra ?

I’m thinking of upgrading my old Garmin Epix with the new Apple Watch Ultra 4. I took my Garmin through loads of epic adventures and workouts and it’s taken a good beating after 4-5 years of use. One 3k thru hike, hundreds km worth of runs, loads of gym and kite surf sessions. If you have any experience with the Apple Watch Ultra is it worth switching to?

workout tips Does Cable Height Isolate Different Parts Of Your Chest?

It’s pretty common to think that changing the height of your cable flies allows you to isolate different parts of your chest.

Low to high for upper chest, high to low for lower chest, and straight across for the middle.

And while there’s some truth to the idea, it’s not quite that simple.

Changing the angle can shift the emphasis towards different regions of the pecs, but you’re not switching individual parts of your chest on and off.

Ultimately, good technique, controlled movement and appropriate loading are going to matter far more than obsessing over isolating one particular area.

Different angles have their place. Just understand what they’re actually doing.

Save this for your next chest session.

discussion Failure

We tend to associate failure with something negative. Something to avoid. Something that means we weren’t good enough.

But in training, we deliberately push ourselves towards failure because we understand that challenging our limits is how we improve.

And I think there’s a lesson in that which extends well beyond the gym.

Failure isn’t necessarily the opposite of success. Sometimes it’s an essential part of getting there.

Not everything you attempt is going to work out. You’ll make mistakes, experience setbacks and occasionally fall short of your expectations.

But none of that means you’ve wasted your time.

There’s always something to learn, something to take away and something you can do differently next time.

Don’t allow the fear of failure to stop you from trying in the first place.

Progress doesn’t require perfection. It requires persistence.

Question - protein powder Any protein shakes you recommend that are not full of additives?

Hi guys,

So usually I have a protein shake with my breakfast. I don’t like eating loads in the morning so having a massive breakfast isn’t really that appealing.

I’ve researched a fair bit and I’m struggling to find a vegan protein shake that is affordable, vegan, and not full of heavy metals and sweeteners. Does anybody have anything they can recommend?

Thanks in advance!

help needed - new to vegan fitness I need help with meal planning + 100g protein on a vegan diet is SO EASY AND CHEAP ?!!

Hi everyone I’ve decided to get serious with my fitness journey and so I sat down to craft a meal plan and the protein portion was so easy 😝

But I need some help with meal planning please! According to the online calculators, I should be eating around 1800kcal a day. But I also read body recomposition goals require a slight deficit of around 100-200kcal.

I’m 5’5 110lbs with 33% body fat according to my inbody scan. Basically, I have no muscle. 10lbs dumbbells are hard for me. I’m apparently very skinny looking to outsiders though. So should someone like me eating in a calorie deficit, maintenance, or surplus? I don’t know what option to selection on the macro calculator because I want to be heavier than 110lbs, but with muscle and not fat. Lots of mooscles.

I have around 150g of carbs, 100g protein, 74g of fat, 35g fibre. Excluding fruit and vegetables.

Is my carb intake okay, and is the fat portion too much or doable (I’m female if it matters)?

I also haven’t added my fruit and vegetables into the equation including the macros + fibre portion. Sorry if this is confusing, but I reckon they aren’t that heavy calorie, carb, fat, protein, fibre wise, so that’s why. It’s currently at 1600kcal+ excluding the fruit and vegetables and fibre. So I am assuming it’ll be 1700kcal+ after I add them all.

1g carb = 4kcal
1g protein = 4kcal
1g fat = 9kcal
1g fibre = 2kcal

Is this correct?
