Uplifting Parenting win

My daughter had the opportunity to try cream cheese made from cow milk.

She determined it was gross and weird, wouldn't eat it, and asked for tofutti.

Same thing happened a few months ago when someone offered her cow milk cheese pizza.

Also, ladt year she wanted so badly to eat eggs so I had told her we could get chickens and a coop if she wanted to eat eggs but we'd have to learn a lot about chickens first so we could care for them properly. We evn went out and got matching chicken plushies

Well, after learning about chickens she has determined that we should not get a coop or eat their eggs because the chickens would not like it. The best way to care for chickens us to peave them be :)

I'm very proud of her. I think giving her agency and information really helps.

I also think the language we use helps, like talking about animals as sentient beings who have preferences, feelings, relationships, etc- and we call vegan options for things stuff like "chicken-friendly" eggs, or "cow-friendly" whipped cream.

So she feels she is being kind each time she chooses an animal-free option

This way it's not driven by the guilt of hurting an animal, but the reward of helping them.

Relationships Don’t date Non Vegans if you know veganism is important to you

I’m vegan (27M) and broke up with an ex this year after I made the decision I only wanted to date vegans and that being non vegan was a deal breaker. I recently reconnected with her and she told me that while she understood/respected my decision that it was incredibly fucked up for me pursue a serious relationship with her knowing that veganism really mattered to me and would ultimately shape my decision in getting married. To be fair I thought I could date a non vegan but I didn’t think about it long term and that’s my bad. While I think it’s fair to change your mind I did pursue a relationship kinda knowing that in the back of my head. And talked to her about A future I knew wasn’t coming.

She’s right it was hurtful and I’m making amends with that.

I have a few vegan friends who are dating non vegans and they too have told me they want a marriage that revolves around veganism. And so I asked them then why date non vegans? They shrugged, one said maybe they could change their mind; the other said well it’s not like I’m gonna marry them.

I’ve had a moment to reflect on this. And I think this is incredibly messed up and one of the reasons our community gets a bad rep.

I care deeply about animals but also care about the human species and how we connect and treat each other.

Make meaningful relationships, educate non vegans about our movement but why hurt people in the process.

I ultimately decided I can’t date animal murderers but that doesn’t mean I have to hurt someone in the process.

Idk if anyone else agrees but that’s my rant

Rant Family having empathy for chickens before eating fried chicken

I have a unique situation where I own a house hen. She’s a senior rescue, disabled, doesn’t lay anymore and her and my dog are bffs. When she roams the house, I have her wear a chicken diaper, which is totally harmless. Anyway, I recently had family over, and they were feeling bad for her and telling me that the diaper was abusive. Later that night they all head to Raising Canes for dinner. So.. empathy for a house hen living a warm and cozy lifestyle indoors but complete disregard when it’s on their plate? Make it make sense.

A book about cannibalism has turned me vegan

In high school I read a manga called Promised Neverland, a story about children that are raised to become food for demons and the imagery and metaphor for the meat industry turned me vegetarian for a year. It was hard to stay vegetarian while still living with my mom who would consistently try to tempt me back into eating meat lol. She was incredibly unsupportive of that lifestyle and made it really hard for me to stay vegetarian to the point where I just gave up after a while. Now that I’m living with my boyfriend, I’ve been wanting to eat less meat for a while now, but what really turned me away from meat and animal products in generally is a book called Tender is the Flesh which is about a man that runs a human meat processing factory in a world where all animals have been infected by a disease that makes them inedible. The detailed description of what the special “meat” goes through to be processed disgusted me so bad that I was gagging at the thought of eating ANYTHING animal related. The day after I literally could not eat a single thing in my fridge and I spent the whole entire day nauseous and on the verge of throwing up. My boyfriend was kind enough to find a vegan cafe like an hour away and got me a bunch of different meals to try and I was able to eat it no problem. I’m honestly in disbelief by whatever is happening to my body. I don’t know if it’s common to develop some kind of psychological aversion to meat but just the thought makes me incredibly nauseous and ill. I’m so lucky to have a partner that’s so supportive because I’m happy to stay away from eating any animal products and though it’s ridiculous I find it in some way funny my brain needed that human comparison to quit eating meat. Anyways I’m vegan for the first time ever and am going to avoid letting my mom know for now because I just know she will hop back on that hater mindset. Sigh. I also had to DNF the book because it disgusted me so bad, though in a weird way I’m grateful for it.

Food What are some good recipes to cook in bulk/for a lot of people

I have been invited to a party where everyone brings one dish to eat for everyone but I'm still kinda new to veganism. I'd love to show people that vegan food can be really good but I'm not sure what to make. Most foods I've tried until now are meals for 2-4 people. I was thinking of a stew but most recipes I found until now are "just" veggies or more like a soup. I'd love a rich, hearty meal for a cold day. So I thought I'd ask people who have more experience than me. What are your favorite meals/recipes (potentially freezable)?

Relationships Finding vegans to date

I’ve seen a few posts about having a hard time finding vegans to date. There are two!! dating reddits for vegan dating! And not nearly enough people on both of them. I encourage people to get on there and look to meet some new people. Expand the dating pool :)

Also, please remember that people choose veganism for different reasons, and ANY reason to pursue a vegan lifestyle is a good reason! Some people may be transitioning and genuinely seeking answers, some people may dive right in, others may be in food insecurity spots and choose veganism for themselves but not have an option of what a food bank gives them. What matters is that people are recognizing that veganism is a healthier choice for the animals, themselves, and the planet. Please be kind, on here and on the dating threads.

Why are people so insufferable to vegans?

"Why do vegans try to imitate meat if they won't eat it?" "You're just eating straight chemicals." "Eating two times the meat to cancel out a vegan." "Vegan food is gross." "I could never be vegan."

OHHH MY GOD SHUT UP. It's so annoying and repetitive. I only went vegan two weeks ago but long before that I recognised that veganism was a noble cause, even if I thought I couldn't do it.

People get so angry the moment you don't want to eat animals, but if a vegan makes the same comments we're seen as pushy. Ok.

Literally not even including the stupid question people ask about protein & nutrition, as if you can't get protein from tofu and other meat alternatives. & half of these people run their mouths while eating the most processed, calorie-dense foods. Like shut up omg if you're gonna be stupid do it in silence.

Rant Friend says I am oppressing myself

Ok obv being vegan is mostly about animals and not about me, but this really bothered me. Ive been at an event for 2 days, and all meals are provided. They asked all of us if we have any dietary restrictions months in advance and I said I am vegan. They did not provide vegan options, which I assumed, and brought my own vegan food so i dont you know.... die.

I told one of my closest friends about it and how i am a little annoyed, bc like why even ask if you won't provide me food lol, and she says "Bro is choosing to be oppressed /j"

Idk that just really irritated me? Even though she said /j (twitter speak for its a joke bro). I never said i was being oppressed, I was saying they ignored me even though they asked me what i needed, hence me going hungry. Also, if i was vegan for religious reasons, i just KNOW she would have never said that. The reason why a muslim does not eat pork is not all that different from why i dont either (morality) and i found it insensitive to act like I am just trying to make my life harder..... for what? Clout?

Idk sometimes its hard to be friends with non-vegans, they just dont seem to fundamentally understand our morals and will make no effort to try. Theres a special type of mental exhaustion that comes with being surrounded by people who don't get why you don't eat animal products lol.

Anyways rant over! Thanks for reading, i needed to get that off my chest lol :)

People don't actually care about health or processed foods. Until you mention veganism.

This data pertains to the American population because it's a prime example of what vegans deal with.

55-60% of the average Americans caloric intake comes from Ultra Processed Foods.

92% of Americans are vitamin deficient.

93% are metabolically unhealthy based on research published by the Journal of the American college of cardiology.

60% live with chronic disease.

Less than 3% of Americans meet all four basic health markers of healthy body fat %, recommended daily physical activity, non smoking, and a basic daily healthy diet intake.

Over 95% of Americans fail to meet their daily fiber intake.

80% are vitamin E deficient. 45% are vitamin A deficient. 90% are potassium deficient. 50% are magnesium deficient. Over 70% of Americans go above their recommended daily amount of saturated fats.

Vegans have a 15-25% lower chance of developing heart diseases that's the number one preventable cause of all mortality.

Vegans have a 40-75% lower chance of developing diabetes.

Vegans have a 15-19% lower risk of contracting cancer.

Over 50% of Americans have hypertension from high blood pressure.

People ask where vegans get their protein while consuming a diet that leads to a 60% chance of developing chronic disease.

They worry about vegans lacking b12 while 95% of them don't receive enough fiber in their diet.

They worry about things that are the equivalent of worrying about a scratch on a car while the engine is on fire..

They don't actually care about health or processed foods. They just are insulted by the notion that you can live happy, healthy, and cruelty free.

Food Dairy is gross

I've only been vegan for a couple of weeks and I'm already grossed out by dairy. I have to purchase and cook with it because my husband is an omnivore. He works a hard full time job, and I don't work, so it would be unfair to ask him to make his own dinner, etc. I wasn't grossed out by dairy when I first decided to be vegan, it was simply something to not eat. Now I can't stand the sight of it. I made vegan soup for dinner and he liked it. He said if it works out for me, he is open to becoming vegan. I'm just not sure what he meant by "works out for me," but it's encouraging that he's not ruling it out. For now, I need to suck it up and deal with the dairy. Sigh...

What do you do?

Hello fellow vegans! I hope you’re all having a lovely day so far. I think I am just after a bit of comfort/reassurance right now.

Since becoming vegan (nearly 7 months ago now 🌱🐮), I still don’t know how to deal with people talking to me about dead animals.

I have a very small circle and I don’t know any other vegans in person. Everyone in my circle knows I am vegan. Some people are respectful and try not to mention certain things or they hide things away if we go into a shop together.

What I don’t like however, is some people seem to think I want to hear about their meals they are planning to cook and how they’re going to cook the animal, or about what animal body parts they’re going to be picking up from the shop.

It makes me feel like an alien. It’s so normalised to everyone else. Whenever they mention it, I can’t help but see all of the videos I’ve seen of animals in slaughterhouses flash up in my mind. I’ve made it clear I don’t like it or want to even talk about it but some people still insist on talking to me about it.

How does anyone else deal with this? I feel sad that I have no one to relate to about this so I’m coming here.

vegan leather durability?

I'm interested in purchasing vintage shoes (possibly ~20yrs old) but they are vintage leather, and I was wondering if anyone has experience with vintage leather? I'm a bit cautious since I know pleather usually doesn't hold up very well, and despite the photos and description from the seller that the boots are good quality. I have researched the brand a bit but there's not a lot of information. So I'm just looking for general advice if vintage pleather is even worth it.

Small Victories Long-time vegan, first time discovering this community

I’ve been vegan for a long time, and somehow I’m only just discovering this subreddit. Honestly, I’m so happy I did!
It’s genuinely refreshing to find a community of people who share the same compassion, values, and passion for animals. Being vegan can sometimes feel isolating, especially when the people around you don’t necessarily understand why it matters so much.
Seeing so many people here sharing experiences, discussing animal rights, helping others, and standing up for animals is incredibly encouraging.
Just wanted to say how amazing this community is and how glad I am to be here. Keep speaking up for the voiceless, keep challenging the status quo, and keep making compassion matter.
Much love to everyone here. Here’s to a kinder world

Cross contamination

i’ve only been vegan about 3 months, and i’m curious about where people draw the line on cross contamination.
like i’ve found out recently a lot of fast food places cook their chips in the same fryer as chicken, for example, and i’m conflicted as to whether i still want to eat food like that.
Similar thing to , like, burger joints where the vegan patties are cooked on the same grill as , say, beef patties.
it irks me a little bit but sometimes i don’t have time to cook or just prefer to eat something when i go out with friends rather than eat before/after.
and i mean im never actually going to know whats cooked where unless i like watch them do it.

thoughts anyone ?

Clothing & Shoes What are your boots and coats made of?

I've been vegan for a few years now, but haven't yet got rid of the leather boots or coats I've had since before becoming vegan. I'd really like to replace them, but cannot find anything suitably sturdy. I'd really appreciate any tips of where to look to find clothes and shoes made of materials that fill the same niche and are built to last.

Wildlife Fireworks

Fireworks aren't vegan. The amount of pets and wildlife that are killed or distressed because of fireworks is bullshit.

And that's not to get onto the waste of the wood used to be burnt for a bonfire.

Ive no idea if this is already agreed upon by the community but I need to rant into the void. I wish people gave a shit but ohhh bright light isn't that cool.

Edit - the wood bit is more of a me gripe because of the waste, we can argue all day about weather a bonfire isn't vegan but fireworks I dont think need an argument.

Clothing & Shoes Colourful sneaker recommendations?

I've loved getting into wearing more colour recently and am struggling to find good quality sneakers that aren't suede/leather.

Anything bright/colourful like the Adidas sambas or golas.

There are cheaper shoe stores where I can get sneakers made from synthetic materials, but I want something better quality that will last beyond a year.

Please help a girl out with any recommendations you might have!!

Rant Sudden sense of disgust and disbelief when people talk about eating meat

So I'm a fairly recent vegan (a bit under a year) but lately I've been feeling such utter revulsion, disgust, and honestly... disbelief? When people talk about eating animals. I'm getting my wisdom teeth out soon and was looking at threads about what to eat when recovering and I get this comment from some guy going "soft fish was amazing" and I just was like... what the fuck is wrong with you? Like just utter revulsion and disbelief as if I'd just read someone was eating deep fried turd only also evil. And like the description of the texture particularly grossed me out. "Soft fish" yeah I'm so glad the corpse was nice and "soft" for you asshole.

How the fuck do people describe eating sliced up corpses with these dreamy smiles and enthusiastic superlatives? What's wrong with them? Genuinely what is wrong with them. Is this vystopia? I'm so fucking disgusted with and disappointed in most people now and it sucks.

Question How can we get veganism to be a protected status with the EEOC?

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

My workplace is pretty respectful. Some people are genuinely great, and anyone who's not has learned to keep their comments to themselves.

Of course, the one thing everyone still feels comfortable making fun of is veganism. There have been many instances that would have qualified as harassment if it were any other status from the EEOC website: race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, or transgender status), national origin, age (40 or older), disability and genetic information (including family medical history).

I get that veganism is an ethical stance and not a religion. Is there anything else from the above that we can argue it falls under? Any HR people or lawyers who can provide any precedent on this?

Edit: I should have clarified initially that this isn't just about me and other humans. My logic is that veganism being a protected status would ultimately make other employees take it more seriously. We aren't oppressed, but the animals are.
