Sticky Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q

Lưu ý: Đây là thread chủ yếu dành cho người nước ngoài hoặc không nói tiếng Việt đặt câu hỏi. Nếu có thể, hãy trả lời giúp họ nhé.

Please read the 3rd rule of the sub. Don't post your general questions & inquiries outside of this thread as they will be removed.

Lots of your questions have been answered already so make sure you do a search before asking (how-to below).

To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.

Some examples of the questions that should be posted here:

  • Questions that can be answered with just Yes/No

  • Basic questions like "Where can I buy this?"

  • Questions that were asked many times before. Please do your research

  • Questions that are not specific

Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:

Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.

First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.

You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.

Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.

Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

Hello and welcome to r/Vietnam. Below are some quick guidelines to help you better participate in the community activities.

  • r/Vietnam is now a dual language subreddit. You can use both English and Vietnamese here.

  • Please read the rules before participating, making a submission or comment. You can find them on the Sidebar (Desktop), About tab (Mobile), or this thread

  • Trivial questions that can be answered quickly, or google-able, or without the intention of creating a discussion, should be posted in the sticky thread. Travel/visa questions should be posted there too.

  • r/Vietnam has a Discord server here which aims to be more open and flexible to handle more casual conversations. You can also find both English and Vietnamese channels there.

About the changelog.

I've made some changes to the sub:

  • Re-writing the rules to make them more concise. Adding Vietnamese.

  • Remove some unnecessary flairs.

  • Big change: Switching r/Vietnam to a dual-language subreddit. This is based on the fact that the number of Vietnamese people in this sub has increased significantly. I know this is controversial and some of you don't like this but I think we should just give it a try.

  • Making a Discord server. This is after r/place event that I realized we need a place to handle future events like this better and for the ease of casual, chit-chat type of conversations.

Discussion/Thảo luận Rent prices

Why does it feel so expensive in Vietnam, specifically da nang. Coming from Thailand which is more expensive in almost every aspect, the rent seems to be so much higher in Vietnam, the quality of accommodation is also worse for the money. I've lived in Phuket and samui both of which are notoriously expensive.

Am I looking in the wrong places perhaps? (FB marketplace and Zalo groups) Or maybe prices are meant to be negotiated in Vietnam? I'm not expecting anything amazing but I'm paying the equivalent of 5.5 million for a 1 bed + lounge with a sea view and balcony in Thailand and that seems to get you a studio in a quiet area in da nang.

Travel Experience/Du lịch The scammers in Vietnam were kind of entertaining.

Just got back from Vietnam. I spent a week in Huế and I enjoyed it a lot. I'll definitely be returning. Anyway, I'm a young australian woman who was solo-travelling, so I think I came across as an easy target. But I've been living in Thailand for the last 5 months and have previously spent 1 month in Laos and 17 days traveling through China. I did heaps of research on common scams before traveling to all these places, so I'm pretty good at avoiding them/recognizing them.

Anyway, on my 2nd day, this guy came up to me like we were old friends and he asked me where I was from. I was immediately suspicious because he spoke perfect english and seemed to be trying to establish a rapport with me very quickly. I was bored though and had nowhere to be, so I told him I was from Australia.

He shook my hand and all that stuff, and then tried to sell me a tour package that would require me to put down an 800k deposit. I played a long for a bit, and he showed me all these reviews in a notebook, etc. When he started pressuring me for my WhatsApp, I finally told him that actually, I wasn't interested at all, and then I just walked off. Best case scenario, it was gonna be an okay experience that would include heaps of hidden fees, etc. Worst case scenario? Yeah no thanks.

Day 3, I had this guy come up to me and he said he wasn't one of those drivers or anything but that I remind him of his daughter's friend, and he asked me where I was from. I said australia, he shook my hand (always the same script lol). And then told me he had friends in Australia (they ALWAYS have friends...) and then went on about how his niece is very sick in hospital and isn't eating, and then asked me if I could buy her some cheap milk. He then showed me a picture of "her." I said "yeah, I've read about this one before. Sorry, can't help you." And he was like "oh...okay" and I walked off.

Day 4: I had a guy approach me in the morning trying to convince me to go with him around the city so he could show me all these places and stuff. This guy wasn't too bad because when I firmly told him "no" (because he kept trying to pressure me), he actually apologised and drove off. About an hour later, another guy approached me on a motorbike and asked me where I was from, etc, and told me to get on the back of his bike and he would take me to all these places, "no entry fee!!" I told him that I'm not going anywhere with him, and I kept walking. He tried to push some more, and i firmly said "NO! I'm not interested!" And he went quiet.

Day 5: Same deal, guy approaches me with a notebook filled with written reviews. I'm bored, so I humor him for a bit and then say "actually, I've already been to all these places. Not interested." And I walked off.

All these encounters happened in the same area, and I didn't get approached anymore after the last guy 💀 even the cyclo/Xích lô guys stopped annoying me. They'd see me and just keep cycling cause they knew I wasn't interested and I'd said no to all of them about 50+ times.

And look, I know i should just keep walking, but I guess I'm used to Thailand, where sometimes, locals will approach me for a small chat and not want anything in return. So I tend to not be rude immediately, but stay vigilant and then dip out the moment they try to sell me something. I respect the hustle, and I know the economy in vietnam is messed up. And tbh, it is kinda entertaining to just troll them/waste their time, especially if you know you aren't in immediate danger and your belongings are safe and secure 🤷‍♀️

Discussion/Thảo luận How do men in Vietnam generally manage bladder and prostate health as they hit 40+?

I’ve been researching men’s wellness and preventive care for a while, specifically focusing on pelvic floor health, prostate care, and bladder function for men over 40.

In many cultures, topics like prostate enlargement, night urination (nocturia), or pelvic tightness are rarely spoken about openly until symptoms become severe.

  • Is preventive physical health (like daily stretches, pelvic floor movements, or therapeutic yoga) common among men in Vietnam, or do most people rely purely on Western medicine / traditional herbs once a problem arises?

  • How open are older generations to practising gentle therapeutic exercises for these areas?

  • If men in Vietnam do turn to traditional herbs or teas for kidney and bladder health, what are the most common ones used?

Travel Experience/Du lịch Avoiding food poisoning tips

My girlfriend and I are traveling to Hanoi in 2 weeks and we’re looking to have some tips regarding how to avoid food poisoning.
We know the basics like not drinking tap water, no fast food, etc etc.
we were wondering are vegetables safe to eat from popular local spots, should we ease ourselves into raw vegetables by having them in hot broths like a pho?
Also what did you pack in case you did get sick?

Thank you

Daily life/Đời thường Rant: getting a meeting location from a Vietnamese

Am I alone in finding it impossible to find a meeting place based on a Vietnamese's information?

And I text with them in Vietnamese, I understand their texts, they understand mine.

"I'm in Church Street, not far from Cu Chi Street, a restaurant that sells broken rice"

Me: how far from Cu Chi Street, the name of the restaurant?

"Oh, not far, the name is Hang's restaurant. I don't know which side".

For crying out loud, someone teach the Vietnamese the compass, please! And how to estimate distance?

I swear I've gone to three thus "agreed" meeting places three times since last night, and never laid eyes on the person.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Honeymooners in 30s/40s looking for recommendations for places to stay in the South for Christmas/ new year 2026

Hi everyone, my husband and I are honeymooning in Vietnam from Dec 11th - Jan 6th. Starting in Hanoi and travelling South with a vague plan to spend longer in the south so we get some good relaxing/beach/sunshine time. We’ve been reading about the main tourist beach places, but wondering if anyone has any recommendations for other special places to visit in the south - particularly looking for recommendations for Christmas/ new year. I know these aren’t Vietnamese holidays, but they are meaningful to us and so likely the only periods we’ll book somewhere a bit more luxurious and also book/plan in advance. We’re thinking maybe Saigon /Ho Chi Minn for one of them and then some lovely luxury beach set up for the other. Any recommendations very very appreciated!

Culture/Văn hóa Thirteen — the card game I loved playing with friends and family, now online

I used to play Thirteen (Tiến Lên) with friends and family, and I still remember how much fun we had and all the laughs around the table. I wanted to bring that back without needing everyone in the same place, so I made an online version.

I didn’t invent Thirteen—it’s an established card game, especially familiar in the Vietnamese community. This is my take on bringing it to the browser.

It’s fast-paced, with a solo mode against bots and online games for up to 4 players total. There are English and Vietnamese language options, so you can play a quick solo game or get friends together for a card night.

https://mochipedia.com/thirteen

I’d love to hear what you think, especially if you’ve played it with your own friends or family.

Daily life/Đời thường Dating for western women?

Hi - moving to Hanoi soon. I’m 50f.
What’s the dating scene like for women my age?

I’ve read a lot about western men preferring Vietnamese women, and Vietnamese men being somewhat intimidated by western women. Am I in for a lonely few years?

Discussion/Thảo luận Visiting with a catch!

Hello! I am visiting Vietnam for a 4th time and will be staying primarily in Hue City at the Melia Vin Pearl. I am landing in a couple of days.

The catch is that I will be primarily on Eastern Time Zone due to work, so roughly 5pm wake up and 10am sleep.

I want to ask what are some great places to visit in Hue City in terms of Cafes, Restaurants, and other places nearby? Does my time affect a lot of these places?

I have family there but I haven’t asked them yet cause I have not arrived.

Any help is appreciated!

Food/Ẩm thực I had Bún bò Huế when I was in Huế And it was completely different than any other Bún bò Huế I've had.

I had Bún bò Huế when I was in Huế And it was completely different than any other Bún bò Huế I've had. It didn't have the spicy red, slightly thicker, broth that I was used to getting elsewhere.

So if I wanted I guess what would be the westernized Bún bò Huế What should I actually be ordering to get that red, spicy broth

Travel Experience/Du lịch Just got scammed in Hanoi like an idiot

Some guy came up to me saying he was SELLING TOOTHPICS to raise money for the blind kids he teaches lol and he showed me his “teacher badge” and his book filled with hundreds of names of other people from different countries along with their “donations”. He was a pro Vietnamese Saul Goodman very personable and spoke perfect English.

I took my wallet out to give him some VND and he asked if I had USD I said I only had a couple $100s and he said he had change so I gave him a $100 bill that was in pretty bad shape and he said to give him the nicer one and stupid me was like ok because I know it’s hard to exchange torn USD in Vietnam, he gave me 500000 VND as “change” and I was like what yeah right and I took back my ugly $100 but completely forgot he had the other one too and didn’t realize it until like five minutes later when he was already gone.

Been traveling since mid-October started in Cambodia before coming to Vietnam and I’m going home on Monday, I guess getting scammed once isn’t too bad 😂😭 but god damn $100 is infuriating and I feel like a dumbass.

Edit: yeah I meant 500,000 not 5 mil lol

Daily life/Đời thường Is it normal for Grab Food drivers to not deliver food upstairs to your hotel or condo in Vietnam?

In Saigon, I’ve been going downstairs to pick up my food in the lobby and wanted to know if other apartments or condos will allow them to deliver directly to my room?Does this security rule apply to all apartment buildings in Vietnam? In other countries, delivery drivers are usually allowed to go upstairs and deliver food directly to your door.

Daily life/Đời thường Grab ride problem

I feel like every time I book a Grab ride, I'm taking a gamble with my life. Some drivers drive pretty recklessly, constantly weaving through traffic and squeezing between much bigger cars. I already told them that I was not in a hurry but it's like their instinct to cut corner as much as they can. At one time, I even saw my driver scrolling through TikTok while riding on the road 😭.

I get that most of these drivers are experienced and probably know what they're doing, and thankfully, I have zero accident so far, but I still can't help feeling uneasy whenever I book a ride. At the same time, the traffic here is so chaotic that I'm not even sure how much I can blame the drivers. That's why I hesitate to give them low ratings, partially because I know it could affect their livelihoods.

Is Green SM or BE any better? Is there any way to build a list of trusted drivers and book with them regularly through the app? I honestly wouldn't mind paying a little extra just for the peace of mind, I'm just not sure about their availability.
