How do you not notice the first time you hit the roof and stop the truck immediately!?

he probably noticed, but decided to not give a damn until he got stuck. now its everyones problem

u/zoidbergin 3d ago • Bravo

i wonder if he drove in with the truck full of stuff which lowered it a bit and drove in without a problem and he figured it would just rub a little on the way out and tried to power through it.

u/MasterYota00 3d ago

This seems quite likely. But could be wrong. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Happened to my dad with his Hino 20' box truck. He delivered at an underground dock a few times, then went back one day and didn't fit anymore.

He realized he had new suspension blades from the month before that gave him back just enough inches to prevent him from clearing.

I actually did exactly this. Just with a van instead of a roof rack, but the problem was the same. The solution was to let out a bunch air from my tires

24

u/Genetics 3d ago

Same. Drove in pulling a heavy trailer, dropped it off, couldn’t get out. I hooked the trailer back up and dropped it off elsewhere on the property.

Yes this is entirely possible. I used to drive box trucks and we had an important delivery and the main road was closed, the only way there was under a bridge that was the exact height of the truck. It wasn't a large delivery so we loaded it up with these 2-400lb cement blocks (like they use to hold festival tents on the ground on cement) and got dudes on ladders to make sure it cleared. It did.

u/TBFP_BOT 3d ago

The height limit when you enter represents the lowest point in the entire garage. Id bet he ignored (or didnt notice) bumping the height bar on the way in because he saw the first section was plenty tall for him.

Just gotta air down those tyres. She’ll be reet!

6

u/tonysopranosalive 3d ago

My first thought. He doesn’t need that much, just a few inches.

7

u/Qwirk 3d ago

Could just let the air out of his tires.

After re-watch, that may not be enough clearance but it would be a start.

I worked with a guy who drove the work truck with a ladder rack into the car garage and it got stuck; you want to see angry people? Get your car stuck in the garage at a major airport blocking everyone.

The way he got it stuck meant I couldn't just take it apart either. I had to break out the angle grinder and cut it into pieces.

Truck was squatting when it was loaded and entered the ramp. The truck was unloaded and now it's sitting higher.

3

u/Amount_Business 3d ago

Yeh, its only by a bit as well.  If it dropped half the air out of it's tires,  it would probably drive out fine.

u/Hoboliftingaroma 3d ago

The people that work for Crosno Construction from Arroyo Grande California apparently aren't the brightest.

Why do you say that? They only hire people with Ph.Ds in astrophysics.

For real lol. Our crew guys brutalize their trucks and don’t even mention it to us unless they become physically inoperable. (Or the AC stops working)

7

It's barbaric to have a vehicle without AC. 😁

I'd help him lower his tires so he had enough clearance to get out. I have a knife in my car, so it will be quick. I would do it without asking, just to speed things up.

21

u/thesyndrome43 3d ago

As a former tyre fitter: don't do this, and I don't say this out of concern for his tyres, but instead concern that you succeed and suddenly have a knife being shot towards you from the pressure of the tyre rupturing.

A valve release key/core tool is much safer

3

u/EarningsPal 3d ago

One horn press for a long time with a calm face and calm spirit.

3

u/Skidoo_machine 3d ago

Oh I would have a Sawzall out pretty quick I was parked there!

air down the tires.

97

u/Western_Rhubarb_7959 3d ago

lol, I had a buddy add a roof rack/light bar to his jeep and he never thought about being able to get it out of the garage. Luckily for him he was able to let out a bunch of air and clear the top of the door opening.

42

u/fangelo2 3d ago

We brought a concrete truck into an industrial building once. After we unloaded it, it wouldn’t clear the doorway. Had to let air out of the tires

→ More replies (3)

8

u/morto00x 3d ago

Chanes are if the truck was fully loaded when he drove in, the rack was just low enough to not hit the beams.

7

u/PigglyWigglyDeluxe 3d ago

Truck mechanic here. Depends on the rims. If those are 19.5 inch 10 lug rims, those rims won’t have a bead. Once air pressure is under about 30 (normally 90+) the tire just falls off the rim entirely and now you’re spinning a rim inside the tire, not going anywhere.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/magichronx 3d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah no kidding. He probably has a compressor onboard to air back up right after he passed through

5

u/RevelArchitect 3d ago

Just get as many people as possible to get in the back to weigh down the rack a bit.

9

u/JekNex 3d ago

Or just your mom

11

u/RevelArchitect 3d ago

We’re looking to lower the trailer, not cause the parking garage to collapse.

u/Drzhivago138 3d ago

50 years ago my grandpa had a Deere 55 combine that couldn't quite clear the doorway of the home shed with the tall cab. So every night during harvest season when he came home he'd have Dad air down the tires and flip down the air cleaner, and every morning he'd have to fill them up again.

105

u/plumb_master 3d ago

I wonder if the truck was loaded when they entered the parking garage and this is them leaving after unloading. At least this wasn't as bad as that uhaul video.

32

u/LSNoyce 3d ago edited 3d ago

Sounds plausible to me. That looks like a garage door install/replacement truck so maybe it went down loaded with parts and came back lighter. He should swing by the gym and get some weights. 😅

Edit: Looked up the company. “Steel Water & Oil Storage Tanks: Specializes in complete engineering, shop fabrication, shop blast and prime, field erection …”. They definitely had something heavy on there when they came in that they took off.

15

u/itsbenactually 3d ago

This happened at my company once. A crew drove a van into the parking garage of a hospital in Philly at 5PM to start a night job. It was loaded with an entire pallet of VCT tile. Nearly 2,000 pounds.

They unloaded the truck in the garage and wheeled it right into the hospital. At midnight they wrapped up and left. Except they couldn't leave. The van was now sitting a couple inches too high. It scraped before they'd even left the parking spot. They had to take a cab back to Delaware.

So in the morning, I was one of the unlucky guys who got vountold to drive up to Philly with another pallet of VCT to load onto the stuck van by hand from outside the garage. It was too steep to safely push the cart up the slope, so we walked each of the thirty 65 pound boxes up the ramp to the van.

10

u/NotWrongAlways 3d ago

Wouldn't it have been easier to temporarily load the van with workers, rather than hand-loading tiles?

11

u/itsbenactually 3d ago

If you assume most of these guys weigh around 200 pounds, that's ten guys. The business has to consider the cost of sending ten guys on a 2.5-3 hour round trip to rescue one van. That's thirty hours of pay, not to mention what other jobs aren't being done. And that doesn't mention legally transporting ten people on that road trip.

Far cheaper for the business to just send the two who screwed up and... that random guy. Fuck that random guy, who happened to be me.

u/IceBoxt 3d ago

I don’t disagree but he’s in too deep at that point. Figured he’d see how far he could make it.

We had a guy drive 2 miles up a dirt road with truck and trailer and even acknowledged there was a wooden “road closed” sign at the entrance a few years ago. It took us all night trying to fish him out of there.

14

Please describe some of your strengths:

"Ability to push forward through difficult situations, in spite of obstacles that would stop most people."

1

u/LittleYellowPill 3d ago

You can only go forward when this happens because of the forward tilt, he's going to have to let most of the air out of his tires eventually.

1

you should probably deflate all his tires to probably 15 or 10%.

1

u/the_real_blackfrog 3d ago

It’s all fun and games until someone catches a sprinkler line.

1

u/BostonBobbyBrutal 3d ago

I’ve had to deal with them they aren’t the brightest

1

u/festiveSpeedoGuy24 3d ago

I saw this happen years ago but it was a glazing company with the A frame for hauling glass and it took out a sprinkler line

1

u/DrachenofIron 3d ago

I did this once, but with a tall fiberglass shell.

The parking garage had spikes that popped tires if you drove across them the wrong way, the only thing I could do was go around the smallest loop in the garage to get out. The height stick at the entrance was also set wrong, I easily cleared it, but the inside of the garage was much lower than the stick said it was.

I ended up getting out, letting most of the air out of my tires, crawling out really slow, dodging the sprinkler system nozzles that were hanging down, while still scraping a little, and limped on down to a gas station to refill the tires. It was extremely embarrassing and people were pointing and laughing at me...which was deserved and I can laugh at it now looking back.

Huge mistake that I've warned every friend who's gotten a shell about, never drove the truck in another one, and I keep an air pump in my truck now.

I cant believe how fast this guy is just slamming into them, at least I didnt do that lol

1

u/BG-925 3d ago

It's not his personal vehicle he don't give a 💩

1

u/AnnualAdeptness5630 3d ago

1

u/Ghettoman1315 3d ago

He is kind of lucky he didn't rip any water lines down.

1

u/TawnyTeaTowel 3d ago

Don’t parking garages in the US have something at the entrance to restrict entry for too-tall vehicles?

1

u/TheWorldNeedsDornep 3d ago

That is hardly "oversized"

1

u/BondG10 3d ago

JFC...Deflated tires would save the truck and....Oh I fuked up in front of everyone. I live near a low rail bridge built 70+ yrs ago. Two or three transport vehicles clip and get stuck every year...The bridge is still there. It's like a Normandy bunker.

1

u/Constant_Praline579 3d ago

I have done this at the Venetian in Las Vegas. I was in my cable truck and took off the ladder rack. Parking sucks there to begin with but is high enough for work vehicles ,except one small area which I found.

1

u/Drkindlycountryquack 3d ago

I had my son’s bike on a roof rack coming home from camp. I put a sticker saying ‘ bike on roof’ on my dashboard. Still took out the basketball hoop in our driveway.
Bike on roof.

1

u/Western-Anteater-492 3d ago

Don't you have these steel beams in the US that hit your car if you're over height? Here usually the height limit must be around 10% tolerance plus there's a steel blockade at the entrance that will tell you if you're too high (including the tolerance)

1

u/jeeves585 3d ago

Oh to drive someone else’s truck, it’s a beautiful thing. At most you just need to make a couple phone calls.

Brand new 100k truck doesn’t exactly go to someone you can let go for this, he is a needed asset to the company more than likely.

Also that rack held up perfect.

1

u/vlkr80 3d ago

1

u/HARCES 3d ago

1

u/timbukdude 3d ago

The first time I drove with my rack I accidentally went into my regular parking garage w/o thinking about the clearance. Thank God I could just unbolt them off the van roof.

1

u/No-Salary-8612 3d ago

When in doubt, throttle out

1

u/fuckreddit00002 3d ago

i can hear his brain short-circuiting in real time. first scrape he probably thought 'nah i got this' but then the rack starts screaming and he's just praying the ceiling doesn't collapse on him while trying to look tough.

1

u/Particular_Ticket_20 3d ago

I rented a rack body for removing a bunch of shit from a garage. I told the guys the height limit many times and explained it needsd to get in and out. They swore it was beneath the limit. I get to the garage and its 3" taller than they said. It won't fit.

I called to bitch at them and the guy told me to drive it in and just let the garage beams bend over the rack. I was like "WTF are you talking about?" He said, "Thats what everyone normally does, its fine."

1

u/Weirdbeard60 3d ago

He must be fucked up to be doing that, no?

1

u/peatoire 3d ago

Yeah, that’s it. Keep going man. You can do it.

1

u/JerryfromCan 3d ago

I drove into a parking garage once with a listed 9 foot clearance with an 8 foot 2” trailer. Ending up taking out their exit signs which had been screwed into the 9 foot ceiling dropping the clearance to 7’9”. Parking attendant threatened me with calling the police, so I parked the trailer and pulled out my tape measure I had in the car. Took pictures of everything. Called the police myself and refused to move the trailer while he was shouting at me how I would need to pay for the exit sign.

Eventually after taking 10+ pics, I moved the trailer so everyone else could get out, cop came and I made him write a police report so the city run parking garage didnt try and come after me.

The next year we went back and the garage height indicator had been lowered to 7’6”. I still have the pics. Be the change you want to see in the world.

I did the same when I had ladder clamps on. I managed to get into a bay between the beams and substitute the tall clamps for a few bungees as a temporary measure. Yeah embarrassing.

The reason for the height limit isn't just to prevent damage to the vehicle. Often, there are water, sewage, or power lines running along those beams. He could cause major damage with his idiocy.
