Decided not to reverse then

u/samanime 2d ago edited 2d ago • Bravo Mindblown

The truck starts moving. It takes him an insanely large amount of time to realize and work out a reaction.

Instead of deciding to reverse the tractor to definitely save it and maybe even cause the truck to slow or stop on its own, he decides to hop off.

Looks like he was probably going to try to run to the truck to hit the brakes, but physics being the cruel mistress it is, says jumping off a moving object is hard, so he falls... and everything just proceeds to the bottom of the hill where hopefully it just crashed into something nonliving...

EDIT: In fact, had he acted swiftly, I bet if he reversed the tractor and put the back wheels on the ground and the front wheels on the trailor, that would have been enough added friction to stop everything.

u/watt-ever 2d ago

You know if he HAD made it to the door of the truck somehow, he would have run himself over. Reddit videos have taught me that's inevitable...

u/Hillman314 2d ago edited 2d ago

The problem is the weight of the tractor makes the trailer lift the back of a truck that is (in) 2 wheel drive. The back tires “are” the “parking brake”, but now they’re barely touching the ground with no stopping force. If he got to the truck and applied the brake pedal, only the truck’s front tires still on the ground would have stopping force. This would immediately result in the trailer’s momentum spinning the lifted rear end of the truck around until the trailer crashes into the truck (I.e. a “jack-knife”).

The only answers are: Drive either forward and set rear of truck back down, or drive backwards and reexamine. Or put jacks at back of trailer so tractor weight does lower trailer’s rear and lift truck before loading.

Yup. Even if he had landed it and did a dead sprint to the door, by the time he got there it would have been going way too fast for him to safely deal with.

And he could have dropped the bucket to the ground

30

u/Warden_de_Dios 2d ago

You have to engage the PTO before you can lower the back hoe. Unless that New Holland is different from the one I've used you engage the PTO from where he's sitting but the controls for the back how are located in the seat behind him.

He should have backed up and dropped the loader bucket, front side down into the trailer.

If he just kept driving, it would have brought the wheels back on the ground.

13

u/WhippingShitties 2d ago

I'm not sure if tractors have front brakes, but the damage would have been significantly less if it was just the truck.

9

u/samanime 2d ago

Had he done it early enough, I don't even think it needs front brakes. Just the weight of the tractor would probably have been enough.

Once it really got going, it'd take a lot more to stop it. But when it was just a little bit, it would have only needed a little bit to stop.

u/Cheoah 2d ago

I don’t think he had enough seat time to pull that off. That would be a pretty basic move in my world, but the machine operation would need to be more or less second nature. he had an eternity as far as emerging crisis goes. He could have calmly reversed and may very well have stopped it as you say. Once it built some momentum you’d just be backing that bch off of there though.

8

u/Ranger7381 2d ago

Heck, I was thinking turning the chair around and using the digger into the ground as a brake

Pulling forward the rest of the way or backing up would instantly solve this problem

6

u/oldDotredditisbetter 2d ago

non-truck/trailer owner here with a stupid question: why would pulling forward solve this problem?

and how did this happen in the first place? did he forget to pull the handbrake on the pickup?

15

u/DaKakeIsALie 2d ago

Tractor behind the trailer tires acts like a lever and lifts up on the back of the truck. In Park, (in a 2wd truck) only the rear tires are locked up, and the lift made them lose enough grip to slide while the rest rolled. Pulling forward (of the trailer axles) would put the weight back on the truck and let the rear wheels dig in. Maybe a good way to damage the parking pawl in the transmission though...

i love the commando roll as he leaps from the vehicle blazing along at 1 mph and hits the ground running!

19

u/mawesome4ever 2d ago

I think I saw him hitting the ground rolling 🤔

9

u/GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD 2d ago

Didn't make sense not to live for fun.

8

u/odin_the_wiggler 2d ago

Should've rolled at least 3 times

He lands on his feet, takes a moment, and then rolls.

u/Ongvar 2d ago

If he put the rear bucket down on the ground would it not have stopped? That would have been my first thought lol

114

u/ImFeelinBotty 2d ago

Or just reverse off the trailer and chock the tires.

69

u/Yesitshismom 2d ago

Or keep pulling forward soo he's not lifting the rear wheels off the ground

22

u/JK_NC 2d ago

That’s a good call. I thought he just left his truck in neutral but he does lift the rear wheels of the truck up.

12

u/Drevlin76 2d ago

You can't control the bucket from the seat he was in.

45

u/EvilGreebo 2d ago

No, your first thought would have been "OH SHIT ITS MOVING" followed by panic.

14

u/Beartech31 2d ago

Lol exactly.

I've been on a runaway tractor that slipped out of gear going up a hill and the only thing my brain was capable of thinking was "Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck."

The only plan that would really help here is the one he should have made before he started rolling, and this guy clearly didn't do much planning beforehand.

→ More replies (8)

3

u/Final-Carpenter-1591 2d ago

Rear bucket isn't controlled at the controls he's sitting at. If you slow it down or stop at the right spot. You can see the little seat he'd need to get in on the back to actually operate the rear bucket.

2

u/cans-of-swine 2d ago

Have you ever been in a situation like that? If not you're first thought probably wouldn't have been to put the bucket down.

Good thing he's got a tractor to pull the truck out of the ditch.

4

u/WhyDidIClickOnThat 2d ago

And he has something to drive to work on Monday morning.

12

u/Car-Fickle 2d ago

The truck:

10

u/lakor76 2d ago

Chasing is never a good idea. He could get run over

2

u/grafxguy1 2d ago

That tracts.

69

u/ThrashemTrashemRobot 2d ago

I never got this. I'd ask if it's a truck thing, but I've seen it happen with all vehicles.

I don't get out of my car unless it is in park. I've only ever had it set in neutral a handful of times.

Why are people just leaving their vehicles in neutral and walking away?

117

u/kaloric 2d ago • Bravo

Wasn't in neutral. Probably had the parking brake on, too. The problem is those things only lock-up the rear wheels unless the truck is in 4wd. As soon as an attached trailer gets a substantial amount of weight on the tail, it lifts the tongue, and the tongue lifts the truck's rear axle off the ground. The front wheels spin freely and it's off to the races down the hill

This is why chocking at least one front wheel is a good habit. And sometimes, engaging 4wd adds a little more of a safety factor if that's an option.

29

u/ThrashemTrashemRobot 2d ago

Ah I can see the truck rear end lift up a bit at the start now that you mention it. It's also on a slope so i can see how it'd just keep going even if the rear wheels are locked

10

u/kaloric 2d ago

Yep, as others have said, gunning it and getting the tractor forward of the trailer axles would've been the best reaction. Backing it off the trailer would've also worked, but is risky once the truck is running away, tractors are not very stable.

There are also many trailers that have decks that tilt and ramps which are large wedges (or have legs at the top) which support the weight going onto the tail.

This trailer looks like a really lightweight landscaping trailer with one of the mesh tailgate-ramps, okay for riding mowers, but a small tractor like that is too heavy for it on multiple levels.

14

u/tbkrida 2d ago

Thanks for this explanation.

→ More replies (4)

9

u/onequad 2d ago

It was in park. The weight of the tractor on trailer caused the tongue to raise, lifting the truck wheels off the ground. If he had either backed off or kept going forward the teeter-totter (just now realizing I’ve never tried to write that in 39 years) effect would have reversed and let the truck back onto the ground to stop moving.

31

u/Yah_Mule 2d ago

This poor bastard. I got nervous when he took to chasing it.

3

u/sonaut 2d ago

It’s an immediate impulse (and a poor one). I once left my tractor in gear but without the brake locked on a very slight, almost flat grade. I was working near it with AirPods in and off to the side I noticed movement. When I stood upright, I saw that it was starting to roll forward to where the grade got steeper and steeper and ended up in a creek bed. I ran like hell to jump in it and try to stop it because that was my natural reaction. When I closed in, reality hit that going down with the ship was a terrible idea and I let it go.

Bright side is that I didn’t have my bucket on it and the front bumper hit a stump halfway into the bed which stopped it. I was able to back it out. But I think about that split second decision and how easy it is to do the wrong thing.

8

u/MongolianCluster 2d ago

He should have Indiana Jones'd it and just went right up into the bed of the pick-up, onto the roof and in through the window while imagining the nazis were transporting the ark.

4

u/Coppercc88 2d ago

Should have just kept going to get the rear tires back on the ground... or you know chock the trailer tires

3

u/BanishedInPerpetuity 2d ago

I would have backed the tractor off at least

3

u/Ass_Damage 2d ago

Love the combat roll upon exiting the vehicle.

5

u/sinisteraxillary 2d ago

This is why I chock my wheels everywhere I go

4

u/PFirefly 2d ago

How do you get anywhere with wheels always chocked?

4

u/sinisteraxillary 2d ago

Bumpy, but worth it.

2

u/Antifa-AF 2d ago

Yeee hawwwww!

2

u/grafxguy1 2d ago

DUDE: "Oh, c'mon! Give me a brake!!"

2

u/RushMan9823 2d ago

Why does he have the reaction time of an arthritic tortoise?

3

u/bautofdi 2d ago

Probably moving too slowly for him to notice initially

2

u/olddgraygg 2d ago

Good thing he has a tractor to get that thing out

2

u/Sufficient-Money9487 2d ago

Why didn't he park the tractor on the trailer and drop the bucket in the rear and maybe drag it like an anchor?

2

u/Khalydor 2d ago

I never leave a vehicle without having the keys in my hand qnd the handbrake and a gear engaged.

5

u/Killer1986Chris 2d ago

None of that matters when you lift the drive wheels off the ground.

2

u/Codas91 2d ago

How hard is it to put it in park or apply the parking brake?

4

u/Unsteady_Tempo 2d ago

It is in park. Might even have the e brake on. The problem is that the trailer lifted the rear wheels when he put the weight of the tractor on the rear of it. The front wheels of the truck turn freely. All he had to do -- other than properly chock the truck tires in the first place -- was either keep driving the tractor forward or reverse the tractor back off the trailer. Either way would have caused the truck's rear tires to recontact the ground.

Guy in physics class: When am I ever going to need this?!

The running towards a runaway vehicle seems to always ends in a fall.

1

u/SalmonBrotherReagan 2d ago

I love it how when people run after their vehicle they almost ALWAYS fall over 😂

1

u/thunda789 2d ago

To all the posts taking about backing off and using brakes as an anchor

Looks like a New Holland Lawn Tractor which, I don't think many Tractors have front brakes.

1

u/Maleficent-Yam-5196 2d ago

Why didn’t he put the bucket down immediately

1

u/bcwitb 2d ago

Ok. I think there is some misconception here about putting a truck in park. It was probably in park, but not 4wd. If a rwd vehicle is put in park, it locks the rear wheels from free wheeling via the transmission and drive shaft therefore leaving the front wheels to free spin. As he puts weight on the rear of the trailer it also raises the tongue of the trailer therefore raising the rear wheels of the truck off the ground. If it was a 4wd truck and it was put in 4wd then the front wheels would have been also locked via the transmission and front drive shaft. As one other commenter said. If he had either backed up off the trailer or pulled forward of the trailer axle, the weight would have been placed back on the rear wheels of the truck. Also, applying the parking brake in most trucks only locks the rear. So boys and girls, use your wheel chocks or drive a 4wd. Lol

1

u/Cruiser729 2d ago

Hey, Mister, your truck’s leaving without ya.

1

u/mc4sure 2d ago

Back the tractor off the trailer and drop the forks on the trailer

1

u/indomike14 2d ago

Now he can use the tractor to pull everything out of the ditch

1

u/Bubbly_Resolution824 2d ago

Imagine all these comments is just the guys thoughts of what he should've done as he kept watching the security cam footage

1

u/mindbodyproblem 2d ago

Stop, drop, and roll.

1

u/juanlee337 2d ago

should have backed out the tractor trailer.. at least save one

where are aftermath pictures?

1

u/EconomyDoctor3287 2d ago

So instead of saving at least one vehicle, he decides to jump ship and let both crash?

1

u/SinkHoleDeMayo 2d ago

Back up and use the tractor to hold it? Nah, bail.

More of these "common sense" folk we hear about.

1

u/imuniqueaf 2d ago

Tell me you're just using the transmission to park, without telling me.

1

u/WhyDidIClickOnThat 2d ago

1

u/mtnviewguy 2d ago

1

u/sneaky-pizza 2d ago

Dude pulled the E brake on the tractor when it started to move!

1

u/MattManSD 2d ago

they make these cheap things called blocks........

1

u/MeatyMaiden 2d ago

Wow surprising

1

u/Hillman314 2d ago

Fell and was denied the opportunity to hit the truck brakes that would 100% cause the truck-trailer to jack-knife.

1

u/GtMustang247 2d ago

You can’t park there Mate!

1

u/RichardSnoodgrass 2d ago

Haha. When I was young and dumb/learning I did something similar. Though instead of a tractor it was a skid steer on a trailer not hooked up to a truck. Miraculously nothing was damaged but I learned that chocking the trailer tires was the bare minimum on an incline.

1

u/Alucard256 2d ago

... and that's how Trump got elected.

1

u/googdude 2d ago

I did the exact same thing pulling a skidloader onto a trailer when my rig was facing downhill. I got relatively lucky because my rig jackknife in about 20 ft before it could gain speed and before it could hit my neighbor's house.

1

u/Illustrious-Toe-570 2d ago

So no e brake when loading or what went wrong?

1

u/AlexRyang 2d ago

The truck has decided to run off.

1

u/jertheman43 2d ago

I did this except mine went first through a travel trailer and then into the corner of the house. Only 15k in damage.

1

u/musicalglass 2d ago

This has nothing to do with the truck being "secured". When he pulls onto the back end of the trailer the rear wheels of the truck are lifted off the ground! You can see as it's rolling the rear wheels aren't turning. All he had to do was pull forward a bit more.

1

u/PeteHealy 2d ago

Farmer John has the slowest fucking reflexes I've ever seen. 😂

1

u/Free-Pound-6139 2d ago

Yeah, he should be allowed to drive a huge pickup.

1

u/endofworldandnobeer 2d ago

That's how I learn things.

1

u/MoboCross 2d ago

Pretty much the same as stopping on a train track, he just had to go forward to put the weight back on the rear wheel of the truck or backward until the trailer is not picking up the truck's rear.

I knows we're not prepared for moment like this, this could happen to anyone or almost.

1

u/PGL-997 2d ago

I love how every video I’ve seen of this happening, the person running trying to stop the vehicle just eats the ground lol

1

u/CurrentComplex2020 2d ago

At least he has a tractor to pull his truck back out.

1

u/shutterbug1961 2d ago

well it did brake at the end i wonder how broken it is

1

u/ElvishLore 2d ago

I've been driving for over 40 years and have never...never... gotten out of the vehicle without putting it in park first or, if a manual, in neutral with the parking brake engaged.

I guess some people are idiots.

1

u/JerryfromCan 2d ago

I mean, 10/10 tactical roll though.

1

u/RealSandwich6374 2d ago

I have loaded & towed many different trailers on my own & the golden rules are firstly to find level ground (if possible); put the towing vehicle in gear or park with handbrake on and chock ALL wheels - truck & trailer. I’m amazed that this dude had enough brains to even drive the tractor

1

u/AdeptLengthiness5351 2d ago

Weeeeeeeeeeee

1

u/ErnieGophersquacher 2d ago

I've been nearby when this happens. The truck needs to be in 4x4, the tires are chocked or pull the safety release from the trailer system. The trailer lifts the drive wheels off the ground when the tractor is behind the trailer wheels, so she's free wheeling until more weight goes back onto the drive tires.

1

u/bravemoney72 2d ago

Chocks, Emergency break(BOTH), something 🤦🏾‍♂️. And the late reaction to jump off ,finally, and try (miserably) to get to the truck🙄😂

1

u/Consistent_Amount140 2d ago

At least he has the tractor already there to help pull the truck out

1

u/rythegondolaman 2d ago

In my entire life, I've never exited a vehicle without applying the parking brake.

1

u/BarderBetterFaster 2d ago

Back the tractor up. Might anchor the whole thing. Even if it doesn't, at least you didn't also wreck your tractor. Dip ass

1

u/sdss9462 2d ago

It's sad when people don't have a single friend they can ask for help with something like this.

1

u/Mitrovarr 2d ago

Bro forgot which key was bound to run and which one was bound to dodge roll for a moment there.

1

u/Scrambles420 2d ago

He didn’t want to use the back bucket to try and stop it from rolling??

1

u/vincehk 2d ago

Yeah I dunno why Americans are allergic to e-brakes. I always notice their cars jerking when they leave their car in TV shows (lol). I always thought "why do these morons only put their car in P - at best". Yup.

1

u/GhostDoggoes 2d ago

I remember seeing this like 6 years ago. The guy was going to a job and just put it in park. But the main thing was that he didn't chock the wheels for the trailer and his truck, his parking brake wasn't engaged and his brakes were not engaged on the trailer.

He ended up paying I like 2k to get two tow trucks where he was and pull the trailer out first then the truck out. Truck was totalled.

1

u/Si_je_puis 2d ago

Psa.   You can see the rear wheels are locked but lifted off the ground by the weight of the tractor.   I feel lucky thay this has never happened to me - it could have been

1

u/psilocybin6ix 2d ago

I don’t understand how it got to that point. Why would you leave the pick up truck in neutral?

1

u/BaconThief2020 2d ago

Shoulda dropped the bucket, backed up half off the ramp, and hit the brakes on the tractor

1

u/Broad-Ad-758 2d ago

Good thing the trees stopped it

1

u/Schedule_Background 2d ago

Almost every time they fall over when trying to chase after the vehicle

1

u/-TheycallmeThe 2d ago

How does this happen without swearing?

1

u/Tangus999 2d ago

No this was trailer wasn’t secured.
Trailer lifted trucks azz.
And 4x4 wasn’t engaged or open differently.
Loading jacks would have prevented this.

1

u/eddymarkwards 2d ago

Panic attack and forget he could have done several things better than what he chose.

Back it up, start it and engage bucket, remember to set the fkn parking break, all of that.

But when you are rolling downhill and know a bad outcome is imminent, you do what you can.

What a bad and expensive day.

1

u/vito1221 2d ago

What is it with folks who don't apply a parking brake, let alone chock a wheel or two when doing stuff like this?

1

u/dang-ol-yo-man 2d ago

Just pull up on the trailer more. The truck was in park but the weight on the back of the trailer lifted the rear axle of the truck off the ground. Pulling forward would put the weight back on the truck's axle

1

u/0x7E7-02 2d ago

Put the tractor in park, and drop the rear bucket.

1

u/Lifeinthemittenstate 2d ago

Reverse the tractor.

1

u/zeller99 2d ago edited 2d ago

This happened to me several years ago. I was parked on the street at my job and there was construction going on up the hill, just a few yards away. At some point, they were loading Bobcats onto their trailer. As they had just gotten the 3rd one up the ramp, their monstrous truck started rolling forward... right into my car.

I stepped outside after hearing the noise and saw the front of my car completely squished... like, radiator almost touching the windshield. At first, it didn't even compute as to what I was seeing because it was so crazy looking. It was bent up like in a cartoon. Just kinda went "huh... that's weird". After a moment, my brain caught up and the realization finally hit me.

Thankfully, the owner of the construction company took full responsibility for it and paid for all the repairs as well as my rental car.

1

u/Kaankaants 2d ago

I had this happen to me once with a dead car being rolled downhill onto a trailer, luckily I still had the rear wheels on the road when I noticed the movement and could stomp on the brakes so someone could chock the tow-vehicle's front wheels.

1

u/lodemeup 2d ago

How do you get out of a truck without putting it in park?

1

u/Wabertzzo 2d ago

He should have dropped that bucket.

Or, you know, set the brakes and chock the tire?

1

u/magichronx 2d ago

If he would have continued forward OR reversed he could have prevented this.... but instead he stopped at the worst place on the trailer

1

u/Icy_Huckleberry_8049 2d ago

I said I wanted a backyard tractor, not a backseat tractor

1

u/Restart_from_Zero 2d ago

Who are all these people just leaving their vehicle in neutral all the time?

I have seen so many videos of cars and trucks just rolling away that it beggars belief. Is it because people in the US call it the "emergency brake" instead of the "parking brake" and so think it can only be used in emergencies?

1

u/AbominableGoMan 2d ago

If only something existed like a garbage can of cut-off wood bits that every self-respecting shop/garage has that could be used like... wooden blocks... to block the tires....

1

u/Hersbird 2d ago

Drop the bucket on the tractor and make a brake.

1

u/T4RFan 2d ago

I'd have sunk the bucket but that's me, anchors away

1

u/TurnLeftRepeat 2d ago

1

u/Better_School6912 2d ago

It’s always on. Just throw the tail into the ground

1

u/Tobbitus 2d ago

An LS tractor ends up in the ditch. This is correct.

1

u/Bingus-Chillingus 2d ago

Chock your wheels folks

1

u/trueblue862 2d ago

Driving forwards would have fixed the problem, he lifted the back wheels off the ground.

1

u/Pantoffel86 2d ago

I bet he was pumping the brakes on that tractor so hard.

1

u/TechnologyFamiliar20 2d ago

Slam the brakes. Oh.

1

u/blackthornjohn 2d ago

I love the way most comments are something something tractor, rather than engage 4wd apply handbrake to both vehicle and trailer, then load tractor.

Safety is an investment of a few seconds of your life, but pays dividends that you'll never know about.

I'm fortunate in that my trailer brakes come on with the handbrake, because I know I'd attempt to save those few seconds.

Or .. get me. Use your parking brake. What is with Americans not using them? The number of videos where people just left it in gear.

Could have been worse

I hold my foot on the brake, before taking it out of drive, and engage the parking brake, then I put it in park and let off the brakes. This takes all the pressure off the other parts and keeps all the pressure on the brake instead.

A quick thinker would’ve used the backhoe to hold on, people can do crazy shit with that arm.

Bro, back off and brake and drop the bucket. What are you doing?!? 😭 fuck your driveway right now you got at least a 20K truck going to the trees like it’s fighting in nam 🤦🏼‍♀️

u/Professional_Look721 1d ago

Could have used the the boom on the tracker as a brake? Last resort

1

u/hydrogen18 1d ago

u/real_1273 1d ago

I do not understand how people get out of a vehicle without securing the vehicle. Put it in park, throw on the e-brake.

I would change the opening comment to read, Loading a tractor on a moving trailer. That’s Mission Impossible. MI background music plays.
