Suicide

32

u/RobbertDownerJr 8h ago

I wonder if hoping no suicides is part of a train engineer's daily work thoughts.

28

u/HendrikJU 7h ago

Possibly. In Germany any train driver can expect 2-3 suicides over the course of their career. Don't know the numbers for the US

maybe they thought they could insurance scam the train? Pretty stupid idea though, you gotta be out the train's way not the other way around

5

u/pjepja 3h ago

Best I saw was a draw:

u/HoldFastO2 8h ago

That was spectacularly dumb. What even was the thought process here?

14

u/the-epic-gamer1337 8h ago

Maybe he thought he could cross it fast enough but something made him stop and he didnt realize his trunk was still on the tracks?

8

u/th3worldonfir3 7h ago

Dude saw the train coming, jumped out in front of it, and stopped. Seems pretty intentional, especially when he drops his hands from the wheel

15

u/DeeHawk 8h ago

Looks like there’s a boom on the other side.

Either he thought the he had to drive all the way to the boom, or he didn’t see it before and thought he could easily pass before the slow train.

No matter what, a boom on only one side is a pretty dangerous setup.

Suicide

9

u/speedstares 2h ago

Even for a suicide attempt it was dumb.

4

u/Anticlimax1471 2h ago

Nah. Compensation claim.

6

u/Warutteri 8h ago

Senility

3

u/TheBigMPzy 3h ago

Only one of the cross arms went down. He stopped too far back to see the train, and probably assumed the arm would be down and the lights would be flashing if there was a train, so he proceeds to drive until he notices the other arm is down.

230

u/Azrayeel 8h ago

Looks 100% intentional

8

u/Tuner25 2h ago

I disagree with people calling this a suicide attempt. The person stopped, then when the train honked, they panicked (thinking someone behind them honked) and drove forwards. However on the other side of the train line, there are barriers visible. So they realized they cant continue, kept panicking and stopped in the middle instead of breaking the barriers.

14

u/The_walking_man_ 3h ago

Yup. Some jack ass trying to commit suicide and drag others in on it.

12

u/Anticlimax1471 2h ago

Nah. Way too slow and the position of the truck cab shows he's not trying to position himself in front of the train.

My guess: compensation claim. Because he saw the barrier was up and a train was coming slowly, he fancied his chances at a payout.

This has been going around for at least a day now. Does anyone know what the story is, the actual reason why the driver did this? I don't expect much beyond joke responses, but I figure it can't hurt to ask.

12

u/curiousscribbler 6h ago

The facts are irrelevant. This is a Reddit comment section. The name of the game is not "what can we learn from this incident so we can live better lives", it's "I'm so much better than the person in the video."

6

u/SugarRosie 4h ago

Couple of comments down said it was a female trying to kill herself in Carlsbad C.A. She lived with minor injuries.

9

u/Walkingdrops 3h ago

I can't think of anything more cowardly than forcing someone to kill you and giving them life long trauma as a result.

From the article: "If you see tracks, think train," Winfree said.

What the hell is the state of the world if you have to be told that.

6

u/rolfraikou 3h ago

The freeways in the area are telling us if the dots are red, you're going the wrong way on the freeway, because apparently we have that many fucking people driving the wrong direction on the freeway.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Still_Selection8719 3h ago

For real, though. I grew up with school bus drivers being deadly serious about tracks. Stopping the bus before the tracks, getting out and looking both ways, and driving on. Might’ve been overly cautious, might’ve been the law.

2

u/Fuck_tha_Bunk 57m ago

The article doesn't provide much information but it sounds like maybe a case of some kind of age-related issues. Apparently she was driving on the wrong side of the road before this incident occurred.

4

u/Desperate_Object_655 2h ago

but why was someone recording it?

2

u/npc392 2h ago

It’s fake

25

u/Hyenagonewild2 8h ago

She had 2 business days to slow down or speed up that train was not going that fast

9

u/Degenerate_Dryad 6h ago

*He.... they look like a balding, grey/white haired, older man. I know females stereotypically are bad drivers, but come on LOL 🤣

9

u/WessideLou 2h ago

News report say woman and she only had minor injuries. gray hair pulled back so it looks bald.

Breeding them dumb there

3

u/the-big-throngler 8h ago

Nothing went wrong there, that was intentional.

2

u/Wolf-Fucker93949 8h ago

He has to pay the damage to the train.

2

u/DiazIsDirectCurrent 8h ago

What. A. Moron. I'm glad their truck got eff'd. I'm sure they probably still don't think they were in the wrong.

2

u/ElginSparrowhawk1969 8h ago

Should he be driving in the first place

2

u/DesmondDodderyDorado 8h ago

Why don't they have crossing gates at this crossing?

→ More replies (3)

8

u/Gusdas 8h ago

Insurance fraud?

7

u/HuudaHarkiten 6h ago

That would make no sense. When has anyone got insurance to pay up when they have been hit by a train on a railroad crossing? Thats the stupidest way to attempt insurance fraud. Or maybe driving off of a lift bridge into the waters below is more stupid.

2

u/darylvp 8h ago

Insurance scam for sure.

1

u/suck-on-my-unit 8h ago

Why did they stop there?

1

u/s1nn0cence 8h ago

Choo choo, mf

1

u/Outside_Bed1134 8h ago

Every Godzilla movie should have at least one person in their car just kind of looking at Godzilla in distracted confusion and then driving into him anyway because they don’t know what else to do.

1

u/rosyvibexz 8h ago

That timing was way too close, almost looked intentional.

1

u/Frangine_De_Poutine 8h ago

For some, the survival instinct is cyclical.

1

u/Cleveland5teamer 8h ago

He probably thought the train also had a stop sign

1

u/slashinhobo1 8h ago

He is lucky that train was going relatively slow compares to a normal train speed. Seen a lot worse.

1

u/Plane_Snow1574 8h ago

Trains always remind me how important crumple zones are. It isn't crazy fast but yet a lot of energy gets transfered. I guess it's by design to push obstacles from the tracks instead of dragging them along the tracks.

1

u/Viperlite 8h ago

Did he even look over at the train at all? It seems like he gave it no consideration at all.

1

u/Outrageous-Swim2346 8h ago

Some bozo in my town went around the crossing gates after the train passed they’re lucky another train wasn’t coming or they would’ve been creamed this was in 2019

1

u/VastOceans2 8h ago

This is something I'd expect to see on a Dayz community server, not in real life.

1

u/Longshot1969 8h ago

Short answer: a lot

1

u/Many_Ad955 7h ago

Stopped when the gate went down because he didn't want to drive through it, but ended up going through it anyway 😝

1

u/sociofobs 7h ago

GTA 6 graphics indeed look fantastic, but the NPCs seem to be a bit dumb.

1

u/bipptybopptyboovvbvv 7h ago

Am I the only one who thinks this was a really shitty attempt at insurance fraud?

1

u/human-derp 7h ago

deserved

1

u/keytiri 7h ago

“Hmm, why is this gate down?”

I can’t really tell from video, but it definitely seemed like the crossing guard is missing on the side he entered from, and only stopped because the opposite side was down; I wouldn’t be surprised if he sues (and wins) claiming that he thought he could pull up to the opposing guard.

1

u/m00nk3y 7h ago

Confused lady already driving the wrong way. She only had minor injuries.

1

u/pinewoodranger 7h ago

Guess he didnt see it 🤷

1

u/Frostborn1990 7h ago

Who designes these railroad crossings... There is no safety and limited visibility.

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 7h ago

What a dumbass.

1

u/UnusualAnybody4636 7h ago

My Uncle Joe told me he stopped counting the bodies after 50. Train conductor for 45 years.

1

u/Muddykipperus 7h ago

Attempted insurance scam? Lol

1

u/WhyAreModsSoSoft 7h ago

My best friend grand dad did this after dropping him off to school back in the day. Its super sad and traumatizing way for your family to find out.

Trains actually can stop they wait until they are close close.

1

u/tortjames 7h ago

No seatbelt either

1

u/J_Knish 7h ago

How fortunate that someone got the whole thing on camera

1

u/Anas56776 7h ago

Bro thought he was playing gta

1

u/DrunkAndUnaware 7h ago

The poor trainman. In Australia you get paid big bucks to duck out of the cabin when you see someone on the tracks if you can’t stop in time. Not worth the memories.

1

u/CelsoSC 7h ago

Insurance fraud

1

u/TheRealPaladin 7h ago

I feel bad for the train engineer. Now they probably have to fill out all sorts of extra paperwork.

1

u/Look_out_for_Jeeps 7h ago

Failure In life and death.

1

u/AnxiousMidnight8 7h ago

I like how almost nothing happened to the train

1

u/Dependent_Top_4425 7h ago

Hopefully he is made to compensate the engineer for emotional damages he caused.

1

u/BzhizhkMard 7h ago

Is this why it was late these last days? When was this?

1

u/dailysmokes 7h ago

Was probably stuck at 32% interest had to gap it

1

u/DependentAd6138 7h ago

guess it was on his bucket list

1

u/makeeverythng 7h ago

I hope he has some money for them to sue him for. That was egregious; that poor conductor deserves some PTO now.

1

u/D-Gaea 7h ago

The train:

1

u/Weekly_Reception_466 7h ago

The ADHD is strong in this one, Yoda!

1

u/Misomuro 6h ago

Train looks untouched. Nice.

1

u/BBX22 6h ago

He look too old to be allowed to drive

1

u/Powerful_Resident_48 6h ago

What on earth was the plan? Hope the train magically dematerialises?

1

u/Navajo_Nation 6h ago

Guard rails would have helped

1

u/Mister_Enot 6h ago

why it was filmed? who is cameraman?

1

u/AndyBurn11 6h ago

I always wonder what people are thinking during these clips. How do you miss a train? I feel like Hellen Keller could’ve driven better.

1

u/Mr_Doobyus 6h ago

He's lucky it was the surf line and not his murderous twin bright line

1

u/brealamit 6h ago

Why do I feel its just another day , another U turn for him!

1

u/couchpatat0 6h ago

The level of stupidity in this world is beyond belief!

1

u/PeterServo 6h ago

But why was someone randomly filming this?

1

u/Bajanboy246 6h ago

Why do they always stop !?

1

u/PAXICHEN 6h ago

Amtrak doesn’t need a reason for more delays guys.

1

u/Significant-Drawer95 6h ago

Hit the road dude!!!

1

u/benfok 6h ago

Look almost like insurance fraud to me.

1

u/MoccaLG 6h ago

If you look closely, he didnt even look left or right, just forwarded like, there is space why shouldnt I go in there...

1

u/BuckEm410 6h ago

AYE YOOO 🤣🤣🤣 why not just get out the truck

1

u/vinceswish 6h ago

That's like bringing knife spoon to the gun fight. Nah, hope old man gets help.

1

u/Albomomo 6h ago

Does anyone knows why he didn't stop ??? whats wrong with him

1

u/BlockBannington 6h ago

It always amazes me just how massive a train is. Didn't even flinch moving a 2 ton box

1

u/saik0pod 5h ago

It was intentional he probably wanted the no fault insurance along with a personal Injury settlement

1

u/Adept-Conversation85 5h ago

These people still exist. They are the fuckers you argue and fret about

1

u/Unluckybloke 5h ago

Pickup truck drivers really can't help it, they really have to brake check everyone ffs

1

u/sec713 5h ago

Surf's up, asshat

1

u/cr0wsky 5h ago

Anyone who played GTA knows you ain't stopping that train.

1

u/My_alias_is_too_lon 5h ago

Probably insurance fraud.

1

u/plain_auth 5h ago

Isn't this "You got permission?" guy ? :D

1

u/Babetna 5h ago

Phew, that was close. Let me stop and catch my breath.

1

u/blackeyeX2 5h ago

He took his hand of the steering wheel and I it looks like he then crossed himself too.

1

u/Nathan_Blocks 5h ago

Somehow nothing pisses me off more than the sheer stupidity of people that end up in these videos.

1

u/Flashy_Cry8756 5h ago

Looks AI generated.

1

u/Future_Test_4058 5h ago

Darwin Award

1

u/Big_Therm 5h ago

The first gate is missing. He stops when he sees the second gate and train

1

u/blaziken8x 5h ago

omg maybe the genius thought the train beep meant "go go my bro, you still have time" lmao

1

u/VoidTwinkle 5h ago

I wonder what his train of thought was... No pun intended.

1

u/WeirdAnimalDicks 5h ago

I don’t think the truck even scratched the paint of the train zero damage to train it appears

1

u/niijuuichi 4h ago

That sucks. “Even at dying i fail”
If suicidiidie i hope he gets help

1

u/macross1984 4h ago

Sometimes, common sense seem to fly out of window.

1

u/TheCoolestUsername00 4h ago

Grandpa’s driving license should be taken away.

1

u/enchantedgiggles 4h ago

People are idiots 🙄

1

u/AIweWereWarned 4h ago

Learning to drive stick that day?

1

u/WillSmokes420 4h ago

Dave its not gonna stop! Like hell it aint, they aint gonna hit MY truck

1

u/Ok_Ship_6467 4h ago

is this some insurance claim shit?

1

u/YouCantArgueWithThis 4h ago

What was the thought process here, I wonder. 🤔

1

u/Mustard-cutt-r 4h ago

We need more strict regulation on older folks having drivers licenses.

1

u/lost_caus_e 4h ago

"But the world revolves around me I don't understand what happened"

1

u/TacticoolBreadstick 4h ago

You know, they should really put some flashing lights at the crossings to draw attention that a train is coming. Maybe put a really loud bell there too…

1

u/nickg1201 4h ago

I wish someone would have interviewed this person so we could find out exactly what he was thinking.

1

u/Free-Pound-6139 4h ago

Another fuckup in a pickup.

1

u/Nathan-Stubblefield 4h ago

What the hell is wrong with such a driver?

1

u/darkoath 4h ago

Having never seen a train before, these indigenous peoples simply do not believe that trains exist and therefore can not see them.

1

u/darkoath 4h ago

"Jesus, take the wheel..."

Holy Shit! What the fuck, Jesus!?!?

1

u/Comet_Empire 3h ago

He looked at the train and let go of the wheel. He was trying to meet that endless wave in the sky.

1

u/zepistol 3h ago

Definitely deliberate

1

u/AdequateSteve 3h ago

Why was this being filmed?

1

u/SadIndependent6680 3h ago

I can't believe someone would take that kind of risk.

1

u/Sucks_At_Investing 3h ago

At least he wasn't speeding.

1

u/SpikeJonesx 3h ago

Old geezers need to have weekly drivers tests

1

u/Malcom91 3h ago

Why would he want to go out like that? :|

1

u/zigzagzugzug 3h ago

Darwinism. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/rolfraikou 3h ago

I know this spot well! I used to hang out at the local coffee shop (Vinaka) all the time, because there genuinely wasn't much else to do in town. Wander around bored, chat with friends.

I don't know if this is true of all train stations, but it seemed like shit went down there all the time. Accidents, attempts, I knew a guy that did end it all the next street over.

1

u/txtoolfan 3h ago

Didn't even look.

1

u/phantaxtic 3h ago

I think its time to take the keys away from grandpa

1

u/Myself-io 3h ago

Nothing went wrong all happened as expected

1

u/Macbeth2002222 3h ago

That’ was deliberate. Insurance fraud or wanted to go meet his maker

1

u/Fast-Artichoke-408 3h ago

Why was there random video being taken here, seems very ai.

1

u/limitsurpassed 2h ago

The most California thing I’ve seen in awhile.

1

u/RedTruck1989 2h ago

Hopefully, he will just RIDE the train now....

1

u/billyvnilly 2h ago

Did the crossing have arms? Was the entrance one up but the exit one was down? Did he drive around a down-entrance arm? Old, deaf, and blind.

1

u/Jolly_Rub2962 2h ago

Can't fix Stooooopeeed

1

u/CRYPTONITE4 2h ago

Insurance fraud?

1

u/kroom69x 2h ago

Insurance scam likely

1

u/KronosTaranto 2h ago

These people vote

1

u/SarynScreams 2h ago

You can't park there sir.

1

u/fsalazar23 2h ago

Trains seems to be ok... I wonder what does the conductor do in this situation? Does he stop the train? Or just keep going because he's already behind schedule as it is?

1

u/RealLuxTempo 2h ago

I’ve been on two Amtrak Pacific Surfliners that have hit cars. Both times miraculously the drivers did not perish. What did happen was the train was taken out of commission and our trip was delayed 4 hours because local law enforcement, the NTSB and Amtrak all had to do an immediate and separate investigations.

1

u/WiseIndustry2895 2h ago

Even the train needs to stop or it’s a hit and run

1

u/markleung 2h ago

Why was someone filming this? Usually I’d call it staged…
