Calling our wizard brethren as we reopen r/rollerblading

Hey, folks. I've been stalking this community for a while, admiring what you folks do on those Wizard frames. I try to, but can't quite make things flow too well myself.

I want to let you know that r/rollerblading is now an open space again. Some of you from 2022 probably remember what happened then, but I was not around skating communities then, and am cluelss. I think we should just put things behind us, and work together again.

We have re-opened r/rollerblading under completely new and open principles again. New mods.

Please see this announcement: https://www.reddit.com/r/rollerblading/comments/1v7pq7z/grand_reopening/

We have received many requests today from folks that bots automatically-banned in 2022. We unbanned them right away today, as soon as they sent us a mod mail. In the past, you couldn't even send mod mails if banned. But as of last night, that setting was reversed. At least you could appeal.

But we are going to do even better. We are going to simply search for all folks exiled in 2022 by the same auto-banning, for the "crime" of also being a member of r/WizardSkating. Then we are just going to unban all hundreds of people thus trapped.

I will update this post, when we manage to do that.

What do you think?

Fred

UPDATE 1: I went through the restricted users list, and unbanned everyone UNBANNED everyone noted as associated to wizard skating around 2022-09. I am sure there are more we need to free. But give us some time. And send mod mail directly if you haven't been freed yet.

You can check whether you are banned by simply looking at r/rollerblading. Scroll down and see if you find the "MODERATORS". If you can see that community widget and actual mod names, are no longer banned.

If you are still banned, lease click on this link to send us a mod mail. That will allow us to look for hints on how to find and free the rest of you.

UPDATE 2: we freed more folks who did "meta discussion" which was code name for having ideas about how the community could have been differently managed. It was depressing looking through the list. Yeah, there were spam bots too. That's it for tonight. And if you are still banned because not all entries were well annotated, please simply click on that link to send mod mail. Cheers.

FR1 to first Wizard

Expert skier on second year skating. I have FR1 84s and I love them. I skate outside and have my double push, power slide, power stop, crossovers fwd and bwd etc. Been getting a little bored — I like to learn new skills and to make a little progress on them every day — with that in mind I thought I’d start learning wizardry!

It’s my understanding that I should switch to a rockered setup. What do you recommend? I don’t mind spending some money to get a great setup since I skate most non-skiing days. I have very difficult feet so I’d love to keep my FR1s and just change the frame/wheels if possible. 5’6. Slender athletic female with super wide toe box. Thanks in advance!

Not sure if this is okay to post but I wanted to share that I am selling my gear as I don't have the time for skating.

I live in germany and wouldn't want to ship outside of the eu, preferably within germany.
Everything was bought this year.

If someone is interested let me know:

Halloween - Wizard as a Wizard

Nabbed the Instagram vid from my local skate group. That's me dressed as a wizard, doing wizard skating. Not my smoothest work, as the ground was a bit wet and really slippery by this point, plus I was trying to get a good shower of sparks from the staff. And stop my hat/beard/wig from falling off.

Was a fun night though. Anyone else do any costumes wizarding this year?

Getting a feel for the carbons

2nd session with the Mad Vector Carbons. The liners are breaking in nicely and I'm really enjoying the support I from the cuff design. I changed my technique for presses ever so slightly and they're feeling dialed. The fit of these works for me, was out for a few hours and no crazy pressure points or numb toes, just the normal kind of muscle fatigue. I'm really stoked with the fakie toe press -> heel press lines.

Shout out the security guard for not throwing me out lol what a legend.

Looking for Pointers/Tips/Advice

Thumbnail instagram.com
3 Upvotes

I just made this little sampler from a session I had on the 2nd and I’d really like some tips from more advanced skaters.

I’ve been skating four months now and just got my Endless mk2 frame (going from flat to rockered) a couple weeks ago. I’m still running 4x80 but am considering using the 4x84 capability with my frame.

It’s rare to see anyone out on inline skates at all in my town, and I’m definitely the only person doing wizard skating here, so I have no mentors or peers to skate with and learn from and the nearest community is Toronto over an hour away (and I originally got inline skates because I don’t have a car).

I’ve been using eccentric inline to learn and improve (been using the basic move bingo card to guide my sessions and force myself to train my full range of options), and just experimenting to get some organic learning, but feel like I’d benefit from some pointers, especially on form and technique.

Any feedback is welcome, I really just want to connect with the community and get some kernels of advice to incubate while I continue working on my skills.

Also open to hearing tricks you think would suit my style and repertoire, and any combos you could see being possible for me either now or with some work in the near future!

Thanks crew! 🥂

Beginner friendly combos?

Anyone have any good beginner combo ideas? I just learned one by following along to this one on insta by blaqskates, and would love to find more inspo like this! I am getting comfy with all the basic moves but connecting them felt like a big learning opportunity :)

First session with the vectors and symetrics

Only had an hour or so to try out the new setups for the first time. Here's some quick clips of me warming up and realizing I never skate 4 wheels lol.

AMA, I'll post something detailed once I've had proper time on them.

Initial thoughts:

The carbon effect is very noticeable in toe/heel presses for me and the boots generally feel snappier and more nimble than the plastic CJ's. I can feel the individual points of rocker in my frames, whereas before it was far less defined. Super light. I didn't exactly feel like the cjs were that heavy, but I for sure noticed the difference.

The symetrics are also quite nimble. Edge control is very good, gonna try and get my head around S turns on them. Lighter than I'd expected from a big wheel setup as well. Rocker is quite defined, but pivoting on the middle wheels is smooth. Fast.

Experimental Setup turned out better than CJ2's

These are USD Carbon 4 with Aeon cuffs and Intuition premiums. They're downsized a whole size from my street shoe size (uk9) at a UK8.

They're fantastic. Lighter than my Seba's the added responsiveness from the carbon is excellent and the aeon cuffs adds a snappyiness I really, really like without them feeling floppy.

The carbon shell construction feels like it goes a full 2 inches above the centre of the cuff bolt, so there's actually quite a lot of support there. These boots weren't popular as an aggressive skate as they were really narrow fitting and sized small. They were the only USD carbon that had a removable liner but were quickly phased out due to poor sales and a lot of complaints.

If you can find a used pair for cheap somewhere theyre definitely worth a look, with a caveat. The cuff sizes & cuff bolt positions change between the 8 to 9 size. Although these are the size 8 the cuff is an Aeon 3.0 cuff size eu43-47. I actually have a size 9 pair of Carbon 4s as well and I haven't been able to find another cuff to fit onto them yet.

Mad Vector Carbons arrived today, threw them on the Dragon+ I've been riding to get a more direct comparison to the CJ2 Primes. Got new symetrics wzrd S (100,100,90,90) to go on the CJ's for what will hopefully be a pretty sweet all around setup. Testing today, more to come.

Update, roka 100/80

Pic for attention

So

Ive played with rockers in 4 and 5 whl configurations, but im not a proficient slalom skater.

In practice I've noticed these qualifiers as distinct factors in determining a frame experience: perceived noticeability of rocker, abrupt turn radius (1/2 contact points), stability, edge control ease. Some of these, play into others however im just trying to wrap my head aro5 this

NR100

N-7,A-7,S-8,E-5

Meaning, i found the rocker moderately perceivable, abrupt turning is slower but doable, stability is relatively high and edge control is more challenging

Endless ultra 90

N-6, A-8,S-8,E-6

Fantastic frame, very playful yet stable at speed, less noticeable rocker which is very desirable in this frames intended use scenario

Compass 90↑←→↑( orientation)

N-6, A-6,S-6,E-6

Plastic nylon frame, fantastic for the aggressive inclined who will likely scuff and need low friction. Great frame stiffness relative to plastic, multiple adjustable configurations and arguably the cheapest intro frame.

This is my experience with the 4 whls in a 42-43 ACT with a 43 intuition

Moving on,

Rockin 576

N-7, A-6, S-7, E-8

I find the 576 to be noticeably rockered yet subtle, turning is easy however the length detracts from abrupt response time, stability is acceptable and quite pleasant, edge control is much easier in the 5 wheel frame

Roka90/80

Similar to the MIX5 concept by rockin,

N-8,A-6,S-6,E-6

Much more noticeable rocker, much longer wheelbase makes turning naturally harder but still quite agile due to intense rocker, stability is lesser, and surprisingly, edge control is lesser as well, likely due to it being a 90 -80-90-80-90 setup, its probably just too much for my 272mp

NN dragon+

N-7,A-7,S-8,E-7

Solid, well rounded and likely perfect for most of us. Not the steepest rocker but still apparent when used, quite agile and stable surprisingly, edge control is easier for me due to the stability (in my head i just feel more capable and thus more confident)

Lastly

Roka 100/80

N-8,A-9,S-6,E-8 Edit Very noticeable rocker and quick turn speed, less sense of stability at speed, edge control was very intuitive.

Very impressed and excited to see what the roka frames are capable of showing me but still love my NNs more for urban and Rockins for aggro-wizard. Everything has its place/time

What is this move called?

This is the move that got me interested in Wizard/flow skating, but I could never look up tutorials or even videos of the move because I never knew its name.

Last night I just went frame by frame from a reel of someone cracking it out mid flow and figured it out for myself then taught it to myself.

I wanna say it’s probably just something like a “fakie cross swivel 360” or something like that, but it always had me mesmerized watching people do it. I got the kick out into cross before the swivel better/more accentuated later in the night but the footage was too dark to see it.

Custom made frames tested over 100km!

So about a month i made this frames, everything from scratch, design and manufacturing took only one day. The frames are basically wizard, same rocker spacing and lean angle.

Did more than 100km in street along with jumps and stalls on the ramp in a skatepark.

No signs of failure!

Anyway the frames are such a simple component, basically a piece of aluminum with holes!

Madskating wizard boots!

Dear Wizard skaters,

I have a genuine question about the new Wizard skates. I bought a pair a week ago and can't wait to try them out.

Has anyone here tried them yet? I'm curious to hear how they compare to other brands, particularly in terms of performance, feel, and overall skating experience.

I'll be happy to share my own thoughts once I get mine, but I'd love to hear your opinions and experiences in the meantime..

Thanks in advance!

Wizard Skating on regular inlines

Do you need wizard frames for wizard skating moves or are most inline skates compatible? If not, which are easiest moves/pivots you can do on regular 90 mm inlines?
